Had one for 22 days. Luckily it was totaled by a drunk in a F-150. He thought it was bad luck and was trying like hell to go places while his left wheel was sitting in the middle of the intersection. I thought of it as divine intervention. The lord saving me from my own bad choices.
ZR1 LT5 Chris great looking cars, terrible junk quality. I had a XKR, absolutely garbage build quality
Go Clunker I believe it. Mine drove worse than a 300,000 mile Taurus.
ZR1 LT5 Chris everything plastic on mine broke from just looking at it, interior headliner, a pillars, everything disintegrated and worse of all the interior smelled like it was melting. It was a terrible car mechanically as well. Shame, it was so good looking, like a fluffy cat that then bites and scratches you to shit
Gotta admit that they have a crapton of airbags... wouldn't trade my 05 xtype.. simple matenance, only drawback is 91 octane fuel, gets bout 35 mpg.
I've always had a soft spot for this, as long as it's British Racing Green and has tan leather interior
That's mine!
@@frankwilliams3865 Thats mine too ! sweet ride
I’ve had my 2.5 awd manual for 10 years. It’s a thirty beast. You can service it yourself and it’s still very presentable and polished up nice. It handles really well.
Save the manuals.
It's still garbage.
You see these and the s type on the road more than it’s contemporary german products it’s a good car
@@voiceofreason2674 Really? Maybe you're not in North America as I never-to-rarely see X-Types or S-Types anymore (Even back in the day.) Certainly never the S-Type R. What's funny is that horrendous embarrassing Hyundai/kia that "looked like" the S-Type (from 40 feet away, at the front, as it was approaching.) still gets me from time to time. From "oOoOo" to "O YUCK" in 3.7 Seconds.
Its trash but thats okay cuz its a JAAAAAAGGGGGG
Me : so sorry, I hit your dog....

"So. What happened to the door handle?"
Well, what happened, was.... (Love the south)
It was stolen .. uhm, er, "side swiped" :D
redneck jag....for the well to do welder..... with a triple wide
Yeah, love those Southerners in Pennsylvania.
I love Jaguars. The X-type was Jaguars attempt to appeal to a broader audiencestay and stay alive. I think they were very successful in that regards. 😊
I love jags too!!! I'm about to go and buy a 2002 XKR with the 4.2 Supercharged V8. It will break me financially but its a jag so I don't care 😂😂😂
They actually aren't bad cars at all. I've driven a few and it was actually kinda nice as an appliance. They're also great in the snow.
Are the 2.5 motors reliable
you got any answers or what?
@@twongreen9968 Yes. Very. Just change the oil and maintain it just as you would any other car. Mazda and Ford used essentially this engine for decades, it's plenty strong enough.
If you're buying one then make sure it doesn't rattle, it should be nice and smooth. They can have issues with the crank pulley but it isn't that common, nor is it difficult to fix if caught in time.
I don't want to brag butt I have owned 8 jaguars.. right now my xj8 2004 gets 30mpg on 275 rear tires..
I love mine 2005 xtype 3.0 picked up for 400$ needed tire new battery and a left side turn signal and window motors. 900$ altogether.
We bought one new in 2002 and owned it for over 10 years and 270.000 km / 170.000 mls.
It was a gorgeous car that served us well: The (German) Ford and Jaguar dealerships were horrendous, the car itself was bloody brilliant!
Also, we switched to an S-Type (since sold) and an XK8 in the meantime. Brilliant cars, only those who never were interested enough to buy or maintain them say otherwise.
Yeah really late answer, but it seems like the american side usually has more negative things to say about it... Most of the owners probably never did the maintinance on time or at all.
Saved mine from becoming a street racer from pre owner that was a moron... wrong oil, wrong fuel, flushed out all and started new fluids and simple matenance replaced some parts n now have a neat and tidy vehicle. Takes off like a lil rocket down hiway
@@jamessmallwood8488
Well done for keeping one on the road. Enjoy your great car, James!
I'm sorry but the Saturn Ion is not bland, but memorably, unforgettably bad, especially the aesthetics inside and out. It looked like a plastic model of a Saturn SL that fell off a shelf and was crudely taped back together.
