In Flames hurts the most for me, Jotun was the song that got me into metal. I hung in until 'Soundtrack to Your Escape' (barely), but from then on it was a completely different band. Every release after that I prayed and hoped they would come back to some of their original sound, but it's just disappointment after disappointment.

Necrotic Nick- Strangely enough I started with Reroute to Remain when that dropped and worked my way backwards and found the stuff I really latched on to. Once the sound really started shifting on A Sense of Purpose I was getting more hesitant about buying new albums from them. Siren Charms pretty much just shit in my heart though.

@@thrallsofmetal That's a fair assessment. For me the Lunar Strain through Clayman era is great. The Reroute to Remain through Come Clarity era is good. A Sense of Purpose through Siren Charms I wasn't really enjoying but was still trying to force myself to like them. Battles and I, the Mask are just so awful that I've completely given up.

I can stand some of the later in flames catalogue(up to sounds of a playground at the absolute latest) but pretty much solely because I enjoy the guitar parts on songs like drenched in fear and tilt. They sound like a weird hybrid of metalcore, melodeath and alt rock in their 2006 plus stuff. I actually noticed how much Anders friden sounds like Olly Sykes(bring me the horizon) when he sings certain parts (like in the bridge of all for me on sounds of a playground) Def not the melodic death giants they once were

Pretty much anything from 5fdp. I can’t really say that they aren’t talented because they can play, it’s just that they don’t really do anything interesting or exciting with their songwriting or musical ideas (to me).
One of the reasons I love Slipknot is because I can see them branch out into other styles and keep it relatively interesting. I am a big fan of vol. 3 and their last album WANYK because they had the confidence to write different sounding songs like “spiders” or “my pain” and still have heavier sounding material like “orphan” and “solway firth” and “not long for this world”. Even though they might not always hit the nail on the head or execute it perfectly, they still have an interest in not trying to remain stagnant and repetitive. And for that I can at least respect their efforts
But bands like 5fdp and disturbed and six feet under just stay in their lane and all of their stuff is really interchangeable and not very distinct. I just don’t really get anything out of it personally. No hate to anyone who does.
(Also thank you guys for introducing me to Temple of Void, been jamming that recently)

I'll never forget the time I bought Celtic Frost's Into the Pandemonium.
I remember discovering Celtic Frost through Morbid Tales 2 weeks prior and just falling in love with that style of Celtic Frost, in the next few days I bought To Mega Therion and I genuinely thought the band could do no wrong...
And then I bought the Pandemonium record and my smile just faded away. I don't remember the last time an album offended and disappointed me in such a way.

I wholeheartedly disagree with your choice of Diabolus. Maybe it's because I discovered slayer before I learned to be very discerning and had just come off of my nu metal phase but i thought it was good. Definitely not their best but I dont get the comments about the lack of urgency and energy (Scrum?, Point?) It even opens up with Bitter Peace which is a ripping thrasher if I've ever heard one. I've always looked at this record as Slayer showing the world what nu metal could sound like if it were actually good. Spot on with all the others though.

Necrotic Nick- Strangely enough, I was in my nu metal phase when I got Diabolus but that wasn't what I wanted from Slayer. I wanted that hyper aggressive fast sound again because that was kinda my escape from a lot of the more groove centric metal that was out then. Bitter Peace is a banger and Scrum and Point are decent but the rest of it is a really lackluster listen. It just felt like all the energy had left the band for the most part and they'd been bucking trends for years but here they were settling in one. Yeah, it's still not for me.

    • @carlosjantarada7212

I agree. More than Nu Metal I think many of the tracks there are hard core inspired (lots of Biohazard influences especially on Stain Of Mind, Love To Hate, Wicked and Screaming From The Sky). On the other hand there's a couple of Nu Metal drum lines here and there (Death's Head is a blatant example although I kinda like the song) and others that mix some of the whispered intros with some elements of Divine Intervention (namely Desire and Overt Enemy). Other than that the remainder is pretty much in Divine's vein with In The Name Of God, Point and Scrum being cool enough songs as far as I'm concerned. Then there's Bitter Peace and man... this song wrecks everything in it's path. After the intro this is pristine top notch Seasons In The Abyss like Slayer and has a place in my band's top ten songs. So do I think Diabolus is a great album?... well not quite. IMO it lacks some consistency and there are too many songs I regard as fillers rendering it a bit uneven. On the other hand it features some great moments here and there, the Hard Core influence does not shock me and to be fair Slayer was the band that changed the least during the 90's from the so called big 4. IMO God Hates Us All (with the exception of Disciple, New Faith and Payback - all good songs) sounds way more Nu Metal to me (plus I really dislike its guitar sound) and apart from the songs I mentioned is absolutely dull. Not to mention Repentless that IMO is a void of ideas and a drag to listen for more than a couple of songs. But even those two albums aren't garbage per se. Only drop dead boring.

