    Well done Christian!
Top 4 must-haves for living more than a mile outside any town in the Black Hills:
    1. Availability of Century Link dedicated service line (DSL) fiber internet.
    2. If you don’t want covenants, buy on the border of National Forest to avoid the neighborhood junk yards.
    3. Plan to buy groceries by the week and SHOP LOCAL for everything possible.
    4. Buy a 4x4 vehicle and learn how to safely drive on snow and ice.

Well each inch of the way we live will be chipped away. As liberals and alians take it. But what the hell the money's good.
It hurts to see the glorious hills bulldozed down to put some rich jerks house on it. Who then leaves it, because the winter's are so harsh. Can't replace that scenic hill. Will our hill's be just a memory, flattened by housing? But, hay the money is good. With no care for ruining that part of the Black Hills. But, hay the money's good.
Voting liberal, bringing an end to our freedoms, well crap that's to bad!! But hay the money's good.
Ruing the water with waste from factories. Well crap that's to bad. But, hay the money's good.
With the influx of people comes their bad habits. Well all be dealing with all the bullshit crap we've manage to avoid. It's okay the money's good!
It's funny how it appears to me, when this decision was made, THE BIG TALL SECURITY FENCE went up! How many of the regular people have one? Hell it's okay, the money's good! What's safety for our children an our selves mean. The money's good.
The more they push to "Develop" South Dakota, the more our state will be "Distroy" !! BUT HAY THE MONEY'S GOOD! GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!

Vast majority of women throughout time have given birth OUTSIDE of a hospital. Vast majority live to tell about it.
There are country books, some have section about how to do it alone. Midwives are something to look into.
Hospitals are for sick & injured people, pregnant woman are neither.
A lot of horror stories out of hospitals....including healthy babies dying or being injured sometimes permanently cause of incompetent medical personnel.
I know first hand, I'm one of them.
I'm ONLY here cause my moms doctor who wasn't on duty came in to hospital on his day off & found idiot on duty doctor doing nothing as I was near death...23 hours of labor my heart rate had dropped over 100 beats per minute & STILL on duty doctor refused to do anything.
Dad said it was the Most helpless feeling in the world, I was dying before their eyes as they watched heart monitor seeing I not only stopped rebounding after contractions but my heart was steady decreasing, a c-section was being refused for no reason, they were where you are suppose to be for help, they were totally unprepared believing hype of go to hospital they'll take care of everything...
Plus crazy hospital bull of taking blood from baby etc & separating mother & child...very unnatural.

Be pro 2A, not a tree hugger but respect nature as it provides for you. & don’t give beggars $, you only make it worse(like feeding wild animals they become dependent)

Wind can be fun unless it's cold. I plan to test out SD soon. I'm from East, TX and have tried Utah around SLC and Flagstaff, AZ. I've learned I hate cities and either I'm unlucky but people in cities have little integrity on average. I'm looking at places like Yankton, SD but think I'm going to end up in Alaska. I really just wanna get away from plastic people, study in my free time math, engineering and physics and work trade jobs in small towns with low living costs.
I don't expect an answer but any suggestions would be great. Do not move to East, Texas if you like astronomy or outdoor life/hiking/backpacking. It's always 10,000% humidity and always miserable with the exception of 2-3 months, inconsistently.

I love the fact that there are locals there that do not want people to come there and try to change it. they are so right about that. so if and when I am able move out I will be the biggest ally to keep South Dakota , South Dakota . I completely understand why California is screwed up , its a beautiful state but over populated with people who sacrifice liberty for hand outs and it has created a banana republic with dictators running the state into the ground. even if I can't make it out I still want the great state of South Dakota to remain the free state I visited .

My husband was born & raised in Camarillo, CA, grad USC (L.A., as you probably know). I was born & raised in Sioux Falls, grad USD (VERMILLION! lol). He doesn't really have family in CA anymore, so we don't go back often (we met there, I'd moved for work after graduation), but GOD it is beautiful driving up 101. It's easy to remember why people fall in love (with CA). That said, SD is, IMHO, much, much better place to raise children (we raised ours in TX, but too long a story, lol). SD is really good. Please move there (you sound like you have a great head on your shoulders) and displace the Lefties who did make their way in (and think they're the smartest people, the ones there to show 'em how it oughta be). The winters MAY take getting used to, really just depends how stoic you're disposed to be, I think. There's great fun in winter things, e.g. sledding, skiing (even Sioux Falls has Great Bear, good place for kiddos to learn), ice-skating, snuggling inside w/excuse to read/play/create. Pace is slower, but very good for a person. Love your attitude. You'd probably do well anywhere you go.

