This was rough. Poor Arnheid 💔 And massive props to her voice actress. She was superb! We’ve finished season 2 over on Patreon for anyone interested in getting EARLY and UNCUT access to these reactions! www.patreon.com/carlie_and_ange
I think Ketil is given too much credit from the general public. It is clear from the beginning that any slave owner, cruel or not, is despicable. Yukimura understands how easily he can deceive the audience into believing Ketil is a fair man because the audience perceives slavery as something that cannot be abolished in that time period. Therefore, he uses the flawed persona of a "good-willed" character as a vehicle to convey the inherent evil of slavery in any form. The audience may 'understand' why Ketil breaks, but there was never a true breaking of character to begin with. He was a slave owner who had a sex slave, a statement that cannot be denied and certainly does not describe a good person. Any character who continues such practices without acknowledging their wrongness is flawed. (I present this statement in contrast to Thorfinn, who has likely committed worse acts but acknowledges them and strives for redemption, which is all one can ask from a person who has perpetrated what we define as worse.) Ketil's flaws were present from the start, and it takes a slave seeking freedom, a concept universally agreed upon as fair and just, for him to take actions that include killing someone. There is a linear progression to his character, serving the narrative purpose effectively. While it is a correct view to understand Ketil's actions, we must not make the mistake of sympathizing with him. We can comprehend the linear nature of his character, but sympathy towards him indicates a problem within ourselves. I recommend therapy for those who sympathize with him or even consider that Arnheid deserved any punishment. We should not victimize the aggressors in this case, as they are fundamentally flawed. Lastly, I believe we can reflect on the famous quote "Our greatest mistakes don't define us" and see how it applies to both Ketil and Thorfinn. Thorfinn's depths of wrongdoing may be deeper, yet he makes efforts to amend them, whereas Ketil fails to acknowledge his own mistakes. Consequently, we can define Ketil as evil. This implies that we should not define ourselves solely by our greatest mistakes but by our actions in striving to make amends. I apologize for any previous errors or lack of structure in my rant, but I hope you understand my perspective.
Throughout the show Ketils dad always said greed is bad. Everything that Ketil owns now is slipping out of his grasp and the rage of losing it all changed him. His greed led to his violence.
@@PRITAMDEBNATH-e6c while she's pregnant? You people don't know anything about equality. Equal doesn't mean same. When some idiots are going to accept this.
This was one of the most disturbing anime moments I've ever witnessed. Especially because this cruel act was commited by someone I kinda liked at first. While Ketil was a flawed individual, his kindness was really refreshing, especially considering he is a slave owner. But his biggest flaw is that he can't commit to his pacifist ideals. While this show proves that you're not a coward for not wanting to fight anybody, it still takes some courage and dedication in order to remain a good person no matter how bad things turn out for you. And Ketil wasn't up to the task. While I understand why he snapped, his actions are still inexcusable.
Yeah I think it shows the difference between thorfinn and ketil. One is a pacifist because he doesn't want to hurt anyone and the other is a pacifist because he doesn't want to get hurt. Once he got hurt, he lashed out on the most vulnerable person around him cause he's a coward
In the manga Ketil's wife was also more apparent with implying that Arnheid was sleeping around with Thorfinn and Einar (possibly more) which added more fuel to the fire and Ketil's doubt.
Ketil's turn was written perfectly. His face when he confronted Arnheid. That is the face of a man who had power, but lost everything in just a few days. That is the face of a man who came home wanting to be comforted by his slave, and then finds out he has been "betrayed". That is the face of a man who had a monster growing inside of him, a monster which comes out when he breaks. Looking back on the series there were small hints of things to come. He was such a good master, but he still wants to keep the power he has as the master.
Snake was definitely trying to save Arnheid and he stopped Ketil the only way he could have been stopped at that moment. Like you said, Ketil is lashing out for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that he doesn't feel in control anymore of his life and what he perceives as his belongings. If Snake would have stopped him by trying to take control of the situation, Ketil wouldn't have reacted well. Instead he calmed Ketil down by effectively saying "hey man, if you keep going now she will die, I know you are angry, but do you really want to do that?" Also he certainly has more empathy than most of the people on the farm, it's just that the lives of his own men are top priority for him so he will look out for them first, but he will also help others when they are in danger (for example how he saved Thorfinn at the beginning of the season)
At the start of the arc, some people theorized what if Ketil was the example of a true warrior? He's a pacifist, works hard on his farm with conviction and treats slaves fairly (in comparison to what most would), even giving them a chance to be free. However, we now realise that his pacifism never came out of strength, but from weakness. He doesn't have the courage of a true warrior, but hides behind his cowardice when things go south. Peak fiction.
