Very possible... I've just started with a de razor , inherited my dad's razor , probably 40 year old and still in beautiful condition . Tried it ... after watching the video here on how to , bought new blades , creme and brush ... wow ! As men with our busy and hectic lives , we should absolutely enjoy staying well groomed ! Our wives spend plenty of time at hair dressers , nail salons etc..
Every point you made was very valid. I've bought and used an open comb razor that held the blade at a very aggressive angle, no surprises that I don't use that particular razor anymore. After much trial and error I settled on using a combination razor where one side is open comb while the other side is closed, just because it suits how I live. You see sometimes I forget to shave for a week and when I finally get around to it the open comb does a great job of cutting away the long growth without the problem of a razor jammed up with hair, and with a final pass after re-lathering from the closed comb side the finished shave is excellent and smooth without any bloodshed.
THANKS BRIAN!!! After watching your tutorial on shaving with a safety razor i bought a full shaving kit with MÜHLE R106. I am happy with the results and even the shaving itself became fun and exciting! Been using cartridge razors all my life and never tried a safety razor. Got tired of cuts, redness and the price i pay for it. Joining the safety razor club :)
Your pocket will thank you for changing over too each blade does 5 shaves sometimes six I got a box of 100 wilkinsonsword blades for €19.95 back in June and had about fifteen blades already and still havent started on my 100 pack.
Well done. Thanks for the honesty, it's appreciated when social media today is saturated with monetized incentives... In my experience, an open comb is useful for a week's stubble head shave, if it offers more gap. Naturally, with more stubble, I would use a thick lather which is easier to whisk with an open comb. Generally, with more gap and open teeth, it becomes an easier shave with fewer passes. In comparison with all other things being equal, a closed comb would either take a little more time rinsing off build-up, or an extra pass is needed. For regular shaves, I am like you, a closed comb like the R89 is perfect.
Have to agree with you Brian. The laws of physics say that you would get a more comfortable shave with a closed comb DE due to the glide being more continuous opposed to the open comb where you will have gaps. That’s the only difference, and/or benefit I can see between both types.
I have both. You're right in that the design of the razor determines how close of a shave it can be. The blade also contributes. In my experience, open comb is great to shave off lots of hair at one time. It keeps the entire razor from building up which can be so annoying on a closed comb that sometimes you might have to take apart the razor mid shave to wipe collected cream/soap and hair stuck on the blade in between the razor. With open comb it's easier to rinse it off although it still depends on the amount of hair. Closed comb does make it easier for a closer shave because with more of the comb on the face, more of the skin is being pulled evenly allowing for a closer shave more evenly over more of the face at a time. Anyway, thanks for sharing, take care!
Close comb is for a small stubble but open comb is for heavy beard growth. Open comb will feel a little too aggressive when you have a small stuble and still use it.
I had this dilemma myself a week ago, got an R89 and an R41 open comb head (just the head) so I could try both and decide for myself, will update this comment once I shave with both. Thanks a lot for sharing your opinion Brian, for it is valued.
@@viennakrakatoaleipzignumbers you know what, I completely forgot about this comment but you reminded me so although a bit late here are my findings: R41 vs R89 wouldn't be too different and it's just marketing gimmicks I thought when purchasing the extra head but I still did. After shaving with R89 once I thought it was pretty good but wasn't too easy to shave with, it just didn't cut very well at times I felt, you'd have to go over the same spots multiple times at times and you'd have to actually use some force cause it's so opposite of agressive (i guess). But still it was decent. After my first time using R89 I shaved with the R41 next and boy it was day and night difference. R41 is so sharp it feels like, i don't know if it's the difference in angle (if there is such a thing) or the open comb... it just cut everything pretty much perfectly BUT you have to have a very good control with it to not cut yourself or irritate your skin because as I mentioned it's crazy aggressive. I didn't cut myself but I irritated around the part under my chin because I went over it multiple times with lots of force so I kind of damaged the skin a bit on my first go. So all in all I'd suggest you get R41 and be extremely careful and once you get the hang of it (which I'm sure you will after a couple of uses) you'll be glad you got that one instead of R89. I used a safety for a short period many years ago, in my 20's and although I liked the closeness, I was just using regular bar soap and not prepping my face, so it was never really a comfortable shave. I just went back to a closed comb safety, and I was amazed at what proper skin prep can do. At first, I didn't think the blade was even touching my skin, and I was tempted to press down, because it felt like just the bar against my skin. Wow, was I wrong! Sooo smooth! Just need to get a little more technique right around the bottom of the neckline, but it was a great, easy shave and surprisingly, didn't cut myself once. And all I was using was a Van Der Hagen right off the drug store shelf with the blades it came with.
After about 17 years of shaving with an open blade, I bought two Chinese closed comb " butterfly " razors and use Gillette 7 O' clock de blades. This combination gives a consistent 60 to 65 shaves per blade. In Fiji, the razors cost $ 6 and the blades cost 12 cents. I do not have a beard and shave my whole face. I use ordinary toilet soap as lather, first washing my face to remove any dirt. The safety razor is quick and safe. Shaving has become an adventure which I enjoy each day. Best wishes.
I love the R41. Not long upgraded to it after two years with the Feather Popular and a few other medium aggressive razors. I thought I was going to tear chunks out of my face but I haven't cut myself at all with it. I get weepers if I do three passes but the alum block cleans them up.

