Bruce is very modest about his guitar playing. He truly belongs on any of those "Greatest Guitarists of All Time" lists.

I think he knows, like many who hang around with a lot of guitarists, is that those lists are largely meant to sell magazines and make people talk.

My favorite era for Bruce Cockburn was his first four albums, which were more in the fingerstyle form, but without making any fuss about technique. The music appealed to me emotionally and intellectually, the lyrics were thoughtful, sometimes mystical, and as a young man I felt that the music spoke to me and for me. So of course I began to work out various pieces for myself.
That was when I began to see that, try as I might, I was never going to be able to play at his level. He makes it look easy. It's not, but he plays with such ease that it seems to take flight.
So I learned a lot from him over half a century, how to be at ease when playing. Pick a level seems to take flight in your hands, and build on that.
Or, as the Zen aphorism has it:
In order to become a perfect painter
    First become perfect
    Then paint naturally
