"Get away" is the most Dan Gable thing I've ever heard.

What a great Coach Gable story, one of so many fun stories from his former athletes over the decades.
I’m 49 years old, former wrestler, so I admired Brad Penrith’s slick takedown acumen and he was one heck of a leg rider.
His two losses in consecutive years (I believe 1987 & 1988) in the NCAA Finals broke my heart.
I’m happy he’s doing well and hoping he has great plans for the future as we are all entering that 50-60 age range and still need challenges in life.
Thank you for this great interview and fun story.

The competitive nature of some people is literally otherworldly. Coach was thinking, “ this kid better never ever think about ambushing me again” lol. He literally had a hostage and would not let him go and I am sure the rest of the room was aware of it but were wise not to interfere. Life lessons right in that hot ass room, love it

Thanks for sharing the video. I always respected both Brad Penrith and his brother Bret Penrith.
No doubt Dan Gable was blessed with the wisdom to acquire wrestlers like Brad Penrith on his team.

Sounds like Dude got alittle cocky and got taught a lesson (you don't jump on and horse around with a respected man and coach like he's your room mate back in the dorm at a keg party). The classic rules of formality and respect are there for a reason. Time to learn a lesson.

Wrong. I was a D1 wrestler from just after Gable era. Went to many of his camps. It’s a wrestling thing to jump on guys in playful manner (for a wrestler) and then see what happens. Little guys will jump a big guy and hang on. Especially after practice. Everyone laughs. Big guys or better guys will finally get in control then they make them pay a bit and spit them out. Nobody takes it seriously. Except Gable. All due respect to Gable but this story suggests he has a screw loose.

@@tommyrq180Actually, you are the one who is wrong. This guy Penrith is a clown, and I guarantee he had this ass beating coming. Gable taught him a valuable lesson about reading a situation and respecting the top dog. Penrith matched Gable's intensity as Gable increased the pace, and that should tell you that Penrith was indeed trying to test him. If Penrith was just playing around, as soon as Gable started going for real he should have stopped right there and said hey hey hey coach I was just trying to help ya stretch and goof around a little. Nope. He went harder too, and he got his ass kicked and now he wants to whine about it. You poked the bear l, why are you sniveling about getting bit?

@@tommyrq180 this is a different environment than your crappy D1 school. This is the University of Iowa under Dan Gable. Brad tested the bull out and got the horns.
On another note, Brad probably deserved the ride out, sounds a little disrespectful.

This would make a great episode for a movie on Lifetime Network, just saying, not that I watch Lifetime. The Surreal Greek tragedy, I would feel so lucky to walk away from either wrestler.

    1. Go Noles.
2 I used to do the exact same thing with my son. We would be practicing on the mat and he would almost be in tears. I would not let him up. Told him to get up. He would get tired, hyperventilate, get mad, work himself up and yell (I was never hurting his physical health).
It is a great way to toughen their mind. Once he calmed down, he realized he wasn’t physically hurt. And would work towards escapes.

For a champion wrestler, Penrith sounds like a wussy here. He fucked around and found out, still sore about it years later. And he started it!

    • @VanishedPNW
      @VanishedPNW Рік тому

Dude I couldn't believe this when I heard it. Like what the fuck?? Who the fuck is this guy? He was surprised that he got fucked up for pulling a punk move?? What world is he from? Let's face it, Brad Penrith fucked with old broken down Gable because he thought Gable wasn't a threat. Then, whoops, turns out you're going to get fucked up for testing a legend, and he's bitching about it as if he was violated somehow?? How was this guy ever shit on a wrestling mat?
If I ever pulled some shit like that with any coach I ever had, it was game-on, and you'd get fucked up seriously bad. You can do what Penrith did to teammates or other wrestlers, but to an old coach while they're cooling down? No. Never. I never tried some shit like that. It's called respect, and this clown in the video still don't get it.

There is something definitely wrong with Gable, it's called PTSD. He got PTSD from his sister's death, and it made him crazy for the rest of his life. That "get away" story is creepy.

This! It drove him his whole life. Trying to win to bring his parents joy. Same thing kids do when their parents divorce. Root trauma is what’s driven him. Surprised with all of U of I resources it’s never been addressed
He’s still carrying the weight of his sister’s death on his shoulders.

The “get away,” isn’t creepy at all. Dude started this whole mess by being a dick and Gable taught him a lesson.
For sure he’s got issues in head but I would argue most uber elite athletes do.
