The 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships start Thursday, and there's no better way to kick off the hype than with predictions. Between Spencer Lee, Roman Bravo-Young, Yianni Diakomihalis and the rest, this is who I think WILL win national titles this year.

3 national champs at 165 is insane, I got Sugar Shane pulling off multiple shocks and coming out on top! He just comes alive at this tournament and he was also the 8th seed when he won it. I think the idea of taking out Carr AND O’Toole will fuel him.

I love that you love Andonian! He's super exciting to watch and I'd love it if he won. But, I'm bewildered as to why you dismissed Levi Haines so easily. He took Peyton out at B1Gs and has Cael behind him. He's got to be the one to watch. Besides, as much as I love Andonian, he gives up those singles too easily and then relies on extended scrambles to get a takedown, which is why he tires by the 3rd. Andonian wins if he scores tons of points in the 1st and 2nd, forcing opponents to catch up in the 3rd. But I don't see him doing that to Peyton or Levi. I say Haines and Brooks will prove you wrong.

Ya, I gotta agree with you. Although I would love to see Andonian-Haines early fireworks, I think O'Connor will win it all at 57

125: Spencer Lee easily wins his 4th title in 6 years in a weak weight class and finishes his career as one of Iowa's top 5 all-time wrestlers with a 100-5 career record.
133: Roman Bravo Young finds a way to beat the excellent Dayton Fix for a 3rd straight title. I could see this going the other way.
141: Real Woods easily dominates his way to the title.
149: Yianni Diakomihalis, the nation's best college wrestler, easily wins his fourth title
157: Peyton Robb knocks off Levi Haines in the finals
165: Carr wins again; he looks amazing
174: Starocci is like an Abrams Tank. I don't love his style but he isn't getting beat.
184: Brooks is the 2nd best wrestler in the tournament after Yianni. Title #3 for the bible thumper over Hidlay.
    197: Elam over Dean
285: Kerkvliet, wrestling with 1 ACL as he has his entire college career, finds a way to turn the 22-23 tide over Parris and takes a win and finishes with a 4-3 career college record against the beastly Wolverine.

Everything you predict is a yawner and the odds-on pick except Parris. And Parris is a heavyweight, which is boring, pushing, grunting wrestling. Heavy is a showdown between Parris, Penn St, Arizona St, and Air Force. Air Force was a high seed last year and blew up right away. The only likely outlier is Schultz. Things never go to chalk in wrestling. You are King Chalk. 🥱

    • @Kilty007

@@tommyrq180 Yawner? Odds on picks? Really?? Where are you getting your information? Fix could easily win 133 and I said as much. Alirez is the favorite to beat Woods at 141 (but I picked Woods) and O'Connor is undefeated and favored at 157 as the #1 seed (but I didn't pick him to land in the finals). Brooks I picked to win b/c I honestly do feel he's the 2nd best overall wrestler in college but I wouldn't be surprised if he lost to Hidlay. And I picked the favorite at HWT to lose. Yawner? That's four of ten weights. Let's see your picks my friend.

While part of me wants to see Fix get off the snide, after watching Straight Out of Tucson, I have to pull for RBY. This will be the most anticipated match of the tournament. As far as the most anticipated weight class, I would have to go with 197 because it is so wide open. So many guys could conceivably win. For least anticipated weight class I will nominate 174. Starocci is just too dominant. One can make the same argument for 125 where Spencer Lee is even more dominant but his quest for #4 makes that weight class more compelling compared to Starocci who is “only” going for #3.

