As a mom of boys, I made sure my middle schooler, the oldest, understood periods. He knows that a lot of his female classmates will get their period during the middle school age. I have given him tips on what to do to avoid the embarrassment of a girl that may have a blood stain on her bottom or drop a pad/tampon. He knows to be discreet when letting a young girl know and to be prepared to offer walking behind her until they get to the restroom. He knows that it is a private matter that only she needs to be made aware of, if necessary. It’s important to teach my boys to be gentlemen young. LOVED this episode!!!!

Yes, boy mom too!!! Love your comment, I have taught mine as well even told my middle schooler if needed to secretly give up his hoodie/sweater and never laugh because it can be humiliating/embarrassing for a girl to consider her feelings, I'm hoping to raise gentleman like God!

In terms of periods, I think letting the child know before hand probably lessens the anxiety for everyone. I think it’s important that we become their primary source while they are vey young but also that we raise them to be inquisitive and to know where they can find valid information.

I’m 22 and my mom had me when she was 39 so I relate to this heavily it’s actually been on my mind recently so it’s crazy that this was the new episode! I love my mother to death but she didn’t tell me anythinggg. Now we have conversations about it and she definitely understands how it could’ve really made a difference. Her mother never told her anything either so she didn’t think she had to. Definitely a generational thing. I only knew about getting your period because my older sister got hers. She didn’t know either she hid it from my mom for days cause she didn’t know what was going on. One if the things I really wished she had talked to me about is boys. All I knew is that she didn’t want me near them😂 which of course made me want to. At 22 I’ve made a ton of mistakes when it comes to guys because I just really didn’t know and went off of my friends in high school😣 knowing what I know now about virginity, love, relationships, trust etc. I would’ve done a lot of things differently. Sometimes I beat myself up about my past mistakes but I’m happy I learned from them and will definitely talk to my future kids about all of this

Oh my goodness, this was such a great conversation! My mom had previously spoken to me about getting a period, but she never showed me how to put on a pad. Unfortunately, I was at my dad's house the weekend I got my period for the first time (I was 9 years old). I remember shouting from the bathroom that I got my period, I was very excited. My dad just walked into the bathroom, looked at me, made an odd face, said nothing, and then leaves the bathroom. Seconds later my stepmom walks into the bathroom all while I am still sitting on the toilet. My stepmom simply gave me a pad and pointed to the back of the box and said, "just follow the instructions," then processed to walk out. I remember sitting on the toilet reading the back of the maxi-pad box like, "I don't get it." Long story short, it took me about five minutes to put on a pad for the first time and I still didn't put it on right lol. Needless, to say that all my excitement about getting my period went away the moment no one fully thought me how to put on a maxi-pad. Forever, I wished I would have gotten my period for the first time at my mom's house.

First, thank you for sharing your story. And second, that’s awesome that your mom spoke to you about it.
But ohhh nooo about your first experience with a pad 😔… you just made me realize that I don’t think my girls know how it works either … see what sharing does?! You don’t think about that… well I sure didn’t think about it. She’s seen me do it but they may not realize how it actually works and where to put it.
Thank you again for sharing ♥️🙏🏼♥️ and for tuning in!

I'm so blessed to have a mom that was super young when she had me. She basically learnt how to take control of her life whilst teaching me along the way not to make her mistakes. She spoke to me about everything and showed me real life examples. A phenomenal woman she is to me and my younger sister. Our best friend. She had my godmother as well who played an integral role in my upbringing. She was a woman of god but she kept it real with me and for that I'm forever grateful. My dad passed last year but his usual talks about life in general really prepared me for life and still resonates. I was raised in a family and community that showed so much love and care to me was remarkable.

I was told that virgins couldn't wear tampons. I was told this by my girlfriends. My mom didn't even mention tampons as an option to me. She did explain periods, and body changes, but she only talked about pads as an option for me. I was so comfortable with wearing pads that I didn't even try tampons until I was well into my late 20s and I was already a mom.