If it drives wel and it gives you a smile driving it , its a good car!
And 1 big advantage for this type of Jaguar.
It will not convert back to iron ore in 5 years time.
Buy a Mondeo instead if you want a nice driving saloon
Oh, yes it will. Take the (plastic!) rocker covers off and these Jags look like clapped GMT800s.
@@johnennis4586 jags are cheaper to buy then mondeo's and have more soundproving.
for EU roads a benefit.
@@trashrabbit69 Trust me in Europe add a little water to the old models of Jags and they turn back in to iron ore faster then a Boeing 747 flew from JFK to Heatrhrow.
"Buy a Mondeo instead." Fine. ..except we can't in the US. It was only offered as the Ford Contour earlier in the 90s.
Ooh, nice! I've got an '04 S-Type I picked up about a year ago, and I love it. The only complaint I have is that I constantly have to correct people that think they're being original when they ask how I like my Taurus. "Nono, that's the X-Type. This is a Lincoln LS." As if, somehow, that's any better. LOL
That's the reality, though. You really can't be too serious driving an '04 luxury anything. If I was rich, I'd buy a new something. If I wanted to be unique and pretentious about a used car, I'd buy a 30+ year old Rolls Royce. I simply saw a good car at a good price, and while my inner Boy Racer quietly lives on in the dark recesses of my mind, the aging, overworked, arthritic 30-something I am has a cozy, comfy place to relax for long commutes or short trips to the store.
Its based on the contour/mondeo platform and even then its only about 20% of the car, its really only based loosely on the ford platform everything else is jaguar.
I bought an 06 Toyota Avalon recently, for the same reasons. I didn't necessarily want a pseudo-luxury car, but it's cheap, reliable, comfortable, and powerful, so I like it.
Yep I've got an S-type in the UK (petrol/manual gearbox natch) and I always get the "Is that a Mondeo?" Nope that's the X-type..
Lincoln LS is completely different those are primarily rwd some are awd. The chassis platform the x-type has is called cd-132, only two cars share the platform a 2000-2007 ford mondeo (its basically a ford fusion before we had them here) and the x-type.
It’s not a Taurus it’s a gussied up contour....
I’ve grown up surrounded by British vehicles, in a community where Land Rover and Jaguar still command a certain traditional reverence. We own a MINI and MG, and we love our quirky British brands. Jaguar is an institution, and even in the best of them, they experience their highs and lows.
As someone that is highly enthusiastic of legends like the E-Type, the 120, the XKSS, etc, I still recognize the place for this kind of vehicle. It was a stepping stone in the history of the brand, and I respect that. I think the looks are still distinct and modern, the interiors are still sumptuous and luxurious, and performance can still be decent, even with all the Ford underpinnings. I felt the same way about Volvo - Ford-era Volvo’s aren’t bad vehicles, but like the Jag, they differ from tradition, they reached to different buyers to boost their sales and influence in a difficult time for the industry, and that’s fine. Both marques are doing exceptionally well today, putting out phenomenal vehicles that are, arguably, class-leading in many regards.
I'm American and a former used car dealer. I don't know too much about it's reliably but having sold and driven them I would consider an older one for a commuter car. Honestly even the big Jags are cramped in the interior but this is not - not like my Town Car but nice.
The Jaguar X-Type looks like a sedan that wants to offroad
Reminds me of a Buick
Car Throttle build an off-road X Type.. it can send it off road 🙌🙌 good series too.
My neighbor has that Elantra that looks like jag and a Benz at the same time. You know the one. He also has a c class in same color. I get them mixed up all the time.

I leased one of these new in like ‘04. 5 speed manual, AWD and I loved it. I once drove it on a beach, right past trucks that were struggling in the deep sand.
I bought mine for 10 000 3 years ago and sold it for 10 000 2 later. These hold their value here in Eastern Europe.
I'd buy one of those for three grand in a heartbeat if I had any evidence it had been maintenance regularly. An original owner, possibly.
230hp, AWD, sedan, 3,500 pounds... this is essentially a WRX with an automatic (and a fat person included, riding in the back seat).
