Dont feed a cat a vegan diet. Cats are obligate carnivores and it is cruel to force them to your own moral beliefs. Simple fix: dont get a cat. There are plenty of herbivores that need rescuing too: rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.

Vegan pets like rabbits and guinea pigs are actually a lot of work to care for, and I'm disabled, so I think a cat is my better option.

This is absolutely correct. Cats cannot live a healthy life eating a vegan or vegetarian diet, period. By forcing a cat to be vegan, you're engaging in the very practices in which you, as a vegan, are trying to not participate. It's a special kind of cruelty to slowly kill a cat by depriving it of what it needs to live.

Dogs don't do too well on vegan diets either, they're omnivores but are not supposed to eat just grass and grains. People need to follow their vet's recommendations how to feed their animal or just re-home it if it doesn't fit their current lifestyle. As dog and bird owner, birds are also cool af, technically omnivores but they strive on a herbivore diet unlike dogs.

My parents own a few chickens in their backyard, and like my grandparents, they don't throw away the shells. The eggshells are collected and then fed to the chickens. It is also important that the shells are heated and chrushed up so that the chickens do not notice that they used to be their own eggs, which could then possibly lead to them destroying their own eggs

I usually agree with you, but I really can't get behind feeding cats a vegan diet, or even dogs. I would never. One of the major principals of Veganism is not forcing human selfishness on animals. Feeding them a diet, that is yes, unnatural for them- is a prime example of humans forcing their "selfishness" on a non-consenting being. It's one thing for you to personally consent to a different lifestyle, but forcing that on your pet, a pet that is completely reliant on you, is cruel.

    • @merrymachiavelli2041

? She wasn't saying that you should feed cats a vegan diet, and her point with dogs is that you have to be very careful. More broadly though, Food is ultimately just chemistry - if you _could_ theoretically meet the nutritional needs of a cat or a dog without meat, that would be great, it's just practically difficult to do. 'Naturalness' is completely irrelevant - as long as it tastes good, I doubt the cat or dog would care. What matters is whether they are happy and healthy, not whether they are meeting a natural purity test.
      -

Vet student here currently taking an intro nutrition course.
Cats are *obligate carnivores* meaning they need to eat meat. It is *not an option* for them to be on any other diet.
Dogs are *omnivores* (or sometimes labelled as non-obligate carnivores because they need more meat than some other omnivores like humans). However, *if a dog is sick they need to be on a carnivore diet* because any other diet just won't cut it.
I think this is very important to know because a lot of people think dogs are the same as humans and will do perfectly fine on a vegan diet but they still require a lot more protein than humans and there are certain essential nutrients dogs need to survive that are very difficult to get if they are not eating animal products. There's a reason why there are no vet-approved vegan diets.
If you are adamant about having your dog be vegan, you need to talk to a vet nutritionist and you have most likely have to add supplements to their diet or else it could cause some serious harm down the line and be sure to look for brands that say "complete and balanced". This means it has been tested and deemed a balanced diet by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Edit: there are many diets I've seen, homemade or manufactured that are seriously concerning and dangerous due to the lack of essential nutrients (essential meaning they NEED it to survive!!)

" obligate carnivore" is a statement about natural occurring nutrition. It simply means no homemade combination of vegetables and grains will be nutritionally adequate or healthy. this does not mean that an industrially produce, nutritionally fortified vegan food is not possible. Current information would indicate things like adding chemically produced taurine, and removing compounds responsible for urine acidification and kidney stone formation. This is certainly very feasible with modern nutritional science, it is simply that the profit motivated market dynamics prevents their existence . "Grain free" is more of a (very successful) marketing term than anything when it comes to pet food, because the data is really lacking. There's no reliable evidence that shows that a diet void of grains would be better for dogs or cats. What's important is that it's a well nutritionally balanced food and that your cat is getting enough water(sometimes not the case if they get dry food). I'll of course remain skeptical towards vegan catfood until the day there is data that proves it's fine, but I don't think you need to worry about there being a little bit of grain in the pet food.

