Turn Your Safety Razor Into a Straight Razor!

  • Geo does some serious beard removal with a Merkur 23C Safety Razor. The twist lies in the fact that the shave is performed without the Top Cap, so shaving with only the Bar or Baseplate. What DE blade would make this even more challenging? Feather of course! This causes the razor to shave like a straight razor-makes the razor super aggressive so this is not for beginners or novices, but should only be attempted by seasoned shaving veterans. TOBS OUD Shaving Cream is lathered up in the Shave Nation Smooth Indestructibowl with the Simpsons Trafalgar T2 synthetic shaving brush. Post shave features the Shave Nation Wide-Stick Alum Block and Proraso Aftershave Balm. The result is a Super baby smooth shave!

Of course I had to try this. I'm a two-year wet shaving veteran after decades of electric razors. I routinely use an R89 or R41 with a Feather or Astra blade. Surprisingly, shaving without a safety bar wasn't that difficult to learn. I use this technique for my third pass; against the grain on my cheeks. Wow! What a close shave it gives. It does require good, deliberate, smooth technique but so far, after about a half dozen trials, there's been no blood. Just this morning, my wife rubbed her face against mine and said, "That's a kitty smooth shave." Her exact words. So yeah, the technique is worth mastering.

Nice work Geo. I've been shaving like this for a while using a 15C, which is an idea I got from an older video of yours. I only do WTG and a little XTG without the bar, then I reattach the bar for the final ATG. Keep up the great work. You have a loyal and dedicated fan base for a good reason.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about it. But after only a few swipes I was completely comfortable with it. It wasn't euphoric. Lol!

My dad shaved almost his whole life that way, his weapon was an old Gillette Tech which he lost the safety bar when he was younger. His blades of choice were the BIC blades. I also tried once to shave like that and succeeded, but the shave is much more comfortable with the safety bar. Without the safety bar you learn the meaning of no pressure faster 😂

Your shaving hair off at the base where it meets the skin, so I think it feels the same no matter what. As long as you're using a sharp blade.

Geo, why does col conk shave soap dissapate quickly? I have the right amount of water but soon as I lather my head 15 seconds it's already dissipating! I use shave oil first then apply lather over. I'm mixing in a bowl too! Help me out here bro!!! 🙏

Gotta admit...takes a lot of steel nerve to shave like that! The facial hair makes you look older, that's why young men grow a beard or goatee, so they look older and will be taken more seriously. I am too much of a coward to try that technique, however, I use the Fatip Grande Open Comb and get pretty much the same results. Great demo, thanks for the ideo!
