@@venge54is17 I remember as a kid in the 70s One A Day multi-vitamin commercials. That of course was over forty years ago. I guess we are still waiting for that flood of kidney disease patients due to multi-vitamin use.
@@johnow7 well I'm from EU, I remember that multivitamin supplements came in late 90s here, I was working in supplement store in 2005,we sell protein powders etc and it was the only store in whole country till 2007, and even then older people didn't use nothing, not even vitamins because they were old fashion, in last 10 years it is absolutely crazy, people drinking protein supplements, taking 300g of protein a day, creatine, multivitamines, etc etc etc...kids in elementary school want ti be muscular taking powders etc.. so this heavy users are at most in their 40s... tsunami is coming, believe me, there is absolutely no good long term effect study out there, because kidneys don't show damage for decades and no study will take 20 or 30 years

Well I’m not the one making videos about vitamins, so who is really obsessed here?

The difference is obsessing over taking them Or obsessing over people not taking them if there isn't a need... I take melatonin because I really can't sleep most nights but there's a reason of I was just taking them to get a "better" nights sleep that would be obsessing but I literally don't sleep without it... There are studies that have used multivitamins (a LOT, and every single micronutrient) in the treatment of ADHD, Bi-Polar, and Depression. Studies showed they were very effective both short and long term! The hypothesis is modern diets and agricultural practices (deficiency in nutrients within soil) have lead to a large amount of people with deficiency.
@@jamesblames Nutrient deficiency is a lot more common than expected nowadays, I think it's mainly to do with the soil
@@RonaldinhoGoat Modern diets as in eating highly processed, low nutrient high energy foods. I should've elaborated.
@@jamesblames 100% - I have very low vit D and iron so supplement for those, and magnesium for migrane prevention. The real game changers for my ADHD have been the B6 and iron. The ADHD symptoms are particularly terrible during the luteal phase of my menstrual cycle and here the B6 especially has improved my mood and cognitive dysfunction. I don't eat fortified foods or meat/dairy/eggs so these minerals and vitamins are essential for my brain function. The week I ran out of iron and B6 was a rude shock.. I love how you simplified this topic for your audience PERFECTLY! As a Dietitian Nutritionist, I definitely see people (most notably influencers) treating supplements as if they’re magic cures, or that they’re 100% legit even if it’s a brand new company with zero creditability and transparency.
There’s definitely risks with taking supps - like quality, purity, and does-it-contain-what-it-says in the quantity that it says. My rule of thumb - only supplement when there’s a true need. And find a GMP certified brand that’s ultra transparent about their ingredients!
I couldn't agree more! Well said. I have as a long time competitive athlete believed in certain supplements but was always cautious of their sourcing and production. And why I finally settled on one brand and company.
@@TheWellnessAI what is the source of your vitamine?
@@karrenpopovics2780in my case its Kirkland multivitamins. Its cheap but certified by “USP”
But if you want to get it naturally you basically have to be a nutritionist otherwise you’ll definitely be deficient. People le vegetarians for example think they are healthy because of veggies and fruits but could potentially lack vitamins b12 and e which are important to the body as they are mostly from meat. You cant just say you have a balanced diet because you have fruits and veggies, you have to study what kind of fruits and veggies your taking and how you cook them.
@@karrenpopovics2780how you cook them is also important like for example boiling mushrooms actually remove its nutrients. Microwaving them funnily enough is a healthier way to cook them. Grilling is also good to retain its nutrients