    • @leonkande1996
      @leonkande1996 3 роки тому +14

@@KattReen A good cat food shouldn't contain any grain, as it serves no nutritional value for cats.
Meat, small amount of veggies, maybe herbs. Grain is cheap and is used as a filler in cat foods.
Cats are obligate carnivores, they're not able to fully digest grain. Additionally, it can cause obesity, diabetes, liver and kidney failure in kitties.
Dogs on the other hand, are omnivores so they can digest grain and vegetables better than cats; but still, high percentage of grain is not beneficial, it should be an addition, not the base of the kibble/wet food.

"Are all “by-products” bad? Not at all, in fact, we eat them! By definition and regulation, by-products are the non-meat parts of chicken, beef, pork, etc. after the meat has been removed. However, by-products are NOT feathers, beaks, fur hooves, or teeth. Examples include animal fats and clean internal organs - pork, chicken, and beef liver, heart and kidneys. All these items have nutritious value and are often preferred over muscle meat by animals. Other examples are treats we commonly give our pets - bully sticks, raw hides, pig’s ears, cow hooves, trachea, and lamb lung. By-products are a valuable source of energy, vitamins, and minerals. And while it may sound good to feed your pet a meat-only diet, muscle meat alone is deficient in many nutrients, which could lead to poor growth, bone fractures, and loose teeth."

I really like your videos and agree with you on many topics BUT the cat things is really really bad. Please don’t tell people to feed cats low quality food. It’s awful for their health, you are putting them at risk of obesity, kidney failure and protein deficiency. Cats have short digestive system so feeding them grains is basically letting them starve because they are not able to digest any of the food (other than the animal byproducts) properly. Cats are not vegan and shouldn’t be forced to, don’t get a cat if you want to mistreat it like that, there are plenty of herbivorous animals you can keep as a pet.

  • @Uneclipsed

Okay, true, just because something is natural doesn't mean it's okay or necessarily healthy, but in a scientific context, cats need taurine--an amino acid they cannot produce--which is something they only get through eating. Taurine is only found in animals, specifically organ meat. Birds, mice, and rabbits are all high in taurine. There is no plant source for taurine. All cat food should be supplemented with taurine. As far as protein goes, cats do not absorb plant proteins efficiently, and legumes often cause GI issues in cats. You as a human vegan person get to decide what to eat and what supplements to take. Cats do not get a choice. Feeding your cat a vegan diet is dooming them to a short, malnourished life, which is cruel. It's not just about natural vs. unnatural with cats. If you cannot justify feeding your cat what it needs to be healthy because our pet food industry is messed up then just like, don't have a cat. I don't know why this is so hard.

    • @jacobcarmen5861

Cat food *is* supplemented with taurine, because contrary to what you wrote, taurine is easily synthesized from totally vegan sources. It is completely possible to feed a cat a healthy 'vegan' diet *IN PRINCIPLE*, which is exactly what she said in the video. In practice, the vegan cat food brands that are available are small batch, inconsistent, and suspect, and it is known that some (specifically male) cats suffer from urinary tract diseases as a result of the alkalinity in such diets. Therefore, as she says in the video, she does NOT recommend that cats are fed a vegan diet. She would not do that. When she had a cat, she did not do that. She hopes that future developments in in vitro meat production will lead to the possibility of a practical, safe, and healthy vegan diet for cats. I don't know why this is so hard.