I guess I have the luxury watching this for the first time and able to comment on your predictions. I was there at the BOX center to witness this awesome, yet crazy Nationals. If I had not seen this AFTER the said natty's, and watched this before the tournament, I probably would have agreed with many of your predictions. It's amazing most of these matches were so different then what your thoughts were going in to the semi's and finals. I was impressed with Van Ness, Bartlett and definitely impressed with Levi Haines. Who would have thought Lee would not only get pinned, but basically Quit after that and refused to wrestle back for 3rd. Fix didn't make the finals, RBY was handled in the finals. Parris looked tough against Kerk in the finals. Starocci and Brooks played out as I thought it would. Haines beating Andonian was awesome. I wasn't surprised about Dean. He seemed to slide a little this year. I was surprised of Beard's finish, which I thought he'd finish top 5. Sasso wrestled Yanni tough until the very end. It was nice to see Glory win.

Out of the trio ( van ness, facundo, haines ) I think Van Ness has the most upside and we know PSU squeezes the most upside out of wrestlers. I think Haines is closer to a finished product as his offense is just non stop, but I think that will be his downfall this year. Haines is not really the number 2, but may win next year. Facundo is in a weight class with a lot of good young talent. If he can finesse the strength monsters here he will probably get at least one nat champ.

Vito could have definitely won that match if the referee would have called it different, and I kind of think Vito got cheated honestly. If you remember Vito thought he was getting back points not giving them up vs Glory who he almost tech falled a few weeks earlier. And Vito beat fix in the world team trials not all that long ago. Plus style-wise Vito has a better shot against RBY, I just don't think fix brings anything that's going to catch him and that's almost what you need to do.

Spencer Lee losing will be like Gable vs Larry Owings. Like Gable, Lee will have one off match, deer in headlights, won’t be able to ride his opponent, and bam. The reincarnated Owings beats the unbeatable. It happens and it happens at Nats. Who? Who cares? The main thing is to watch the Iowa Black Tar fan base sits there in collective shock while Brands loses his mind and gets thrown out of the tourney. A guy can dream…

    • @tommyrq180
      @tommyrq180 Рік тому +1

@@ibarr1212 Yes, his tilting is impressive. The only explanation I have for that is that he must have unbelievable grip strength. At his level, everyone has phenomenal grip but he seems to still massively overpower opponents grip-wise. Watch his matches and see how when he grips, it’s over. You can’t make a mistake on bottom with him, and everyone knows it. But I think when you get on the mat, his grip just overpowers people which is really quite amazing. I’m baiting all the Iowa fan zealots here, but genuinely love wrestling and Iowa’s program. Brands is a classic heel and so are many of his wrestlers so people love to hate them. That’s weirdly good for the sport when you have such as obvious “good guy” in Cael and such an over the top bad guy in Brands. BTW, I’m very good friends with Duane Goldman, who is sixth in career wins for the Hawkeyes. I don’t WANT Lee to lose, all I’m saying is that in collegiate sports, the more you have people calling you unbeatable, the more I think of Larry Owings. Or, if you really want to irritate Iowazealots bring up Brent Metcalf and Darrion Caldwell in 2009! Another classic, unforgettable meltdown. Regardless, I’m pumped for Nats. After Big Tens, it’s the second best tournament in the country! 🇺🇸😁

Sorry to see Lee get beat, but Gomez legit put him on his back twice and pinned him even though Lee got a four pointer due to his ridiculous ability to turn people. Wow. I love daton fix but I've said this before I believe it's a absolute tragedy for the wrestlers, for the sport and for the fans that these guys don't wrestle more often, I could be wrong but it's absolutely mind blowing from a learning perspective that daton fix has only wrestled rby in the last 3 years only in the finals, that doesn't even make sense to me from a coaches perspective on how my wrestler is going to work on his flaws if he hasn't seen them against the best wrestler in the nation, there are so many 1 and 2 that haven't meet up this year, I love iowa but I believe it's biggest tournament was that military salute tournament were there wasn't even I believe a top ten team there, this kind of action is why wrestling is dying in my opinion, the big 10 yes I know is crazy but there are alot of guys outside of that conference that will never meet until the ncaa championship which I believe is a total travesty for the sport, we need to boycott these staged tournaments were we clearly know the winners
