About your point of circumstances pushing someone into evil, you are right. In Spec Ops: The Line, the main character's friend gets murdered by a bunch of civilians in a war zone and the player has the option to open fire on them. And many players do that.
Oh man, can’t wait for your reactions and reviews towards the future books in the series if you do decide to continue. Things just get crazier, but at the same time you are continuously blown away by this incredible story Frank Herbert created. Especially looking forward to your review/reaction to God Emperor of Dune once you get to that book lol. My personal favorite, and definitely one of the most cerebral of his works
The whole 'Paul is the bad guy' claim people are making is a bit of an oversimplification of what Frank Herbert actually intended. Paul was intended to be a critique of 'Heroic' leaders that people blindly follow out of religious beliefs, their charisma, or because they have elevated the 'hero' into something that the hero themselves know they're not. It becomes much more apparent in the next book that Paul is disgusted by the things that he is pushed into doing by the religious movement he has been forced to lead but can't control, and by the way that people blindly serve him even though he knows the religion is hollow. Frank Herbert always intended Paul to be this heroic figure by the end of the first book only to deconstruct the idea in the second.
Hell yeah this is my favorite novel, first read it as a teenager and since then I've read it 15 more times (I'm 40 now). I've gotten a bunch of my berk friends to read it and i even got BerserkDude on youtube to check it out so it's great seeing you read it as well👌
Chani is described in the book as killing Fremen challengers to Paul within Sietch Tabr .. although yes, it's brief. Shes more akin to a priestess or aid to the Reverend Mother in the text.
Great video! I also read the book for the first time a couple days ago, and something I noticed is that Paul only likes chani because it’s something of his own doing… if that makes sense. Basically, he loves chani, someone he’s not supposed to love as a fuck you to the Bene Gesserit, and paths he sees he’s going down. His love for chani is something he did out of his own free will
In the book Chani does kill Freemen who come from different Freemen groups who want to challenge Paul. Paul has trained her in the Bene Geserit fighting style. He is concerned learning this and Chani explains that word will get out that Mua’dibs mate will out fight you before you can challenge Paul. It will cut down on challenges.
Wow crazy! I've been reading this book too on and off for the past few weeks, only have 200 more pages to go and it's mind blowingly good. I hated the first Dune movie, then fell in love with the second movie, and when I heard of the direction the series goes I knew I had to read the books. My only real complaint is that getting into the world of dune was pretty complicated and I kept having to go to the encyclopedia for everything, until things finally started making more sense. Paul having the trip with the fremen after eating their food was scary, when it was stated that people that take spice typically push a lot of thoughts into their subconscious, but for Paul, whos mind was trained by his mother, a bene gesserit, and who was also on the way to becoming a mentat, the trip would have a huge effect on his mind compared to others. The detail the author goes into is insane, how Paul saw all these different paths, that the cave was a nexus point to all these different possible futures, where Paul just wanted to sit down and do nothing because it was too much for his mind to handle, but then the realization that even sitting down could effect the future made it so that he could never really relax, and was constantly aware that any action could cause new paths to open, and others to close. Really really loving the book, as soon as I finish I'm jumping straight into Messiah.
@@j.2512you’re not the brightest, I see. 😂 because Paul doesn’t have an assassination attempt on his life, has his entire house exterminated, has to flee into the desert, has to flee before even getting used to his new home, has a sandworm chase him, has to live up to the legend of being a God, (something he never wanted) and along side all of that had major FLAWS that keep him moving on the path towards his jihad. But Paul is a Gary Sue??? Where?

Given that you have read/ watched very similar things as I throughout your life, I feel that you should read some Cormac McCarthy, starting probably with the road, and then Blood Meridian, which is basically berserk as a western.
Im glad you enjoyed it! Dont forget paul was also a mentat. Basically, it's a human computer. Some people say the next books arent the same but i think there are some ideas in there you will enjoy.
Apparently, FH wrote Dune in response to two US presidents. Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. While people were rightfully quick to criticize Nixon, people had blind faith in Kennedy. He believed JFK to be the more dangerous leader as due to his popularity, few were willing to call out his BS.
He was absolutely correct in that. Nixon and Kennedy were quite similar in ways people don’t realize because Kennedy got good press. Kennedy even stole his election in a far shadier manner than Watergate.
Awesome man, Dune is really breaking through to new audiences right now. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Messiah, it’s a lot shorter but it’s been controversial since it released!
Glad you read dune. The movies are spectacular too. Im kinda new on it also. I saw the old movie as a kid. So when i saw a remake was coming i studied up on the lore and reading. One of the best movies and books in my opinion.
Its going to be interesting to watch as you read the other books. I think your analysis won't change much as you progress but will be refined a bit. Things start getting wacky after the 2nd book. One of my top 5 book series I've ever read. And the Paul actor must be very difficult to cast. Gender swapping Kynes worked in the movie, but it also doesn't really fit into literary Dune because gender roles are heavily entrenched which is one of the reasons the Bene Gesseritt exist. The BG give women a place of power within the strict feudal system. The Fremen seem a bit more freeform meritocracy but not entirely.
