Why do people hate this so much? It's a weird remake of a song that was originally weird to begin with. Musically it's a great atmospheric track

This is undoubtedly one of the best covers I have listened too.
I actually had the privilege of being in the studio as Ozzy was tracking his vocal for this song. I was MTV Exec at the time, and Sharon had been meeting with me to pitch a show called, "Dinner With Ozzy". Soon after, I left the network, and the show became....you guessed it, The Osbourne's! It was a great hang! I remember the producer trying to give Ozzy some direction on the main line...and Ozzy saying...(in Ozzy voice...) "That's Not The Way Ozzy Would Sing It". LOL. Classic!

I used to be terrified of seeing Ozzy as a child., whenever I was home alone watching TV and a vid like this pops up...as much as it excited me I was exposed to heavy metal, I literally feared he would appear out of the shadows in a dark corner I was 100% positive he was in the house and that I could sense his presence lmao

Badass cover. I had gotten the CD when it first came out. Wanting to see the lyrics. Disappointed they weren't there. Only that song though. Then I found out why. Later heard some other Peter Gabriel tracks. Eventually bought the 'So' album. Top notch music right there.
One of my favorite covers of any song ever. This and White Zombie's cover of Children of the Grave. And Vader's cover of Fight Fire With Fire.

Honestly, I don't understand why many critics and people considered this cover as bad. Is it because it is a nu metal band like Coal Chamber doing it? I don't get it. It's annoying that some people tend to mock and disown everything that musicians in this genre have done, they think that makes them cool, but in fact they are just being pretentious arrogant people who can't think for themselves. In my opinion, this is a great cover of Peter Gabriel's song, which stays true to the strangeness of the original song, but also gives the song a fresh face. Ozzy was a perfect choice to assist the song, because he was a big fan of Peter Gabriel as well.

I don't get all the negativity for this song. I liked the original and I like this one. Ozzy was a nice choice.

It's a really, really bad cover. Both Dez AND Ozzy are entirely off timing, off key, and drop notes at the detriment of the song. The instrumentation is muddy and really only hits the main riff.
If they were speaking in a different language, you would NEVER realize it was a cover of Shock the Monkey. Ozzy's involvement is the only reason this has any perceived positivity whatsoever - if someone fairly obscure produced this, people would be completely shitting on it.
Featuring Ozzy The Prince of Darkness himself this is a big deal 🙂

+DarknessShadows666 You should definitely check out Peter Gabriel, one of the more original and defining artists of the 80s. His 3rd album is his masterpiece in my opinion, though "So" is the biggest commercial hit. This is from his 4th album and I find the original to be way superior as it's more nuanced, original and inventive.

If it wasn't for Ozzy, well Sharon this band wouldn't have even had a chance to become successful because no one else was interested! Ozzy's voice is definitely one of the most unique in the music business of all time and I think that's what attracts people to his music which the fact that he is the Godfather of Metal! I love Ozzy because that man single handedly inspired enough REAL MUSICIANS to pursue their career in the metal and rock community! The big four would have never tried to make it performing metal until they saw what was beginning to happen with Black Sabbath! Not to mention, the deeply dark tone that just had everyone hooked within a couple of their songs! There will never be another band as influential as Sabbath mainly Ozzy because he was the driving force! On top of the impact he had on the community, he set up Ozzfest where Sharon scouted a lot of new talent and introduced them to the world!
