Epipremnim Pinnatum Variegata care and propagation

- The variegated epipremnum pinnatum is a very underrated big-leafed variegated plant that no one talks about. The adult form of this plant will develop huge fenestrations (Split leaves) if allowed to climb up a pole or wall. Despite its beauty, I have never seen the adult form of this plant in person. Perhaps this is because they are thought to be a more “common” plant. Well I hope we can fix that because this plant is so stunning (and fast growing). In this video I cover full plant care including watering and lighting, and show you how I propagate it in various mediums (Soil, sphagnum moss, water). I even show you a 3 weeks update (get ready for some serious root porn)!

Let me get organized.. throws plants on floor much better 😂
HAHAHAHAHA I LAUGHED so hard, lol
Cackled when you chucked those cuttings 🤣 even those are so expensive now. Anything variegated is expensive haha
This is the 1st whole video that tackles on how to take care and to propagate an Epipremnum Pinnatum Albo. As always, I find your vid interesting and informative. Sending ❤ and 👍 from the 🇵🇭
Thank you so much 😌🙏🏽
okay.. i'm getting addicted to this channel. second after planterina 🤣🤣🤣
Oh my... Planterina is a godess... haha I worship her
Same !! They’re both my favorite plant youtubers!! So many good tips, my room is finally turning into a jungle 🌿🥰
Planterina was my fave but I LOVE how he edits in progress so once I found OnlyPlants, I've never gone back 🤣
That's a plant dad for you, not even trying to be careful with the kids.
In the Philippines we already have a new variegated varieties of Epipremnum Pinnatum which is the mint, marble, tricolor and aurea. We also have the variegated Cebu Blue as well. I just recently completed all of them in my collection. I believe these new varieties is not yet available outside the Philippines.
OMG THEY MUST BE A FORTUNE OUTSIDE
I bought this plant because of this video.
😀
OR, you can just NOT answer your phone and check messages later...
😅
I love your videos. I am a new plant mom at the age of 76 and your videos have helped me so much. Thanks for all your info.
Thank you too!
have some respect for your plants holy hell
I always enjoy how thorough you are with the care/propagation/updates! My favorite thing to watch while eating a snack or sometimes a meal lol
Hha thank you so much 😌🙏🏽
I just recently got this plant, i repotted it and haven’t seen much growth. I have two stems , one grew and one hasn’t .
Thanks for such great video. Can anyone help me with my question... I am not sure what soil or what to mix in to use for my epipremnum pinnatum variegata. I'm not propagating it. I just want it to grow well and tall. But I have seen many people using different kind of soil which so confusing :((((
Aroid potting mix. I have a video with that title and it explains why its good for climbing aroids 😀
@@onlyplants Coming right away! Thank you!
I received a epipremnum pinnatum aurea and it has very low variegation. Will it show more variegation if it receives more bright light?
Its not 100% but chance increase greatly 😀 good luck!
What a beautiful plant! Thank you, I have learned so much about propagating from your videos!!🙏🏼
Thank youu. Propagation is such an integral part of caring for plants.
What soil medium you usually used? From Philippines.Thank u
The aroid potting mix. I have a video with this title, hope it helps 😀
HI, another great video! May i ask what is the ambient temperature and humidity the cuttings were in? I am going to hack up my plant to so your film arrived at a great time.
Hello its 80-90% humidity outdoors in Jakarta 😌
Очень хороший садовник, спасибо . Very good gardener, thank you
Thank you ❤️❤️
Hi I’m new parent to this baby and the sone of the Ariel roots are drying up do I need to spray the coco coir pole every day? I live in hot and humid area!
You may have to mist the aerial roots, and maybe have it attach to a moss pole and mist that pole to encourage it to grip into it
The way he threw his cuttings💀💀
So much propagation videos as opposed to care :(
Haha I’m a propagation freak. But sometimes propagation is how we truly master a species. By studying root formation, growth pattern , and growing them in variable conditions.
@@onlyplants Hello! Thank you for replying! I didn't even think you would see this!
That is very true.
