I can't get enough of these quirky fun watches. I have 10 Vostok. I have used mine for diving in conjunction with my dive computer and it hasn't missed a beat or let in any moisture. A true testament to Russian engineering.
I’ve had a few of these now. Gave them to some friends that had zero interest in watches. They are now very into watches. I think that speaks volumes about them. Now I need to get another for me to keep. Great review Peter!
in Moscow, such a watch costs $ 80. I have a commander's watch of excellent quality. In general, I recommend a watch with a history. Thank you for the review!hello from Sergievo-Posad Moscow region;)
Great review. Nice to see someone who knows what he is talking about. I have an Amphibia that is over 20 years old and l have used the same bracelet the whole time.
Vostoc has a special place in my heart because a 1980s Vostoc was the first mechanical watch I could call my own. Sadly the previous owner might have damaged the movement but I still love it! It even says made in CCCP on the dial (of course it I written in Russian). I like the one in this video aswell. The case reminds me a little bit of the Doxa Sub 300 which I adore.
If it's from the 80s, it probably used a calibre 2209. Watches from that time are stil available on ebay so you should be able to drop in a new movement and the watch is good to go again.
Yet another Vostok I’ve got Peter!🤪🤣👍🏼 Earlier this week I actually watched the doco on the creators of the Vostok watch. A man & a woman of course in the USSR. When the diver was tested to breaking point in a depth /pressure testing machine, unbelievably it self destructed at an insane 836m! So 200m is wading depth!😂
Wow..836 meters...???? Ive read that they go to 400-500 meters, I didn't think they would handle more pressure than that. Incredible achievement for an inexpensive diver.
The hydraulic press channel offshoot channel that has been pressure testing watches and the Vostok did indeed get to 800m before the plastic “crystal” cracked. They also tested an oil filled watch which survived to 3km depth. Amazing.
Nothing sums up the cliché 'adversity is the mother of invention' more than a Vostok. What the Soviets were able to do whilst in the midst of a famine and under a genocidal maniac is nothing short of astonishing. I have more than a few that are 40-50yrs + old and run like, well... clockwork! Yeah, they're not particularly rare and sorta funny, but at the same time, fascinating. It's a bit like that story about how the Americans spent millions engineering a pen that would work in Zero gravity and the Russians just used a pencil! I know that story isn't true, but the underlying meaning, that's definitely true! Keep it simple stupid!
Amazing watches with a fascinating history, tough true 200 metres to and very mod able even for an armature like me. I must have about 25 now love them.
I love that you keep reviewing Vostok Pete! They're so much fun! That is a big case though! Mines smaller - an original - somewhere between '68-'75 - but exactly the same case shape with an 18mm lug width (...I think I sent you a photo?). Not only is it one of my most comfortable pieces, it's one that I ᴀʟᴡᴀʏs get comments on... although it's brass with chrome plating, so that maybe just because the reflection half blinded them! Great watches that never fail to make me smile...and occasionally giggle!
I got my first Vostok recently. It's a Amphibia 090659 as well, but it's the version with the polished case (didn't know there was another finish available). Mine came with a crappy bracelet though, so I changed it instantly and put on a tropic strap instead. Really fun watches for the money, and with a history as well.
I hate bracelets so always dump them anyway, but my last Amfibia seemed like it had a decent one. My fave Vostok is still the Komandirskie 1965/680953 lovely dresser
I agree with you conclusion. Lately I really enjoyed seeing watches with a 70's design and this watch is one of them. The blue dial goes well with the red colour accents and I like the font of the Russian writing. It's also good to see that there are Vostok watches with a usable bracelet other than the mesh strap. There are so many different designs, I couldn't get myself to buy a Vostok so far, but a few more of these reviews and really might be tempted. Cheers Pete! 👍
Your previous Vostok 420059 review is the one that convinced me to buy one. Apparently you can easily mod the bezels to have higher friction. I plan on doing that and adding a dual timing/timezone bezel insert, cant wait!!
To add more friction only have to change the wire spring. Usually when the wire is new you can not mount on the cage. You have to cut small piece until you desire . Then with a sandpaper remove any rough part from the cut, and I add a fine layer of dielectric grease to make the bezel move smooth and firm.
I have a vintage tonneau case vostok. Its the old manual wound movement 2209,the whole watch is like 12mm thick including the domed acrylic. The caseback does not protrude, its super flat so the lugs actually are like 2mm lower than the caseback if i put it on the table it can stand on the lugs. I had it serviced, as i live in the post communist eastern EU region there still are watchmakers with vast knowledge about these, so it cost me around 20euros and i now have a super accurate reliable and water resistant vintage watch. The dial is a spidar web cracked sunburst green, and the lumed markers are nice and deep beige. One of my favourite watches.
