I was born and raised in Rapid City (1947) Former RCPD officer, and Pennington Co. Jail Maximum Security Officer.....When I retired from the HVAC field in 2014, I had already made plans to move south to escape the South Dakota Winters....I was not a winter sports fan, with the exception of Deer and antelope hunting, so winters were just painful to work and get around in. The 2nd reason I left was the cost of living.....with all the people from California and the west coast moving to the hills, the prices on everything just kept going up. I relocated to Puerto Vallarta Mexico on the Mexican Riviera, where I am never cold and can afford to live well on a fixed income.

The best thing about Rapid City is it's right next to one of the most beautiful areas, the Black Hills, in the whole Midwest. Rapid City is nice and clean so to me that means it's a gem for SD.
I live in suburban Sioux Falls, by the way.

I wish you could have been to Shakey's Pizza on 8th street in the 1980's. We had the best pizza parties there growing up. I grew up in Rapid City, but had to move to Boston at the start of High School. I was going to move back last year. Florida was cheaper and warmer in the Winter. Maybe I will buy a Summer home there when the prices come back down.

City wise Sioux Falls. It's a foody mecca. It has more of a midwest vibe and a great medical infrastructure in town. Better job market. That being said your on the plains. For outdoor recreation you have pheasant, whitetail hunting and the reservior to boat on a hour south of SF. Rapid has a more American West vibe. Mountain outdoor recreation. Less humid in the summer vs SF. SF has a more harsh Winter. I've lived a lot of places and South Dakota is a gem. When the prices moderate I'm looking for a small second retirement home in SD.

The growth is not healthy. Home prices have more that tripled, if not quadrupled in just the last 2-3 years and our property taxes have also shot up because of that. Local working folks can no longer afford to buy here. Also, one only has to try to navigate a left turn out of Rushmore Crossing to know we are overrun with too much traffic. Crime has also gotten crazy- murders have jumped to unprecedented numbers in the last couple of years. As far as politics, we are Conservatives and we're not going to be bullied into giving up our rights or freedoms. In the summer, we have major thunderstorms, tornadoes, and often wildfires. We often have winds of 50-70+ mph, year round. The park your in takes up so much land because we had a major flood there in 1972 that killed hundreds of people and is considered one of the worst natural disasters in our nation's history. The weather here is no joke and you're lying to people if you're trying to say summer weather is amazing here.

My husband and I moved to Missouri from Rapid City. He liked a bigger city, I like(d) the “lower property taxes.” Well, husband had transferred to a company from a great company, thinking he would have even more opportunity for higher earnings. We were sold a bunch of lies quite honestly. Now, after 1 full year, I can honestly say both of the reasons we moved for were LIES. We are moving back to Rapid as fast as we can. This was a very expensive, maddening, frustrating mistake. My dad always told me, the more places he has been, especially in the East, the more he appreciates South Dakota. I truly wish we hadn’t sold our house. Now we have to buy another and take the loss again from the sale of this house.

I just got back form the Black Hills and I explored all over from Rapid City to Whitewood, Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead, Custer, Keystone, and others places. One of the things I loved most was that I did not see a single "pride" flag. There must be some, but I was very happy to not see that being celebrated everywhere. The Black Hills are beautiful, I hope it stays that way.

I think it's important to differentiate between the "Internet Version" of Liberals vs Conservatives, and the "On the Ground" experience of people living in a community like Rapid City. 1) No one in Rapid City is going to approach you and talk politics. 1a) When strangers talk to you in Rapid City they are either saying, "Hello," "Good Morning," or talk to you about the weather, "Nice day" or "I hear there may be a hail storm coming in" . . . . 2) If someone knows your political affiliation (eg- they saw a campaign sign in your front yard for a Democratic candidate), no one is going to get in your face and say, "You're a liberal!" And if it did happen, all the Republicans on the street would call out that antagonistic person, because that behavior does not match South Dakota values. 3) While the Internet might push an "Us vs Them" agenda, a small community such as South Dakota respects that we are all human beings, with different cultural and family histories, and everyone has the latitude and space to live their own life.

      1. Bullshit. Have you walked West Boulevard? Liberal politics are worn on the sleeve of many. 2. Sure, but not on the boulevard. We had a Trump sign on our front yard that was stolen, damaged, peed on, and/or disappeared multiple times. I have a video if you would like to see. Republicans on West Boulevard? Right. 3. The Republicans of South Dakota do, but Democrats/Leftists in South Dakota are just as venomous, ill tempered, quick to judgement, and hateful as their cohorts in Seattle, DC, The Village, or any of the multitude of leftist urban areas in the country. I'm gonna bet you lean to the left, because if you leaned right you would have experienced some of the very same hate, judgement, and criticism that I've experienced in my years. Try having a civil debate about guns with a leftist in Rapid City...nothing matters more to a leftist than their political agenda.
I grew up in Rapid, went to St. Martins and have multiple advanced degrees, was even a Professor for a decade. I've lived in LA, NYC, Philadelphia, Cambridge/Boston, Chicago, and many many many other areas, so don't try to tell me my perspective is limited because I only know Rapid. The liberals of Rapid are equal to their counterparts elsewhere in the country. I've had to work with liberals my entire life, I know of no other, more hate filled and un-inclusive group. Just wait until the next election season...because every Conservative to a Liberal is a Nazi. Ironically those same hate filled liberals are so dim they have no knowledge of history and the Nazis were SOCIALISTS, like most of the liberals today.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I went TDY to Ellsworth AFB back in 1982, and unlike yourself am saddened to see the area growing and expanding. I loved the Black Hills so much so, that my wife and I made it our primary vacation spot for several years. However, the last time we came out in 2020, we were so disappointed to see the explosion in new housing all throughout those once beautiful hills surrounding the city, along with all of the traffic. And that was in the off-season! I'd hate to think what it's like during the tourist season. I will say, however, that the city itself is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained cities we've been to, and the backdrop of the Black Hills still makes it quite a desirable place to visit. With the way growth has exploded there, I dread the thought of seeing what it will look like in ten years. We see what once was pure enchantment being dissolved by so-called 'progress'. Thank you for the video!

Yes, it gets humid in the summer, but if you’ve ever spent time in the southern states, it doesn’t even compare to the humidity they have. The problematic bugs are generally mosquitoes and ticks. I live about an hour from Rapid City surrounded by the foothills, so we’re protected from the wind, but Rapid City is a much flatter area and does get some crazy wind. Also, we get hail storms every year, so if considering a move or visit in the summer I recommend good insurance and a garage or carport.