I was more angry than sad I was not able to cry But ik what this anime is trying to show No matter how despicable one is "You have no enemies" Because...... Everyone has their reasons to snap Sometimes things are just at their worst possible state and shit happens
“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.” this episode always remind me of this joker's quote.
That's just people with anger issues trying to project their problems on everyone else. many people have bad days. most suck it up and keep going. some think they then have an excuse to hurt others
Ketil's actions are in no way justified, but they follow logically from previous events. All the stress he's under, all the betrayal, and he comes looking for the one person he finds solace in and finds out she tried to escape with her husband. That's the final straw that breaks him.
Do not fear the anger of a violent man, there are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man. Ketil was pushed to this point by the selfishness and cruelty of Canute and the actions of Arnheid who betrayed the trust that had been placed in her. It's horrific for a reason, because it's not something that you ever expected to see from him.
I believe that what snake did is what thorfinn referred to as “the first method “ trying to resolve the issue through talking and explaining to him that his punishment went past a betting and turned into killing her
It enraged me, alone in front of my screen, when I saw him striking her like that. To think he was a good person just anxious about not doing enough for his family, and it drove him mad, leading him to be even more violent than his elder son he feared. Poor Arnheid...
When it came to the scene where he stopped Ketil, Snake was very much tied up in how much he could do for her. He's just a hired guard on the farm. He works for Ketil, and Arnheid is Ketil's property. Snake has no right to tell him to stop. Even if he forced the situation to stop, Ketil's anger could have turned on him or his men. He doesn't want to make Ketil his enemy. So when he does intervene, he had to have a good reason while still being as respectful and tactful with his words. All to defuse the situation. Ketil was in an absolute frenzied state. So when he grabs the rod, Snake acknowledges it is within Ketil's right to kill her. He's being deferential and respecting his authority as the master of the farm, all to reassure Ketil Snake knows his place. At the same time come to Arnheid's aid by gently questioning if he actually wants her dead. A reasonable question from someone Ketil has valued advice from before when it comes to punishments. It fortunately works in snapping Ketil out of his blind rage. This is all the help Snake can provide Arnheid. And Snake really was the only one with the strength and calming presence that could have defused the horrific scene without it escalating. Even Pater wouldn't have been able to calm things down as quickly and as well as Snake could. Even Pater was in shock and intervening (as someone who was a former slave) could have set Ketil off against Pater as another betrayal for all we could anticipate from his stark change in character. I don't think Snake has any hard feelings toward Arnheid. He may be angry at her for aiding in Gardar's escape, which cost men their lives, but she didn't want for anyone to die. Nor did she raise a hand to anyone. So I don't think he hates her. He doesn't show it in his words, but in his treatment and actions, he understands her circumstance. All of this was forced on all of them. It's just as Sverkel said to Snake about slaves just being unlucky. He doesn't disagree with those words. It's that he can't change anything about it. He can only do his job and do what he can from that position. If Snake had any hate or resentment for Arnheid, he could have easily stood aside and done nothing. Leaving it to Pater or Leif to speak up for her. Snake really had no obligation to take action. Taking action actually posed the greater risk of backfiring on Snake, who had effed up as far as protecting the farm. Snake was possibly fortunate Ketil badly needs him for the fight with Canute to avoid being chewed out or dismissed for letting things get so far out of control while he was away. It's also possible that the mercy Snake received from Arnheid when Gardar could have killed him too was paid back in this instance. I think Snake understands Arnheid and cannot blame her for wanting to be free and with her husband. He's just realistic and knew from the start it was hopeless and would only get her in trouble. He knew Gardar was going to be put to death one way or the other for the laws he broke. Just as Snake might understand the kid that stole flour, it was still his job to capture him and bring him to justice. Much like a cop. Doesn't mean he can't understand the criminal's reasons, but he still has a job to do and laws of the farm and Norse society to uphold. He probably would have pitied Gardar, but any sympathy evaporated when the man crossed the line and killed his men. From how I perceive him, Snake is the sort that views things without any bs. He's a realist and accepts the facts of a given situation. He understands where he stands, where others stand, and accepts the rules and culture that guide it all. It's not something he can change. He's just a lowly, no-name bum serving as a guard. Those like Thorfinn and Arnheid are slaves belonging to his employer. The farm is Snake's only home and refuge, which he's honor-bound to maintain the law and order there. His words can come off as harsh, but they are true. Like when he tells Arnheid to give up on Gardar and to no longer think of the man they captured as her husband. He's saying these things to her because he knows they can't be together. They are slaves. Gardar is a wanted man for committing murder and is destined for execution. Any attempt to escape would be futile and would get her beaten or killed, too. It would basically be easier on her in both heart and mind to pretend she never encountered Gardar at all. So while it sounds heartless, it's the best he can offer to her in the roles fate as dealt them. She even agrees with that reasoning from Snake for a time, when she chooses to ignore her husband's return for the sake of her unborn child. All before choosing to go visit him at the Guest's fort and everything spirals out of control around her.