Anyways, I meant to say that in general because I just ordered two pinnatum albos but all the videos I see on YT are mostly propagation xD
I just got my Eppipremnum Pin. Var. yesterday and it has mature leafs, but i saw that someone did cut it. How can i make her push out bigger leafs? Can you make more videos about this plant, because there arent many on yt
Check out my video titled “moss pole” on how to encourage big leaves 😀
@@onlyplants i will, thank you
Completed ur 1k.
Say thanks.😀
😀😀
There is so much improvement on this channel!!!!!
Thank you 😌🙏🏽
When I tell you my golden pothos love me but the marble queens are FUSSY 😩 In the same week mine burnt from.too much light and then when I moved it to a shadier spot it got root rot 😭
Oooh yes but these are important lessons we need hehe. When plants live in lower light they take in far less water.
Yes 😩 I've now put the only promising propagation outside in a clear cup with a dome (after it grew some roots in water) 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
Hi Sean, I know this video is very old, but just hoping you'd see my comment anyway and help me out. About a month ago, I chopped off my Epipremnum Pinnatum variegated (although mine is just a small plant, unlike yours) and propagated the chopped off part in water. It seems to be doing well. However, the mother plan did not fare very well at all. The leaves become so droopy suddenly. I thought it was thirsty but nothing changes when I water them. I haven't checked the root yet but other than the droopy leaves, there's no browning on the edges or signs of pests whatsoever. I plant it in terracota pot, by the way. Previously it was in a plastic pot. Any advice is appreciated.
It might have had root rot, causing it to lose lots of roots and unable to take in enough water to feed the leaves. Its worth it to unpot and check. When you propagate a few leaves off, they actually require far less water than before - hence its often time rotted after propagation.
Do DM me on @bo.tan.ist with photos it might help a lot.
@@onlyplants I tried but the link doesn't work. But anyway, I took it out of the pot. The root, while not crazy good, are not rotting or anything. But it also doesn't look strong.
What is ur plant dirt mix
Do i know about soil mix?
Wow.... you shoot your videos on a mobile phone? They were so good, i was thinking what DSLR you are using.
How long does it take for the epi yellow leaves to split?
That really depends on many factors… to increase likelyhood/speed, let it grip and climb onto something, give it great care, excellent light without burning it, and fertilize lightly.
i just ordered an hour ago a marble variegated e pinnatum if you don't know what it looks like look it up its incredible
The Chatime cups made me feel seen as an asian! OMG hahaha love this vid, Sean.
Hha asian representasian!
@@onlyplants OMG it’s what you’re doing Sean! Sean for a-sean representasean! HAHAHA
I'm so happy to find this video. I just got my first Epipremnum Albo and Epipremnum Marble delivered today. They're beautiful little plants, and I always appreciate your knowledge.
😀😀
I love EP's!! So beautiful and so affordable.
What if I don’t want the plant to get big. What happens? Will it die?
You can keep cutting it back, each time you cut it you kinda turn it into a younger clone of itself. You can also grow these as pothos! They bush out and trail well for a while. So you have all these backup plants in case you want to let one of them grow big some day
@@onlyplantsthank you so much for the advice!! Love your channel ❤😊
Nice🥰
Hi Sean! How are you? I love ❤️ your channel so much! You are awesome!
how did you get varigated dragon tail?
They are kind of everywhere here 😅
I just love this! I can watch you all day! 🌱🌿🤩
Ohlala...looooovvvve the Epipremnum Pinnatum...even the "regular" green one...such a stunning plant!Yours is absolutely gorgeous,obviously...😍🍃
Have a nice night !
Thank you 😌😌 I will grow them right this time! Since I kinda messed the last one haha.
thank you so much!now i know how to propagate my epipreminum coz i've been wanting it to multiply and share it with my plant lover friends too!
❤️❤️
This is unexpected upload! Been looking for pinnatum albo vid for yearsss!!! 💚
Whoaaa I hope you find one soon. They are abundant here in Indonesia
It's so weirdly satisfying to see you grab that potting mix material and fill into the pot 😆.
Nice one !