Also, it is pronounced: zJa-shu-arr.
A manual version is available ;)
zJa-shu-ar?
If you are british, its pronounced Jag- U - R ... ;-) I live 40 minutes from the factory near Birmingham in the UK
Stephen E szechuan sauce ;) from Rick and morty
The AJ-V6 is a sub par engine. There are tons of them in junkyards with trashed valvetrains and heads because, in typical Ford fashion, the timing components are made of soft cheese.
Doug, that’s about as bad as ANY Chrysler!
I’ve always liked these! The styling and driving characteristics.
I literally have been binge watching the videos and didn't realize this was a fresh upload. Sweet Baby Jesus I love RCR
The Roman continually impresses me with his erudite, eloquent, and entertaining reviews. Well done good sir!
I had an x type in high school and it was one of the best cars I ever owned.
I bought one recently, and man it's a great car! Comfortable, reliable, smooth.
Lies
Just got one for 2k.... pressed aclarator n rocket mode..187k miles leather interior, taken care of by pre owner... everything works...
The X-Type and S-Type are quite fetching. Specially because there are manual options available (albeit very rare). And that R version of the S is something to covet. Also great sound system, and the laquer or whatever the hell they cover the wood in is intoxicating to run your hand over. It's so damn smooth. WTF. I've heard the 2.5 is the one to avoid due to the transmission. And yeah, they're cheap as fuck now. Just don't go to Jaguar for parts, because you'll cry when the guy tells you what they want for them at the parts counter. "But it's just a screw!?" you'll whine... and he'll laugh at you.
Fetching....sounds English.
@@wopalongcassidy Hmmm yes, can I interest you in a spot of tea?
@thedog556 If you have to pay someone else for servicing them then I'd agree with you 100%. If you can wrench on your own, then they're a decent buy.
@thedog556 Tell us how your really feel lol. I agree ford parts are generally shit. Transmission is a major concern for this vehicle as i've mentioned. A lot of issues can be corrected if you're a good enough mechanic and/or fabricator. Other stuff like a neglected example isn't going to get fixed agreed.
As I say, this is a vehicle for people who like to wrench but also want a touch of pinache in their ride.
I nearly bought a manual X-Type with a factory gas conversion, an X-Type is still an X-Type though...
Mr. Regular’s content never fails to deliver, but damn do I love when Roman gets a review segment. Keep up the great work fellas, I hope I can get the chance to meet y’all one day since we’re relatively close
I always thought the Jaguar X type still resembled the Rover 75. This was Jaguars attempt to slum it for a while whereas the Rover 75 was Rovers attempt to reach the sky one last time before going under.
I think that's a fair comparison. Rover hit the goal much better though.
The Rover 75 was leagues ahead of the X-Type. It was excellent car. The X-Type on the other hand was okay. Not awful, but not good enough to be notable.
Sam sounds so posh and classy.
No love for the Ion? The Ion Redline was a blast, and ultra practical with the rear suicide doors, huge trunk, and never worrying about dents/dings from the parking lot warzones!
I've had 3 ions and each one timing chain blew and bent rods. Cool little cars tho rather have my nb1 Miata. I love non interference motors🤤
Fantastic review Roman!!!! Glad to see you making more videos!!!!
he speaks way too close to the mic
@@whatevernevermind5960 OH no.....too close to the mic? lol if that's the worst thing anyone has to say about Roman then I think we will be ok.
