      Whilst you were pretending to eat meat with expensive, highly processed, high-petroleum usage plant fractions, I had a delicious, nutrient-dense Philly cheesesteak made from venison backstrap harvested in my front yard, and provolone cheese made from my own cattle. And with excellent cholesterol ratios, a CAC at 0 and great bone density with no degradation, my supper was waste free, package free and carbon neutral, and earth and body friendly.

    Good to see you promoting Avi, would be great to see a collaboration (Avi has already reached out to you, FYI), as there are shared interests, and his channel needs to grow. You may also want to join study Archives, Avi’s server. All of this information is neatly sorted in there (along with plenty of other stuff), so there are basically tons of highly detailed debunks just sitting there waiting to be given attention by someone with the platform and interest (he isn’t at all protective of his content, just wants the ideas to get out, I’m sure you can take your pick). But you might not wanna talk to him about moral realism or he’ll bring you to the dark side..

    I definitely enjoy these videos about nutrition studies, as well as information about how to get the nutrients we need on a vegan diet. I was vegan and felt terrible so I started consuming animal products again because I had no information about how to eat properly (and I *was* having some protein with every meal). Slowly I'm going back into veganism but I'm trying to pay more attention to my body and keeping an eye on my diet on days/weeks I don't feel so well, to see what I can tweak without going back to animal products.

    So glad you talked about calcium and vitamin D. I’m recovering from a foot fracture. The first thing my orthopedic surgeon said when I saw him was “let’s test your vitamin D levels (he didn’t know I was vegan or not). I was shocked that I had a vitamin D deficiency! He said that was a huge factor in breaking my foot - that and being clumsy. 😆. He said it’s very common, especially in women. I was always concerned that I was getting calcium, but didn’t think about vitamin D.

    • @HaruTheGyaru

      Yeah unless you supplement, pretty much everyone has low vitamin D levels. I live somewhere very sunny and I still have to supplement! I take one 10,000 iu D3 every week cause I'd just forget to take a lower dose daily lol. My levels were are at 30 ng/mL last time I got checked which I believe is pretty good.

    So I quickly read through the paper and the thing that jumped out at me is that they don't actually have any measure of bone density, which is obviously directly correlated with fractures. They cite previous studies reporting lower bone density in vegans and vegetarians, but actually connecting the bone density with the fractures and the fracture locations would have been more informative and more interpretable, in my opinion.

    • @heidih3048
      @heidih3048 3 роки тому

      Isn't it obvious that lower bone density would correlate with greater incidence of fractures? A less dense bone is a more easily fractured bone.

    • @peachyykeen80
      @peachyykeen80 3 роки тому +2

      @@heidih3048 It is obvious that lower bone density would lead to more susceptibility to fractures, but having the correlating reduced bone density would be more informative about the fractures, rather than just diet and fractures as independent variables. They could also have reported the accompanying activity that led to the fractures to potentially address this point. As it is now, all things are equal, but a slip leading to a fractured hip is different than falling off a bike or getting hit by a car. Right now, all they can say is that vegans may be more prone to specific location fractures, but they can't directly link those fractures to diet induced reduction in bone density.

    To comment on your note regarding yoga just to “tone”, it is actually a really good weight bearing exercise. Better even for your upper body than lifting traditional hand weights because you are using your full body weight to balance your entire body with your arms or 1 leg at times. I actually increased my BMD score in my wrists just doing yoga. I am an X-Ray Tech and did the Bone Density scans on patients for our clinic, so I was getting measurements on myself yearly even though I was in my early 30s. Yoga gets a bad rap for just being “stretching”, but there’s much more to it. You work muscles that you don’t normally get in traditional workout methods and in different ways, so it’s very beneficial even to body builders to incorporate it into your routine.

