Hey guys! If you're interested in getting into wet shaving, I did an updated review on the Van Der Hagen Traditional Shave Set for 2019. It's inexpensive and pretty darn good! Go check it out! --> ua-cam.com/video/tlM_kNPlPs0/v-deo.html
You can sharpen/strop cartridge razors using a leather strop, denim or just by using your forearm. There are people re-using their cartridge razors for over a year. You could use the same technique on safety razors as well although the savings wouldn't be anywhere near as much since safety blades are much cheaper. ua-cam.com/video/5ADaRIqy0Dc/v-deo.html
I was given one from my mom for Christmas when I was 16 back in the 70's. Along with some old spice. (Still have that bottle with some of it in it still!) Had no instructions, no one to teach or guide me. I used that same razor all of my life. I do miss it now but its in good hands. My son turned down my offer to buy him a top of the line electric. He wanted mine! Now he's in the navy and it is his!
@Mike Dunning Nope. Get a mild Gillette Tech razor and use small strokes. Takes a week or two to get the technique and angle down. I do full three-pass shaves in ten minutes, bbs each shave. Way better than carts.
@Mike Dunning does happen if you are unfamiliar with it. So for me that means a couple times in the first 2 weeks. But when you know how to do it, the chance of cutting yourself is really low. Also if it cuts you, the pain is so minor you barely feel anything. Those cartridge razors I used to use tug like hell, everytime shaving is a torture, even if it leaves no blood at all. So I don’t care if I lose 5 drops of blood a year with a safety razor.
IT can be cheap, but then it becomes a hobby and you'll have what we call a shave den with 8 brushes, 7 DE razors, and a crap load of soap.....beware. I would never go back to cartridges though.
You forgot to mention the 17 brands of blades that you bought by the 100 pack because it is so much cheaper per blade that way. At least 11 of the 17 give a good shave though. Only 7 DE razors. You must just be getting started.
I started shaving at 17 with my father's 2 sided razor. LOVED IT. Then my grandfather gave me his razor and he recently passed away. So I have it as his memory
Buying a safety razor was the best decision I made. I went with one that isn't as aggressive in shaving and I no longer get red bumps as I would with the "close shave" razors.
What brand? I moved to a DE due to shaving TOO close and getting ingrown hairs every week. Just shredded my face on every bump with a HARRY'S from Wal Mart.
I made the switch from the 5 blade cartridge razor (Harry’s) to a safety razor. I’m able to get a closer shave with that razor compared to Harry’s that I used for 3 years. Also buying more blades for that razor is a lot cheaper too. With Harry’s no matter how many passes I went through wasn’t able to get the hair off near my Adam’s apple. With the safety razor, I was finally able to get the hair off completely shaved with a couple passes. I’m glad I made the switch.
Yep!! Ordered me one about 8 months ago with 100 blades on Amazon. I too learned the hard way. Yes! It will cut the shit out of you. I don't recommend shaving in the shower with it. You definitely want to use the mirror. I love mine!! Thanks for sharing.
I switched over to safety razors about 9 years ago. Now I have a collection of razors, brushes, creams and soaps. It’s actually a nice change from the drudgery of cartridge razors and canned goop.
Bravo, everyone needs to do this. I wised up and stopped being ripped off by multibladed razor scam a few years back. After I found the blade that worked for me, it was all good!
I just made the switch. I am watching all the tutorials I can tonight, and I'm gonna try it out tomorrow morning. I've been a member of Dollar Shave Club forever. I have a good feeling that I will be cancelling that.
I just shaved with on of these for the very first time yesterday and today...I'm 52. You describe it perfectly...it takes a light touch, you have to take your time, but if you can do that it's a great shave and it's just very cool.
I still have and use my dad's fifty odd year old bakelite handled "made in England" Gillette handle with a similar butterfly leaf safety razor mechanism. Still works, never failed me for the last twenty years since he passed it to me.
Just used one of these for the first time today picked it up at target the Van Der Hagen long handle, and let me just say I've been converted 🙌🏽 best shave I've ever had zero hassel and 3 bucks a pack of blades ! Oh yeah good bye cartridges 😏 And let's just admit there down right cool 👍🏽
I completely agree! Made the switch to double edge safety razors about a year ago- very glad I did! Never going back to cartridge razors! Only thing I would add to your instructions on using DE safety razors- Don’t press- let the the weight of the razor and sharpness of the blade do all of the work. Super close shave👍
I'm 63. I use my late father's Gillette safety razor made sometime in the mid 1950s, which he used every day for decades. It works GREAT, and the blades are CHEAP, but man oh man, do I get a GREAT shave every time. Modern cartridge razors are ridiculously expensive and don't shave as well. There's no reason to spend so much money when an old fashioned, double edged safety razor with ordinary bar soap will leave you with a smooth shave every time. I shave in the shower, with the water turned off of course after lathering up. The mess is all rinsed away when I rinse off, the water is already hot, the Dial soap is already all over my beard, and it works GREAT. Welcome back to the past, young men, don't throw money away on gimmick razors.