For anyone considering purchasing one, I absolutely love my X Type.... but as a weekend car. The thing is, it MUST be properly maintained, it's not a Toyota first of all, and you need to check the pinch welds and door jambs for rot before you buy. I found a 2002 3.0 with a manual transmission, every bell and whistle, sport package, and only 110k miles for $2500 in mint condition with all maintenance and recalls done. I'm now at 142k and have only replaced a Bilstein shock, some cosmetic stuff, and a new key fob to bring it right back to showroom. Full synthetic oil changes every 3000 miles (no longer) and premium gas are the biggest drags, but I'm averaging 22mpg's in a 20 year old car so I absolutely can't complain. It does handle like its on rails and has plenty of power for its' size, and I mean I throw the thing around and let it eat. The automatic's are shite, and all of their transfer cases are too after 2003, when Jaguar started substituting in more Ford garbage. The frame and body panels are galvanized and the paint/lacquer are thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. Auto-leveling xenon headlights, auto windshield wipers, heated windshield, the hottest heated seats I've ever sat in, sunroof, full size spare, torque-vectoring AWD, Alpine 12 speaker sound system, and an exceptionally crafted wood and leather interior... Jaguar was way ahead of their time and it puts a fat smile on my face every time I hear the cat purr. Porsche actually designed the engine, and although Ford dumbed it down and mass produced it, Jaguar reintroduced variable valve timing and split-forged internals. If you can turn a wrench on a Ford, it honestly beats the shit out of any plasticky WRX I've owned, for less $$ (I got lucky though)
4:50 That subtle Buffy reference tho
I used to have the 2.1L V6 FWD. Manual though, fantastic car to drive. As you said, well balanced and comfortable. It turned out to be surprisingly reliable, at least compared to my friend's E46 BMW. When something in the rear suspension went bad, I bought Mazda 3 parts and the fit. Could've bought Volvo V40 parts as well. The touch screen was actually quite impressive for a '03.
Nice review. Stays true to 'regular car' reviews.
Great review Roman!
This engine is exactly the v6 in mazda 6 and fusion. It's a duratec
with variable valve timing added.
So unlike many Jags, it's actually reliable then?
@@2WhiteAndNerdy Mine's been extremely reliable... no engine or transmission issues to date. Then again, I do have the 2.2 Duratorq mated to a 6-speed manual.
@@chrwl007 What about the v6 manual? 👀
It actually sounds pretty good as well.
I’ve got an 03 I had from 100k miles, now sitting at about 190k.. issues have come up for sure, and some took a while for me to figure out. Still running “good” but I’ve got a heinous engine rattle under certain loads while accelerating which I haven’t figured out yet. It’s just one thing after another.
Delighted that you were so positive about these! I'm on my second X-Type now, this one a 2003 with the 3.0 and the manual transmission. With a set of good tires it'll outhandle a lot of cars on the road, and it's pleasantly quick. "Athletic" was a good word-it's not as twitchy and raucous as my Fiesta ST was, but it's so much more composed and graceful (and livable).
2005 x-type every option,taken care ofby pre owner ..paid 2 k

I always wanted to bring mine to a meet or see if rcr would be interested- too late now. How about a 2012 hyundai Genesis sedan?
One of these with a 3.0 5speed combo is great.

My dad had the 3.0 Petrol AWD in Green (the best colour) in a 5 speed manual and it was an excellent car.
Great review for a pretty cool car. Many thanks 👍
Ive had an xtype and a mondeo, the xtype just felt better i dunno how, it just did. I also owned an stype..yes i love jags
I had an X-Type. It can haul ass as its awd is great for beating a civic si ricers at UCF.

if Clarkson taught me anything only correct pronunciation is JAAAAAAG, and X-type is not a real one
Actually, Clarkson sees the X-Type as a real JAAAAAAAG.
Clarkson liked the Ford jags.

Do you sell the new style cheek pads? My only gripe with last year's Race Star was that my ear was exposed to the EPS foam on the inside of the helmet and that would kinda hurt when taking the helmet on and off. That seems to be remedied now with the new style cheek pads having fabric in the ear cup locations. I would like to pick some of these new style ones up from you when I order the Five RFX1's next week.
I have a 2004 2.5 V6 manual Mondeo the X-Type was based on - it's a great car to drive - although fwd, it's extremely well balanced, steering is precise with a lot of feel, even at 200 kmh you feel like you can drive it with two fingers... If I could find a well kept low mileage 3.0 ST model, I'd seriously consider it, they are very underrated cars.
since we are on the topic of used "luxury" cars,i would love to see rcr do a video on the bmw e39,many people love that car, including me

Ok you guys definitely live near me haha. I’m in Sinking Spring and relocated here about a year ago. If you want to review an 04 Subaru Forrester I can help with that
Very well done! I own a 97 xj6, an 86 xjs, and an 88 xjs h&e convertible, and never once looked down my nose at these; although you could play the part of the purist snob to possibly knock a chunk of an asking price off to get your hands on one.