Is it ok to propagate using hidroton? Anyway thanks for the information. greeting from Bandung 🙏
Yes you can if thats the media you are comfortable with or have on hand
So glad I've seen this as I've not long got a cutting of this plant. Currently in spag moss need to get a pole for it for when I 're pot it..x
I finally imported one of these guys after wanting one for so long!! It was cheaper to import with 60 dollar shipping on a 30 dollar plant than to buy one where I live, the very few that exist where I live at least a hundred dollars for a unrooted cutting. Had a mini heart attack watching him huck em on the floor
😅😅
Epiprennum variegated yellow 😊
What is ur plant dirt mix
I have a video titled “onlyplants potting mix” do give that one a look 😀
Can we have an update sir?
There should be updates at the end of the videos ya 😀 Ive actually propagated lots of these since the video. Its maybe the 3-4 th generation now
Now i only refer to your channel for planting tips and care..im from Malaysia and we have the same weather which is perfect guide compare to other’s 4 seasons channel…😃
😀😀😀
Hi Sean i hope you and your family are ok with that volcanic eruption. i googled Java and Jarkata and it's quite far but I know that ashes could spread miles and miles away
We are good thank you. The volcano is on the other side of the continent 😀
OMG you chucking your plants on the floor hahahaha I wish I was laying under them to swoop them up and run.
😅😅 you put that image in my head
Hi, I recently bought this from a nursery and it already has a sprout on its node however it was accidentally removed by my dog. Does it still have a chance to survive? I'm so worried about what will happen.
Is there another unused node from below? If there is another branch should sprout from that lower node. If thats the only node than unfortunately you may not have a new branch 😅
I love your mellow jaz background music.
Thats actually my brother playing jazz 😀 hes a pro
How long does a small juveneil epi pinnatum albo take to fully mature? Thanks
Depends largely on your care and the health of the plant you started with. I would say a year is a good time to see some major shift from juvenile to split leaves bigger than 2 human heads
I just planted a cutting without roots in a cocopeat medium. Should I pull it out and place it in water first to get roots?
If you are confident with moisture control of your medium you can keep it there. Its higher risk of rot though
Hi Sean, thanks for this vid...I was recently gifted a rooted juvenile plant ( 4-5 tiny leaves) and now have it on a moss pole in bright indirect light (north/northeast facing windows ). It's officially spring here in Sydney now so I'm really excited to watch this baby grow and hopefully get the mature leaves yours has!😄 Do you let yours dry out COMPLETELY between waterings? ty
I am an overwaterer so I dont think ive let them go bone dry before… they seem to suffer a bit from overwatering but are surviving. I do recommend to let them dry out completely (but not for long) if you cab
@@onlyplants Thanks so much for your advice Sean...will take it on and see how we go🙏
Great sharing man... D u have any idea how to minimize leaf burnt on this varigated epiprenum since i have this plant too but everytime she got new half or just 1/3 albo/white varigated, they always burnt :(, thanks, rgds from Pekanbaru, Riau
Yeah they are quite sensitive... but I have grown some from cuttings and they get direct sunlight since they are babies and now I have 0 burns on these. Do not give them afternoon direct light or full sun though. They need a bit of shade
@@onlyplants appreciated and thanks for your tips... how bout watering ? d u water by daily or weekly or when the top of soil dry ?
I got a plant at ikea and its labeled like this but I dont think its the same cause it is really small with small leafs and it does not climb up it hangs down :(
Try propagating a stem and let it climb, see if the leaves get big or fenestrate 😀
Hi. My name is Oresa. I need some advice on what to do with my epipremnum. I would like to send you a pic of my plant for you to look at. How can I contact you?
Hello please DM me on instagram @bo.tan.ist
If I only want to cut and propagate the top part, What will happen to the remaining plant? Will it died of?
The remaining plant will put out more leaves. Do check my updates at the end of the video I always show the parent plants in all my propagation videos 😀
So maybe you can give some advice. I really want an albo or a thai but can't bring myself to pay those prices! I had mixed feelings about your review, it's a lovely plant, and you would recommend it as an alternative?
Absolutely. You can google up the adult photo of this plant and see for yourself 😌
@@onlyplants Thanks, beautful!!
I had 2 cuttings of this plant with matured leaves each.. it took me 2 months to see a new sprout from one of the cuttings. Is that normal or should i cut the leaf and leave just the node?
That is normal for cuttings.they will grow fast once you have a few leaves.