Hello, I am very new to safety razors and am eagerly awaiting my order from yourselves of soap, brush and stand. Unfortunately I didn't know of you when I bought my razor, but I would like to ask you a question. What do you think of adjustable razors for a beginner ?? Are they too much faff ?? Should I just buy a closed comb say for example and get used to the simple mechanics of shaving without the variability?? I am a subscriber to you and your website. The content is thorough, trust worthy and not long winded like some of the American sites ! Thank you in advance, Tomorrow will be my first ever safety razor shave........and I'm 53 !!:-)
Hi Paul, thanks for watching and for your business! Adjustable razors are fine and can be good for beginners but we'd recommend starting on the lowest setting of whatever razor you choose. However, really think you can't go wrong with a closed comb such as the MÜHLE R89 or the Merkur 34C. You can view our top recommendations for beginners here: www.executive-shaving.co.uk/for-beginners/razors-for-beginners/best-safety-razors-for-beginners
I agree with you 100 percent. I have an old 1930s open comb razor and it doesn’t shave the same as with a closed comb. I prefer the feel of a closed comb
Hi, Great video ino because you just say the practicality of how it is without the hype which seems to be hard to find. I do get the less-clogging probability for open comb razors, but overall I'm a closed comb guy. Having said that, I was so p**sed off at Gillette's man-hating commercial that (encouraged by others) I've spent just over the last two years designing a new adjustable and replaceable blade SE razor to be made in the UK. After many prototypes it's just been completed this last month and will soon be launched on a crowdfunding site. It's awesome, not for everyone as there are so many personal likes and dislikes, but I won't ever have to buy another razor again, lol. PS: I came to watch the video because someone asked me to make an open comb accessory for mine and I just wanted to make sure what I thought about open comb's was factual. I'll do it, but the only reason is for the quickness on longer hair relative to clogging issues.
@@ExecutiveShaving Hi Brian, thank you and great reply because you clearly understand (rare) what I've been through and still have yet to do :) Subscribed to this channel, all the best :)
They both shave BUT the OC is more aggressive and you can achieve a faster BBS shave. I use the Muhle R1 and also love the Fatip OC head too. I started with a DE89 CC but for me the OC is better. But I agree with your argument, I had a Merkur OC and had to sell it as it was so mild it sucked! What would the R41 be classed as? There is no comb only a blunt rake! I’ll bought a Fatip slant yesterday and can’t wait to try it. In 2021 I think I’ll buy a Muhle Rocca stainless.
Hi Sebastian - thanks for watching. Out of the two razors you mentioned the Merkur 25C is the more aggressive razor. This is an open comb head so there is more blade exposure. Open comb razors are ideal for those with coarser stubble.
Hi, Brian. I've been using a cartridge razor for decades, now thinking about a safety razor. Since it's a doubled edged razor, I'm thinking: why not open comb on one side and closed on the other?
@@UntakenNick I use both sides in the same shave. A lot of other people do as well. I do this in order to save time, by reducing unclogging time. I shave with one side, it gets clogged by latter. I switch sides and continue. When the second side gets clogged as well I put the razor under the water to unclog it.
Open comb, I can feel the angle better and never cut my legs or bikini line. Closed comb, idk.. they work. I just have less confidence in areas I can't see well.
I have a game changer 84p plate base plate and an open comb 84p plate. I only use the open comb for very long hair or head shaves. I don't like going against the growth with open comb. Standard bar for me is more enjoyable and gives better audio feedback but for very long hair it will get clogged up, open comb never clogs because it the hair goes on the outside of it. Open comb feels smoother to me and requires less passes.
I agree with the feel of oc vs cc. It would seem to me that only about 1/2 of the blade is being used on an open comb. And when you throw the blade out, if you looked at it with eye loop you would see that. I just don't get the concept as being logical with an open. Used one this morning and got a nice 3 pass shave. I have had better. The feel along makes me agree that closed is the comfortable one and had given me the best shaves ever.
@@ExecutiveShaving hope you have the time for a recommendation. I bought a r89 grande recently to try out safety razors. I must say i like it. I bought it with the intention of passing it on to my son (17) if it would please me to start a more economic way of shaving for us both. What is the best safety razor in your opinion? Would like a longer handle like the r89 grande. Maybe stainless? Also would like a thin head to be able to shave under the nose easier.
@@cmkooi75 The long handle Timor may be what you need: www.executive-shaving.co.uk/timor-german-made-long-handle-closed-comb-safety-razor The handle is stainless steel while the head delivers a similar mild yet effective shave as the R89. The Timor will be back in stock this week hopefully. Brian
I use the: Muhle R41 Open comb: long hairs (week old) Muhle R89 Closed Comb: Short hairs or Second pass against the grain. Im not a verry skilled shaver but I noticed that the R41 simply does much beter against long hairs, maybe there exist closed comb safety razors that can shave long hairs just as easily ?