As a vegan, we don't need supplements.. B12 is needed by both vegan and meat eaters though now many vegan options are fortified
Thanks for making this video. I'm a pharmacy intern working towards getting my PharmD, and whenever I counsel a patient about vitamins and tell them that, unless their doctor told them to get it, they probably don't need the supplement that they're asking me about, they look at me like I'm crazy. There's a lot of misinformation out there and it's important that we educate patients, especially when OTC labels can be so misleading!
I hope you keep your attitude. Unfortunately a lot, if not most, pharmacists are completly on board with this scheme. I couldn't believe it when our friendly pharmacist convinced my mum to buy that bs vitamin C that's all magic and natural and about 20x the price of regular vit C.
Ok I'm completely on board with this video, but there are cases when doctors actually don't tell you about a certain supplement when you really need it. And there's research to prove it's effectiveness. I'm talking about D-mannose. I've had so many UTI's and been to many doctors and none of them recommended it to me, and then I saw people talking about it in forums. Haven't had a UTI since taking it. It's not FDA approved, and not recommended by doctors, so what? It changed my life 😉
Rada Surmach while that’s wonderful that you’ve found a solution to something ailing you that doctors struggled to, this wont be the case in most other situations. the whole point of the video, as i’m sure you know, is that people are being misled into buying vitamins that may not even contain the things that the bottles say they do. in the end though if you feel better on a certain vitamin supplement than you do without it, and feel the investment is worthwhile, more power to you.
@@249aaa I agree. But I am afraid this video could also prevent people from taking vitamins or supplements when they actually need to. Most of the supplements sold from major brands actually contain the ingredients listed and are legitimate, so let's not draw big conclusions from small incidents of some ripoff companies.

Thank you for standing up for science when it would be so easy to use your platform to sell your own and get rich. People over profit
I mean, most doctors will tell you it's pointless to take vitamins and supplements. They'll tell you to take prescription meds instead because that's how they make their money. They don't get a dime if you buy supplements and vitamins elsewhere.
@@evalynn1863 That's true!!! A lot of them are "in bed" with pharmaceutical companies.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 they don't force you to take medications. If you come in with a problem, and there's a drug that will treat it, they'll prescribe it for you. That's kind of part of their job you know. And it's irrelevant that doctors tell you it's pointless to take supplements, what matters is _scientists_ say it's pointless - at least, in most cases. These supplement companies prey on people's ignorance. People get drawn to supplements because they think 'natural' means 'safer,' which it doesn't. Natural vs unnatural chemicals are still chemicals, and they may or may not be safe. The difference between drugs and supplements is pretty simple: the former have been proven to work and tested for safety, the latter haven't.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 Can we just let this myth die? Cause that's literally the argument of EVERY supplement peddling asshole on the internet. All it takes is to say "Doctors are in bed with Big Pharma" and that then legitimizes them to sell you untested snake oil. And the irony of calling medical doctors profit hogs while using your own popularity and reach to profit off of charlatanry is lost on most of these people. Just stop saying it until you have actual proof of a actual doctors (that's doctorS with an s) prescribing actual medical drugs unnecessarily AND getting away with it.

Thats Vitamins as a necessary. And its a good thing.
I can agree multi vitamins can most likely not help. But I disagree with certain things your saying. I know there's beef between functional medicine and conventional medicine but It's crazy how you think most people get all the vitamins that is required to not have a deficiency and in AMERICA of all places. Vitamin D and zinc and potassium are one of the most deficient vitamins out there. And just because you can get these vitamins from foods doesn't necessarily mean it's process in your body correctly aswell and or it's from a good source. I guarantee you almost everyone in this country has or will have a bad gut issue that has been proven to give vitamin deficiencies that leads to emotional and mental disorders just to name a few examples. So yes it is necessary to use supplements specially if you don't consume what your suppose to eat. Conventional medicine bloodwork doesn't fully show all vitamin deficiencies btw... essentially you won't really need to take vitamins if you know what you're consuming but odds are people can't afford quality foods or don't simply know how to nourish themselves properly.