But I didn't know that a punk/goth/emo band is on a metal label. Awesome. Just like how Parkway Drive, a metal band is on Epitaph, a punk label. Awesome both ways. Anyway, Creeper is awesome! Both of their records are excellent! I can't wait to see what they do next. Just wanted to say that because you mentioned that Nickelback was on Roadrunner, which I had no idea about until now. November 5th is gonna be a whopper when it comes to releases. Not only do we have Mol and Bullet for My Valentine dropping new albums, but Psycho Synner [formerly known as Psychosexual and fronted by ex-FFDP drummer Jeremy Spencer] are gonna release NINE albums that day. One of those albums is the earlier-mentioned Unholy Hymns for the Children. The nine albums are named as follows:
    1. 666 B.C.-Volume 1: The Burning Years
    2. 666 A.D.-Volume 2: The Scorched Years
    3. Bite the Snake
    4. As the Demon Dances Under the Blood Red Sky
    5. Dying to See You
    6. Fuck in the Fire
    7. Killing You Softly

Not to be an elitist but, really? Psycho Sinner? I didn’t know that band had actual fans. Who the hell releases 9 albums on the same day? As for BFMV, they are as generic as metalcore comes. The only interesting thing they’ve done is Scream Aim Fire which was an admirable attempt at combining metalcore with thrash, but it had already been done way better by Trivium on their Crusade album. And that barely had any metalcore elements.

But the earlier albums are what set the bar for me because since they're the pioneers of Melodic Death Metal and holy shit their material all the way up to Clayman as well as Reroute to Remain were absolute bangers. It kind of makes me upset they might never go back to their old roots but who knows what'll happen right? lol anyways I love their old stuff all the way up to Come Clarity.

Regarding In Flames, I started with Whoracle in approx 1998 and saw them live twice on the Clayman tour in 2000 (once with a very young Shadows Fall touring off of their first album). First album is decent but kinda "bleh". Jester Race through Clayman are godly. I can spin any of those albums at any time and the nostalgia comes in like a flood. Whoracle is probably still my favorite album of theirs. Reroute is where things started to go downhill and the mainstream influence started to creep in. Some good songs on there but... nowhere near Clayman or before. Soundtrack to Your Escape? Horrible. There may be one song on the whole album that I can stomach. Garbage production also.
Come Clarity. Mostly forgettable but certainly better than Soundtrack imo. Take this Life, the title track, Scream and Crawl Through Knives are better than anything on Soundtrack imo. Here's where it gets interesting. Just when I thought In Flames was down and out they come out with A Sense of Purpose. Most people have totally written IF off by this point and I don't blame them for it, but for me, they are too nostalgic of a band and are the reason that I got into melodic Swedish style metal. If you haven't heard A Sense of Purpose and given it a shot you may want to revisit this album. The Mirrors Truth, Disconnected, I'm the Highway, Sober and Irrelevant, Condemned, March to the Shore and Abnegation are all top notch songs. Imo, if A Sense of Purpose would have been released after Clayman, it would have gotten a better reception than Reroute did simply because it's a better album than Reroute was. It's just that people had given up on them and lumped the album in with all the other stinkers.
The rest of In Flames' discography is ass water. Terrible, up til the last album they released which I though had a few good tracks on it but nothing special. TL;DR, Revisit A Sense of Purpose, especially the songs I listed above from it. It's a really solid album imo. I thought they were on some sort of comeback when they released it but then they came out with another steaming pile of garbage afterwards, I don't even remember what it was called. Either way... have a good one. Cheers. I've rambled on enough.

I agree with many albums, like morbid angel or machine head. But I really like "hating life" from Grave and Siren Charms was also a great album of In Flames. Sure it was a complete rupture, but in my opinion In Flames is one band that made so many changes and still remained awesome as hell! But sure I get why many people dislike siren charms, when I listened to it for the first time, I also felt like "wtf? This is kinda weird" but it grew on me by time. I also like "diabolus in musica" by Slayer, sure not one of their best albums, but not as bad as "undisputed attitude"

Necrotic Nick- While I appreciate both In Flames and Grave's earlier works (actually a pretty fair amount of Grave recent stuff too) both of those really missed for me. Hating Life sounded like a completely different band and just turned their sound into kinda faceless groove metal and In Flames essentially was a different band at that point. After Jesper left the fold the quality of the releases from In Flames really dropped for me and as many times as I've tried to give Siren Charms a chance it's still not my thing. With Slayer, at least Undisputed Attitude was just a cover album minus the abysmal Gemini, but Diabolus was all their writing. As a punk fan I can at least appreciate those covers for what they are.

Great video watch. Here's a controversial opinion I have,I actually liked Slayer's Diablolus In Musica. Mainly because I have a good variety of Metal genres I currently listen to and Nu Metal is one of them. I personally think Slayer trying something different kind of worked, but am I saying I thought it was a perfect album, absolutely not. There are three songs on there I can't stand, Overt Enemy,Desire, and Wicked, three of Slayer's worst songs ever created. But overall I kind of enjoyed it,I can totally get why most people hate it,I mean it's Death Metal Icons trying a different genre,so I knew it wouldn't be well received at all. My favorite songs on the Album are the more Thrasy sounding songs, like the second track. Again, great video!

On January 11th 2019 (a day that shall live in infamy) I ordered the CD from Amazon to complete the discography, downloaded the digital copy, and proceeded to listen to it all in one sitting. Now, I have amassed a fairly substantial music library over the last few decades and have purchased more than my fair share of bowl swirlers in that time but I swear to all that is unholy, not one of them made me as angry to listen to as St. Trashcanlid. I still have PTSD from the snare that Lars pounds relentlessly, the horrible vocals that an overly verbose Hetfield unleashes without tonal regard, song structures that were so repetitious I ran out of hair on my head to pull out and started working on my face, and the production........Christ almighty. Granted I haven't listened to many albums on this list but some I have and not one of them, not one, has ever made me both angry and fatigued to anywhere near that degree. I was hopeful that it wasn't as bad as people said but I was wrong, so very very wrong.
