    I'm an old guy I've seen every Western ever made. Quigley is in my top five favorite westerns of all time! Ask anyone who loves westerns this is one of their favorites. Look up Cowboy in the dictionary you'll see Tom Selleck's picture. Alan Rickman made this right after Die Hard. It doesn't get any better than him as a movie villain. The rifle in this movie has become so famous there has become a yearly shooting contest with it. Buying the rifle takes a year to get to receive it. They are custom-made and in high demand. There is a western miniseries from the 70s call "The Sacketts" based on a famous book. It stars Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck as Cowboy Brothers. It's a classic and it is what made Tom and Sam famous. Does not get any better then Tom and Sam as Cowboys. It is for free on UA-cam. I highly recommend it if you like Tom and Sam and Cowboys. I love your reactions as always stay real.

      And Louis L'Amour was a great western novelist.

    • @Falcun21
      @Falcun21 2 місяці тому +8

      The Sacketts movie was based on two different novels, the first is The Daybreakers about two of the five Sackett brothers, William Tell, Orrin, Tyrel, Joe and Bob. Tyrel and Orrin (Tom's character) leave Tennessee after Orrin's brand new bride is killed by the last member of a family the Sacketts were feuding with and Tyrel kills that man. The second novel is Sackett which tells the story of William Tell "Tell" Sackett (Sam's character.)
      Another book that starred Tom and Sam was The Shadow Riders, another Louis' L'Amour novel about the Traven Brothers from Texas, Dal (Sam), Mac(Tom) and Jessie. Dal fought for the Confederacy and Mac fought for the Union and they come together with their younger brother Jessie to rescue their two sisters that were kidnapped and being taken to Mexico.

    Thank you, ladies, for watching this film. I loved your reactions even to point of Tori sometimes calling out the call backs. This was my dad's favorite movie and brought back memories of watching it with my father. Yes, it was hard to watch, but Matthew as American saw how Indians here were treated and then going over and seeing he was hired to do the same to the aborigines was a no go for him. It showed Quigley was gentleman to. Even though Cora was out of her mind. He still remained respectful and concerned for her wellbeing. You first see this when they bring women to ranch for entertainment purpose..he told leader that there was mix up and leave Cora alone. I loved Cora too..but once you hear her story you really understand her and it is not quite as funny anymore. But my favorite part is when Quigley says, "I said I never had a use for one, never said I didn't know how to use one." Exactly never assume something about someone's skill set.

    Long distance shooting like this requires a strong knowledge math, specifically trigonometry(the study of angles and angular relationships).
    You have to factor in things like the rate the bullet will drop after leaving the muzzle of the rifle, the difference in elevation between where the shooter is and where the target is,.the speed and direction of the wind(which will allow you to estimate winds effect) and at extreme distances shots that are 1000 yards or more you even have to take into account Corlios effect which is you have factor in the slight deviation caused by the rotation speed of the earth.
    Snipers are actually mathematicians

      You don't need to know math and trigonometry. People were shooting like this in the West, factoring in their experience alone. It is just later on (in history) that it helps to know such things (like if you are a sniper).

    FUN FACT: the young red headed ginger kid who worked for Alan Rickman in the movie is an Australian actor named Ben Mendelsohn. You might recognize him as the main villain, Director Krennic, in the Star Wars film Rogue One. He’s also in several other movies including Captain Marvel and The Dark Knight Rises. Quigley Down Under was one of his early film roles and he’s gone on to have a fantastic career as a dramatic actor in some lesser known movies and shows on top of the ones I mentioned above. Tom Selleck made a series of movies based on Robert B. Parker's "Jesse Stone" novels. Selleck stars as Jesse Stone an L.A. police detective from Santa Monica. He & his dog "Boomer" leave L.A. to take a job as the Chief of Police in a small coastal town in Mass. The 1st movie released, "Jesse Stone: Stone Cold" (2005) is actually the 2nd movie in chronological order. The 1st movie to watch in the proper order is "Jesse Stone: Night Passage" (2006). Jesse Stone is definitely a flawed character; divorced, drinking problem, etc. but underneath a good guy. Tom Selleck also produced these movies. Not a bad one in the bunch. If you like Tom Selleck you will love these movies.

    Tom Selleck's rifle is a Sharps metallic cartridge breech loader. Sharps rifles date back to before the Civil War. Originally they handled a .52 - .54 caliber paper cartridge that required a separate cap to fire. After the Civil War brass cased bullets took over and certain rifles like the Sharps became very popular, especially after winning some of the Creedmore matches. I actually have a pre-Civil War Sharps carbine that was used by the Union Cavalry. I've shot it a few times and can attest to its accuracy even if it is a carbine.

    Although the company does use some modern equipment that wasn't available in the 1800's (for doing things like getting the metal at the perfect temperature before pouring it into a mold), they are still hand-made, and each modern piece is interchangeable with 1800's rifles.

    I was going to say "The best Australian western," but then I remembered that I used to love the Australian TV series "Rush" which aired on American PBS. It was set during the Australian gold rush in the 1850s, and with its frontier and interaction with indigenous people themes, it had a very western vibe.

    Theres about 50 truly great, all encompassing, huge scenes, music, story soundtrack characters, etc., and this is one of those movies! Tom selleck...3 men and a baby, a futuristic 80s movie where he's a cop...Runaway, he did a bunch of TV movies about a character named Jesse Stone, a semi regular character on Friends, movies In and Out, Ruby Jean and Joe, Mr Baseball, An Innocent man, her alibi, Lassiter, high road to china.

    Loved your reaction to this; Alan Rickman nearly stole the film as he so often seems to do. Honestly didn't think I'd ever see anyone react to this one. One of only two movies I like that Tom Selleck is in; other one being a Sci-fi one called Runaway, from 1984, and the only project I've ever seen Laura San Giacomo in. I adore this film; more fable and fairy tale than western; part of a run of films trying to revive the western by taking it out of the fabled American West, but the only one that truly came up with something original I felt, kerk

    For a wonderful western with Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan, you need to watch Shanghai Noon and the sequel, Shanghai Knights. These movies are a lot more light-hearted. - Thomas