How's it's going everybody ! With all due respect, I think that the safety razor open comb is more efficient since shaving is closer to the root with fewer strokes and this contributes to the BBS, a close comb for me is like a cat's tongue on my face, I don't even perceive it, I feel like it's definitely not for me.
Thanks for getting in touch. Did you also email us? If so, we did reply but the email address provided is wrong. The Parker 74R is recommended so too is the Feather DER-A. The Feather are more robust while the Feather is adjustable. See here: www.executive-shaving.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=butterfly Get back to me please if you have any questions. Brian
I know closed comb razors that deliver close shaves and I know of open comb razors that deliver mild shaves. The important factors are blade gap and the angle the blade comes out of the head. Thanks for watching. Brian.
Much of a muchness as far as shaving is concerned but the opencomb may be slightly more accurate around the sideburns, my two favourite razors are my old dad's 1950's gilette closedcomb and my 1918 gilette opencomb I like the opencomb slightly better because it gives more blade feel but as far as shaving is concerned their dead even and give the smoothest shave of all my razors.
Open comb would allow a more efficient flow of lather and bristles through the head of the razor but any benefit is likely to be minimal. Thanks for watching! Brian
@@ExecutiveShaving awewome videos and im just sitting and waiting for the natural shaving cream to be restocked and ready for my purchase! So thanks to you guys! Ok, but if i got like a centimeter of beard and want to shave it, is a closed comb more likely to clog than an open?
Closed comb is for me definitely I don't have thick facial hair and it's much safer compared to opened comb I just reapply shaving cream if I need to go back to shave that same spot