When I was younger I was never allowed to sit in the table with my mom and my aunts because they didn't want me to hear all their adult conversations. And my parents never talked to me about sex or my period, their thinking was that they wanted me to ask but I never did because I was embarrassed. So I learned about my period from school and my friends. Then about sex from my friends, health class, and church. So when I married my husband I was terrified of losing my virginity and it took me a few months to be comfortable to be intimate. When I become a mother I'll for sure be having those uncomfortable conversations with me children

I was never told about it and had no idea what a period was until I got it. I started bleeding at 11 and hid it for 3 days finally, I told my mom that I was bleeding. She was like omg go to the bathroom now and here is a pad. That was it, I think it was so taboo in my culture and that is why mom never had the "talk" with me. I have a daughter and I can not wait to talk to her about it!

I missed this the MOMENT it aired but I’m backkkkkkk! Good genes for real. Like my mom says “Spanish doesn’t tarnish” (in Trinidad, anybody who’s “Latinx” is considered Spanish.)
My Period Experience? The day I got my period, my dad was the one who explained it to me. (I don’t know why it wasn’t my mum! she was very much at home but it was my dad who calmed me down and told me all about it.)
I also didn’t use tampons until I was 27 🙁 (which is weird because I was a swimmer for the majority of my childhood into teenage years). I was told that it’d take my virginity 🤣 It honestly scared me for a while. I also never actually checked a doctor either and I should but it wasn’t something my mom and I talked about. We just knew it was irregular but never did anything about it you know. I actually wish that I/we were more proactive with that because now I’m 32 and I’m wondering about things. Now actually thinking if I do have PCOS or any other issues. IT’S AN IMPORTANT CONVO TO HAVE AND TO KEEP HAVING.
The birds and the bees? I honestly do not recall having the “typical” conversation. I’m a PK so my talk was “don’t have sex or else Daddy’s gonna have to step down!”
Menopause? I’ve watched my mother go through it but honestly haven’t had that conversation with her. Recently started having it with my co-workers though.
Great episode again Claude & Co!! KEEP ‘EM COMING!

I was a 80’s kid and got my period around 1988 or 89 and I had no idea what a “ PERIOD” was. My Black American mom or aunties told me nothing about this. I was so ashamed/scared. I will NEVER allow my niece to be shamed by something so natural and beautiful. My mom eventually sat me down and gave me the real, but still this talk should had happened way before 11 or 12 years old. I do not have a daughter, but I have a niece and I plan to make it a normal, beautiful conversation for her. Great conversation and Happy Mother’s Day!! 🌹🫶🏾

Just like Lana my mom was awkward about my period. She use to say the same thing about the virginity and tampons. 😂 I think they were just brought up in different times. My mom is Puerto Rican but she had me when she was 41. I think that affected how she was when it came to certain things. I love my mommy and it's funny now. She was born in November of 1947 and I was born March of 1988 so huge age difference. Anyway I loved this dynamic, great job guys