    I’m a little concerned about absorbability of some of the calcium supplements added to the nut milks, and confused about which is better. I have osteoporosis and it’s very confusing and hard to trust that the supplemented nut milk calcium is absorbing well. Also, i would never take a calcium supplement without the accompanying other vitamins / minerals. It’s best to take a bone formula with vitamin K 2 7 in my opinion. I read the K2 7 is another very important supplement to take with calcium to absorb well. It’s a complex topic, yet very important! Please don’t ignore keeping track of your calcium. I’m paying the price. I’m really fragile and now have a rebuilt shoulder two metal plates and pins in my body plus hospital bills through the roof. Within 4 years, a broken wrist, broken leg, disk fractures, rebuilt shoulder! And the worst part is, that these came from little accidents where I shouldn’t have broken anything. I’ve also developed a phobic fear about falling, tripping or slipping on winter ice. It’s just exhausting watching every step. Its too dangerous to ride my bike anymore too. I’m so sad. And I’m never really healed, I have nerve damage and constant pain in my one arm & shoulder, plus chronic back pain. Osteoporosis is silent and you’d never know until it’s too late. I’ve always been thin & very active, and thought I watched my diet well. I never dreamt this would happen to me. I finally got a bone scan that confirmed. Be careful. Calcium and it’s absorption is very important!

    Dr. Greger has excellent videos on calcium in a vegan diet.
    Osteoporosis and osteopenia have more to do with inadequate vitamin D, low vitamin K, and low physical activity, than it does with calcium intake. The body doesn't actually need alot of calcium. Half your bones are made of protein, not calcium.

    Bone health depends on only two factors. The first is getting enough protein which means .36 grams of protein for each pound of body weight before the age of 65 and .48 grams per pound of body weight after the age of 65. Bones are build on a protein matrix from which calcium hangs. If you don't have a strong protein matrix the calcium has nothing to cling to. It's like a home, if the frame isn't solid the siding will simply fall away. Eat your beans and you'll get these levels without a problem. The 2nd and just as important is reducing daily sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day. Excess sodium causes the bones to leach calcium and dramatically ups the requirement for calcium. Stop the sodium and getting just 500 mg of calcium per day will be plenty. The reason so many vegans have bad bones is not eating plenty of beans and lentils and eating so much vegan junk food that their sodium intake is way above even omnivores in the US.

I struggled reading the research but I don't remember reading anything about it. It should be noted in the statistical analysis that making that assumption creates huge error margins. And I wouldn't be surprised that if they would they wouldn't archieve statistical significance. In other words, the conclusion might not hold if they redo the statical analysis.

    You say "what have we learned - virtually nothing" but then follow it up with 3 min of what to take away. It seems to me that you and other well educated vegans allready know these things but a lot of vegans dont. If the study sheds some light on these issues, its a good thing, isn't it?
    Also: i dont think the study wanted to show the effects of a "perfect vegan diet" but the effects of the diet of some random vegan people, of which some are very close to a good vegan diet and some are not. As to be expected in real life. The sample-size is of course not representative and there is some other issues. But the results still have some value.
    Love the channel and your style of reasoning though! Best regards

      @michelle case She doesn't commit a "reverse appeal to nature" (Like that's not even a thing) nor does she promote "the artifical path" lol, these are strawmans of her stance. There are things that are good for you and things that are bad for you, and it's evidence that can tell us which is which. Science does not point to "nature being the answer", that IS the appeal to nature fallacy. Natural things that are good, are good because there's evidence that they are good, not because they're natural. Likewise lots of man-made things are good for you, yet lots of natural things are bad for you.

      @maggiep6605 3 роки тому

      No, it's flawed because the methodology is very limited, because any nutrition research is very difficult to do, and because typically you need a study like this to get funding for a more in depth study. Also news sites suck at reporting the nuances of scientific studies since that doesn't make a good headline.

Blame the system that values beauty at any cost, not the ones who have to partake in it in order to not be discriminated against. Older women are shamed enough by society for the natural process of aging without another woman swooping in and shaming them further. That comment made me embarrassed FOR you. What a pickme comment to make.

      Thorne multi is a multi that is comprehensive for vegans. They are tested and score well through third party organizations to ensure you’re getting what they say you are, which is important since the supplement industry is not well regulated. They’re going to cost you more than your run of the mill otc multi, though. They don’t test on animals and have a seemingly good environmental and ethical foundation, so I always appreciate that.

    Not statistically significant. So many meaningless stats being published or meaningful stats which should be 1 percent of the data you need to conclude anything. Sometimes you use lin reg just because the data isn’t going to let you do anything else which gives you statistically significant results. So, lack of a log reg when a log reg is expected is usually indication that the data wasn’t presenting an exponential relationship. That’s troubling if you know the universe has an exponential relationship. But they throw out all of the truly meaningless crap and publish the rest and expect you to know what is noise and what isn’t.
