This video is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a local mental health professional. You look over at your daughter and she is pulling her hair out one by one. Your son picks his scabs until they bleed. How are you supposed to stop a child who pulls hair or picks skin? You can’t be with them twenty-four hours a day. You’ve tried every approach, and nothing is working. Join the club. Hair pulling (Trichotillomania) and skin picking (Excoriation Disorder) are two very difficult Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) that are hard to stop.
As a skin picker myself, and the parent of a skin picker and a hair puller - I know first hand that the key to success is empowering and motivating the person with the issue. This is true for all our children’s struggles, but especially with this problem. So how do you motivate your kids to help themselves? It can be tough. To help you with your effort, I made this video for kids and teens to watch on my Kids UA-cam Channel. If you want parenting tips on this issue - check out this podcast episode where I interviewed Aneela from Habitaware.com. Thank you so much for this video! Can't wait to show my daughter! I love how you empower kids to rely on their own capabilities to deal with these different issues. It is so much more effective and productive for them to know they are in charge of their bodies and the outcome. My child is so head strong which is a great quality when applied in a positive way through having her responsible to work on her issues and not me trying to control things. It gives parents room to let go of the battle of the wills and just concentrate on being there as a positive support. This approach provides respect, dignity, and acceptance which are all healing and promote encouragement and growth.

I hope your daughter finds it helpful ❤️. I do feel like when we empower our kids to address their own issues we give them tools for life.

Thank you. I have trich and derm. Unfortunately, my 3 y.o. has started exhibiting derm behaviors. I'm trying to figure out the best ways to help him

Thank you....SERIOUSLY! I have a 2yo that pulls her hair and eats it (mainly at bedtime). Not sure if it's just a sensory thing or or trichotillomania, but whatever the case, thanks for the tips. I think we'll give the chew bracelets a try & hopefully that helps. Glad I came across this vid. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your advice. How do we motivate our children to stop harmful behavior?

That can be difficult. They really have to want to stop this type of behavior otherwise it will be an uphill battle. Sometimes appearance issues are motivating, other times health issues. It will be different for each child.

I think that if you scared you pick or pull to stall.

I use Saniderm clear adhesive bandages to block the picking and heal the damage when my OCD is flaring up. Combined with a fidget it has made a big difference.