This was great!!! I think your Titi was right, your background doesn’t matter. It’s a woman thing and we all can relate and it hardly ever gets spoken about.
I got my period when I was 9, the day before Thanksgiving, HA! I knew periods happened because my mom and older sister would get periods but I didn’t know why or what I was suppose to do. My mom never sat with me and explained anything. I knew that when my friends and family would get it, everyone knew because it was announced. (Sooooo weird)
I remember that morning I went to bathroom and boom, there it was lol. I called out to my mom and she was excited. She was like…”ahi la pico el gallo” I have NO IDEA why they used this term. But it was so embarrassing. I remember she called my dad and was like, “adivina que?” “A Kathy la pico el gallo”. ( ask your mom if she ever heard this)
I remember after the third person she told, I was like can you stop telling people. Lol
She too just gave me this humongous pad and said, "here put it on". I was an avid reader at a very young age so I would read everything, especially instructions. (on everything) lol still do. I remember reading the box for instructions and that’s where I learned. I was the only one in third grade who had their period so it wasn’t something I could talk to my friends about.
As far as sex, never till this day (and I’m 42) have had a conversation with my mom about sex. I was always curious because I was exposed to things very early on that I had no
Business knowing at that age. I remember going to the library and staying for hours just reading about it. I didn’t dare bring any books home on it but I read everything there was to know. Super early on!! I probably should not have known all that but I felt like I had to educate myself because I didn’t dare talk to anyone. Crazy right?!
My daughter is now 17 and like you, I read to her alot about body changes and what she can expect so she knew everything about periods and even sex. Really early on because I rather her know from me than her friends.
Such an interesting topic that we has women need to feel more comfortable sharing and teaching the next generation. We need to stop looking at it as taboo and teach that its just life and this is what happens to us women.
Funny story: My daughter also got her period at 9 yrs old and she played softball. She knew all about it but I had to remind her, make sure you wrap it well when throwing it away, reminded her on cleaning herself well, reminding her to change frequent and wearing (period panties) you know the tight ones to hold pad firm lol. Etc
She HATED it! Lol. Everything about it! I have a dramatic daughter so imagine! She had her softball game and I reminded her, did you put on a pad, did you take extra pads. And she was like “ I have to put one on to play?” I busted out laughing. Like, yes homegirl! You have to wear one 24 hrs a day and she stomped into the bathroom like OMGGGGG this is going to annoy my life! LOL
Fun times!!! How lucky are we to be women! 😂
Thank you for sharing your stories!!
    Have a great Mother's Day!!

I cannot believe Mama Nilda and I have a similar story 😆 I remember I was 10 years old playing TAG at the playground with my friends during recess. After recess, our teacher takes us to the restroom and I remember wiping myself and seeing blood. I freaked out but tried to keep calm because “surely” it was my fault. I was known to be traviesa so I didn’t want to disappoint my mom by telling her “creo que me lastime cuando me cai” y mi mama preguntandome “y parque?…y Para que estabas jugando si se supone que estabas en la escuela”. That evening, I noticed the blood was still there and thought to myself “well like any wound, I’m sure it will go away. Tomorrow should be a better day”. Well it was no surprise that the next morning it was still there lol. I felt hopeless, told my mom, and she became emotional. She said “Ay mi niña, perdoname. Se que te lo hubiera explicado mas pronto . Mira te enseñare como ponerte esta tuallita. Hablaremos de esto cuando regreses de la escuela. Te quiero mucho y porfavor perdoname”. I was like hmmmm ok 🫤 (so confused lol!!!!). Back story: my mom got her period at 13 and thought she had a little time left before we had the talk. I love her and understand why she didn’t tell me sooner. Needless to say, I made sure that My little sister who is 11 years younger had a completely different and positive experience💗🥰

Your aunt does not look like she’s 80. Wow!!! She looks great for her age. So can a video be made about the menopause? Because I’m most likely about to enter it. How does menopause affect a woman who’s never had kids??

Being Middle Eastern, I was taught the same thing Lana was. What our mothers meant was that inserting a tampon will break your hymen, which is essentially "taking your virginity". In our culture, that's a big no, no. Not sure if Lana is Muslim as well, but religion of course plays a role.

I haven’t heard about the virginity taking but I have heard it can cause toxic shock.
Also, I was excited about my period. I remember the underwear lol! My mom was away on a business trip and I saw a skunk that night.
Yes, the hiding your pad thing lol! 😭 My mom always said, no one needs to know when you’re on your period
I have no recollection of the sex talk but I have a ton of sex Christian kids books. I grew up in Christian circles and I do remember talks there. I was not unaware

My cousin ended up calling 911 because she thought she was dying but it was only her period. Lol. Thankfully we can laugh about this now but she was traumatized for a while.
Her mom was really upset that she didn’t have a conversation with her sooner.

