- Yugioh loves to give monsters another chance to shine. They call these “retrains” since the monster is essentially being “retrained” to be better for battle (and it was in the original name of Celtic Guardian’s retrain). While we love to see any and all monsters get a retrains, we also like to overanalyze the ones that didn’t make sense at first glance. They may make sense when you break them down, but they could cause you to ask “why?” when you meet them. We’ll be breaking down some of the weirdest aspects of Yugioh monster retrains. I’ll be joined by Judgment Meter, Corgian, Sam from Dungeon Dive Bar, Professor Oats, and SyzygySolo.

One funny thing about Tardy Orc lore is that the set before GAOV was called Order of Chaos or ORCS for short, despite that name there wasnt a single Orc card in it, so one set later we got the Tardy Orc as the "punchline" to that Konami meta joke
I swear for all the shit Konami gets you gotta love that they constantly make meta jokes and puns sometimes at their own expense. So many card games take themselves way too serious so its a nice change if pace

Goddess of Sweet Revenge is one of those cards that are perfect for making anime moments in real life, though it is very inconsistent

@SavitTheGoalie You also have to control no cards. Which includes both monsters and spells and traps (haha, like anyone uses traps), which means that it's not very practical for any kind of comboing.
Fun fact: gun experts have actually tested it, and you CAN disable the hammer of a gun with a yugioh card.

Happens at about the 2 minute mark.
I feel that Fortune Lady Every was made because Dark Signer Carly was coming to Duel Links at the time, and that they also printed the Fortune Fairies because they were also bringing in regular Carly into Duel LInks as well.
Every's a cool card though, and having a non-targeting banish effect is pretty nice
Dude Goddess of sweet revenge looks like a card someone would put on his salad of a deck just to use it in the last minute to win the game

It's what the 10 y/o at locals topdecks in your 3rd duel, you only play because you gave him a pity victory in the first duel...
Someone in the Yu-Gi-Oh! creative department has a weird fascination with Gyakutenno Megami and made Daigyakutenno Megami an extremely awkward signature card of Yuo Goha in Yu-Gi-Oh SEVENS that he literally just tosses onto the field so it can get blown up and then immediately switch to his Fusion cards.
The card is so random in Yuo's deck standing with his creepy circus-themed monsters that it looks visibly confused every time he summons it.
the weirdest part was that it is featured in the 2° opening almost to the point of making her look like Yuou's ace monster.... even though it isn't even needed for his fusion summons. and as far as we know, is only in his deck because, he considers her his favorite card
The biggest thing that bugs me with the Mystical Elf retrain is that: You can't give Attack Points! The cancel effect is okay and the summon effect during the battle phase is good with a large beat stick Normal Monster but why not allow her to transfer or buff the monster that she summons?!
The worse thing about her is her rebirth in Rush Duels. You have her normal self which is now classified as Legend, so you can only have 1 copy of this card and then there's her weird Japanese disco self which is reclassed as Aqua-type and has 0 defense. What was they thinking man?
@@petertilton7004 The disco ones are Aqua-types because they're a big reference to the "Bubble Era" of the Japanese economy in the 80's (The character who plays them is older than she looks, so her deck is themed around a sort of "Lost glory days of youth" for the first go-around), with the 0 defense being a joke about the eventual collapse of that bubble, and the partying lifestyles of people at the time, particularly the life and troubles of a Japanese office lady at the time
Notably, these themes are kept even when she switches to Dark instead of Light (Commentary on crime/prison conditions at the time), and when she switches to Fire/Water (Focused on the types of cooking that were popular at the time, particularly new foods from abroad especially), all focused on 0 defense Aqua versions of older cards in general to keep up the "Bursting of the Bubble Era" theming
Fun Fact: Seiyaryu is one of the first cards you could get as Promo Cards in the TCG from a video game being in Dark Duel Stoires' second set.