A great classic car it has a great look. Thumbs up.
Almost bought a 5 speed of these but the carfax showed a washed salvage title and when the seller didn’t answer to that I ran away.
Never thought i would see an x type review. Ive had mine for 5 years and its been good to me as a great daily
Me too, I have mine for about four years. Yes, it gave me some headaches, but then again, it makes me smile every morning when I look at it. So much more appealing than greyish german small executive cars.
I bought the same model last october, totally black inside and out. It was low mileage and well maintained by previous two owners and has not needed anything since I got it beyond standard maintenance. I've put 15k miles on it since. Everything works on it and works well. But most important, it's a blast to drive. I bought it cheap and it owes me nothing. I've owned 15-20 cars over 30+ years and this might be my favorite.
My mom lives in Cedar Falls. It's a nice city. It's a nice collage town(Go Panthers!) and the woods and the river running through town is cool.
"Life conception chamber"
A damn good winter beater. There are a lot of haters out there so I was a bit skeptical but I really got to like it. 3.0 and AWD is a must, I would not go for the lower trim.
Even with a x308 xj8 I would still love to own one of these there vary good
We love you Roman!
you completely missed the delaware county pronunciation "jagwire"
I see a transversely mounted V-engine: RUN!!!
A lot of the 3800 gm motors are mounted that way.
@@thetechlibrarian Yeah, and nobody ever got to changing the rear spark plugs because they are hell to reach. Just doesn't make sense to mount the engine that way. Not if it's a v-engine
So I actually currently own an 03 x type 3.0 sport. Some corrections to make are that all US marlet x types are awd. Additionally the reliability lies a lot in what the last guy was doing with it. Besides things like the transfer case, transmission, and rocker panel rust on the earlier models. The car really doesn't exhibit any sort of eletrical problems either, besides some small stuff. Also sport mode only raises the rev limiter to closer or at 7k rpm and holds shifts more, doesn't touch damper settings or steering.
The outro is perfect
JACK-YOU-ARE
Ironically, since Jag was owned by Ford at the time, I think this would have been a damned good Buick.
If you squint your eyes, you can see a bit of resemblance to the Park Avenue of that generation.
@@Browningate Yep!👍
Stellar writing yet again. And all back seats shall henceforth be known as "life conception chambers".
Was there a Vanden Plas model with rear seat folding picnic tables?
So... The X-Type is the Star Trek: Discovery of Jaguars, in that it is an _undeniably canonical_ entry in the franchise and yet there is a segment of the fanbase dedicated to demolishing any reputation it may have based solely on the fact that it doesn't meet their expectations for what the franchise """should""" be?
Nice.
It was a cynical monument to the audacity of Ford at the time thinking people would froth at the mouth coveting a Mondeo with Jaguar stuff slapped on it. Its no more of a Jaguar as slapping some Lexus emblems onto a Yaris would make it stop being a basic Toyota

Love jaguars! Do tuning myself!
We are not worthy of Mr. Regular and The Roman. Extra content multiple weeks in a row! You guys are the real MVPs
It's weird. It's not that I ever thought Ford era Jags weren't real Jags, but growing up during the time these cars were being produced gave me the impression that Jags aren't real luxury cars in the first place. So I can forgive the FWD layout and the ford parts, it's definitely still a Jag, but the Jag name doesn't hold much weight to me compared to any BMW/Merc/Audi. It's a real Jag, and therefore it's not a real luxury car.
Back in the in 60s through the late 80s Jaguar was much more luxury and very nice cars my 30 year old Jag runs excellent and rides like a rolls Royce with the hydraulic suspension and real wood and real comfy leather, folding rear seats and wood tables that come out in the rear. Base price 55k in 1989. This is also a well cared for example. Last of the true Jags was around 93-94 with the V12
They're just as luxurious as most BMWs and Audis. A step below Mercedes Benz, yes.
Bmw/merc/Audi! Lol, you're a fool, you mean 'rari's, lambos, McLaren's, Bugattis and Rolls Royce.