my parents (but in this case just specifically my mom) never ever ever talked about periods, sex, dating, etc.
However I was always very curious and a “researcher” since I could remember and I researched everything puberty related before I even got my period, by that time computers more of a thing.
I remember wanting to wear tampons but I knew my mom would be opposed to it so I put one on when I was at my friends house and I inserted the applicator with it 😂 it hurt but then I tried again and realized I did it wrong. I began getting my own tampons and hiding it until I got the courage to ask my mom and she said “it takes your virginity away” and I challenged her on it and started openly using them.
When it comes to sex I wish I would have been talked to about it instead of relaying on my peers and friends to be my teachers because that caused me to loose my virginity when I actually wasn’t ready (looking back now).
I want to be completely different with my kids, there’s no topic that too taboo for me now. However I will say because of this lack of being able to openly discuss things with my mom as a kid, I found myself growing into adulthood not asking her for much guidance. I love her and we’re much closer but that still hasn’t changed.

Yup! I was 9 years old when I got my period and I couldn’t wear a tampon since it would take away my virginity. Growing up catholic there was a lot of things I was scared. I even thought kissing a boy would get me pregnant 😅

Love this episode. My mom never talk about bird and the bees with me I learned at school and listening to older sisters. Unfortunately I became a teenager mom. But I’m 46 now I have to older sons and a 7 year old daughter now. I already told her somewhat about her period. But as your mom and aunt where saying my grandma never talked about things like that. My mom now 73 got pregnant with my older sister thru her panties, yes she never had full sex but some how things made it thru🤪

I got my first spotting the day after my 12th birthday and the next day it was gone and I did not experience my full menstrual cycle until I was 16. I don’t know why it happened to me that way, but my mom said that the same thing had happened to her when she was exact age as well. Insightful and informative video btw.

My mom is 72 yrs old and i’m 35 yrs old. As far as periods, my mom would tell me every time I would go to the bathroom with her and she was on her period, that I would get this every month and it’s the worst thing ever. Once you get it you gotta take good care of yourself. That’s it. She never got into details or anything. No sex talk at all. I learned pretty much on my own with friends, and reading sex books etc. I have a 2 years old daughter and I want to be open with her about it all. I want her to come to me for everything and anything.

I was raised by my Mamaw in the South of Kentucky. I was not to wear tampons for the same reason. I was told not to tell anyone because becoming a woman wasn't something to be proud of. I was so embarrassed and wasn't even aloud to talk about it. It was awful. But, best believe when my friends started and wanted to talk about it I was there for them. My baby girl will for sure know about it.

I felt really bad for my friend growing up her mom & dad were both Mexican & they didn’t talk to her about periods so when she started she actually thought she got bit by a bug down there. Poor thing I felt so bad for her that neither her mother or father gave her a warning, heads up, or any info. Not sure if was a cultural thing or just her parents. My mom luckily talked to me about or before, but I think I was one of the first girls in my class to start, in 5th grade.

Hi thank you for these videos.it helps to see this because i came from a hispanic home where my mom did not have these conversations with me and now that i am a mom of 3 girls, My oldest being 8 i know I need to prepare for these conversations. What books do you recommend that are appropriate for a girl of that age. And what is your opinion on what age is too soon. My mother has passed away and i would have loved to ask these questions but i am learning as i go. And would love some advice.
    Thank you
    God bless

I had health issues as a child. A lot of unexplained UTI’s and they were actually scared that I was not going to be able to get my period and have babies one day. I was 12 when it happened and I remember my mom practically threw a party. It was a good thing and it was celebrated. Those were my parents and theres not a memory i visit in my mind now that they are gone, that doesn’t make me miss them tremendously.

I’m 29 (Less than two months shy of turning 30), I’m an Aunt of two girls (an 8 month old and a four year old) and my mom didn’t really talk to me about the changes that one goes through when they go through puberty. I learned from my oldest sister (who at the time that I was going through puberty was in her mid/late 20’s) who bought me and my other two sisters books explaining puberty.
