    Gable didn't always get the top ranked, blue chip recruits. He got a lot of tough, home-grown Iowa kids that he built into champs. Even though Iowa is known for the conditioning and grinding style, it wasn't just that. He was organized and had a system for developing wrestlers. I read once that he was a big fan of John Wooden and his coaching philosophy. For that, I'd give the nod to Gable (for now)
    I don't know exactly what Cael is doing, (that should be a topic of a future video, Josiah) he is definitely a private man, but he is turning out relaxed, happy, peak performance wrestlers. Some of the intense types of coaches have a lot of banged-up, burnt-out wrestlers come late March. Behind that quiet facade is a smart, creative, trustworthy leader.

      To be fair, wrestling was different back in the day. There wasn’t the emphasis on training year round like there is now and many wrestlers didn’t travel the country to wrestle at the biggest tournaments like they do now. That’s why I think what Cael has done is incredible, he gets blue chip recruits but normally all of them turn out to be stars. All the other schools get the same level of recruits and are still so far behind.

      @@nategalvan3907 I guess Cael can’t do much to change that. All I am saying is that the recruits are on a much more level playing field coming into college these days, most of whom are already very developed. Yet, Cael seems to transform and elevate his wrestlers in a way the other coaches haven’t been able to. For example, nick lee was a big recruit but I think no one pegged him to have the amazing career he has had. On the other hand, Chad red was a top 3 recruit in high school and most people thought he would be a multiple time champ and he even beat nick lee in high school. We all have seen how nick lee has evolved as opposed to red.

    I like how Sanderson prepares his team at the end of season but I only can think about possibly how much more competitive the college wrestling scene was back in the 80s and 90s. Meaning much more division I programs and talent spread at the time. Might have been relatively more difficult to cultivate a program into a dynasty compared to today.

      I would disagree with the statement that wrestling was more competitive in the 80s and 90s. Yes there were more programs but the talent today is far more elite. Back then you could take an average wrestler and make them good. IMO it’s more difficult to take a great wrestler and make them super elite, which is what Cael excels at most. Can't argue with either for what they've done for the sport and their respected institutions. If I had to pick one it would be Cael because of how quickly he turned a PSU program that he inherited which was coming off a 8-12-2 season and placing #17 at NCAAs into a 17-1-1 team that finished #1 at NCAAs in two years. His story has many chapters left and at the end of the day it will be much easier decision than it is now.

Dan Gable inherited an Iowa program coming off 2 consecutive NCAA National championship teams with 17-0-1 and 14-1 records. Iowa wrestling had already arrived when he took over. Now he still had to drive the bus and he did an unbelievable job doing it but when Cael came to State College - PSU was an afterthought on the wrestling landscape and within two years they were National Champs and off to the races. Both great resumes but the tipping point for me is turning a program around and being able to maintain that dominance which points back to coaching.

    Here are some facts for everyone. first Cael as a head coach didnt win a championship for his first 4 years, Gable didnt win in his first year 1977. Cael then won 4 straight dropped to 6th for a year, won 4 more dropped to second the won another title. Gable won 9 consecutive from 1978 to 1986. To put into perspective, Cael won 9 titles in 15 years, Gable won 9 in 10 years. Cael has 6 more years in which he has to win titles every year to amass the same 15 titles in 21 years as head coach. Heres another happy fact, Gable started at Iowa as an assistant coach under Gary Kurdelmeier in 1972 after winning an olympic gold for which he is still the only wrestler to finish the olympics without giving up a single point. Back to assistant coaching started in 72, they wont 2 titles in 1975 and 1976 with gable as an assistant before he tool the helm. So if you factor that in he was actually instrumental in winning 17 titles. If you work the timeline thats 17 titles in 24 years as either an assistant or head coach. My analysis is the same will soon happen to Cael that happened to Gable, His wrestlers are starting to coach elsewhere and will soon be highly sought after for head coaching positions so his own coaching style he will be facing and just like with Gable the number of schools that can attract the top talent will grow and your ability to pull the brightest stars will diminish and those championships will become harder fought than they are now. If Gable hadnt retired after 24 seasons in a coaching role who knows where he would have ended up. I remember Harold Nichols of ISU coaching from wheel chair. Another fun fact here for wrestling fans: why didnt Gable wind up coaching at his alma mater ISU? He was there working out and trying to prepare for the olympics and he needed some athletic tape and they made him buy a roll. They didnt see very interested and didnt pursue heavily, he went for a interview and workout session at Iowa and asked for some tape they gave him a roll. When he mentioned that ISU wouldnt even give him a roll they gave him a case of tape to help him get thru the olympics and the rest is history.

