Wow, for such a young man, you really know your Elvis trivia! It's refreshing to see, because having seen over 100 of his shows, having spent time with him at his after-the-late-show parties in Las Vegas, and having received 6 scarves, a teddy bear and many kisses from him, I'm always thinking nowadays that young people don't really know the immensity of his appeal, talent and charisma, or the depth of that honey-sweet voice. I’m back on my Elvis kick. Have his music floating around my head the past few weeks. Probably because the anniversary of his death just passed. I’m 67 and I of course grew up listening to him and watching his movies. I was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert here in Pittsburgh, New Years Eve, 1976. I almost didn’t get tickets but I remember my mother telling me that I better go because I may never get that chance again. As it unfortunately turned out she was correct because Elvis passed away in August of 1977.. Thanks, Fil, for sticking up for this very blessed man and his one of a kind, God given talents..
What can I say? Cool analysis!! Love your insights and knowledge on Elvis! I hope there is more people who don’t think he can play so you can do Tiger Man and Trying To Get To You from 68 as well! Great job!
I'm a huge rock/documentary fan and watched/read a lifetime of information on Elvis to concur 100% that he could play the guitar. His teacher was probably a fuddy duddy and couldn't comprehend the immense talent she/he saw. ^m^😎^m^❤
I have always wondered about that teacher. I think context is everything in comprehending something like this. And you have to consider that this was the deep south and the lines were strictly drawn, even in music. She was doubtless hearing blues phrasings in his singing because he heard so much front porch blues in Tupelo. And that was *not* appreciated at the time. He was still a child and couldn't have known what set her off.
He never had any proper training. He just picked up some chords from neighborhood blues singers in tupelo when his family lived in a black neighborhood. He was just born with a good ear and natural sense of rhythm.
@@beatnix99 Well, that's basically the blues. One didn't go to a local musical instruments store and take proper lessons. Such places did not exist in northeast Mississippi at mid-century. But every summer, even in 2019, you can attend the Hill Country Blues festival in Holly Springs. If you want to know what it sounded like, there it is.

Hi Fantastic Fil!!! Its my city 270th birthday celebration 🎂🍾 concert 🎵and fireworks!!! I am listening and watching you while listening to the concert before the fireworks. Thanks for showcasing Elvis. I love Elvis. He was so talented and was very handsome and humble. Sadly I am to too young to ever have seen him in person. Thanks for sharing
Hi Cherry! Congratuations and have a great time tonight. I was waiting for your name to pop up again because I wasn't sure if anyone answered you when, during the live stream last Tuesday, you asked how to donate...at the very bottom of the column where the comments are occurring, there's a little dollar sign ($), just click on that and follow the prompts! l was not too young for Elvis and actually got to meet him when I was a child. My neighbor worked at Paramount where he was filming "King Creole". In an effort to cheer up my brother and me after our mom died that summer, she took us to meet The King. He was incredibly kind to us, even having lunch with us in the commissary and recommending the macaroni and cheese!
@ Thank you, Cherry! The 1812 Overture really gets to me, too, but this 4th of July, hearing Dvorak's "New World Symphony" ( the main melody is based on the old folk tune, 'Goin' Home') made me weep. I'm lucky to have such a great brother, we do laugh a lot about when we were little!
I think this show was my favorite of all his performances. I never tire of his music and performances. I enjoyed your analysis and in this one, your reaction. Elvis could really entertain, yes?
Thank you so much! I very much appreciate your reviews, especially this issue of Elvis´ability at playing the guitar. It must be really difficult for some people to accept that Elvis could be such a gorgeous looking guy have such a wonderful voice, play the piano and the guitar which was his first instrument after all, as you said!
