Just built my own by myself 2 weeks ago, 14x18 traditional and wood. Cheaper to build, way cheaper. Spent $1300 and used great quality materials. Made of wood, can take it down quick or replace the lumber pretty easy if needed. Comparable’s are over $6000
You're not old but saving money for yourself and family. It's more cost saving to build things ourselves than pay more to a contractor. Really love your videos and ideas behind
Problem is you asked them first. It's like them telling me I can't cut a tree down in my front yard. Well guess what the tree got cut down. Most HOA's aren't going to take you to court over staining a fence. Most don't even have the money to do so. They're usually people with power trips that enjoying saying no or fighting over everything. Like the old saying, it's easier to ask for forgiveness then it is for permission.
Doesn't sound like you have been around for long. MOST HOAs will give you a big fat fine of 500 dollar for each day you have done something that contravenes their rules. So in the three cutting case, they would have you put another, mature tree in that place, and fine you 500 dollar for each day that you take to do so.
I totally agree about HOA, had some issues as well. We ended up moving and four years later we found house without one. One thing that could change it is to run for the board.
Its political and the best way to really get out of an HOA, have people vote to disband it which the residents can do once the "keys" are turned over from the developer aka builder aka HOA OR move into the city or buy land in the country. lol
I personally would rather have a neighbor with a house painted with pink polka dots than be restricted by an HOA. I'll never buy a house that is bound by an HOA.
Different strokes for different folks. There's nothing wrong with properly run HOAs. The problem is if you give people even a little bit of power, they will abuse it. Be it head coach of an 8 year old football team or president of an HOA. An HOA is basically just a another level of government run by you and your neighbors. They were formed because some people didn't follow unwritten rules. The rules of society. We've always lived with HOAs, just unofficially. People just stopped caring about their neighbors.
@@andielliott7721 Exactly. Also, what if 18 out of 20 neighbors all agree they need to have their private street repaved? What will happen is that 2 of those neighbors will get their street repaved for free and 18 of them will have to pay more than what they should. My parents live in a small private street without an HOA but luckily all the neighbors are good people. No one wants to paint their house pink. Everyone always chips in for holiday decorations and maintenance fees. Imagine how much of a nightmare it would be if one of your neighbors refused to pay for any maintenance, both on their own house and in the neighborhood.
The problem is you are paying for it. I lived in a town where the second you had pealing paint or screams that got torn they would rush over and issues a warning and tickets came a week later. Most homes were under $100k. Seriously, we are all working hard to survive, don't have time for the petty stuff.
Great video. I also learned the hard way when trying to assemble my gazebo during high winds....lol..the instructions shoud list that installers should always check the weather before assembly. Cheers
So Im a VP of a HOA. But first, that pergola/deck situation is 🔥 and now I want to do it. Back to the HOA part, yes to all of that. Everyone of us that are on our board are younger, diverse, and it's our community's first board. The president and I are big on nuance. Some of the rules made 0 sense to us, and since I oversee the ARC committee, we allow things that we know a more "traditional" board probably wouldn't. Like you said, boards help keep things from looking bad, which keeps prop values up and can even limit neighbor issues, but I think boards often overstep. People should be able to enjoy the homes and properties they work hard for. I should start a HOA page lol
What you should do is have the neighbors vote to disband the board. The board doesn't deserve the extra money being paid to it for a bunch of power hungry weirdos to trip on their new , mostly fake, positions. It's the government making you work for free so that an extra tax is collected.
@@macroxx6476 I reality , no. Property values are based on comp sales nearby. It doesn't matter what your house looks like. If a couple of houses near you sells for a certain price, your house will be valued for taxes near that. It has nothing to do with what you could get someone to pay for it. That is solely up to the buyer(s).
how did you find out where the HOA bylaws came from? I am having issues with mine as well about a metal fence that isn't chain link. I think these are old as well.
It was hard getting thru the endless hoa complaining- but awesome result. And Link please. I built a screen in porch - my hoa didn’t have any issues. The key is to not give too many details. The fact you asked them if you could paint the inside side of your fence is more of an issue with you than with HOA. Perhaps you overly ask them to anything? You might say that is what you’re supposed to do. It is not. As you rationalized. If they can’t see it. You don’t need to ask. The hoa drives by the FRONT of your house once per month. And if they can’t see it. They don’t say a word. It’s really that simple.
This is exactly the video i was looking for, was either thinking of building my own pergola or purchasing one. Thank you for answering this for me and i would love a link to this pergola. Thank you
Just got here from ur facebook page after watching ur deck build... i subscribed and clicked the notifications really fast lol... love your work Donnie, really impressed by ur story telling with your builds... your videos are really entertaining, i am learning so much from u... its like im listening to an audio book 😂😂... thank you for sharing all your builds!
Hey there, this is a great video. which model is this one? also how did you attach to the deck itself? I want to do something similar but afraid I'll have to pull up the boards and add something under the deck or between joists.
Yes you can sit under it while it rains and nothing drips on you. It has a built in water gutter system and all water is diverted off. Nothing underneath gets wet unless the wind is blowing crazy and blows side ways rain in it. The pergola is awesome. But I attached a link to the video. When you watch the video you will see a shopping bag link pop up on the left side of the screen. That’s the link 👍
Congrats, nice looking deck/pergola. Just one question: how could you get legs of the pergola plume? Do you need to install them on a strong foundation?
I'm interested in this pergala I've had several estimates that I could order 3 of yours please tell me the size of the deck ou have I'm looking at a 12×10 pergola on cinders blk. Thankyou for this great idea
Excellent video - appreciate your commentary on HOA, too! (And 100% Agree!) Question: which pergola and add-ons did you purchase? Curious as to what it is rated for wind as the bolt-down fixtures don't look that robust for my climate. If you could send me the link / coupon, I'd appreciate it!
I bought one for my parents… the only thing that bothers me about this, is there now electric like there is for the Backyard Discovery ones… my only gripe but I will be adding power to it.
I just wonder is it strong enough to anchor the posts to the composite wood? I want to build one for myself but on the concrete deck but no top. Just the posts and curtain across.
Correct about HOA. I need to change my fence as it already broken from multiple sides but hate to go with old fashioned ones. Love to see this pergola actually I ordered one from Costco and waiting for delivery good thing is it is a same company mirador. Love the idea of sides I will for sure look into it. Thanks
Can you please list which specific pergola you purchased including size, as well as the screen attachment and back panels? Because looking at all those added parts it seems like it comes out to much more than the DIY estimate of $4,500

Mirador Looks like what I need and I will have the same problems as you with my HOA. I have a new house being built in a Del Webb Senior Community now (2024) Their CC&R’s were written over 20 years ago and they wont let us use wood, or to make a raised deck, even if I use composite, etc. They require all structures to have stucco posts and roofs to match the houses tile, we are not allowed to even have a solid fence between our house’s only metal open view fencing 5” maximum, etc. I want to take this video to the board when my house is done being built, and I start my 90 day time limit to have my yard landscaped. Yes, can I please get a discount code for these products. Thank you!

Yeah you’re probably right. I wish I would have just done it but now I’m on the radar for asking. My bad completely.
They won’t take you to court but they fine me by replacing all my windows by myself with out asking for their permission…

Great video.. how did you anchor the paragola to the deck, does it need a deck pole for support under the deck for paragola legs
Does the covering work well during rain?
Hello! How are the posts secured to the deck? Only to the deck boards or do you have a footer below? thanks!
Is the wood treated for termites beforehand?
Gardens looking great with that pergola up.
Hope you have a great summer.