Ketil, though wealthy, is not a special man. He is a hardworking man who is afraid of violence and sympathetic to children who steal from his farm. On the other hand, he is also a weak man who would violate a child in order to save his own skin. In other words, he is an ordinary man. This work depicts that any human being can become cruel to any extent just by being angry.
Yup morally Ketil is outright wrong in his actions. Just that I think the story does well in showing the logical steps that led to Ketil's downfall. He didn't abuse Arnheid for no reason, but lost to his own temper. Well-written character regression I must say, even if it's very difficult to watch.
This episode was hard to watch. The punishment scene was the first time an anime made me squirm and I almost had to walk away for a bit. Just brutal scene and heartbreaking. Between seeing Arnheid getting beat and seeing Ketil fall from grace like that. Rough.
you guys are the best reactor couple ever, also you're one of the best couples i've ever seen in my life. i hope the best for you and i hope i can find myself a soulmate like you are to eachother.
Ketil lost his mind on the verge of Crisis, at the end when he took out the sword of the box it reminded me of the first episode when Thorfinn found his knife in the box 😊 Season 2 is really good
4:07 "Thorkell was a little bit more obedient." Gonna disagree with that. XD Thorkell made the deliberate choice to defy the leader of the Jomsvikings & King Sweyn and joined England just so he could fight the Danish army and his blood family and warrior brethren, the Jomsvikings. He only did that because he realized fighting against them would be more fun. He only switched back to the Danish because he deemed Canute's attitude and goals more interesting and worthwhile than continuing to work for the losing English. Thorgil was aligned to serve the throne (he was a king's guard) up until the moment he realized his family was being set up and he'd already been deemed a criminal by Canute. After that, rebellion was the only option left to him. Not that Thorgil minded the situation. He's loyal to his family, sure, but he (like any strong warrior viking) is just as excited to be able to go into battle with what he knows is the strongest opponents he could hope to fight. That's what he shares with Thorkell. The thrill of a strong enemy. However, Thorgil fought the king's men and Jomsvikings when the situation was forced upon him. He followed the rules and orders of the king (even though he still believed in the old rules under Sweyn and Harald and viking law, like with duels). Thorkell followed his whims and switched sides so he could fight the Danish King and Jomsvikings for the thrill of it. And he has the freedom to get away with such insubordination and traitorous behavior because of how much of an asset he is in battle. He can even show disrespect and yell at Canute, which would get others killed on the spot. And there are other factors which allow Thorkell to run wild, but some might consider it spoilerish (although the hints have already been dropped in the anime back in S1 if you put the pieces together). Both are battle-hungry, but I gotta disagree and say Thorkell is the true loose cannon. Thorkell has no loyalty for anyone (man, family, or group). He'll fight against them all if it offered him amusement. He shows no obedience to anyone but his personal desire for strong opponents. He's not swayed by anything but a challenge in battle. Thorkell could betray Canute at any moment if he thought it would be more fun. Canute just knows how to manipulate him better than Sweyn, the leader of the Jomsviings, or Floki ever did. Canute knows how to keep things interesting enough to satisfy both their needs and prevent Thorkell from running off to join the enemy.