Oh come on!! The people that think he didn’t play probably believe the earth is flat. He was the king!!! Besides the Colonel wouldn’t let that happen😹🤘🏻
James Gordon aka Crazy Legs great song! Just checked it out and saved it on Spotify. It’s got kind of a Phishy thing going on. That’s another group I dig on..Phish just play here at Fenway last weekend....missed it☹️but I’ve seen them a few times..... weird thing; your first comment came up on my notifications, but not on UA-cam🤔 in reference to that; I love Elvis but I think his stint in the Army was more P.R. than him being all he can be😂
He's also been subjected to a lot of unfair analysis & propaganda that goes quite deep in terms of folklore. Found this interesting book. This author is an Elvis Fan & sheds some light on the issue : www.justicepaynepublishing.com/ www.goodreads.com/book/show/36442056-thirty-pieces-of-silver twitter.com/justicepaynepub
The King, he was the ultimate entertainer. I smiled and laughed while watching him there and you just can't help that. No one can else seems to be able to immulate that feeling you got like Elvis did. He obviously knew enough guitar and piano to write and perform like he did. The King.
I still think it's one of the best live performances ever recorded (if not the best, that's just an opinion anyway). The whole 68 comeback is such a fun show. I especially love the sit-down parts, here Elvis oozes charisma and genuineness. He's putting on a show but at the same you can really see he's having so much fun.
Hey, i love anything Elvis, he was King! A great Artist, in his own right! I loved all his songs, his movies, his guitar playing, his swivel hips, and his ravishing "GREAT LOOKS" His daughter Lisa Marie, looks just like him, and his grandson, Lisa's daughter's son, is a dead ringer for Elvis! I Dug your 2nd great analysis of Elvis, and proving, that he could and did play guitar...... P. S., back in the 70's i had a good friend that i worked with, named Dora, who had tickets to the last 2 concerts he gave b4 he died on August 17th, 1977, he brought her up on stage, all she did was cry as he sang to her, she was so overwhelmed, Elvis was the end all and be all for her , she never missed a concert, also gave her a scarf, he wrapped it around her neck, her husband took movies, she had a few of us gals over for dinner after work to view them, the movies were memorable for her, i'm sure she still has them, she now lives in Rock Ford, Illinois, way up north, if she and the family, are still there? You couldn't mention Elvis's name without her screaming for joy, she was funny as hell! The End.... I miss those days....
Carl Perkins was a GREAT guitar player. If Carl gave Elvis a seal of approval there is no doubt Elvis could play, end of argument. Also, I promise you Elvis knew more than 3 chords. Elvis making this statement on stage late in his life about only knowing 3 chords was only southern charm false humility.
Elvis was such a massive game changer in music history, that it breaks my heart when I hear the younger generation say "Elvis who?" You're doing more than maybe even you can appreciate by keeping his name alive and relevant to those who would otherwise have no other way of hearing of him. Thank you so much.
I really thought Elvis couldn't play then I caught on but you show us exactly how talented at guitar he truly was. This is the second Elvis vid I've seen. I think? U cud do a series on Elvis and I wud be excited every new example. Oh. I commented too soon.
It's worth a search to find the performance where he makes up some funny lyrics to "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and then gets the giggles and can't stop.
He didn't need to play the guitar. His fans, especially the women, just want to see him and hear him sing. He sounded pretty good on the guitar. Great reaction.
Awesome analysis! You picked a great performance. Guitar-wise, though, "Love Me" has some very interesting playing. And yes, on "Love Me," he barred a chord because, well, he needed that sound. He did it around twice in the performance, one time almost whispering to himself "aw, play it, son." It's the only time where he needs to look at the guitar a bit. But it made such a low down bluesy sound that someone says "get dirty, baby." Just adding that in. Those sit-down shows are magnificent. As you can see, he has no guitar strap and so can't stand up. Producer/director Steve Binder could have found him a strap, but he didn't. He wouldn't. He wanted to make sure he kept playing rather than getting up and undulating his body, you might say.