Great looking piece! Love the bezel upgrade and finally a decent bracelet! I’m anxious to get this bracelet on my next Vostok, as I enjoy butterfly clasps as well.
Had one of the ministry case models. It would lose a minute after 3 days and was heavy. Gave it to my dad and didn't think I would miss it. Bought an 090679 to replace it.
I bought a Vostok like this in October 2020 with the same case and rotating bezel and different face. I love it, and had complete faith in it. I wear it to work in a warehouse. And last week while unloading a truck. The second hand stopped. Even while doing the "seiko shake" and the manual wind. It sat dead for 3 hours. So I gave it a few good hits on my hand and it startes running and keeping time accurate. Vostok is a weird watch for sure. I can't tell if I love it or am sketched out. But for $80 it's a hell of an experience tool/toy.
I started collecting with pulsar, then moved on to be a seiko fan, so I never got around to buying one of these. Always liked the design though, and think the model you picked is what you think of , when you think of vostok. I think they are disposable in the sense that you'd never get it serviced, but the same can be said of the superior seiko skx. I've never serviced a watch yet and I've been collecting watches for over 30 years. I've got 2 Swiss autos, 2 Swiss quartz , a seiko auto and a dying kinetic. At some point I will have to fork out for a service , but don't hold your breath. The most I've paid for a watch is about £1300 , and that was a preworn captain cook, and to be honest, I think that's a sensible approach. I'm not sure spending big money on a watch is a good thing, as the quality isn't really any better bar say the movement. I've never been obsessed with accuracy so I can't see the point. I've found just as much enjoyment from a cheaper piece , if not more, so spending big bucks on something I'm not sure I want is just silly. This vostok isn't a rolex, but it does the same job. Great vid as always Peter, It's nice to see your still doing all price points !!!! Top man !!!
Now that's an Amphibia!! The 090 you are reviewing here is arguably the most original case used for the original Amphibia issued in 1967, and you picked a version with one of the very vintage dials. Yes, the lume will be terrible (but so period-correct!). That case comes in polished, blasted, and rotary brushed. With the hooded lugs it's one of the biggest Amphibia cases. Now there is a little detail here for you, Peter: Amphibias have always been all full solid stainless steel. It's the Komandirski line that have traditionally been plated brass, and many still are. The Komandirski line has recently been expanded or modified to basically include Amphibia cases (some of the watches you've reviewed have been these) and those are the versions that are solid stainless steel (since those cases have always been solid stainless steel). The 090 case you've got is also produced, periodically, in bronze but that is a limited edition project from Meranom.com.
I own two Vostoks (3-4 more in my wish list) and didn't know about that back and forth winding - learned something new (I do however know the date set hack) - thank you!
Mate just received a silver scuba dude.this week. Bought it from Russia and the rubber strap is brilliant and the lume is great.they are getting better. Delivery service sent by USP from Moscow amazing.this is my third vostok love em🤺.
The widow maker. I love it! 😁 You'd be dead, but the Vostok would probably be still alive!! Really want to get one, but always something else takes my attention and I buy it. But definitely 2021 is the year I buy a Vostok! Great review 👏
Well G'morning Peter, it's been awhile my friend 😀 . Two weeks ago my phone got broke so I've been offline until this evening when I bought a new one and I just got logged back into my UA-cam and wouldn't you know the first video I seen was this one and you know that put a smile on my face, thanks my friend 😁
Love the video, love Vostok! If you would like one of these with a brushed finish surely a man of your calibre could apply brushing with a scotch pad to a polished case? Just a thought, maybe something the modders might have done already? Take it easy bro!
Now your tempting me to have a crack at it Brian..lol Thanks for the thought, now I can't sleep until I figure out what style of brushing I am going to do on this case..😂😂
Like someone posted in another video. The reason Vostok watches are interesting is because they March to they beat of their own drum. You won't see homages by Vostok, and their modern line of watches are original design. Speaking of modern, I would recommend checking their modern line of watches "Amfibia", they very under appreciated.
Have a black & gold version of this I like it. And I generally hate diving watches. Cushion/turtle case makes a statement. Rough finishing seems unique to me and overall it feels very robust.
Very nice dial and loved that red marker on the bezel it added some character on the overall look. And that bracelet nice finishing over there 👌. Though I am not a fan of the case shape hehe..
@@ianmarshall3633. Nice. I like the 710, 120 and the 420. I do prefer the smaller cases as well. I also have a few Komandirskie's (hand winders). Super thin. They're great as well.
@@derekshearer9049 Do you have the komandirskie GMT? My next one will be a 24 hour white dial. I don't know about you but I prefer the Amphibia and komandirskie classics. I think the newer more up to date models have lost the quirkiness that make them so appealing. You know the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" 😉
They make at least 3 different cushion cases, I think this one is bead blasted, another case is all polished, and the 3rd kind is all brushed. They're all very different cases though. These watches are so easy to take apart. If you have a little skill, you could sand, polished, and brush this case.