Easiest way to say it is that while we don't agree with what he did , we can understand how he got to that point of blind rage. he was being backstabbed and screwed over on everything by everyone and his eyes it wasn't fair since all he had done was try and be fair to everyone else. you can see by how calm she was when he came in the barn (compared to other slaves in trouble through the series) that nobody really took him seriously. a kid stealing bread got beaten 20 times yet she honestly thought he was soft enough to give her a slap on the wrist after trying to escape , getting 5 guards murdered and potentially 'cheating' on him with her husband. dark scene , but its interesting how they turned a kind character into a heel instantly
Ketil wasn’t the type of man who could steel himself for conflict like that without feeling empowered by beating a helpless pregnant woman to near death
Snake approached the whole beating situation very smart. He said that Ketil had every right to beat Arnheid but he would loose his property. Ketil was totally lost that moment but he definitely didn’t want to give himself any more openings. So Snake telling him what he did was right but it would be even smarter to stop so he can keep her was actually the best way to save Arnheid. Questioning the morality of this would have made Ketil just continue. This man seemed nice in the beginning because he treated Einar and Thorfinn nice and seemingly the other slaves as well. But why did he do that? Because he can’t face conflict. We see that he isn’t good at this with his sons and it eats at him as he has to face the kids who stole from him as well. As soon as something doesn’t go the way he is used to it builds up too much pressure. That man never learned how to work with negative emotions and never built up a healthy resilience. Him being nice to his slaves was just a way to avoid conflict with them because he wouldn’t be able to handle a bad situation. The moment with Arnheid really showed it. He’s a perfect example of a human who never learned how to deal with hardships. They go crazy (and let it out onothers) or they take their own lives.
I hate when people defend Ketil with "oh this was normal back then" LIKE OKAY? that doesn't make it right?? That just means everyone was equally bad Plus people like Snake exist.. The timeline does NOT defend or excuse his actions..It merely explains them
Genuinely the hardest episode to watch of any series I've ever seen. I hate that people even try and see things from ketils pov. Arnheid has literally no autonomy over herself or her future and its so heartbreaking to watch her get beaten down over and over again. Really gives you a perspective of how women were treated throughout history
I think people try to understand ketil’s point of view because it can be an insight into how women beaters develop. Although arnheid was slave, ketil didn’t strike me as free either. The man made little to no decisions in his life. He is another olmar who is being bullied. He couldn’t even make a basic decision of disciplining two child thieves that robbed him. His own wife, whom he knows hates arnheid, manipulated him to beat her senseless, even though he’s never listened to her before. He’s not a good human being for treating all the slaves nicely, he makes none of those decisions at all. Pater makes them all for him. He’s a weak man who gets pushed by everybody including Canute. How does he become a less manipulated weak man? Well watch olmar’s journey, he is currently being bullied and manipulated by family, strangers, and “friends” alike. He just killed a man. In a couple of episodes his character growth will catch you off guard.
@@Xantosdude I feel like that has more to do with ketil having no back bone rather than him being genuinely powerless though. You can't take all the blame off him just because he struggles a bit with decision making and being assertive. My point was more towards people who actually defend and sympathise with his actions. Also maybe, as a woman, it's harder to want to get an "insight into how women beaters develop" 😅
I am an anime noob that has always until now used English dub. I'm 14 episodes in an as an Icelander that practiced Judo throughout my adolescence and since the only language used in Judo is Japanize, so getting Iceland respectfully represented a really bad ass anime. (when I was a kid there was 0 mentions of us in popular media) and at the same time getting random shots of adrenaline because of Pavlovian response you form with certain Japanize words referees shout in Judo matches makes for a awesomely surreal viewing experience. p.s. I was raised old school, forced to kill an animal at 11years old, it's actually just a few generations ago we lived pretty much the same way we did a thousand years ago so stuff like that was important to be ok with. (I can do it but I hate it)
FOR THOSE BLINDED BY HATE: The script sneakily backs us up against the wall again. The idea of identifying an injustice and defending the wronged sounds good, it's the wronged revolution in its prime! But if the scope is changed, revolutionary hypocrisy loses its foundations. With Gadar it's not difficult to defend his life for being a slave, in our eyes it seems fair to defend him over random bodyguards named after animals. Gardar has suffered all sorts of injustices, and we defend him in the understanding that he is suffering a "greater injustice" in front of the guards he killed. But when it comes to defending Ketil... why is it so hard to ignore a single suffering slave, if it's for the sake of the ENTIRE farm, THAT will be suffering a violent INJUSTICE from the KING IN PERSON. Isn't it fair to defend an entire farm, and years of hard work by Skervel and Ketil, to create a good place for MOST slaves, over a single female slave? Is Arnheid's suffering fair, if it's to keep Ketil psychological, and keep him treating every other slave well? If it's for the benefit of the wronged, the solution is simple, keep the boss happy and we'll have a lot of happy slaves. If it is to defend the wronged, Ketil is the big victim here. Collectivist thinking always keeps us defending lesser injustices to attack greater injustices, but individually each one defends the injustice that he wants.