I switched too because those razors look and feel great. Don't feel bad if you start collecting them. They are less expensive that other things people collect, and there are not many things you collect that can make your face feel good! Maggard's version 2 open comb gives me the best combination of closeness and comfort. Almost as good as my Shick Quatro and Harry's razors.
I tried this today, and I'm switching to the double edge blade safety razor.. great comfortable close shave.. JUST BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS and enjoy a great shave
It seems to me that the disposables used to be good, but now they angle the blade so flat that it's impossible to cut yourself, but they'll do one shave but not two. And the multiblades are the same, one shave and then they clog up or something. Annoying. So, I (an oldtimer) decided to get a safety razor just like I had 20 yrs ago. And, lo and behold, everything is good. I don't have any trouble with cuts, shaving is completely easy, the single blade doesn't clog up, you can use it multiple times, .... definitely a win.
My the switch today, my first time using a double edge safety razor after using cartridge razors all my life. I was a little intimated at first, but completed a full face and head shave with 4 days growth and quite pleased how it turned out, only 5 nics 😉.
Welcome to wet shaving! The community is really nice and surprisingly there's no hate against newcomers so if you have any (I mean any) questions just ask! I feel like lathering is the hardest thing for a beginner so if you are struggling I can give you tips.
I personally don't mind paying attention while I shave with safety razors because it's a nice skill to have, basically a more easily handling straight razor, it feels nice to pay attention to detail, witch is slowly going down in this generation
I agree. As a millennial, I agree that things move very quickly nowadays. It's nice to slow down once in a while and have a nice shave on a Sunday morning.
There is no better way to shave than with a DE or a straight. I switched to DE about 3 years ago. Make sure you get a good brush and quality soap or cream!
*Welcome to the wonderful world of DE Safety Razors.* *Once you find the right Razor/Blade/Soap/Brush combination for you, it truly becomes a hobby that your face will THANK YOU, for the rest of your life.*
years ago, my pops gave me an old gillette adjustable razor. the thing works great. i get a pack of 10 blades for about 3.50. i haven't bought the other overpriced blades in years.
I inherited an old Schick DE razor and love it! Its 50+ years old and still works like a champ. You do have to take it easy and learn how to gently use it, but once you get the hang of it you won't go back. No ingrown hairs and its actually cheaper than the high end shaving blades they sell now. Amen Bro!
Good deal John. As you said, the big companies want to gouge the consumer with multiblade cartridge razors that don't even provide comfort much of the time. With a safety razor, you can shave daily if you like. No more dreading shaving. I switched to DE shaving about 3 years ago, but progressed to straight razors and shavettes. I wonder if you've also discovered shaving soap and a brush as well. Much more comfortable and certainly affordable. While many find that this turns into a costly hobby, it doesn't need to be. I got my first brush for around $15 on Amazon. You can find products at the local store, though the selection is limited. I also shave my head. There's a world of traditional wet shavers out there, and many groups on social media to get together. Welcome to comfort and savings.
Marbles O Yeauh that's tough I prefer a shavette, but a DE is safest until you learn to use one properly. Even then, a DE has the least risk of cutting yourself. I find it boring.
Congrats. on the swifch over! That was my first safety razor 3 years ago and loved it so much that I began collecting them .I'm convinced that that is the last razor you'll ever need provided you'll clean it once a month and apply clipper oil to it every few months. It's a very coose copy to a vintage Gillette Flair Tip from the 1960s and shaves very well! Welcine to shaving the way ir fathers and grandfatherss did! Try a shaving brush and a good soap.. it makes shaving even more enjoyable.
I am going back to these, as I started with them as a boy. I changed to GILLETTE and now am changing back. We all know why I guess. I watch Tesla racing channel mostly because of that great Southern accent.
you can flip the blade and therefore 4 edges from one blade, if just starting out, get an quality adjustable razor and this will allow you to start with less aggressive blade reveal and progress to a more aggressive razor as you get used to it (best cheaper quality razor for a beginner, IMHO Rockwell 6c -- having shaved for years I bought the Rockwell 6S, no negative reviews and I think this is my go to lifetime razor!)