I'm hoping I can adapt to snow again. and a slower pace of life sounds really nice to me. also , and this may sound funny , I'm done with being frustrated every time I want to purchase a new firearm , and can only pick from a ridicules limited list of outdated models that I'm " allowed " to buy. Some people like to exaggerate about the dangers. I live very rural in the mountains but never been particularly frightened about being away from populated areas or the weather changing quickly. The nearest doctor/clinic is the only important thing I looked at when purchasing. Doppler radar technology is a big improvement on deciding when to leave the house on a day-to-day basis. I don't carry a phone with me when I travel most of the time, when just running errands or shopping, and I've never had my truck or car break down on my travels to nearby towns (about 50-75 miles one way) in 20+ years. I've been caught in a few snowstorms over the years, but you just take your time. Great lifestyle choice if you buy rural. Rapid City is one of my favorite towns, but Deadwood is better.

As a new South Dakotan I can attest to these situations. Winters are HARSH. I was walking in -22 degree Fahrenheit weather and wind blowing with several inches of snow on the ground. I live 30 miles from a Walmart or any kind of substantial shopping. I'm lucky and have a grocery store and an Ace Hardware store nearby. There is no chain fast food here and again have to travel to Sioux Falls to get that kind of thing. I work in Sioux Falls and I commute to work is a 35 to 40 minute TRAFFIC FREE commute. The only downside is about once a month I hit and kill some kind of animal that can potentially cause damage to my vehicle. I've hit my first deer ($1800 in damage) and a muskrat that cracked my front bumper cover which will prompt me to try to fix my old car and $600 worth of parts. You have to have a thick skin and be independent to live in the country here. Self sufficiency is a must.

One interesting oddity after coming back to SD, Sioux Falls, where I grew up, is none of these other small cities in the state have grown or increased their populations much. With exception to Sioux Falls which has tripled it’s population from when I was a kid, even Rapid City hasn’t grown much, which surprises me the most. I think the Rapid City area and Black Hills are some of the most beautiful places in the whole region. The lack of any major corporations and big businesses never establishing themselves there is the only reason for that slow growth so lack of good paying jobs effects that. That in itself will be a plus to many who are well off so would love the Rapid City area. Because of the big mess politics has made of many large cities, I predict this trend of slow no growth in the Black Hills region to change a lot and that means a lot more people moving there.

I'm curious about the use of siding on the exterior of almost all homes. In the SW new homes are brick or synthetic stucco which has a lot more curb appeal. Can't justify the price of a house that is 90% siding which I reslize is just my opinion.

    • @LifeInRapidCity
      @LifeInRapidCity  4 роки тому +4

This typically is a result of what materials are most available in the area. For example. in the south most houses have brick siding because it is the cheapest and most efficient in the area. In South Dakota, we have an abundance of wood, so hardboard siding is the most common.

My parents are moving to SD probably next year during school break. We're originally from Washington State, moved to South Carolina and been here since around 1993. Well they're getting older and the muggy humid summers are taking a toll on their health so they want to move somewhere with low humidity and colder weather. When they move, I'll no longer have any family here, and family to me has always been important. I think they're talking about Aberdeen. I've looked into it. Seems like a nice place, not too big and really looks safe and family friendly.
I work for the local school district, so I'll probably try to take some work in that field in Aberdeen. Anyone reading this who lives in Aberdeen, I'd love a local to give me some tips. I'd like to know things like where NOT to buy a house. I know nothing about Aberdeen, don't know if there are any bad areas. I'd prefer not to live directly in the city, more on the outskirts or a nearby suburb.

Anyways, this area has been 'okay' at best and living outside the SF area in a small town has been the biggest mistake. We're from a small town but IF you're not form here or your kids are special needs / not into sports they do not give your kids support and there is a TON of bullying in the smaller towns. We recently visited Rapid City for few hours as we were passing through and the people were much nicer and reminded us of home. We currently looking into moving out that direction in the next 1-2 months.

Turns out when people who are wealthy move from their home states but keep their jobs 💯 remote, the local economy doesn’t matter much. Just makes it impossible for most to move there.

The outdoors. We have hunting seasons from September (Dove and Waterfowl), October has pheasant season well to the New Year, November is deer season, December, January and February is prime ice fishing, March if your lucky will show signs of winter ending, and by late April or May you'll be to go hiking, camping, and fishing and enjoying Summer activities outside.
My mother and stepfather retired and moved to SD from Las Vegas after 25yrs there. They don't do much but sit inside. They mow and do light gardening but for the most part they sit around. They loved the LV city life style....going to shows....eating at random cheap buffets and going shopping. Mom doesnt like being cold (which we are for a solid 7-8 months of the year) or the bugs and humidity. Stepfather could care less as long as Mom isnt bugging him.
If you like to drive around and be a tourist or an outdoorsman....its great. If your a homebody, you can get what you will out of mowing your yard and talking to your cat I guess. Lol.
There are walking, biking, hiking paths in both cities. But the real experiences are outside of those places.