Most veterinarians wouldn’t recommend a vegan diets for cats, simply because there hasn’t been enough research done to completely say yes, but would absolutely recommend a vegan diet for dogs as long as it’s a well balanced diet. Taurine can be found in both animals and plants. But if you really want to change a diet of a pet speak to Veterinarians, if you express hey I don’t trust the food that are sold in the store, they can help you with a homemade diet that will allow your pet to thrive. If something is a carnivore..you can't just "change the diet." Obligate or "true" carnivores are those whose diet requires nutrients found only in animal flesh. While obligate carnivores might be able to ingest small amounts of plant matter, they lack the necessary physiology required to fully digest it. Why BIG CATS eat meat like lions, tigers, etc.
It would be like feeding deer meat and expecting them to "change" their diet. A herbivore is an animal that gets its energy from eating plants, and only plants. Omnivores can also eat parts of plants, but generally only the fruits and vegetables produced by fruit-bearing plants. Many herbivores have special digestive systems that let them digest all kinds of plants, including grasses. Please do research and understand.
An omnivore (/ˈɒmnɪvɔːr/) is an animal that has the ability to eat and survive on both plant and animal matter. Obtaining energy and nutrients from plant and animal matter, omnivores digest carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber, and metabolize the nutrients and energy of the sources absorbed. Like bears for example.
So no. You can't change something from being a carnivore to a herbivore. They are born and are design that way, don't vegan a cat. If people are for animals then why on earth would you vegan a cat when it's a carnivore and they can only get nutrient from animals. Isn't the animal abuse? Yes because you can't make carnivore vegan without killing them. I hate vegans who do this because it shows they do it for own selfish beliefs of WHAT ANIMALS should be and don't care for actual animals. I love snakes but I would never own one because I couldn't feed it mice/rats and it would be so selfish of me to force them to eat fruits.

I went back to eating animal products because I've always had a bad history with food. I binge eat a lot and I easily can fixate on food and I have many trigger foods that can be brought up and I will be fixating on it for a week. Having a dietary restriction made that worse. Having this mental restriction really set me off as I would start going on quests to find what was the junk food I could have. I was more worried about which chips contained milk than I did about having a balanced diet. Almost all my trigger foods contained meat and sometimes I would drive up to chick-fil-a and order 4 chicken sandwiches 2 fries and 2 sweet teas because I didn't want them to think I was that much of a fat ass. I spent and ate so much fast food in secret because I was ashamed but surprisingly, not for the fact that I was downing 5k calories of taco bell in one sitting, but because I lying to myself and the people around me about being plant based. Now don't get me wrong, I wanted to cut this shit out, but food addiction + binge eating makes it so hard to have any sense if control. I came to the realization that this sense if restriction made it me feel more tense and more likely to get triggered and having a binging episode. So when people ask me why I'm not vegan or plant based or whatever anymore, I just worry that if I tell them that "I've been dealing with an eating disorder all my life and I need to get that in order before I can make any major dietary changed" because if they invalidate it (which they have a right to, it's their opinion) I'm worried that it will put me closer to another binge spiral. In fact, if you get into the crowd that fights on labor issues in meat packing plants, you will find some extremely wonderful and kind-hearted people. I once talked to a guy who worked in a meat packing plant who seemed psychologically distraught and damaged by the killing of the animals he saw every day, but his feelings of responsibility to support his family and to work hard kept him from discussing or exploring his trauma too much. Also, this might have been touched upon in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle--that the killing of animals is just as horrible a part of the job as the labor issues that book discussed.
The other person I know right now who is working at a meat packing plant took the job because it was the only thing she could get super quickly. I think a lot of immigrants work at these places also because the jobs are available and you can get them. So, it can also be about getting money now.

Where I live vegan pet food is not accessible (and I wouldn’t feed cats vegan food anyway) and I do find it’s cruel to feed them plants, I try to stick to fish based pet food, I find it the best option. Two other things I disagree with are “vegans shouldn’t eat honey or wear wool”. If it’s ethically sourced why not? I mean beekeepers are actually doing a good thing by providing shelter for the bees...and sheep, if they exist they need shearing (goats do too actually depending on the climate and the breed). My family had sheep at some point (no, we never ate them they died of old age, my parents didn t like the milk or cheese either) and they definetely need shearing. My grandmother used to make bed covers and such using the wool, what’s so wrong about that? Genuine questions, I like UV very much for questioning parts of the “vegan Bible” and for understanding that people have different situations and can’t be as strict as others even if they’d like to be.

