    If you do still wanna explore riding with a deployed solar panel you should really look into a lighter weight solution than wood. Something akin to collapsible tent rods would be ideal and with some savy crafting you could possibly just reuse the ones from the tent you're carrying with you anyway.

    I think I would attach the solar panel to the backpack and let it hang behind you. Carbon fiber tent poles could also be used. What a great video. Really enjoyed watching it 😀

    I love your attitude so much, dude. I've watched several of your videos and I really love your problem->idea->failure->solution->compromise->breakthrough->reflection format. I think it's so great how you show your failures in not only how something technically went wrong, but possibly how you may have had an inaccurate mental model of the thing you're trying to do. I think it's all so important and it's truly inspiring to see. Keep doing your thing, Morley. You're great. Just great man. Thanks for letting us all get to know you, and good luck in the future videos.

    Its makes so much sense to have a backpack style case for the batteries and solar panels installed DJI should look into this.

  • @KetansaCreatesArt
    @KetansaCreatesArt 5 місяців тому +2

    Well done. I have few ideas just in case if there is some enthusiasm to continue the project is left even after the dji sponsorship has ended -
    1) Building the 3D object 2% larger would have allowed you to fit it over the carbon fibre fender. No need to remove it, plus double strength. Just get longer screws to fith them both together. EDIT- after watching till the end, I saw it break. So I would suggest you to really keep the original fender, build a fender on top of it using a large pvc water pipe. Shape it using heat g*π. Create cradle for dji unit with similar technique. Or just make slits on it to just run the strap through it and the dji pack is fixed.
    2) Must add 2nd 100watt pannel, stick it side by side on the same wooden structure, letting it stand out more on both sides. Whether you use the overhead bracket or not, two pannels hanging on your backpack will always come useful. And presumably you do not need a backpack anymore after building the pvc pipe fender. You can just strap two pannels together with shoulder straps to carry them on the back.

    Great stuff, as always. I think, with the battery pack in your bag, you might be better off having the solar panels across your shoulders / back as they're curved so they'll still see a lot of sun if they kind of wrapped around your bag ... and you'd be able to get rid a lot of that extra weight from the wooden frame.

    Hey Morley - Here is an idea. Instead of the top heavy canopy approach, get a inflatable bag and shape the solar around the inflatable bag. That way the centre(center) of gravity will be a bit lower and also the extra weight of the wood canopy is reduced aiding in balance.

    I'm a simple man. I see a Morley Kert video, I watch and Like.
    This one was an absolute BANGER bro.
    A few thoughts:
    1. It seems like the onewheel could use more air in the tire, no?
    2. It's worth picking up a cheap welder for like $79 and learning to use it... Good to have on the van, and you could've welded the frame out of aluminum, saving a ton of weight and gaining strength. Though, you might need a proper MIG welder for aluminum, I'm not sure you can stick weld it, haven't tried yet.
    Keep up these projects man, I love them.

    If you can hack the one wheel software like on m365 and ninebot scooters, you can bypass charging mode restrictions. Then you can plug in the charger to the battery bank... And solar to the bank replenishing it (even at a slower rate). Battery bank dies sooner but your range would be significantly increased and when you stop you can charge the bank. Have my scooter set up to either accept a booster pack for an added 12v and about 6-10mph OR a parallel battery pack of the same voltage to increase torque and range. Almost certain you can add a parallel pack to the one wheel for more range and then save the battery bank for emergencies 👍

    I only watched 13 minutes of this video and I can guess that at most you will generate about 30W of power with this thing. The folding panels are not very efficient. you would be better off with a 100W flexible panel from Renogy or SunPower and with that based on the angles you may only get 60W max. The panels need to face the sun completely to be producing rated power.

    you could totally make that solar panel mount less bulky by using like aluminum pipe and the using tension rods to give it the arc (like a tent). Would be much lighter then the wood. Also if you actually wanna charge it while riding theres a few "open source" style one wheel alternatives that would require the stringent rules that one wheel inflicts on its products. (You cant even replace the battery or they will brick themselves). Look up float wheel or superflux.

  • @esk8Kyle
    @esk8Kyle 5 місяців тому

    Ummm I'm an electrical engineer and your power consumption is going far outweigh any solar power u will get. U are better off pulling the battery connector inside the onewheel so that u can plug in external batteries. Have a larger external battery in your backpack and u should be able to get much greater range (and ride time).

    Fibreglass rods would be best for those solar panels. Light, flexible, cheap, and readily available at most hobby stores or specialty kite stores. You could do carbon fibre rods, but the cost does make them problematic.

      you know how they make those aluminum frames for van builders to reduce weight instead of wood ? i wonder if you could 3D print it for even less weight than aluminum would be . it'd be cool to see you test that theory out . of course , it wouldn't be as durable as aluminum - but , definitely more useful if things don't move much bc the plastic will surely bend like the aluminum does . then , again , so does wood . food for thought .

    Could you not make a small Trailer to latch on to the One Wheel that could hold goods & Solar Panel? I think it would take the strain off the motor as not directly on top of the wheel? (Envious guy from Bonnie Scotland)

    With the weight of the panels on your back, I think the battery is best carried in front of your chest like a baby carrier. Hopefully the two weights would offset each other and give you a better balance? Maybe?

    You can make some homemade freeze dried meals that are just as good or better than the store bought ones, and they are significantly cheaper to do. You can incorporate the meats when you're making them for the cheapest option, or buy the prepackaged tuna packets for an easier option that costs a little more. It's still cheaper than the store bought options.

      actual freeze drying machines are still pretty expensive, but you can use a regular cheap dehydrator easily. they have a shorter overall shelf life, but you can put them in the freezer to extent that shelf life almost indefinitely then pull them out as needed.

    Wren from Corridor Crew made a video where he modified his Onewheel to charge while riding it! It involved some electronics, and I believe it voided the warranty, but he was able to do it with a custom built battery!

    I realize you need the sponsor angle, but wouldn't it work just as well not carrying around a big extra battery and just charging the smaller internal battery directly? If it's one of those that won't let you operate it while charging, you can fix that by bypassing the charging port input and hooking up directly to the BMS (may also require changing out the BMS but a suitable one can be had for about $20-30).

    Maybe if the frame for everything were attached to the mode of locomotion, so you don't have to carry it on your back, and then maybe another wheel for stability, and then you could make some way to add in your own energy to help it out for those steep hills. Might as well have some kind of gearing system to change impedence between your output and the kind of terrain. Might even be able to mount the whole thing to the back of the van.