I’ve been using a DE razor for years. I’m never going back to regular use of cartridges. Once you learn the technique it is just as quick as a cartridge blade. More economical too.
Bought one at Dollar Tree just to try it. Fell in love after first use. Went out and order better blades. I still use the dollar tree handle I wonder if buying a better handle makes a difference because with good blades I shave both my head and face no problem
I couldn't agree more. I switched several years ago and don't regret it. The blades are cheap and it's a close comfortable shave. A vintage Gillette flare tip is inexpensive and will last you a life time. But I have found a good shave soap also makes a big difference. I usually used Arko with a brush, now I'm using a product called Cremo shave soap. Use as directed or seen on UA-cam. Blades are "generally" the same, but if you start using a safety razor get an assortment package from "Try a blade" and see what works for you.
Those razors are great, I stopped using them because the disposable ones you can shave extremely quickly. I'm going to switch back and have the disposable razors just in case
Wet shaving is making a huge comeback. I'm glad to hear you enjoy it! Traditional shaving is much better for your skin and truly is the most cost effective way. Head on over to my channel for any tips you may need and to see just how many products are out there. Cheers!
When I first started using a safety razor I'd nick myself once in a while until I learned the secret to shaving with one. PAY ATTENTION! Using a cartridge razor you can think about other stuff while you're shaving but when you use a safety razor, you have to think in the moment about what you're doing. It's kind of like a meditation. I love it.
I have a Van Der Hagen razor as well. It's low cost but it works better than any multi-bladed sissy razor I've ever used. I'll definitely be saving up for a Merkur or something higher end. There's no way I could ever switch back. I might try to convince my old man to make the switch
Switched to safety razors like a decade ago, buying more blades online for like £9 per 100 blades. Can't say I miss paying loads of cash for multi-blade cartridges. I don't get irritated skin anymore, and frankly, I enjoy the ritual of a shaving brush and soap. It's a pleasurable experience.
I just started wet shaving and it definitely has a learning curve. What has helped me is using the the bar on the safety razor. I thought about the name and the bar is the safety part of the safety razor. I lean or press the bar (that is in front of the blade) against my skin, then find the blade angle. Other common sense steps need to betaken such as making sure the face is very wet, (make sure face is very wet before adding shaving cream) or a pre-shave oil is used before adding the shaving cream. I love shaving this way, hope this was helpful
I recently got one of these. I had to relearn how to shave, but I'm really liking it now. For me, I have to remember a few simple guidelines. 1. Don't get in a hurry. 2. Be mindful of the angle. 3. Don't press very hard. But, as I said, I'm getting used to it.
My friend uses these and he told me that its the best shave hes gotten too. Wow, you guys are really selling me on this lol He told me that some of his blades last weeks and weeks and weeks on end. I, right now, do the dollar shave club. Not bad. Good price. Good razors. but $17 for the starter kit, plus cheap razors that are good and last forever?? I'm sold!
Im a college student who works in the mornings= almost broke. Im south american so a pack of Mach 3 costs 8$ here. I went to the market and found a counterfeit arabic safety razor... 1$!! Went home with some Gillette blades and tried it... I shaved my entire torso, thighs and arms without a sweat or cutting myself, even without cream, also works perfect on genitals... Despite the brand, this device has an amazing design and it works flawlessly
Heck I have a couple of those laying around out in a box I have of my dad and grandpa's old things they use to take camping. I've used some of the unused razors to strip decals and crap off old cars I've been working on. I think I'll bring in the nice gold one my grandpa had in and give it a try.
Try sourcing Japanese blades branded Feather, those are the sharpest I have ever used. This razor requires training to use so if you try it long enough, you will know how to. All men in poorer nations obviously use these thanks to the cost, but, the risk of getting minor nicks is high for a novice
Was hoping to switch from Cartridge razors to Electric shaver until a Barber highlighted to me the level of razor bumps on my face (thanks to the flourescent lights too). It was then I figured how ignorant I was thinking the cartridge razors I've been shaving with, in a short time turn dull, but havent felt it. What I failed to observe is the triple blades do the trick but think the razor is still good to go. Think of slicing a potato using a grater that has one blade and another that has more than one. The latter may seem efficient but it actually rips the potato as they turn dull compared to the dullness of the single slicer which is what happens to the skin. Been a year since I switched to DE and not only I save quite a sum, I also get to protect my face skin most importantly.
I also just switched over. I've only shaved once with it so far though. I didn't cut myself and it was the best shave I've ever had. I didn't have any special shave goo like they say to use. Instead I used a foaming soap that I made using regular Softsoap brand liquid soap diluted with water about 1 part soap to 2 parts water in a foaming soap dispenser. Still worked great! So far I'm happy that I made the change.