I don't think Ketil's and Gadar's actions are similar. While Gadar killed 5 people, they were people in direct combat with him. It was essentially a kill or be killed situation for him. On the other hand, Ketil takes out the injustice he had on a poor helpless woman who had nothing to do with what the injustice. He could have riled up the people on the farm and went on war and most people would be on his side. Protecting the farm and not attacking Arnheid are not either or options. He could have chosen both. He had no reason to essentially kill Arnheid, but he did and that is why people hate him. I'm sure people would not be defending Gadar if he had murdered some innocent woman or child while on his rampage.
That's just Ketil's true colors showing after the first sign of losing control, his goodness all revolved around stability, once that's gone, well, you get the real Ketil, a coward who's too weak and shallow to deal with hardships, someone who has exploited lies his whole life to gain respect that he never earned.
Beating up a woman, even if she's his slave, seems to make any man a villain, it's something that makes everything "black or white" very easy. I see few talk about the manipulative wife, who used the right words to convince the weakened husband, in a panic attack, to attack his slave, which she, the wife, hates so much. It seems clear to me that she intended for Ketil to overdo the beating and kill the poor slave. I really don't think he's ever executed so much punishment against Arnheid. She has never been shown injured thus far in the narrative, even though years have passed in this arc.(**The only time the slave was attacked until here was a big slap in the face, given precisely by the wife.) To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure. For me, he is an excellent character with enough depth to make you think about different subjects, just like Askelad. Poor f****r is just so done he doesn't knows what to do but go on a rampage. That's exactly how many men are today: the high taxes, the government stealing some of their hard-earned work, responsibility for the family, misfit children... We are charged with an almost magical ancestral strength to support all of this
17:35 This is where I actually believe it was Arnheid's fault for not explaining herself to Ketil sooner. Granted she never expected Ketil to just snap like that to that extreme, but if she had only tried to explain herself first, maybe Ketil could see where she's coming from. Worth a shot vs saying nothing at least.
The scene with Arnheid and Ketil. That was hard to watch. The way it was directed, the sound design, the music and the voice acting by Arnheid and Ketil's voice actors made this scene tough to witness. And this was pretty realistic (as much I hate to say it) because actual slave owners in our world would in fact do horrible stuff like this or something even more worse. Poor Arnheid 😢. I feel absolutely horrible for her (specially after she lost Gardar in the previous episode). And Ketil. I do see why he turned out like this as fragile men like him who can lose their minds when loads of bad stuff or even bad luck happens to them so MAYBE I can sympathize with him a tiny 0.0001% bit. Doesn't excuse what he did here because if your compare him with Arnheid who had to suffer bad things happening to her for years and yet she was strong enough to endure all of it. And the sad thing is what happened to Arnheid here was out of her control. The only mistake and "selfish" act I might say show did was going along with Thorfinn and Einar to escape with Gardar. The other things which happened to Ketil happened on their own specially that whole beef between him and Canute). This whole Gardsr incident just pushed Ketil to his breaking point over all the other bad stuff he was enduring to this point.
Ketil is a good person. Just a normal good person. And he is weak as same as most of us. All of us have probability to become Ketil in some extreme circumstances.
Yup, agreed. It's interesting to see so many people chime in to berate Ketil as if he's this monster they'd never be, when you can go out and see people lose their cool over FAR LESS important matters everyday, like road rage, arguments over politics, etc. Ketil is far closer to how we all are whether you like it or not; we're just fortunate to not have been pushed that far into the corner to find out.
Snake is someone who follows the rules above all, he does not consider that Arnheid deserves to die UNLESS the master chooses that she does, because the master has the right to kill his slaves (no, I don't justify that, I just say things as they were at that time, there are too many people intense with this scene, on both sides)
I wouldn't say hes second guessing his actions. He's reflecting on his choices. Second guessing occurs in the moment. When he made rhe choice he commited to it.
She simply ignores it when the master arrives nervous and with wood in his hand, and asks the question and she doesn't answer. Ketil felt betrayed and there was no way he could believe she was pregnant. no mention in which ketil knows that she had a husband.
unfortunately it was a different time and all, but it still doesn’t justify his actions in doing what he did. a slave owner is still a slave owner even if he did seem “good” at first, take thors for example, he never owned any slaves nor ever wanted to. he even bought a slave, only to free him from punishment and give him a peaceful death.