Elvis was a musician, he started his career with nothing but a guitar and a voice. He could play guitar piano and bass, as a matter of fact he's playing the bass line in "Baby I Don't Care" in jailhouse rock... Bill Black was having trouble transitioning to Fender Bass and Elvis apparently ended up laying down the track in the film. Anyone that doubts Elvis needs to do some homework. The man always gave what he had on stage and as bad as he got in the 70s never even lip synced...
Just saw your part 2 of Elvis playing the guitar. Fantastic n in depth video analysis ! Also was very interesting towards the end of your video: your observations of his singing, showmanship n blues influence. Kudos to you ! Looking forward to your next video.
Interesting story about Elvis' eighth grade teacher. Can't let people tell you what you're good at...you have to follow your heart and your instincts. When Fred Smith was in college, a professor told him his idea to use jets to guarantee overnight delivery of envelopes would never work. Fred wasn't deterred, and created Fed Ex in spite of him. We all can't be Elvis or Fred Smith, but we can all strive to be our best doing what we believe in!
Great video. 😊👍 I learn to play guitar watching this comeback 68 sit down show on VHS over and over again 25 years ago..... I can only play Elvis songs today😆. Thanks Fil for this video.
I recall Scotty saying in an interview that the first time they played with Elvis...they were amazed by his natural sense of rhythm, his pitch and the fact that even if he didn't know the chords to all the tunes they ran thru that day...he knew the songs and nailed the vocal parts with his own patented "Elvis Tone"!
Elvis was an enigma!!! He knew who he was and what he was capable of at an early age. Can you imagine Fil, since you're a music teacher, telling a student what Elvis's teacher told him?!?! Telling Elvis he can't sing is like telling Jesus he can't walk on water!!! ( no blasphemy intended mind you) By the way Fil, maybe you should consider an Elvis cover....😎😁✌❤🤘
Had can anyone who's seen Elvis 68 comeback special not be convinced that he played guitar. He played guitar and piano from childhood. He wasn't a virtuoso on either instrument, but he was certainly a good musician and could play both instruments well. He also played Bass. When the Beatles met him he was sitting on a sofa playing a Fender Bass, and he played bass on one of his recordings also, so enough said. IMO from 1955 - 1958 this Dude was The Baddest, Coolest Cat On The Planet. He had the most distinctive voice in the history of Rock and Roll. There's only one Elvis. I stop short of calling him the King of Rock and Roll simply because he didn't Write any Rock and Roll, but he certainly brought it into the mainstream. I realize he has a songwriting credit on His Latest Flame and Love Me Tender, but he was not a songwriter. He was a Singer and Performer. And man, what a singer and performer he was.
Thank you so much for standing up for Elvis, he is my distant cousin and I learned how to play this song from watching Elvis and you explaing how Elvis is using 1 finger, I couldn't get it until I saw your last video, if it wasn't real I could not have learned it, keep up the good work
Elvis Presley was one of my favorite singers, and I think he had an incredible voice. I thought he was a great guitarist and actor as well, and a great hip swinger too, lol. As always, you did an excellent analysis!

I might have recommended this one before I'm not sure. I just recommended this comeback special the other day to a friend for sure. It was to show the sheer fun the man was having. The king, enough said. Thanks professor for this one, I'm sure you made a few people's night, at least a few women anyhow. PS Tesla
It is a true joy to see you smiling, appreciating what you're seeing & listening to. And it's obvious how much research you do before seeing a video. Love what you do.
A friend seen him live! He wasnt a big fan in till he watched him live ! He said when he walked on stage he can fill his presents Was Unreal hes said that show change his hole out look ! HIS voice was legendry
I was five years old, strumming on a tennis racquet; jumping on the furniture; listening to Jail House Rock, when my mother came downstairs, with tears streaming down her face, and told me that Elvis had just died. I remember it like it was yesterday (probably because I hadn't seen my mother cry before, but it was all burned into my memory none-the-less).
I remember where I was that day as well. I was 13, at the mall shopping for school clothes. While in the dressing room, I heard over the radio that Elvis had died. I came out of the dressing room crying, my mother thought it was because I didn't like the clothes. Loved Elvis.