I was going through my last year christmas gifts i got from my kids and forgot i had a nautica one like that...came with blades and a stand. imma use it now
I picked up one as well because the other brands caused a lot of skin irritation. in my experience, this safety razer completely eliminated all skin irritation that I previously got using a standard double or triple blade razor.
A hint for less irritation for people with sensitive skin. I don't use shaving creams or gels but buy Tea Tree conditioner and use that both for my face and my head. It's unbelievable. Leaves the skin feeling fresh and rash free especially for those of us shaving our heads. Highly recommended!
Been shaving with a safety razor for years, cant go back, cartridge razors just wont cut it. Find a razor you like, a variety of blades, some decent cream or soaps and start enjoying your shaves.
I have been getting shave rash for about 20 years using gillette mach 3. Then about 6 months ago I tried safety razor. Best thing I every did!!!!!!! I have never seen my neck skin in such good condition, I was a little bit emotional (for a rugby player:)). The shave rash had been an issue for so long and now it is completely gone!!!!!!!!!!!
Picked one up at my Dollar Tree just to check i out.. Came with the razor and 5 pack of blades.. I usually use walmart brand 4 blade disposable blades.. Will try this out and if i like it i will invest in a better razor and blades.
You did not mention which brand of blade you bought. The only $7 per 100 that is any good (for me) is Dorco ST-300. For a couple of dollars more you can get Astra, which is generally considered to be among the best. They seem to work very well in almost any razor for most users. Try a true vintage Gillette or Star from Ebay; then you'll know what cool is.
Gratulation! If you also use a shaving soap and a shaving brush you are on the right way. But there are better razors on the market than this China-made - Look for brands like Parker, Mühle or Merkur. My favorite is the Merkur 34C.
Machined brass? Anything you could have bought today for less than twenty dollars at your local grocery store is going to be cast zinc (pot metal). All the same, I'm glad you are enjoying the shave.
I inherited one of these after my grandfather passed away its an old Gillette from the 1920s never used a safety razor in my life. Only used cartridge razors up to that point. I shaved with the safety and it gave the best damn shave I've ever had. Blew all cartridge razors out of the water needless to say I threw out All my disposable and cartridge razors and never looked back Safety razors are literally better in every way just takes a little practice
Safety Razors are getting more popular in the UK ,for a number of reasons. Men's Grooming is getting more popular . Safety Razors are more Greener through plastic pollution awareness, Plus also getting more popular due to the TV Drama "Peaky Blinders". So much so at The Peaky Blinder festival in Birmingham ,there were two stalls selling Antique and new Safety Razors
I got a cheap dorco plastic safety razor on ebay for like $4 dollars and a multi pack of blades too (personas, feather, astra, platinum, Gillette etc) I use shave oil shave secret and I couldn't be happier.. When done i drop the razor in an jar full of isopropyl alcohol to get it cleaned
Nice!! They are great!! But I doubt that one your holding is stamped brass. Most likely Zamic. Don't chip it or have the zamic exposed because it will crumble after a while.
I started shaving with a Vanderhagen DE. I liked but thought it could have shaved better. I moved up to more quality razors and shave creams. I get amazing shaves now, at a much lower cost. There is a large number of blades to try. I recommend buying samples untill you find the best blades for you. Not all blades shave the same!!!
Vander Hagen is extremely mild or, I dont want this to sound bad but it is not very efficient. As a starter Razor I really recommend a Merkur 34 C. Not extremely agressive but does the job very well with a 3 pass shave. I recommend watching "Kevy Shaves and Paul H films, also Ken Surfs to learn about blades, razors and techniques. DE shaving must be learned. And takes patience.

I inherited an old Schick DE razor and love it! Its 50+ years old and still works like a champ. You do have to take it easy and learn how to gently use it, but once you get the hang of it you won't go back. No ingrown hairs and its actually cheaper than the high end shaving blades they sell now. Amen Bro!
So true. Great vid. Liked, and added to favorites. Keep it up, John.
Welcome to comfort and savings.
ronnie greher which between the DE and Shavette give you the better closer shave and safer?
Marbles O Yeauh that's tough I prefer a shavette, but a DE is safest until you learn to use one properly. Even then, a DE has the least risk of cutting yourself. I find it boring.
ronnie greher if boring means less cuts I'll take that lol thanks for your response I really appreciate it
Congrats. on the swifch over! Try a shaving brush and a good soap.. it makes shaving even more enjoyable.
welcome to the gents club
LOL ! First time I use one cut myself bad. Then I stop. But I got back into and it is great to shave with. Like butter. Rockwell 6C
I am going back to these, as I started with them as a boy. I changed to GILLETTE and now am changing back. We all know why I guess. I watch Tesla racing channel mostly because of that great Southern accent.