  • @ianshue2890
    @ianshue2890 Рік тому

    For anyone who reads this, this is long and I go into a lot of detail with my opinion
    There’s a few reasons I’m picking Gable. For one thing, just bottom line he is more dominant so far. Once he got to Iowa, Iowa was damn well near the top, and little to no one could beat them. And I can guarantee that to this day, no coach has pushed their athletes more than Gable, that’s why all his athletes had such good conditioning. He won 15 team national championships, and 21 big ten championships, so he won the big tens every year. Those stats aren’t to be taken lightly.
    People say how Cael is able to bring his athletes to a new level coming into NCAA’s, and that was on clear display in the 2021 championships as the Nittamy Lions evolved, and the Hawkeyes didn’t, some even downgraded like Michael Kemerer. But Gable made one of the biggest transformations to a team that anyone has ever made. They won 8 national championships in a row coming into the season of 1985-1986. The team got cocky, didn’t work as hard as they normally, and they were starting to get some holes. When they wrestled Iowa State who was really tough at the time, Iowa got exposed. A few weeks later the NCAA’s would happen and Gable transformed the team so much, they broke just about every record that night. The most points scored (and back when points were worth less), biggest point margin, most pins, and was the first team to get 5 individual national champions. Especially in the 80s where wrestling was more mainstream and tough, that’s amazing.
    But the one thing that Gable could do as a coach of which I’ve still not seen with Cael is that he could take a normal everyday wrestler who wasn’t a good athlete or the best wrestler, and turn them into a force. He did it with Brad Penrith, Brooks Simpson, Tom Ryan, and many other people. At any other school, those guys probably wouldn’t even make the varsity line up. But when they went to Iowa, not only did they wrestle, the mental toughness, conditioning and just knowledge that Gable gave them was enough for them to wrestle with anybody. Cael to this day has not done that. In fact a lot of the recruits Cael gets is highly accomplished high school wrestlers, and sometimes they don’t even make the cut. Gable at times took people who were only like a 1x state champion, or not even a state champion, and he would turn them into a D1 wrestler
    I know Iowa gets a bad rap from wrestling fans because they say they go to extremes with certain things, but the fans they have are crazy for a reason, and Dan Gable is most certainly one of those biggest reasons

    Both great coaches but gotta give edge right now to Gable. Cael wasn't great at Iowa State but did much better only after he moved out east and got best picks from eastern seaboard states. So how much is it recruiting and how much of it is coaching? I know Gable took alot of kids that weren't high recrits and turned them into national champs. Not sure Cael can say the same.

    Gable was dominant in a time that top coaches had a monopoly on recruits, training facilities, international experience. Not to say that he wasn't a great coach but more ahead of his time. Brands benefitted from Iowa's and gables reputation for a few years but the truth of his coaching abilities are finally showing. Brands is no gable as we have seen. Cael is the new gable during a time when more schools are drawing better recruits and more coaches have many more resources to be great coaches. Cael is still dominating in a more even playing field for all programs. Two different situations, but Sanderson pretty damn impressive so far! Time will tell...........but yes, cael is better

      The recruits have changed as well kids patterned themselves after Gable from and early age that tough mean in your face style, high school coaches were the same way and getting into matches yelling at the ref and the wrestler on the mat was common place. That started changing the end of Gables time coaching kids didnt repsond to having their face slapped to get them pumped up today mommy would call the cops if your coach yelled at you. Cael seems to have figured out how to work well in the new confines and Tom and Terry are still living in Gables shadow.

As for getting top recruits, there was no such thing has top recruits because high school athletes were lesser developed. It’s impossible to compare era’s. I see a lot of comments saying Gable did more with less. No way to prove that. The sport is completely different. There are way less teams today. That changes everything. Less teams to beat but more competition for the top kids. There are so many variables. All you can do is look at their record which gives Gable the edge for now. Ask this question in 5-7 years and my answer will be Sanderson.

    • @scottborkowski4487
      @scottborkowski4487 2 роки тому

      I keep seeing this same comment but let me bring a little something to your attention for Cael to beat gables number of NCAA championships in the same time frame would have to win 6 more titles in the next 5 years he only has 9 and just finished his 16th year coaching Gable had 15 in 21 as a head coach but if you count in his assistant coaching time at iowa i comes out to 17 titles in 25 years, Cael has been assistant and head for 19 seasons he would need 8 titles in the next 6 years to tie that one. I have not doubt he will pass Gables number of individual champs by his 21st year, he may also beat the number of titles at an ncaa tournemt but that is a tall order to champ more that half your team. He could beat the number of times of getting 5 champs at ncaas both have 5 twice, It is highly unlikely you will see Gables 170 points at the ncaa tournament fall. Possible but thats another very tall order especially given the climate in wrestling today and the number of schools that are right there seriously vying for a title every year.

      @@mikef9126 titles as an assistant should count because if gable hadnt started as and assistant at the same time that kurdelmeier moved up to head coach iowa would most likely not have won those titles in 75 and 76 together they built a program in 2 years and then started winning it shows the impact that each had even before being a head coach. Iowa was in the pits before gable arrived. If you read the comment i was answering to you might understand this relevance. It seems everyone just simply forgets caels time at ISU 3 years assistant and 3 years head before going to psu as if those years didnt count however gable taking over after helping build a national championship team for 4 years, losing 1 year then going on to win 9 consecutive. Thats another point that makes gable the goat as a coach. You realize there are only 3 programs in history that have put together 9 consecutive titles one was tennis, one golf and gable wrestling. Cael hasnt put together 5 straight yet. You argue that its harder to win one now than it was then, hmmm let me see I seem to remember a time that Iowa, ISU, and Northern Iowa were ranked 1.2.5 respectively and the battles between no 1 iowa and no2 ISU were epic and then there was always Oklahoma St right there knocking as well and there were great wrestlers hacking away at the tournament just like there are today. Then you cant ignore Bobby Douglas at AZ st before he went to ISU. He gave gable run for several years, of course there was the Jim Gibbons era at ISU when then were evenly matched with Iowa and came in 2nd and 3rd most years until they actually bumped Iowa off in 1987 and won the NCAA title that broke the streak and kept Gable from getting 10 straight. I would say that wrestlling was as competitive if not more between the top 3 than it is now.

Numbers wise he may pass gable but numerically he cant pass gables wins in 21 years of coaching even allowing for the covid year the very best he can do is tie.