@@hopeandjazz9535 I was 11 and my mom woke me up and she told me with tears in her eyes. I felt as if I had lost a brother. My mom and I were crying together. I was mourning for a long time.
I know I'm a few years late on this one to comment on, but those doubters who thought Elvis couldn't play guitar probably got that from his movies where in most of them were to be a bit honest a bit Corney and he mimed to a lot of his music along with his guitar playing. But a great entertainer he was, my favourite was when he sung An American Trilogy in the Hawaii special.. what a great performance that was. Also if you can, have a listen to him sing Simon and Garfunkle's version of Bridge over troubled waters..incredible
Elvis was a good guitar player and quite a comedian. I didn't know that he hung around the black people. It shows that a musician's surroundings can be a positive influence on the style they play or sing. Another great review Fil

Awesome episode! Love your deep analysis! He was so cool without trying! One of a kind voice!
Elvis would capture the whole town not jus the room or building he walked into. The dude has his own planet and solar system somewhere there is no doubt about it. He was the King !
Oh, Elvis could most definitely play the guitar. And he knew how to work the dynamics with his playing, as featured here.
What can I say? Cool analysis!! Love your insights and knowledge on Elvis! I hope there is more people who don’t think he can play so you can do Tiger Man and Trying To Get To You from 68 as well! Great job!
And I love your smile you have a beautiful smile!
I'm a huge rock/documentary fan and watched/read a lifetime of information on Elvis to concur 100% that he could play the guitar. His teacher was probably a fuddy duddy and couldn't comprehend the immense talent she/he saw. ^m^😎^m^❤
👍
I have always wondered about that teacher. I think context is everything in comprehending something like this. And you have to consider that this was the deep south and the lines were strictly drawn, even in music. She was doubtless hearing blues phrasings in his singing because he heard so much front porch blues in Tupelo. And that was *not* appreciated at the time. He was still a child and couldn't have known what set her off.
He never had any proper training. He just picked up some chords from neighborhood blues singers in tupelo when his family lived in a black neighborhood. He was just born with a good ear and natural sense of rhythm.
@@beatnix99 True!
HI FIL WOW OH WOW WHAT A SHOW. THIS BRINGS BACK MEMORIES. ELVIS ROCKS AND SO DO YOU. LOVE YOU AND YOUR VIDEOES. YOU ARE THE BEST. THANKYOU FIL FOR BEING YOU AND FOR WHAT YOU DO. YOU ARE THE BEST. PEACE AND LOVE
Congratulations on the anniversary!
@@lynndow3185 sorry to hear you lost your mother at such a young age. My dad died of a heart attack at 42. PS how was the mac and cheese
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222 Thank you, James, I'm sorry your dad passed away so young, too. That sucks. But, the mac and cheese WAS really good!
Also it was many year for not play for a live audience..... Such a humble man....always the King of Music.
Ditto!
Lazy Kid LMAO 😂
Hey Jazz what's happening. I was checking out Chris Robinson and came across this I think it's new. It's titled "Let it fall", it's got a cool Groove
This author is an Elvis Fan & sheds some light on the issue :

The King, he was the ultimate entertainer. I smiled and laughed while watching him there and you just can't help that. No one can else seems to be able to immulate that feeling you got like Elvis did. He obviously knew enough guitar and piano to write and perform like he did. The King.
I still think it's one of the best live performances ever recorded (if not the best, that's just an opinion anyway). The whole 68 comeback is such a fun show. I especially love the sit-down parts, here Elvis oozes charisma and genuineness. He's putting on a show but at the same you can really see he's having so much fun.
The King!! Btw, loved your Elvis impersonation!! Awesome,. thanks man!
Thanks, Fil. Love the respect
I appreciate your great stories, Fil. Thank you. :).
Carl Perkins said he was a really good rythym player...