I'll never go back to disposable razors after using a safety razor. The things are awesome!
I started shaving by this and it really gives you a cool shave in less time!
Great vid! Also important point is we throw away billions of plastic disposable shavers every year, and three are a great way to reduce waste . 👍🏻
you can flip the blade and therefore 4 edges from one blade, if just starting out, get an quality adjustable razor and this will allow you to start with less aggressive blade reveal and progress to a more aggressive razor as you get used to it (best cheaper quality razor for a beginner, IMHO Rockwell 6c -- having shaved for years I bought the Rockwell 6S, no negative reviews and I think this is my go to lifetime razor!)
The handle doesn't make that much difference aside from personal preference unless you buy some 2$ Chinese unbranded handle
So did I. I ordered mine this morning.
Awesome tutorial, I got mines on clearance for 3 bucks. We bought 4 extra ones. Save money and smooth like a babies skin.
I love it.
This is a razor for a REAL MAN.
I have a Van Der Hagen razor as well. It's low cost but it works better than any multi-bladed sissy razor I've ever used. I'll definitely be saving up for a Merkur or something higher end. There's no way I could ever switch back. I might try to convince my old man to make the switch
I just made the switch yesterday, definitely worth the switch.
Welcome to the Revolution.
I'm sold!
I started using safety razors eight years ago when I was still in my 30's, I'll never go back to disposables again.
Very cool video! Wet shaving with a DE razor is amazing and fun. The Merkur Futur 700 is my go to lifetime razor! All the best for you!
Dude, your voice is hypnotic!
When I first started using a safety razor, I’d be bleeding like a stuck hog after every shave!
The best shaving on the planet...DE shaving...get a better razor and enjoy....Edwin jäger de89...
Great video mate. And welcome to the "Dark side" - just be openminded and remember to experiment 👍🏻
Olli Suomalainen im in au as well, been using de razor for about 6mths now. Just start slow till you get use to it and you will be fine.
I was going through my last year christmas gifts i got from my kids and forgot i had a nautica one like that...came with blades and a stand. imma use it now
Just made my purchase on Amazon. Great video!
I picked up one as well because the other brands caused a lot of skin irritation. in my experience, this safety razer completely eliminated all skin irritation that I previously got using a standard double or triple blade razor.
Welcome to the DE Safety razor club! I use a Gillette Goodwill (open comb) from the 30s. Consistently great shaves every time.
A hint for less irritation for people with sensitive skin. I don't use shaving creams or gels but buy Tea Tree conditioner and use that both for my face and my head. It's unbelievable. Leaves the skin feeling fresh and rash free especially for those of us shaving our heads. Highly recommended!
Greatest of greats on that accent brotha!
An additional plus about these safety razors is the fact it is less plastic waste.
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH another one has joined the dark side!
Picked one up at my Dollar Tree just to check i out.. Came with the razor and 5 pack of blades.. I usually use walmart brand 4 blade disposable blades.. Will try this out and if i like it i will invest in a better razor and blades.
Great video. Thanks!
I freaking love your accent!
Still the best shave ever ! Lather up with a brush , and go S-L-O-W ! I do 3 passes, NICE shave !
Safety Razors are more Greener through plastic pollution awareness,
Plus also getting more popular due to the TV Drama "Peaky Blinders".
Great video and editing, man. I see that you put a lot of work into it. I also see that you happen to like chrome plated office staplers...a lot.
Nice!! They are great!! But I doubt that one your holding is stamped brass. Most likely Zamic. Don't chip it or have the zamic exposed because it will crumble after a while.
what model wristwatch are you wearing in this video?
I started shaving with a Vanderhagen DE. I liked but thought it could have shaved better. I moved up to more quality razors and shave creams. I get amazing shaves now, at a much lower cost. There is a large number of blades to try. I recommend buying samples untill you find the best blades for you. Not all blades shave the same!!!
Mark Ferguson how did the vanderhagen compare to better ones?
Vander Hagen is extremely mild or, I dont want this to sound bad but it is not very efficient. As a starter Razor I really recommend a Merkur 34 C. Not extremely agressive but does the job very well with a 3 pass shave. I recommend watching "Kevy Shaves and Paul H films, also Ken Surfs to learn about blades, razors and techniques. DE shaving must be learned. And takes patience.