Widowmaker?? This watch was made for professional army divers. Does anyone think the genious inventors of the Vostok Amphibia forgot about the danger of a wrong dive time because of a turning bezel under water? Of course not. The acrylic crystal cover deforms under pressure. This presses it not only against the rubber seal but also also against the bezel itself blocking it. It is not possible to turn the bezel when diving. For timing purposes on dry land a bezel rotating in both directions is more practical. It is true that the lume is not very bright, but a good lamp is standard equipment for all serious divers, especially army divers.
This bracelet does not come with the watch unless you order it from the specified website in the video. Since most people order vostoks from meranom or ebay, don’t expect to get a solid link bracelet. The reviewers info is misleading.
I am not aware of what bracelet eBay or Meranom supply with this watch. If they supply cheaper bracelets, then that might also be reflected in their cheaper price of the watch as well. As for myself, being from Melbourne, Australia the only place I get my Vostoks is from www.lifestyleshop.com.au Cheers
I'm a little puzzled. I love Vostok watches but is this a commercial for Lifestyleshop Australia? If so, you should probably add that to the video description. I'm a little puzzled because this watch is $75 (USD) when buying directly from Vostok and Meranom and Lifestylshop is selling it for $169 with a 12 month warranty?!
I realise you can purchase this watch cheaper elsewhere, but I’m just sharing where I picked it up. If I can get my watches locally rather than source them from abroad, then I always opt for local The Meistersinger Metris I reviewed last week was another example. I could have purchased it for much less from USA but I opted to support local and purchased it from Timeonly here in Melbourne So these videos are not an advert, just sharing where I get them from Cheers
Hi Matthew, I think that's a generic picture, the watch definitely comes on this upgraded bracelet...drop David an email and confirm it with him.. Cheers
There are two versions of this case - high polish and blasted. 090659M is the basted one you have here, 090659 is shiny. Very, very, shiny. Where did the bracelet come from? There's no way that butterfly clasp came out of Christopol. Vostoks have clasps like tractor hitches (and a good, manly thing too :-)
I don’t see the attraction for Vostoks. Mind you, I actually like the media blasted finish on the case. Not something you often see on a watch. And that thick 3mm acrylic crystal is very nice too. But the rest of the design leaves me cold. It just looks like low quality tat I’m afraid 🤷♂️
@Grizzly they're trying to get out of the grey market. I'm not sure why they care, they make the same amount either way. I do really like the new Seiko Land tortoise. I think I might have to pick one up and then I'm sure I'll be disappointed that something doesn't line up properly.
@@PeterKotsa hahaha 🤣 Cheers man. Just stumbled upon your videos. Good to see another Vostok fan in Australia. Mine are all old mechanical ones from the 70s and 80s
This watch is called the Widow Maker.. So if I put it into perspective, it's as good as Jeremy Clarkson loves the Mclaren P1 - the car he called The Widow Maker -
Not sure why anyone would bother to pay double at 'the lifestyle shop' when you could buy the same model from Meranom and source the bracelet from aliexpress or ebay. I guess some people have more money than brains.
I was born and grew up in USSR (1968-1992). I enjoy an occasional "exchange" with Vostok fan-boys))) Let me say first - if you like them, more power to you, I have absolutely no problem with differences in taste and individual consumer choices. However... the poorly informed often throw around factual inaccuracies like "they were first military-issued, later released to the public" or some "pedigree" (whatever that means 🤷🏿♀️). Vostok is a Soviet consumer product. It was never "issued" to any military. If you have any proof that it was actually "issued" as part of equipment to soldiers and/or officers, for free, please provide proof. There is no proof for that false statement, because it is factually incorrect. Sometimes gullible Western "watch experts" reply to me that it was conceived and manufactured "under Government contract" 😅😂🤣 Yes. Yes it was. Just like ANY SOVIET CONSUMER PRODUCT. Vostok watch, a random woman's hat, horrible vacuum cleaner, itchy wool children's socks, horrible set of tires for a horrible Soviet car, tube of foul-tasting toothpaste, cigarettes "Ява" --- all these things were conceived and manufactured "under Government contract". There was NO PRIVATE SECTOR ECONOMY in USSR. Your taxi driver, your hairdresser, your cashier at the movies, and your Vostok factory janitor were all working for the Government. Any claims of "military-issued" or "military pedigree" found on Meranom site are BS, these claims are aimed at gullible Western ill-informed consumers. 🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
Had 3, like the looks & the fact they're cold War relics, but they're sh*te. Wildly inaccurate and fragile. I'd buy another if they sorted the accuracy and durability but 3 duds isn't a coincidence or just bad luck. Cheers 👍🏻

Excellent review
Cheers
This bracelet does not come with the watch unless you order it from the specified website in the video. Since most people order vostoks from meranom or ebay, don’t expect to get a solid link bracelet. The reviewers info is misleading.