Hey 👋🏾 do you have any cutting you would like to sell
Hello I havent got export permits 😀
what the name of my plants?
Awesome! Awaiting patiently for more aroid propagation :P
More to come!
Hi Sean! I’d like to ask, I just noticed just now when I am inspecting the leaves of my EP. an inch before the leaf, there is a bump, are these nodes for new growths? I see them in almost all the leaves of my EP. Thanks.
If its an inch before the leaves its usually extra aerial roots. Because the growing “eye” is usually right where the petiole meets the main stem.
@@onlyplants oooh cool!!! That is cool to know Sean. So that I could position it to the pole. Yey!!! Thank you!!!
Hi Sean. I couldn't find a video about Epipremnum pinnatum Dragon's Tail. I found one at a big box store and like the dark green foliage and how quickly it develops fenestrations. Have you grown it or is it too common there? I live in Canada and it isn't commonly seen in big box stores. I bought two and one had a long stem growing straight out to the side. I channeled my inner Sean and cut it back and have 7 node cuttings for water propagation. How many roots do you recommend before potting into soil? Thanks. Love the plant tour videos as well.
Ive never heard of this species so it must be rare here. I would wait for secondary roots to appear before potting them ups usually with epipremnums its 4-6 weeks
@@onlyplants it's just the green variety. Thanks for the reply.
How long that it takes to achieve that size from juvenile stage?
About a year I think. Have to give them a moss pole to encourage bigger leaves
Thanks for the video. After watching you, I investigated my EPV as why It was not growing as it should, long behold it got root rots.😣
It was doing well in Leca for a while. Then I added too much water and forgot to pour the water out (bad parenting).😓
Since the soil was the winner in your video., I put mine in soil too. Yep, I'm a copy cat. lol
Epipremnum Pinnatum Variegata is so beautiful. It's such an underrated plant.
Oooo yes they cannot tolerate overwatering. They are slightly harder than V monsteras.
Don't know if you know this or not, but hydrogen peroxide is a big help with root rot! I just found out this summer and I am never without it now. Lots of info on it. Good luck!
@@renegadetherapist5664 Thank you. I have heard about it. And you are right, it's very helpful. When I clean used Leca, I soak it in hydrogen peroxide before reusing it. 😊
Hi! Did u water them right after sticking them into those pots?
Yepp always do
Can you please list out the aerated soil mix ingredients... Will be really grateful ❤️👍 also looking forward to you starting your soil mix soap and maybe someday plants shopping from you 😀 best always 🍻
Hey Sean, I got a cutting last week with about 7 leaves on a vine and super long water roots. The leaves are still tiny, perhaps the length of my index finger. So still a very young plant with a skinny vine. I pot it in Leca and a weak nutrient solution-and the leaves started turning yellow within 3 days. I took it out of the Leca today and put it in water. I‘d really love to grow it in Leca. Think this will be possible? Maybe I pointed it too fast. Straight out of box. Right now I’m hoping that the last two green leaves will hold up, and I don’t end up with wet sticks. :(
When they have lives in water for that long it is difficult to move them to soil. This is why I never keep my propagation in water for more than 2 months max. I would cut them as single leaf cuttings and propagate them. Starting with new plants seem to be the only way out of this.
@@onlyplants I’m afraid you’re right. Will do that. Thanks for answering. Have a blessed day!
My epipremnum is still having tiny leaves after being given a pole. I am spraying the pole with water daily, keeping it wet for the plant to grip on, 3 new leaves have since grown but they are in very weird shapes. But still no big leaves coming out yet. Fingers cross.... hope to grow them as well as yours. 😅
Yes theres that awkward phase usually with weird leaf shapes but they will get big 😀
@@onlyplants thanks for reassuring. This awkward phase is pretty interesting with funny shapes. It is almost like this plant is going through puberty. Lol. 😅
just owned a thai constallation monstera they are beautiful and your vidz have gave me some tips :) thank you! can't wait for my monstera to grow bigger .. now just need a stake
After watching your wonderful video I ordered an EPV cutting to start with since they are very hard to find in Greece and very expensive to get a whole plant from sellers in Europe. I love the leaves and varigation!!!