Most people feel more comfortable hating on him bc it's hard for us to accept that most of us would behave exactly the same way when pushed to those extreme circumstances. We like to believe we're better than this 'monster' when in reality, most of us snap at the most mundane triggers in our life (guy cuts you off on the road, someone throws racial slurs at you, someone breaks your stuff, etc).
@@terrykim2748 yeah I don’t like how much I see of myself in Ketil but I am glad that I’m aware of these shortcomings. It’s easy to denounce someone as a monster when you haven’t been in a situation close to this
I was so utterly disgusted when this ep aired. Not because of keitil but because there are people out here defending his actions smh 🤦♂ Everyday I keep losing faith in humanity 😑
snake stopped ketil for his sake, because he is working for him and also he is a good guy, first reason is working for him as he know he will regret it later if he killed her because he knows how much he loves her, and also he know she is pregnant with his child, also what ketil did was justified to me, he is a good guy, but they caught him on a very bad day, with everything that happened in one day to come finding the only person you trust betrayed your trust is not easy, emotions are fucking hard to get behind, and when someone lose it or snap he isn't in his right mind, what he did is wrong, but we know why he did it, he was a good guy, but just because this happened once doesn't mean he is a piece of shit all of a sudden. he lost control and he will be left with the consequences. we all seen people lose their shit when they catch their loved one cheating, and some crazy shit happened, love is crazy, and it's also why "crime of passion" is a thing in court. it's a one moment when you do some crazy shit that you'll regret later
Ketil's actions are BY NO MEANS JUSTIFIABLE, but you have to understand how much of a shock he had to endure all within a span of 3-odd days. You can't completely abuse the guy imo, Thorfinn and Einar got INSANELY lucky when Ketil bought them. That said, taking his frustrations out on the EASIEST target in Arnheid just exposed his true human nature. Arnheid is just an example of how slave masters and the consequences of those times treated other people with a very vile nature. I should also add. Ketil very likely thought of Arnheid as his trophy, his prized possession that HE OWNS for himself. I doubt he cared for the person Arnheind is, and basically used her as a sex slave for his stress relief when things went wrong. This show is amazing. Do you root for Ketil, could you... before this episode?
no, if ketil always thought of arnheid merely as a trophy, a prized possession, then her betrayal wouldn't mean as much, ketil saw arnheid as a person whom he poured all of his love to and just like how his childhood love was forcibly taken from him, he saw arnheid, the person of his desire and love, also being taken away from him and what stung him is his belief that arnheid didn't reciprocate the love and care he gave her by refusing her old flame and staying in the farm. thats why it stung, ketil is a good person, he is just a weak person.
Arhneid's VA was top tier☝...but you know what's sad??, some people are actually defending Ketil saying that what he did was justifiable...it's a lot worse in the manga too, Ketil kept on pressing the stick hardly to Arnheid's belly..I lost all repsect to Ketil after this...I was like "I hope Canute fucks this guy up"
She deserves death in my opinion or at least very very hard punishment. Imagine 5 of your friends get killed cuz of a woman helped the killer knowing that the killer will go for more killing. I would be furious for sure no matter wut the situation is and I will wish she will be dead.
I mean they're all slavers or helping slavers and they've all killed people so even then, Arnheid is still the most innocent person in the situation even if she screwed up bad
you're meant to find her selfish, the problem they've got is that the violence was so extreme that it shocked them. But they didn't think WHY it did and went right onto how horrible it was. They didn't expect Ketil to do it, they expected him to be the meek roll over and pretend to be dead guy he's always been. and that's why he was as angry with Arnheid as he was because she thought the same of him, meaning she never meant a word of the things she said to him.
@@UncensoredScion Maybe that's the reason I didn't feel bad for her, because of her selfishness. But the problem I really have with her was or with her selfishness was that she has a child and because of her feelings(selfishness) she put her child at risk causing the death of the child.
a lot of people thing ketil is shit to do that but i dont want sound machist or sthm but he got betrayed by people who he trust and in that period is the normal i dont supoprt what he did but i want to aclare
Nah, he is shit to do that and a despicable human being. There is no "but", whatever happened to him has nothing to do with him being willing to beat someone to death no matter how angry he is
Tbh I'm surprised they didn't just kill her. Her actions got 5 people killed after all. Shit was hard to watch but obviously she had to be punished some way or another.