I am not aware of what bracelet eBay or Meranom supply with this watch. If they supply cheaper bracelets, then that might also be reflected in their cheaper price of the watch as well.
As for myself, being from Melbourne, Australia the only place I get my Vostoks is from www.lifestyleshop.com.au Cheers
I made a video on the Vostok amphibian with the black dial and zulu style strap
can you get these in uk?
Vostok have been making amphian since 1967 the company stems long before then
I'm a little puzzled.
If I can get my watches locally rather than source them from abroad, then I always opt for local
The Meistersinger Metris I reviewed last week was another example. I could have purchased it for much less from USA but I opted to support local and purchased it from Timeonly here in Melbourne
So these videos are not an advert, just sharing where I get them from
Cheers
@@PeterKotsa thanks for the transparency.
You’re welcome 👍
Hi Peter. I followed the link to the website and the picture showed a standard bracelet. How do I get the upgraded bracelet? Thanks
Hi Matthew, I think that's a generic picture, the watch definitely comes on this upgraded bracelet...drop David an email and confirm it with him..
Cheers
This is very very cool !!!
There are two versions of this case - high polish and blasted. 090659M is the basted one you have here, 090659 is shiny. Very, very, shiny. Where did the bracelet come from? There's no way that butterfly clasp came out of Christopol. Vostoks have clasps like tractor hitches (and a good, manly thing too :-)
Thats how the watch came, with this bracelet and clasp..they are listed on www.lifestyleshop.com exactly this way
Can’t find one with that bracelet; did you add it?
No, it came with the watch from Lifestyleshop.com
Cheers
Vostok's corporate slogan should be "Visit Russia before Russia visits you!" :-)
So what happened to the prices? Everything seems $100 more for these? (from your AUD 150)
War..
Since the Russian conflict with Ukraine, everything has gone up.
Demand versus supply unfortunately
@@PeterKotsa Yeah I feel kind of stupid asking the question. I'm one of those always running behind. ;)
Hey David, it doesn’t just look like low quality tat...it is 😂😂
But fun, cheap and reliable too 👍😎
@@PeterKotsa yeah, I was quite impressed by that 10 year service interval on the movement...for such a cheap watch 🙂
Vostok.....The new "go to" Watch Company for a cheap, reliable and dependable Diver.....Sorry Seiko !!!!
@Grizzly they're trying to get out of the grey market. I'm not sure why they care, they make the same amount either way. I do really like the new Seiko Land tortoise. I think I might have to pick one up and then I'm sure I'll be disappointed that something doesn't line up properly.
Quick question.
Would the bezel be harder to turn the deeper you go .???so would it move under water.??.anyone.
I’ve heard it tightens the deeper you go
@@PeterKotsa thanks mate
I am about to buy an AMFIBIA watch off of your website. Not this one though.
I just bought my Vostok from your website 🤗 I look forward to receiving it soon ⏱
Disposable? Give them to me, I fix Vostok watches as a hobby.
When this stops working in about ten years, I will send it to you 😂👍👍
@@PeterKotsa hahaha 🤣
Cheers man. Just stumbled upon your videos. Good to see another Vostok fan in Australia. Mine are all old mechanical ones from the 70s and 80s
@@whatsstefon Brilliant...!!
This watch is called the Widow Maker..
So if I put it into perspective, it's as good as Jeremy Clarkson loves the Mclaren P1 - the car he called The Widow Maker -
😂
Not sure why anyone would bother to pay double at 'the lifestyle shop' when you could buy the same model from Meranom and source the bracelet from aliexpress or ebay. I guess some people have more money than brains.
That's a lot of money for a $75.00 watch that's out of stock on Meranom. 😂
Was thinking the same....
Here it costs around 70$. Still a shitty watch, if you ask me. This bracelet is not supplied but an after-market one
You are an addict Peter lol, what is it about watches????
I know, I need to see someone about this addition
I was born and grew up in USSR (1968-1992).
I enjoy an occasional "exchange" with Vostok fan-boys)))
Let me say first - if you like them, more power to you, I have absolutely no problem with differences in taste and individual consumer choices.
However... the poorly informed often throw around factual inaccuracies like "they were first military-issued, later released to the public" or some "pedigree" (whatever that means 🤷🏿♀️).
Thanks for shedding light on the topic. I was only going from information I heard second hand
I’m glad someone knows what he’s talking about 😂😉
Had 3, like the looks & the fact they're cold War relics, but they're sh*te. Wildly inaccurate and fragile. I'd buy another if they sorted the accuracy and durability but 3 duds isn't a coincidence or just bad luck.
Cheers 👍🏻