I think that in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, against powerful dragons, monsters, fiends, etc there’s just this dude named Don Zaloog who’s trying to throw down lmao
And he's tougher than a whole bunch of them (even some that got banned)
Actuallly, the Mystical Elf retrain pulls of the old, pre-Advanced Yugioh games like 'Reshef of Destruction' where Attributes and Types played a role in battle rather then just stats and effects, and some vanilla monsters had effects. Mystical Elf's effect was exactly as it was in the anime, once a turn you could activate it to give BEWD a power boost, although.
Ah yes, the niche effect it had in DDS to buff Blue-Eyes

It was Solomon Muto's deck originally that was handed to Yugi. That, and even the statement at the end of that duel.
Also, Duelist Kingdom in on Netflix.
Seiyaryu was also in the old McD's happy meals that had a couple sets of Yugioh cards in it. As well as Gyakutenno Magami.
I didn't know Seiyaryu was in the McDonald's promotion sets. I had the secret rare one from DDS.

I loved being a part of this one! All of our side conversations were wonderful. I couldn't even recognize my voice for a second during the Olive Garden bit. Also, I'm glad everyone now knows about my love of pasta and Olive Garden.

I would actually make it with Past and Water, but the fact you could still go with Raiden and Lumina if ya wanted was super.

2400 isn't that specific, 90% of single tribute monsters at that time had 2400, those and the ones released afterward ended up being some very popular monsters: jinzo, nepthys, and all of the monarchs

The attribute link monsters are probs my favorite cause I love when Konami takes old monsters and does something with them and they actually are kinda useful
They should remake Bandit Keith's machine deck to have the anime/manga effect
And as a funny they should make pendulum machine into an actual pendulum monster

For what its worth, that's really good artwork for Giltia the D. Knight.
Also, if for whatever reason I need a searcher for Jinzo (assuming Jinzo is even good that format), it works well for what it is and doesn't waste a normal summon that can be spent on summoning Jinzo. The only question though is "when was the last time we've ever had a trap-heavy meta?" Hell, Jinzo even gets shut down if Skill Drain is already active on board.
Gyakutenno Megami actually had a retrain specific to the Duelist of the Roses PS2 game, it was called Empress Judge and i believe had 2200 ATK.
Seiyaryu was also unlockable in that game through entering a code, so i am very familiar with it.
Empress Judge is actually a real card, but its less a retrain and more just Super Early YGO where its a color swap, there's a couple cards like that that're just color swap counterparts

The weirdest thing about Magic not being to defeat machines in duelist kingdom is that in the tag duel against the paradox brothers yugi defeated labyrinth tank with dark magician, a very funny retrain is signal warrior, its yusei,s d-wheel transformed into a warrior combined with the field spell speed world 2

I might can explain the Mystical Elf retrain synergizing with Blue Eyes. In the Gameboy Color game, Forbidden Memories (I think that's what it's called), Mystical Elf has a special effect that boosts the attack of Blue Eyes by 500. I feel like they originally intended for Mystical Elf to be a Kaiba card or maybe it was meant to be foreshadowing for Keisara, but I think it's more to do with the GBC game.
Edit: now that I think about it, the game may have been called Dark Duel Stories instead.

What it always makes me think of is the effect they gave to Mystical Elf in DotR. To summarize: when she flips face-up, all light monsters you control gain 800 attack and defense, with this being a reference to when Yugi used her to power up Blue Eyes White Dragon in the anime, since Blue Eyes is a light monster and got attack equal to the attack points of Mystical Elf
With regards to the orb thing at around 3:25: It's not just Konami, there are other anime/manga aimed at a similar-ish target audience that are also obsessed with orbs, e.g. Dragon Ball.
You guys know what make no sense in the anime is when joey duels against the exodia hunter he knows he has to tribute summon but when he duels against roba the next episode he like doesn't know that he has to tribute summon giltia the knight
If I remember the dialogue when Joey was facing the exodia hunter correctly. It sounded like he knew tributes summoning was a thing but he didn't know what the actually rules for tribute summoning were.