@@spicethief4826 none of it was her fault, you could shift some blame to Gardar but he killed them all to protect himself and his family so they escape enslavement, which Snake and his men supported by working for Ketil in the first place.
@@DexDex000Idk whatever time period the show is in. Obviously we think it isn't but I highly doubt people of that age were as forgiving. You're looking at slaves from our time periods point of view. Her being partly responsible for the death of those 5 guards is also there, although Ketil clearly didn't care for that.
Farming happened in only some parts of the first 9 episodes as in the start of episode 10 they are done with all the work, even there we had 2 or 3 full Canute episodes and a full Einar first episode before that so its even smaller part of the season, you are just trying to find reasons why you didn't like it but can't come up with anything other then not being interested in actuall character development and trying to mask it as "farming boring"
That's fine to have a preference. Some people just prefer slow burn storytelling that focuses on themes and character building so it's not for everyone. But if you unironically think it's a farming simulator then you weren't paying attention. because only episodes 2 and 6 had a focus on farming.

Poor women 😢💔💔💔
(I present this statement in contrast to Thorfinn, who has likely committed worse acts but acknowledges them and strives for redemption, which is all one can ask from a person who has perpetrated what we define as worse.)
Ketil's flaws were present from the start, and it takes a slave seeking freedom, a concept universally agreed upon as fair and just, for him to take actions that include killing someone.

The shots, the direction, voice acting. What Vinland Saga can not do? It's just insane to have this quality. ❤
He may be a good slave master but in the end he's still a slave master, i never thought I'll be crying for her this much

In the manga Ketil's wife was also more apparent with implying that Arnheid was sleeping around with Thorfinn and Einar (possibly more) which added more fuel to the fire and Ketil's doubt.
Wow, Ketil's wife really is THE PoS I thought her to be
Ketil's turn was written perfectly.
I love how Vinland Saga without defending Ketil's action shows glimpses of his past to understand why he did it. Top writing
Ange's analysis is 100% spot on.
The characters in this show is so well written
I obviously don't agree with Ketil's actions, but I understand his past and why he's losing his mind
Me too he lost his mind
Snake was definitely trying to save Arnheid and he stopped Ketil the only way he could have been stopped at that moment. Like you said, Ketil is lashing out for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that he doesn't feel in control anymore of his life and what he perceives as his belongings. If Snake would have stopped him by trying to take control of the situation, Ketil wouldn't have reacted well. Instead he calmed Ketil down by effectively saying "hey man, if you keep going now she will die, I know you are angry, but do you really want to do that?"
Also he certainly has more empathy than most of the people on the farm, it's just that the lives of his own men are top priority for him so he will look out for them first, but he will also help others when they are in danger (for example how he saved Thorfinn at the beginning of the season)

Ketil's actions are in no way justified, but they follow logically from previous events. All the stress he's under, all the betrayal, and he comes looking for the one person he finds solace in and finds out she tried to escape with her husband. That's the final straw that breaks him.
I dont have any sympathy for him.

I believe that what snake did is what thorfinn referred to as “the first method “ trying to resolve the issue through talking and explaining to him that his punishment went past a betting and turned into killing her
It's definitely disturbing. I remember cringing the first time I watched this. As others have said, the voice acting was great.

He's saying these things to her because he
knows they can't be together. They are slaves. Gardar is a wanted man for committing murder and is destined for execution. Any attempt to escape would be futile and would get her beaten or killed, too. It would basically be easier on her in
both heart and mind to pretend she never encountered Gardar at all. So while it sounds heartless, it's the best he can offer to her in the roles fate as dealt them. She even agrees with that reasoning from Snake for a time, when she chooses to
ignore her husband's return for the sake of her unborn child.

Rough.

4:07 "Thorkell was a little bit more obedient."
Gonna disagree with that.

Love your vids. This was so sad but wonderful😢😢😊😊.❤❤❤
I hate when people defend Ketil with "oh this was normal back then"
LIKE OKAY? that doesn't make it right?? That just means everyone was equally bad
Plus people like Snake exist..

(I can do it but I hate it)
FOR THOSE BLINDED BY HATE:
The script sneakily backs us up against the wall again.
Fun fact: the scene where Arnheid gets beaten by Ketil has 300K views on youtube
She has never been shown injured thus far in the narrative, even though years have passed in this arc.(**The only time the slave was attacked until here was a big slap in the face, given precisely by the wife.)
To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure.