    • @danz9093
      @danz9093 2 роки тому

For vegan mentality, the Bees are making honey for themselves and their babies, not us. When we intervene, we are exploiting them. We are taking them out of the wild typically speaking out using them solely for our purposes. Check out how much honey a beehive naturally creates vs how much we consume.
For wool, whilst it is true farmed sheep need shearing, they have been selectively bred over centuries to do this... they naturally would shed their wool. So, by buying wool, you continue demand for this selectively bred species to be exploited by humans. As the rise in veganism will be gradual, so too will the decrease in demand for such products, therefore, the selectively bred (sub)species will die out and leave you with the "true" wild animals that are still a part of a naturally occurring ecosystem.
Same with dairy and milk. Selectively bred... typically much worse conditions despite some places being great, and unnecessary for contemporary human survival. And typically their lifespan is MUCH shorter than it would be naturally. This is all based on averages and generalisations... of course there will be exceptions to the rule and anecdotal stories like that of your family.
My partner and my grandparents have similar stories about dairy cows, but that's not how it works in a vast majority of circumstances in our contemporary global society.

I would say the same with honey... used sparingly from a hive you tend to isn't really an issue. I would even go so far as to say if people only ate what they hunted, there would be such better treatment of animals, no need for commercial agriculture, still very little meat eaten (as outlined in this video, the health differences between a 100% plant-based diet and predominantly plant-based diet is neglible)... of course, not everyone would hunt, and as animal consumption became less commonly accepted, fewer and fewer people would do it. I used to when I was much younger but haven't done it for decades and certainly wouldn't feel right doing it now... Fun fact, the female body can only absorb (on average) 30g per every 3-4 hours. If a female eats above that in one meal, it is simply excreted in the urine.... so, unless one has pre existing issues, they probably don’t have to worry about getting “too much”.

I agree with everything. I can't watch more vegan documentaries after 3 years of my dietetics education because they are just annoying and full of crap for me. Can't watch some youtube channels too anymore. And yes, a lot of vegan parents don't know how to feed their childreen because they get their nutrition advice from youtube and not from reputable sources or dietitans. Then we, dietitians and dietitian wannabes, have to explain to everyone (teachers, other angry moms, people on the internet, other health professionals, doctors and older dietitian college professors) that a vegan diet ''works'' for ''that kid'', the problem was just that the parents were clueless on nutrition knowledge and the kid was missing some things. Also folks, get your protein, get your lysine AND leucine people. Don't just eat half a cup of beans here and there. Don't just make pasta with vegetables only for dinner on a regular basis. If you're not sedentary, you will need more than 1.2g/kg. Vegan doctors say ''there is no medical term for protein deficient and you can get enough by just eating enough calories''. Yes, there is. Is called kwashiorkor. Eating suboptimal levels of protein is a thing, you may not get kwashiorkor because it's rare, but it's important to eat enough, like any other nutrient.

Vegan documentaries are incredibly cringy to anyone who took just a single science class in uni. The majority of them claim some bullshit how you can cure your cancer or diabetes if you go on this magical diet and it's not a good look for people who eat plant based at all.
And as someone who underate protein for years and felt like major crap, it totally happens and if you're generally not knowledgeable about nutrition it's super easy to fall into the rabbit hole of pasta and veggies and hummus is a decent protein source.

as someone who has worked with animals for almost 10 years and has multiple credentials in animal nutrition, I just wanted to give my 2 cents on vegan diets for cats and dogs. Both cats and dogs are carnivores, cats being obligate and dogs being facultative. It’s already fairly widely known that vegan diets can be detrimental to cats so I won’t beat the dead horse talking about it, but just because a dog can eat an entirely plant based diet does not mean that that dog is thriving off it. Dogs are a scavenging species and are able to survive (not thrive) off of non-species appropriate foods if that is all that’s available to them. Even if dogs were true omnivores like they are thought to be, that means that they still require animal-based foods in order to thrive.
It’s also disappointing hearing you say that the foods we should be feeding our pets are the value brands with grains and poor quality animal products just to ensure the animal isn’t wasted, as these foods are also not designed for your pet to thrive off of. There are brands who source humanely and sustainably sourced animal products where the animal doesn’t suffer nearly as much as the bargain brand animals do, while still using up majority of the animal in their food product (by products are not bad for pets, but the quality of the by product makes a massive difference). Bargain brands often use diseased and highly rendered animal products that do not live good lives, and ultimately that is what you’re supporting if you purchase that for your animal (let alone feed that to them…)

i get super depressed watching her channel, she uses sooo many vegan products that simply don't exist in my country. it's like, what's even the point of watching her channel if i'm never going to be able to recreate one of her recipes?
