    Does anyone really do editing on a plane such that it affects a laptop buying choice, been flying for decades, rarely seen anyone pull out a laptop.

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  4 місяці тому

      Some people do. I do the odd time just to pass time if I want or if I have a project I want to get an early start on and have an idea I don’t want to forget for the edit haha

      Before covid, when I was travelling more, I used to spend all my long flights writing code. Nothing fancy, but a small laptop is indeed easy to use on planes if not too crowded.

      14 inch is way more portable, my personal logic is both 14 and 16 inches are way too small to be used for professional work long term. They're both secondary screens waiting to be plugged into a big display at the office or at home. (I use a 42 inch 4k 120hz OLED 10bit native display) so I'd rather have a more portable device than have a marginally larger screen that is STILL way too small.

    I found out recently after I was obcessing about external ssd speed that anything over 400 MB.s is not helping for the editing time line. For file swap yes but other than that any ssd will work well. Word.

    Good stuff for sure. I'm getting a similar unit for video editing only. Do you happen to know the specs or model of your external that was slowing you a bit. ??

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  4 місяці тому +1

      All I know is it a USB 3.0 8tb Seagate external hard drive. So the transfer speeds being 3.0 aren’t amazing.
      I have a video to come soon showing the differences between the Seagate external, the SanDisk SSD, and the internal drive on the MacBook.

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  4 місяці тому +1

      I would recommend an SSD if you can. The seagate is great for storing footage and costs less but the SSD is much better for editing off of. Especially if you create Proxy's with your footage.

    • @sutv6754
      @sutv6754 4 місяці тому

      @@TannerBiggan oh, thank you. I have tons of SSDs all kinds, really fast and some not so fast. But the Mac does have thunderbolt 4 so The drive used externally must be fast …My question to you was what SSD were you using that you had some choppiness? From what I’ve been reading, I don’t have to actually use proxies even on 4K 10, but, 422. I just bought a legion 9i With the very fastest chip and GPU and it’s not cutting it, so it’s going back.

      For fastest performance you should get a thunderbolt nvme enclosure and put your preferred nvme ssd inside.

    Do you have any issues with 10bit 120fps footage playback when you apply heavy grades and noise reduction

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  4 місяці тому +2

      Great question! The answer is no. I use a Sony A7IV as my main camera. I record in 4K 10bit 4:2:2 and it loads great! This is straight off of the MacBook itself though. Not off of any externals. And it’s also the only library I have open editing that. If you have multiple libraries open with heavy amounts of any 4K footage and all with heavy grades then yes the MacBook will slow down a bit as any computer would when trying to render that much footage.
      Always have to keep in mind what your work load is on the computer while editing in order to get the most efficient and fastest renderings possible 👍🏼

    I bought an M1 Mac mini when they first announced them then as soon as the M1 Max was out I picked up a 16 inch and gave away the M1 Mac Mini. I just ordered the M3 Max since I do music production and CPU cores matter more than anything for audio work. I'm excited to see how much more I can squeeze out of a M3 Max over the M1 Max but sadly I had to get silver since Space Black was on backorder 😭💻

    I'm going to get a new laptop and I don't know exactly what type to get. I was thinking of buying a MacBook since the specs it has to offer are quite fitting to what I need and will be needed in the future but I also do a little bit of gaming here and now and I'm a bit skeptical about that. Many people have said that if you want to game you should get a gaming laptop but in my experience, gaming laptops have given up on me (stopped working properly) after idk 3 years or so. And since I have a gaming PC right now (it's also old ngl) I won't need something that's made only for that. I need something that's focused on my work: documents, editing, 3D models, PPTs…etc. And have gaming in the background. Is a MacBook like yours, in this case, good to get or not?

    • @ymckrgb

      MacBooks are terrible value if you plan to do any gaming

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  19 днів тому +1

      If it’s more work focused like you stated then absolutely the MacBook Pro is the way to go! You did mention gaming and the MacBook can definitely handle games but I wouldn’t count on it running higher blockbusters type games. I’m sure it can but I don’t know to exact extent of it since I don’t use mine for gaming purposes.
      But the answer is get for your workflow and a small yes for some games.

    The touchbar was intel only; M1 was a part of the redesign. $4000+ could be spent on upgrading sound with a high-quality boom mic, consistently upgrading to the best / more lights, and color grading masterclass/mentorship. Proxy workflows are the industry standard. If you could use the same techniques that films use in your short UA-cam videos, the quality of your clientele would go up. If an investment does not give a 5x to 10x ROI positive, it's not worth it, and this is not always financially related either. M3 looks beyond impressive, but considering an M1 Max spec’ed out with a prores raw proxy workflow would be cost-effective and give me 12-bit color in the post and a machine made to manage said codec.

    • @TannerBiggan
      @TannerBiggan  3 місяці тому

      The touch bar was on the very first M1 chip they made. Before the M1 Pro and max chips.
      Yes proxy workflows help and ton!
      I wouldn’t tell anyone to upgrade who can’t afford it or even has an M1 Pro or Max.
      All based on needs for what you’re doing 👍🏼

    Get a Thunderbolt or USB4 external enclosures (40GBs) with a fast NVME like Samsung 980 pro. Read and Write speeds are 3000 MBs. I got Acasis, Jeyi, Orico brands.
    Internal SSDs are around 6000 cuz it's not limited by the max speed of Thunderbolt/USB4.
    The External drives you got looks like standard HDDs at around 100MBs. That sandisk is USB 3.2 (10GBs) 1000 MBs.
    Note that Macs don't support USB3.2 Gen2x2 (20GBs) Don't buy those.
