Capturing Dimebag's Vulgar Tone - EVH 5150iii 50w & Torpedo Captor X

  • So much to talk about with this album and Pantera in general. Such a unique and original band. The 5150 really does a great job as the foundation for this tone and it was really cool that I could practice and use the 1936v Marshall cab for a change without wrecking my ears. The Two Notes Torpedo Captor X is a really smart device that's too good. It did an exceptional job artificially matching my 2x12 Marshall Cab for this. It truly sounded the same as how I hear it in the room.

I had one of the Ivory EVH 5150-3's like you have in this video with matching cab..it was a very "Dry" amp and you nailed it using yours here to get Dimes tone..I ran my KFK MXR 10 band in the loop and it sounded amazing ! I bought the 50 watt EVH Stealth and it does it all,I really don't even run any effects with it,its much less dry and is just amazing !
Try a Tungsol 12ax7 in V1 and the Chinese 12ax7B in V2..it wakes both these amps up !

I tried replicating this setup on my rig which is a Mesa MK5:25 running as a pre-amp into an Axe FX Ultra via 4CM, and out to a Mesa 50/50 poweramp. Used the GEQ and ParametricEQ in the Axe Fx, some of the slider values are not exact compared to the MXR, and I had to do a bit of guesswork with the PEQ as to where I thought it would match the Sine Effects. Final tone is amazing. Doesn't actually sound quite like a Dimebag sound, but it made the Mk5 sound even better, took out a bit of high end fizz and tightened the low end up more as well.

Love these videos, would be cool to have an "outtakes" video dropped a couple days later of you just playing through a few songs from the album you're replicating. I know it's more work, but I'd have loved to hear Hollow played out in full. Cheers! 🤘

I’d like that mate but really don’t have time. I pretty much start work on the next video and learning riffs etc

You have a great ear. Parrot seems to really enjoy the playing too