Whoaaa they are so inexpensive here now because of oversupply
@@onlyplants Sean!!! You are soooooo lucky my friend!!!!! ❣️
I have the same plant but with the 1st form of leaves (about 10 leaves ) should I propagate it ? Does it help the leaves to grow bigger ?
If its not climbing up something now, its leaf will diminish in size. And its hard to train a mature plant up a pole so I would recommend cutting it and propagating. Keep in mind the top cutting is one that will produce larger leaves faster.
@@onlyplants its actually climbing on a pole (about arm-length pole) and climb longer than the pole plus creating some air roots . So , should I cut the top and let the mother plant climb the same pole ? Or just change my pole ?
Thank you for your information 🙏🏼
Hi! Did you water the cuttings directly right after you put them into the potting mix? Thanks😊
yeppp I always do.
@@onlyplants you put them on shaded area for how long? And when to water again? Thank you so much!
This is so helpful, thank you!!
I love your well detailed explanation about every plant you're discussing, and also your honesty by telling people like me ( who's obsessed with monstera albo) to try to appreciate other variegated plants as well since monstera albo is very expensive nowadays. Thank you. God bless. Much love from the Philippines!
Thank youu. There are so many cool species out there!
When can I transfer from sphagnum moss to soil?
When you see secondary (finer) roots appear from the main root may be the best time. I guess 6 weeks ish
How long does it take to give a new leaf for a propagation of 1 leaf matured cutting? Thanks
About 3 months to see the first leaf 😀
Wondered if does the new leaf has already split?
That looks so nice in the new pot!
I’m about to get this plant. Didn’t know it grow that big!
What happened finally?
Is the root develop better in moss or water?
Depends… If the node has little or no aerial roots its 100% better in water. But if its got some roots already, best in moss or straight into potting media
👍👍👍👍
Nice work👍🏽 and I’m learning a lot from you.🙏👏🏾🥰 glad I found your channel. I am Korean lives in Minnesota forgive my bad English.
Thank you so much. Kamsahamida 😅
B😍eautiful Plants & Nice information Brother.. Thanks for sharing 😊🌱🌿🌿🌿

Thanks for care tips, from the Philippines I
Is this the same as epipremnum pinnatum aurea? They look the same but not sure if it’s actually the same plant
I have a feeling same plant but different variegation sport
@@onlyplants yeah I tried to find info on it and can’t find it anywhere. Thanks for video. Got a cutting coming in the mail
Beautiful plant💚
I wish i could buy this plant in my country. I cant find it :(
You are such an amazing man i mean i think you could even grow all these in the Rockie mountains where i live lol thanks for alll your knowledge Sean 💚💚💚 (do you celebrate a holiday called Halloween? 👻🎃💀 ) October 31st?
Hello, I did halloween parties and dressing up when I lived abroad but not here in Indonesia. Its uncommon here.
👻 but I will be doing a spooky plants video!
Oh yayayayayyayayaaaaayyyy the video I have been waiting for!!!!!! this is definitely on my wish list! thanks @sean! ooooo.... peperomia incana - love love love velvety leaves BUT i didnt know how to care for it ... so, it didnt do well so i gave it away to a better plant parent ... I hope ;(
Oooo they are quite easy. Ill show you next week!
Those precious aerial roots 😢 i’d just break the pole open. It’s not worth it keeping the pole while sacrificing the roots!
Awww yeah usually roots come off easily (monsteras/philodendrons) but this one really hangs on!
Hi! Just curious you dont let the stems callous over? How do you prevent them from rotting?
I don’t wait for callous... rot happens with some cuttings naturally... in my experience about 5-10% of cuttings dont make it. With begonias its 70-80% failure 😌
That is a gorgeous pot. Do you have a specific place you order from?
I get pots online and at roadsides 😌
Love your channel!!! 👌😍🌱🌱🌱Best always👍 NJ
Thank you so much. Hope you guys are safe and sound over there 😌
Hey..What can I do if the trunk is completely green?
Is there a possibility to get the variegation back? :o
Hello, unfortunately no... you’ll have to cut the plant back to the previous variegated stem. Reversion is sign of insufficient light 😌
@@onlyplants Thx for the fast answer
