Im glad bringing you back here with my thumb up in these sad times of 2022. But still, its really okay and you know why - Its because he's got a Jaaaaaaag.
@@scriptpavianys6522 That's you can get over anything with a Jaaaaaaag.
Clarkson understood who the X Type was marketed at so he never slagged it off because it did the job of being an entry level Jaguar perfect.
Unfortunately there were a lot of morons in the press who were expecting the X Type to be a £20k Jaguar XJ. Fools
They did everything for X-type not to be even a £20k S-type, but in fact she turned out to give way also to C-class and 3-series.
i agree, and its really easy to work on, id say its the perfect step to getting into jaguar as an american, if you want to start with a "real" jag. get an s type

I don't even know why being based on a Mondeo is considered a bad thing
If anything, that's reassuring, and the Ford engines have been working for Jaguar nicely, even in the XF diesel
My Contour, the American branded Mondeo, is a few months older than me and works fine.
I'm surprised the X-Type didn't do better - it was aimed at the upper end (but obvs not the top end) of the company car market - and while there was strong competition from Audi A3s, Series 3 Beemers, and the C Class Merc - the X-Type was a good bit cheaper and was based on a platform that fleet managers had absolute trust in for years.
Putting Jaguar styling and trim on a tried and tested bombproof Ford undercarriage seems like an absolute no-brainer to me.
@@5ynthesizerpatel yes, but apparently all the jaguar purists we're screaming ma exclusivity been ruined. It's like the Jeep Patriot of Jags.
@@5ynthesizerpatelI think the Rover 75 wounded the X-Type somewhat. Same segment of the market, doing the same retro-British luxury car gimmick.
However BMW and Rover did a much better job than Ford and Jaguar did. Hell the 75 is more frequently compared to the more expensive S-Type over it's actual rival. That says a lot.
It was it's own unique platform, not reworking something else in the range like Ford did.
The X-Type will forever (unfairly) be painted as the Mondeo Vanden Plas even though it's fairly far detached from the Mondeo.
@@lazzie7495 I don't disagree that counted against the X for the civilian market.
But company car fleet managers and buyers ( which was the market which the X Type was aimed at) - tend to be pretty pragmatic and less prone to emotional purchases.
My girlfriend drives a Patriot BTW - I quite like it, provided I don't pretend it's a Jeep 🤣

Even in this silly estate edition, the X type still looks like a gorgeous car.
Estate looks better in my opinion...
Yes, there are always too many silly reasonably priced four wheel drive manual sporty estates on the market. We' need more gorgeous cars that are designed to look like a practical off road sports coupe based on hatchback but with chopped rear headroom and a raised center of gravity and 18 inch wheels to loo like a hypercar offering decreased practiality, increased price, poor accident avoidance capability and ride. Estates are silly, who needs a vehicle that can actually be practical, technically capable and efficient in one package if you can legitimately sell more niche vehicles that create almost 50 percent or just about 10 tons more co2 under production than an old conventional vehicle and label it as a zero emission vehicle because upmarket world saving overpriced child slave labor cobalt and nickel mining product is just what a millennial needs, another cliche
estate better looking and more practical than saloon

The Jaguar X Type, demonstrating that the power of a British badge can overcome the laws of physics themselves! Oh Top Gear...
BYSMA4th what Physik-law actually says, That you can't drive on roads, whit 5cm of snow on them?
You could Do that in a rear wheel drive 911
Well Not exactly that because you will struggle to Put anything from that List into the Boot of a 911, and if you try to mount a rope on the back, a german will appear and kill you, because you might scratch the paint of a Porsche, and a 911 wouldnt drive on top of the snow, but rather loob all the snow under its tires away, producing lots of noises, whilst going 20mph and burnig enoug fuel to kill 20 polar bears.

We had this generation of X-type with the 2.0 l diesel, estate as well, and it was of course fwd. We live in sweden. And one year the snow was particularly deep, wich happens every 4-5 years. My dad who commutes 1 hour to work, on pretty country ass roads to save time, said it worked super good, especially with the pretty good gear range of the Manual transmission.
I'm Swedish and experience winters with lots of snow from time to time. Sometime you had time to make preparations, sometimes not. BUT IMO the only stuff you'll need is a shovel, a blanket (just in case) an elastic tow line, winter tires and *maybe* two small carpets. You can easily fit it in a storage box in the boot of the car. And If you don't live like 50 km into the woods where it snows almost 1 meter per day (looking at you, Canada and Alaska) you don't need more. Just winter tires alone makes all the difference when driving on snow and icy roads. FWD or RWD manages just fine as long as there is winter tires on the car. Both FWD and RWD is scary as hell to drive when it's slushy snow with summer tires.
"But we only get snow 3 days a year." Very possible, but the snow itself isn't the "real" danger, it's the ice.
3:58 "... big off roaders with their chunky tires" while showing a Subaru Forester which is pretty much an Impreza wagon with a bit of lift
There's a difference between winter tyres & studded tyres. My winter tyres look pretty much like the normal ones except that they have chunkier tread and are made of a softer compound. Studded tyres only tend to be used in places like Norway, where they can have permanent snow over the winter months.
I just love the fact that Jeremy likes to blow everything out of proportion!
You've made your point after the fourth item mate!