@@ExecutiveShaving no sorry maybe i explained it wrong. im looking for a safety razor with no comb, no guard, no nothing.. just the top piece then the razor then the handle. kinda like a shavette but in safety razor style.
Thanks for the video, Brian. BTW, you looks even more slim & fit than before, are you change your diet to vegan? Or spend more time on running or other exercises?
very nice video and always an interesting topic. and then, you also have the double open comb razors which act completely different in my experience. they can be very very mild, or quite efficient. i do find those pretty good at buffing because of the ‘lather channels’. So shorter strokes work really well with those for me. But I agree on the more scratchy feeling, depending on what razor ofcourse. When I haven’t shaved for some days I tend to go for a DOC or open comb. But ofcourse a closed comb will do fine too. The great thing about having so much choice: everyone can pick what they like and nothing is wrong as long as it works for you! :)
sir meri skin sensitive hai muje daily shaving krna pasand hai aur me roz against the grain karta hu but question ye hai ki OPEN COMB buy karu ya CLOSE COMB please reply?
At this point I cannot stand open comb razors. My favorite razors are closed comb (SB safety Bar) slant razors like the Merkur 37c and the Ikon x3 slant. Probably my two favorite razors so far.
"when you shave down, for example, and look in the mirror you'll see lines of lather on the face where the blade seems to have missed cutting bristles" If this is the case you are either not using it correctly (i.e. your angle is way off) or you haven't actually used an OC razor. The blade is still a flat edge. I don't understand how you could be making blade contact and leaving lines of shaving cream or uncut hair behind.
You may be right, maybe my technique is not good, nonetheless - my preference is for closed comb and sales for closed comb razors are around 98% for closed comb. Thanks for watching. Brian
Just too many different styles of razors being made, they come in all different aggressiveness regardless of closed or open comb. Just like Brian said, closed could be aggressive and open comb could be mild. I had Blackland Dart razor and it was aggressive for me so sold it, I also have Geo F Trumpers open comb travel razor and it's medium, definitely not aggressive.
У меня комбинированный timeless 0.68, одна сторона OC вторая SB. На шее грубый волос растёт вверх. Сколько бы я проходов ни делал SB стороной, чисто побриться не получается, однако OC сторона без проблем всё сбривает. We're pleased to hear you've found that the Mühle R41 works well for you!
@@ExecutiveShaving Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I will continue to learn thanks to people like yourselves. I shall watch this tomorrow !!
Have an tgs italico open comb and a muhle r89 closed comb and you can definitely tell the difference. Love them both.
I agree with you 100 percent. I have an old 1930s open comb razor and it doesn’t shave the same as with a closed comb. I prefer the feel of a closed comb
Yes an open comb razor has never quite done it for me. Thanks for watching Roger!
Having been involved in lots of product development and launch projects, I know how difficult that is, good luck!
Thanks for watching.

@@ExecutiveShaving Hi Brian, thank you and great reply because you clearly understand (rare) what I've been through and still have yet to do :) Subscribed to this channel, all the best :)

Top 5 most aggressive safety razor in the world 2021
We can only comment on razors we have experience of and none are as aggressive/close shaving as the Muhle R41 series.
Thanks for watching.
Brian
They both shave BUT the OC is more aggressive and you can achieve a faster BBS shave.
I use the Muhle R1 and also love the Fatip OC head too. I started with a DE89 CC but for me the OC is better. But I agree with your argument, I had a Merkur OC and had to sell it as it was so mild it sucked! What would the R41 be classed as? There is no comb only a blunt rake! I’ll bought a Fatip slant yesterday and can’t wait to try it. In 2021 I think I’ll buy a Muhle Rocca stainless.
Hello. Congratulations on your video. Which of the razors is more aggressive and shaves closer for a hard and rough beard muhle r89 or mercury 25 c
There was one like that a few years ago - was it an iKon razor?
Thanks for watching.
Brian
Seems like that should be the default design, I don't think a lot of people use both sides at the same time so they need them to be equal.
@@UntakenNick I use both sides in the same shave. A lot of other people do as well. I do this in order to save time, by reducing unclogging time. I shave with one side, it gets clogged by latter. I switch sides and continue. When the second side gets clogged as well I put the razor under the water to unclog it.
Great, straight forward, succinct review. Thank you
Thanks for watching Ron.

@@ExecutiveShaving 👍
Open comb, I can feel the angle better and never cut my legs or bikini line.
Closed comb, idk.. they work. I just have less confidence in areas I can't see well.
If that works for you - keep at it.
Thanks for watching.
Brian
Very interesting, thanks...was actually wondering about the difference.
Glad to be of help. Thanks for watching.
Brian
I have a game changer 84p plate base plate and an open comb 84p plate. I only use the open comb for very long hair or head shaves. I don't like going against the growth with open comb. Standard bar for me is more enjoyable and gives better audio feedback but for very long hair it will get clogged up, open comb never clogs because it the hair goes on the outside of it. Open comb feels smoother to me and requires less passes.
Thanks for your contribution, what you say makes sense.
Brian
These razors are awesome in billions of ways
Great explanation , thank you
Thanks for your kind words Olito and thanks for watching.
Brian
Yep. I had an iKon SBS and the open comb side was milder than the safety bar side.
Thanks for your comment.
Brian
I agree with the feel of oc vs cc. It would seem to me that only about 1/2 of the blade is being used on an open comb. And when you throw the blade out, if you looked at it with eye loop you would see that. I just don't get the concept as being logical with an open. Used one this morning and got a nice 3 pass shave. I have had better. The feel along makes me agree that closed is the comfortable one and had given me the best shaves ever.
It's the scratchy feeling I get from open comb razors that puts me off.
Thanks for your feedback.
Brian
I'm going with Brian's recommendation. Great videos sir!
Thanks John.