Giltia is probably among my favorites of Jounouchi's (Joey's) warriors, and one of the few that carried over from his Duelist Kingdom deck to Battle City deck in the original manga. And he actually used it multiple times or attempted to use it multiple times throughout the manga unfortunately the times he tries to use he often messes up like in the duel with Ryota/Mako when he summons it but realizes he forgot to remove the parasite paracide monster that Haga/Weevil had put in his deck when summoned itself when drawn and turned Giltia in an insect before it was destroyed by Torrential Tribute.
And some people may wonder why the Giltia retrain doesn't include things like insect Queen or Fortress Whale but although Jonouchi/Joey also won "Insect Queen" and "Fortress Whale" in Ante Duels he never used either of them in the manga.
It's just frustrating that Giltia can't search Gearfried given the existence of Gilti-Gearfried. Would have made fusion summoning that with it's intended monsters so much easier.
1:30 - Wait, "The Gross Ghost of Fled Dreams" already has a Retrain, it's the "Dark Spirit of Banishment".

Swordsman of Landstar's retrain was my favorite. I'd use it with Freed to get Colossal in my Synchro Warrior beater.
I am surprised you only mentioned Rush duels once considering a shit ton of the monsters in there are goofy retrains.

The only reason i know Gyakutenno Megami is due to the PS1 Yugioh game Forbidden Memories. That freaking High Meadow Magician kicked my ass a lot of times with that card due to the BS permanent field spell... Or Was it Empress Judge? I dont know, they are too similar.

21:56 Bladefly was in the Harpy Lady starter and three Milus Radiants helped the Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes defeat Tzeentch with his ace monster, Wind-Up Kitten. All four of which he summoned on the same turn by using Rescue cat, then using monster reborn on Rescue Cat. Also he used Big March of Animals and Morphing Jar was the victim of the Kitten's Wind-Up effect so it wouldn't be fliptivated.
I wanted to mention that Solitaire and Everys "tail" was actually the blade of her staff that every Fortune Fairy and Lady has but I see you've gotten enough of those 😅😆

Out of all the Attribute booster monsters, as far as I know, only Missus Radiants OG form has seen competitive play.
In Reaper Format, it is used as part of Rescue Cat beatdown decks.
8:12 I mean the card art storyline that Tardy Orc's art is a part of is one big meta joke. They even added onto it when Sangan got unbanned (with Mistake (which also explains why Tardy Orc was late to Tour Bus to the Underworld, he was at the wrong stop while Sangan got on the wrong bus), Shared Ride, Mistaken Arrest and Mistaken Accusation) as Sangan getting banned was part of the story (Tour Bus To Forbidden Realms).

Hey, this is kinda unrelated and I recently found your channel so I wanted to ask. Would you consider making a list about the most interesting "locations" in yugi-oh cards? There are many places that are referenced in the backstories of multiple cards due to the events that happen in them and things like that, so I think that may be a fun video.
Also, I don´t know if the alien archetype has some kind of backstory (but I think they do) it would be cool to see it in one video if it does have one.

So with Tardy Orce the reason he was made is because In Order of Chaos abbreviated as ORCs had no Orc monsters in it so the next set got Tardy Orc as a joke card.

"Dark Blade" Is actually the alternate form of "Dragon Manipulator" Who was as his name states a manipulator of dragons, but in the end he became an underated and totally forgotten ally to the very famous and overrated "Warrior Dai Grepher"
Last I heard "Warrior Dai Grepher" sacrifices himself just to beat "Despair From The Dark" that's depicted on the card "Expendable Dai" which was all in vain because "Despair From The Dark" being a zombie respawns right back for "Freed The Brave Wanderer" & "Marauding Captain" to finally kill.
The best part of Milus Radiant is that he was part of a big scene in, of all things, a Warhammer 40k parody. The strategy in question had Captian General Kitten summoning Wind-up Kitten and 3 Milus Radiants to take out all of the LP of the God of Schemes, Change, changing schemes, generally being indecisive

Why did Joey use Swordsman of Landstar so much? In Yugioh abridged, they even made a joke about it.
Starry Knight Rayel need an errata in the TCG to specify its effect works on Seiyaryu. Most of the rest of the support has effects that can also substitute a level 7 light dragon and one that can just substitute light monsters in general.
Fun fact: it's possible for a single Yu-Gi-Oh card to stop a gun's hammer from hitting the bullet in the chamber.