Scotty moore said also
He was so good his band didn't need a drummer in the early years at Sun.
@Koletti Pireaus if you don't have a sense of humor get the fuck off the internet and get that righteous stick out of your fat ass....
Johnny Cash said the same.
But it made such a low down bluesy sound that someone says "get dirty, baby."
Just adding that in.
Massive props, Fil. As ALWAYS love what u do.
Just saw your part 2 of Elvis playing the guitar. Fantastic n in depth video analysis ! Also was very interesting towards the end of your video: your observations of his singing, showmanship n blues influence. Kudos to you ! Looking forward to your next video.
Love it. Smile the whole time (anytime Elvis is on).
Sign of a great leader...surround yourself with the best. Elvis’ Band and Singers, WOW! Has there been better since?
Oh man, Thank You for this one! Elvis Presley: American Icon, Legend, Greatest of all time....The KING! Rock On brother!
Can't get enough Elvis
I have always loved Elvis. And as far as him playing the guitar, I always thought that he was a great guitarist. Thank-you for sharing.
Thank you Fil - I love your videos and enthusiasm for music. And a Goonies shirt? How can I not love you?
Exactly.
Such a good analysis of elvis’s vocals and guitar playing, well done from an elvis fan since the 1970s.brilliant.👍👍👍
I recall Scotty saying in an interview that the first time they played with Elvis...they were amazed by his natural sense of rhythm, his
pitch and the fact that even if he didn't know the chords to all the tunes they ran thru that day...he knew the songs and nailed the vocal
parts with his own patented "Elvis Tone"!
Top class review, so informative , thank you. Elvis's facial expressions are a performance in itself
Thank you for another great analysis Sir. You have a vast musical knowledge and appreciation. I take my hat off to you once again!
I appreciate you doing all that research. Great video.
Thank you so much for standing up for Elvis, he is my distant cousin and I learned how to play this song from watching Elvis and you explaing how Elvis is using 1 finger, I couldn't get it until I saw your last video, if it wasn't real I could not have learned it, keep up the good work
FIL the more anylases I watch from you the more I think you're the best at what you do, much appreciated!
Thanks!
Elvis Presley was one of my favorite singers, and I think he had an incredible voice. I thought he was a great guitarist and actor as well, and a great hip swinger too, lol. As always, you did an excellent analysis!
Huge Elvis fan. What was really cool about this performance that I haven't seen anyone else mention is; this is like MTV-Unplugged, long before MTV Unplugged.
I might have recommended this one before I'm not sure. I just recommended this comeback special the other day to a friend for sure. It was to show the sheer fun the man was having. The king, enough said. Thanks professor for this one, I'm sure you made a few people's night, at least a few women anyhow. PS Tesla
Love the King!👑 Great analysis! So glad he stuck with it! He showed that teacher!🤘🎸♥️
This is Great showcase of unbelievable talent Only the King could do!!! Long Live His talent 🙏!!!!
The power of this beautiful man❤ Yes, you can’t help but smiling looking at him!THANK YOU for your fair analysis!
It is a true joy to see you smiling, appreciating what you're seeing & listening to. And it's obvious how much research you do before seeing a video.
Love what you do.
Thanks!
This is my favourite Elvis performance, I think.
Aloha in Hawaii !!
He didn't perform much during the 60s since he was too busy making crappy movies
I like most of the '68 special, but if I had to name one tune, I'd go for "Trying to Get to You" or "Love Me."

I was 11 and my mom woke me up and she told me with tears in her eyes.
Wonderful job on that Phil! Elvis was unique..
Was so obvious back then how much he loved performing and got such joy out of it.
That was actually Scotty Moore's guitar. Elvis decided to "borrow" it.
Elvis was a good guitar player and quite a comedian. I didn't know that he hung around the black people. It shows that a musician's surroundings can be a positive influence on the style they play or sing. Another great review Fil
I love how well you do your research and how detailed you are...Thank you for Loving Music!!!