@@cmkooi75 The long handle Timor may be what you need:
www.executive-shaving.co.uk/timor-german-made-long-handle-closed-comb-safety-razor
The handle is stainless steel while the head delivers a similar mild yet effective shave as the R89.
The Timor will be back in stock this week hopefully.

I use the:
Muhle R41 Open comb: long hairs (week old)
Muhle R89 Closed Comb: Short hairs or Second pass against the grain.
Im not a verry skilled shaver but I noticed that the R41 simply does much beter against long hairs, maybe there exist closed comb safety razors that can shave long hairs just as easily ?
No clogging with The Outlaw due to the large drain slots on the base plate:

No worries - thanks for watching!
Another great explanation - thank you. I was thinking of trying an Open Comb razor but on your advice I'll stick with my Closed Comb :-)
Some guys swear by them but not for me.

Brian
How's it's going everybody !
With all due respect, I think that the safety razor open comb is more efficient since shaving is closer to the root with fewer strokes and this contributes to the BBS, a close comb for me is like a cat's tongue on my face, I don't even perceive it, I feel like it's definitely not for me.
agreed i also find that it helps me find the right angle
If what you do works for you - don't stop doing it, each to their own.
Thanks for watching.
Brian
That makes sense that the open comb razor would actually scratch your skin and leave spots of lather I just have all closed comb razors.
Thanks for this Brian. We're learning a lot! :)
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Open-combed always ripped my face off, no matter how gentle I was. 😱
I never had a problem with cuts from an open comb razor, I just didn't like the scratchy feeling on my face.

Good information, clearly presented, per usual.
High Quality video. Well done, Excellent 10/10!
Much appreciated. Thank you for watching!
I shall always choose Open comb over closed one. Open comb will give you close shave.
Definately getting a closed comb, but im wondering if open comb would be better when shaving off longer beardgrowth, could that be so?
Open comb would allow a more efficient flow of lather and bristles through the head of the razor but any benefit is likely to be minimal.
Thanks for watching!
Brian
@@ExecutiveShaving awewome videos and im just sitting and waiting for the natural shaving cream to be restocked and ready for my purchase! So thanks to you guys!
Ok, but if i got like a centimeter of beard and want to shave it, is a closed comb more likely to clog than an open?
@@dennisjohansson5716 Yes.
@@ExecutiveShaving ok cool! But i could probably shave it off with a closed one too, right? Just a bit of more swiwle in the ol sink there?
You could just take the comb off and shave without it for long hair lol
From my experience OCs line up the hair, if you haven't shaved for more than 3 days I prefer an OC, less then 3 days I prefer CC.
Good point Lars, thanks for watching.

I use a duel comb lupo ss one side open 72 blade gap one side closed 95 blade gap best of both worlds

very nice video and always an interesting topic. and then, you also have the double open comb razors which act completely different in my experience. they can be very very mild, or quite efficient. i do find those pretty good at buffing because of the ‘lather channels’.
Sorry, we're not sure what you're trying to ask.
Open comb buy karo
Open comb for long beards easier to get in there I belive
I have heard that cream mixed with stubble is less likely to get stuck in an open comb. Is that at all true?
Most people I've talked to say it doesn't really make a difference, and I don't notice a difference either.
Super explanation
Thanks for watching!
Can someone recommend which comb to use if I want a stubble? I don't look good with close comb and I look much better with a 1 week stubble?
You will have to go to the dark side for a stubble razor, wet shaving shaves the bristle at skin level.
Brian
At this point I cannot stand open comb razors. My favorite razors are closed comb (SB safety Bar) slant razors like the Merkur 37c and the Ikon x3 slant. Probably my two favorite razors so far.
Thanks for watching - open comb razors are for people who really know what they're doing and have a tough beard. Good choice of razors!
Great! Thank you!
Thank you
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Brian
"when you shave down, for example, and look in the mirror you'll see lines of lather on the face where the blade seems to have missed cutting bristles"
If this is the case you are either not using it correctly (i.e. your angle is way off) or you haven't actually used an OC razor.
Brian
Closed comb the best option

Just too many different styles of razors being made, they come in all different aggressiveness regardless of closed or open comb. Just like Brian said, closed could be aggressive and open comb could be mild. I had Blackland Dart razor and it was aggressive for me so sold it, I also have Geo F Trumpers open comb travel razor and it's medium, definitely not aggressive.
Good points Mohammed.
