I still don't understand why there was so much hate for "nu metal" it was an interesting stepping stone from classic to modern metal and should be appreciated as such. Call it "simple", call it "dumbed down", but at its core it was still heavy rocking fun. ♪♫♪♪♫

+jingwumaster Nu Metal is a really diverse genre when Coal Chamber can be lumped together with bands like Deftones, korn and limp bizkit. I think the only thing that ties these bands together is that they use drop tuning. It's all subjective at the end of the day. I probably give Coal Chamber more credit than they deserve because they are nostalgic to me but I always thought they were really cool, nice and heavy, big grooves and catchy songs. Static X are musically similar i'd say.
I've always defined nu-metal as bands that focus way more on rhythm guitar and bass than modern metal. Coal Chamber and Korn are no exception. Usually nu-metal bands keep their "lead guitar" work to a minimum or at least very simple. Drums, bass, and guitar are usually glued together rhythmically in this case. By contrast, more modern metal bands like, Chimaira, Slipknot, or Devil Driver (same singer as cole chamber) focus more on vocal or lead guitar independence, melody, and progression.
revivedfears Nu metal is a diverse term but the bands still have a lot in common. As Trevor said, they focus more on rhythm than melody. Most nu metal bands incorporate other genres such as rap, hard rock and electronic music, and usually nu metal sounds angsty and pissed off. That's my interpretation of nu metal.

Mudvayne were a lot more than just a Nu Metal band.
Coal chamber was nu metal with a gothic aesthetic, as was the trend during the 90s/ early 2000s. Goth rock like Bauhaus, Christine Plays Viola, Lycia they were not. Industrial like Throbbing Gristle, Hide, or Skinny Puppy they were not.
Coming from a Coal Chamber fan who bought the albums and shirts.
5 years later, nu metal is unicorned just like all the other metal. Better save your cd's or make a backup . Rock has died.

I was born in the 80's; about the late 90s I was listening to Korn, Coal Chamber, Limp Bizkit, Manson, Slipknot, and other bands with that Nu-Metal sounds. Brings back memories.

For real. Its so much harder today to find good music. When I want good metal, nu metal etc. I can only listen to songs I have heard a million times. I think it would be such a financially smart decision to fill in the market niche of Nu-metal.