Josh Nason That's like literally what Jeremy was saying the whole video...
They get scared over 3 inches of snow? We got like 10 feet here in New England this past winter, and thanks to our powerful North American equipment we can move it just fine. It may have been -11 (that's Fahrenheit for all those who don't use the correct system) but the powered was flying.

+burdizdawurd1516 In ye old days they used a torch... a flashlight replaced that cause of convinience? (mind the spelling)... When usa came to be it was not so long ago so u think of flashlight (like a flash of light).

The diesel ones range is phenominal if you don't accelerate like a delinquent. Less stress on the car too.
A comfortable car that has masses of storage space, great for car seats, can handle snow and loose surfaces with it's balance and is easy to get in and out.
As for maintainence there are many parts in common with a mondeo so they are cheaper than Jaguar OEM parts keeping the costs down and they are a solid car. Reliability is good as well. Outstanding for an old car.

Why does Jeremy look 30 feet tall?
+ethan Klahn Because only idiots use imperial units.
+ProHockeyPlayer87 We use Imperial in the UK.
+ethan Klahn because all of the plants around him are surprisingly small
+Samuel Brooks the UK officially uses the metric system but it's not fully adopted by the people so certain things people will use metric and others imperial like a persons height people still use feet. since 2009 food and goods are meant to be measured in the metric system but things like speed and travel distance are still being used in imperial basically the uk cant make it mind up haha
+nachospole1 Uk has already made its mind up. At universities, schools, industry, the government, military...etc...etc use SI units. Just because some people still use Stone to measure weight, it doesn't mean UK hasn't made its mind up.
Even in the US, the universities and the entire scientific community use SI units, because that is the only way to do science.
The point of this car is that you can cover roads that are less than perfect quicker and safer, its relaxing

just gonna say, winters where i live get really rough near the end of the season, and my x type has saved my ass on multiple occasions on the ice. i expect the same of it that i would a subaru or s type, just with a little less power, great car, and really cheap on the blue book, great tuner too.
As a British Canadian, who drives a front wheel drive car in rough conditions all you really need is a good set of winter tires on, that in mind, that jag is sick
Since when was driving a 2WD FWD car an issue in snow? I'm been doing it since I first had my license...
And we are climbing mountains with those in here... Never been stuck, but i have pulled out a few idiots over the last months.
Well, surely much better than RWDs.. since you get traction from the weight of the engine pushing the wheels down
Depends... mostly on what tyres you are driving...
It's more about highway instability, I live really far from my home because of school and my mom's FWD car actually had exactly that heart stopping moment Clarkson talks about in the video. It's actually scary, and it's just because of how FWD works (all the power in the front without traction, and the back wheels just dragging uselessly). Luckily mine is a 4wd. Actually the saloon version of this car xD
people in this country don't get snow, if we get threats of even a small flurry people assume the world is going to end and they empty shop shelves. Plus people don't know how to drive, if I'm coming up a hill with parked cars, people will still come down, so I lose momentum and can't keep going...
I guess it depends on regulations. I know in some places for example Studded Winter Tires are illegal (because of the possibility that they would damage the road), so winter drivers in such places will have to make do with something less grippy (or, improvise).
There are studded and non studded winter tires. Studded are banned in many places, but non studded winter tires perform exceptionally and RWD, FWD, or AWD make by far the biggest difference. This show consistently discredits that tires are the single most important factor for winter driving.

Meanwhile in New York: welp time to get the Jeep ready.
Meanwhile in Australia: “Wait there are other cars than 4x4’s?”
Yep the great advantage of AWD. Next step is to put faster cars (better yet, supercars) like the Nissan GT-R through these conditions and see how well they go (I wonder what other supercars can handle these conditions?)
With winter tires, they would all be extremely capable.

4wd does beat fwd cars even driving a circle like gymkhana and being on snow, theoretically they should have the same grip cause its g-force on 4wheels, but if the 4wd does any powerslide its bye bye for front wheel drive.
We tested this with my friend, he drove his Evo9 on snow, and I drove a chrysler neon that weighs 240kg less (should have better weight/side grip on snow tyres) but he was way faster when drifting, couldnt keep up at all:)

+matt martini No, they are miles better in wet weather, should have them for winter full stop, not just for snow...
Ice tyres might, over here snow tyres are a softer compound and have more tread, they don't have any spikes to damage the road
+j4cko56 ._. snow tiers dont have spikes those are studded tiers and for the most part no one uses them cause you can but chains on your wheels

For all 2 days of snow we get a year right? People don't even bother with winter tyres because its just not cold enough here. I just let 2 PSI out of all my tyres if it snows so that they have a larger contact patch and are softer on the ground.

I think that as long as you have good snow tires on a 2WD vehicle, it's just as capable as a 4WD one with regular tires. Most vehicles that end up wrecked in a ditch where I live are 4x4 trucks and SUVs because their drivers get overconfident and lose control.
I, too, had a ski trip (except in the Colorado Rockies) and our friend's Camry drove in the mountains better than my dad's SUV.
If they exten this clip to when they go in the studio, they talk about that car as well then. mentioning they like the quality feel of it.
I'd still have an E91 3 series touring with their AWD
This makes me laugh so hard because there is so little snow compared to where I live in Canada and around my place we have huge hills where people love and it is never a problem! (That is until it snows two feet in a night)
In sweden we can have 2 meters of snow and everyone carries on like normal

what will a car do after its tires dig in 2-3 feet of snow in those situations wider tires are the best option