Cathrine Lundqvist I’m taking the 80 mg ones and at first he told me to take it twice a day and now that I went from 8 to 17 I am taking it only once a day and I’ve been taking it for 5 moths so I hope to feel good asap
I was recommended to take a vitamin C tablet along with the iron to help with effectiveness. I had the same problem as you, with not feeling any better after about two months. Luckily, vitamin C is water soluble, so it can’t hurt you. Maybe talk to your doctor about it.
Thank you sir. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Dr. Mike... it’s more about healthy habits
*casually just plays a clip of a video with him at a TED Talk that I knew nothing about and doesn’t bother to explain anything*
He has a video where he talks about the whole experience :)
*nvm fam looks like I’m just stupid*
*thx for the update my dude*
TEDx, not TED. TED would have never requested him.
For a moment I got concerned about the 5th point aaand then I remembered that I live in the EU and we actually regulate what goes into our foods, including vitamins and supplements. Yay Europe, good job 🙌🏻😅
I’m on 4000 units of vitamin D in the winter months and 2000 units in the summer months. Dr prescribed. Every year at my physical we check my levels.
I've been wanting to dial back on some, definitely will now
Why should you? His original point was logically flawed, there is low vitamin deficiency and lots of people take vitamins so don't those two things seem to go together? He said nothing that convinced me that vitamins are unnecessary.
I went to my doctor and said that I need vitamin supplements and he said to get a tone of fruits and vegetables. So I took a tone of fruits and vegetables.
Does it make you colorful now? Like Rainbos shade here and there?
@@tonycaeleste9718 I don't know man. Diss stuff is crazy. Wish I knew about fruit and vegetables could haved saved a lot of money, not having to buy "those essential oils".
But 1 Apple is same cost as 1 multivitamin bottle here xd
@@MegaRockzer but one apple doesn't equal one tablet both quality wise as well as tolerance wise
@@BrijeshKumar4599 1 bottle is 30 caps , i mean if we think just vitamin wise , the multivit sounds better
My mom is obsessed with vitamins right now and I tried telling her this lol
Maybe she'll listen to Dr Mike
Benardine Appiah Konadu not mine
Sameeee
In my case is my aunt, every fucking message on WhatsApp is "use this and it will grow a new kidney on you" (I only have one) or "do that to stop you to overproduce collagen" this pasts days I really am tempted to block her 🤬
I tried but she wouldn’t listen.
RD here! I typically do not recommend supplements to my patients. HOWEVER, I take a MVI every day. When I stop it for even a week, my nails get very brittle, and my skin gets dry. But that's just personal preference. To each their own!
Great video! Someone should stop this obsession and all the youtubers, who claim to be 'healthy lifestyle gurus' and recommend to people to take tons of supplements , without having any medical education.
I love how he doesn’t put ads on his videos
React to Shane Dawson's medical conspiracy theories
Oooooh. Don't know what they are, but they sound juicy
SEND THIS UP
Yes! That'd be great! Or a collab with Shane!
YAS
Dr Mike Is the real deal
I think I will listen to you Dr Mike. I do like my magnesium for pain relief etc and my B complex I hope helps with my anxiety. I will take vitamin D in the winter though as I live in Ireland. But I eat pretty well. Love my veg. So I will make my diet more varied. Thanks ☘
What about supplements like fish oil, probiotics and glucosamine
I also wonder about that?
FYI, most probiotics that aren't refidgerated are garbage. Studies have shown that most all room temp probiotics have less than 10% of the CFU they say they originally have.
Also calcium
My doctor has me taking probiotics because of some health issues :) so far I feel great with the ones I'm taking. Fish oil is also amazing for the joints and heart!!!
Kind of the same: if the doctor prescribed them, they may help. If you take them on your own, probably you don't need them.
Calcium can actually hurt you (my aunt had spasms in her hands and nervousness) so your doctor needs to prescribe the exact dose, which can or cannot be the one in the label.
Niiice, i LOVE YOUR NEW INTRO 👍👍👍
Its perfect
Same !
Hey Dr. Mike, idk if you’re going to see this but I was taking about $600 worth of supplements every 200 days consisting of different herbs, vitamins, and minerals thinking it was the “best form” that will help my body long term. After seeing this video, I decided to look back on my supplements and see if I really needed it and I really found out that I didn’t. I saved around $560 every 200 days because I only take a multivitamin and fish oil now. It really helped simplify my life and I feel even BETTER now but if it wasn’t for this video, I never would’ve reflected back on what I was taking. Thank you so much!
SOOOOO GOOD! THANK YOU!
86% has been taking a vitamin supplement, while only 24% had a deficiency. Doesn't that just tell you the vitamin has solved the deficiency? How do you know the other 62% wasn't deficient before they started taking supplement?
How about just buckle down and eat some vegetables?
@@rebeccahicks2392 I'm autistic and can't eat most foods because of texture and sensory issues
@@sorcererinasweater7670 what foods do you like to eat?
Because when you stop taking vitamins you can tell if u have a deficiency or not.
@@CalebKlinger You get that a deficiency is based on diet right? So if you supplement a vitamin, you'll not have a deficiency...