We are charged with an almost magical ancestral strength to support all of this
I Hate Ketil for everything he did, but this is brilliant character work for him. This episode cemented him in my top 5 in this show.

Ketil provided the audience with an alternative Plan B
Poor boys 😢 6:01
Actions have consequences and everything overall was shitty in that situation. I don't blame or hate anyone involved.
Katil beating Arnheid : 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Snake stops him : 🤤🥵
I wouldn't say hes second guessing his actions. He's reflecting on his choices. Second guessing occurs in the moment. When he made rhe choice he commited to it.
She simply ignores it when the master arrives nervous and with wood in his hand, and asks the question and she doesn't answer.
Ketil felt betrayed and there was no way he could believe she was pregnant.
no mention in which ketil knows that she had a husband.
it's always funny to see people so disgusted at ketil but it's all laughs and giggles for guys like askeladd and thorkell who have done 100x worse
unfortunately it was a different time and all, but it still doesn’t justify his actions in doing what he did. a slave owner is still a slave owner even if he did seem “good” at first, take thors for example, he never owned any slaves nor ever wanted to. he even bought a slave, only to free him from punishment and give him a peaceful death.
People hate on Ketil (justifiably so) but man I can at least understand him. This guy has lost everything, including control over himself
It’s easy to denounce someone as a monster when you haven’t been in a situation close to this

who woulda thought that Ketil is kinda the main villian in this arc
I was so utterly disgusted when this ep aired. Not because of keitil but because there are people out here defending his actions smh 🤦♂ Everyday I keep losing faith in humanity 😑
snake stopped ketil for his sake, because he is working for him and also he is a good guy, first reason is working for him as he know he will regret it later if he killed her because he knows how much he loves her, and also he know she is pregnant with his child,
also what ketil did was justified to me, he is a good guy, but they caught him on a very bad day, with everything that happened in one day to come finding the only person you trust betrayed your trust is not easy, emotions are fucking hard to get behind, and when someone lose it or snap he isn't in his right mind, what he did is wrong, but we know why he did it, he was a good guy, but just because this happened once doesn't mean he is a piece of shit all of a sudden. he lost control and he will be left with the consequences. we all seen people lose their shit when they catch their loved one cheating, and some crazy shit happened, love is crazy, and it's also why "crime of passion" is a thing in court. it's a one moment when you do some crazy shit that you'll regret later
ketil and arnheid showed the dynamics between men and women. men are not sure of the paternity that is why the situation escalated
👍👍👍👍👍
It spilled arneed not arnhide😂
Arnhide makes her sound like some of Pokemon or transformer. Its awesome! 😆
@@CarlieAndAnge hahaha but every time he tells her name it caught me off guard
Arhneid's VA was top tier☝...but you know what's sad??, some people are actually defending Ketil saying that what he did was justifiable...it's a lot worse in the manga too, Ketil kept on pressing the stick hardly to Arnheid's belly..I lost all repsect to Ketil after this...I was like "I hope Canute fucks this guy up"
That's why I learned a long time ago to not indulge with the opinions of children (physically or mentally) when it comes to Seinen anime.
Yeah fr i really respected and liked Ketil.
@@nischay4760Spot on my dude. Don't forget the shounen tards as well.
Pls watch the movie YOUR NAME
Arnaid
Ketil was right
She deserves death in my opinion or at least very very hard punishment.
Don't hate me but I gotta say, Arnheid was being a little bit selfish. 😅 Pls, no hate. Is just what I got from here.
you're meant to find her selfish, the problem they've got is that the violence was so extreme that it shocked them.
Literally in what world is it justified to beat a pregnant woman *who is your slave* for the crime of trying to escape enslavement. Are you okay.
Her being partly responsible for the death of those 5 guards is also there, although Ketil clearly didn't care for that.
liked S1 way better, this feels so slow paced and half of the anime was a farming simulator (yeah yeah Character development).
Puny brain thoughts
Farming happened in only some parts of the first 9 episodes as in the start of episode 10 they are done with all the work, even there we had 2 or 3 full Canute episodes and a full Einar first episode before that so its even smaller part of the season, you are just trying to find reasons why you didn't like it but can't come up with anything other then not being interested in actuall character development and trying to mask it as "farming boring"
それが大切なんよ
😶😶
That's fine to have a preference. Some people just prefer slow burn storytelling that focuses on themes and character building so it's not for everyone.
But if you unironically think it's a farming simulator then you weren't paying attention. because only episodes 2 and 6 had a focus on farming.
