In this episode I provide the history of the Jaguar X-type, which was the first entry-level high volume compact luxury car for Jaguar which it was first released for sale in 2001. The X-type was the second Jaguar produced as part of the Premier Automotive Group, which comprised of 4 import brands that Ford had acquired beginning in 1999. Following the initial success of the S-type, a larger and more expensive mid-size sedan, the X-type was to be a volume leader for Jaguar, and Ford had hopes of 100,000 sold per year. However its roots as a Ford Mondeo took over much of the press, ultimately hurting the car's image , even though less than 20% of the car was based on Ford parts and design. Despite adding an estate model by 2004, the X-type slowly faced to the end of its run in 2009, soon after Ford had to give up all of its former import brands to save itself from bankruptcy. - Авто та транспорт
I never cared it was based on a Ford. I was a kid when it was in production, and I wanted one. I loved jaguars of the 2000s. Those designs, especially the interiors, are still some of the most beautiful ever made.
I had an X-Type and loved the car. With the wide wheelbase, low center of gravity, wide low profile tires, it just hugged the road. The leather was definitely the best ever, high quality. I have never been financially in a position to buy a premium Jaguar of today, I am forever grateful that FORD provided this opportunity to me.

My dad had a 3.0 AWD version for years that he commuted far to work in, had its fair share of problems toward the end of its life, but that life was 320,000 miles, so the car is alright in my book. Fun to drive too

I've had my 2002 Xtype for quite a few years now and I love it. It is one of 3 Jaguars that I own and it serves as a reliable daily driver. It only has 55,000 Kms on it. The paint and interior show no sign of wear, even though it is 20 years old, a testament to the quality of the materials. I still get a lot of compliments on it.
The X-Type really got a rough treatment from the press with the whole Mondeo thing. Like you said, by the time Jag was finished with it, there was only 19% of the Mondeo left. And even then - the Mondeo is was a good car.
A few years ago I worked in Scotland for 6 months. Drove a Ford Mondeo diesel wagon while there. What a great car! As an American I had never heard of Mondeo. Probably my favorite car of all time.
The Audi A4 didn't get half of much stick for its VWness and still doesn't.
@@rayk48 - The Mondeo was, IIRC, the basis for two American cars. First, the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. Second, the last Ford Fusion (no Mercury Milan this time, as Mercury had bit the dust) was, AFAIK, was an American-ized version of the then current Mondeo. The Fusion bit the dust, due to Ford's concentration on building trucks and SUV's for the American market; the Mondeo itself is set to go away after the 2022 model year.
And yet people don't seem to mind that the Audi A1, A3 and A4 are based on platforms of the Volkswagen Polo, Golf and Passat and their more downmarket Skoda equivalents, fwd BMW models shared platforms with MINI etc

In Feb 2009 my mother bought the last new 2008 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 from our local dealer. I inherited the car from her when she passed in 2016. I still have the car. It has 57,000 miles, looks like new, and has never needed any repair -- just its routine maintenance. I credit its reliability in part to its use of Ford electronic components. Thanks for your historical review of this much maligned, highly undervalued car. It's still fun to drive and still gets second looks and positive comments from passer-bys in the parking lots.

Owned a 2.2 diesel estate from 2007 to 2019. Ran like a train. Needed a clutch etc at about 85000 miles but apart from that utterly reliable and when we sold it every gadget still worked.
I bought an 03 xtype and we love it. It was dirt cheap, looks great and has been nothing but reliable. Awd is great in the snow. What more can you ask?
It was a cool car. Console buttons were a little cheap, but overall the interior kept its "Jaguarness" despite cost cutting. Well designed IMO.
I bought a 2004 X-Type 3.0 Sport and I loved it. It was a great car. I also had a 2002 XK8 convertible and still have a 2007 XK convertible. Which I will not ever trade or sell.
Being based on the Mondeo3 platform was no bad thing, it was an excellent handling platform, yet supple enough to remain comfortable.
I had one for a while, and wouldn't object to another. So I just had a quick look whilst listening to this, and they are holding value really well now, much more so than their German equivalents.
I currently own an x-type, and I have to say it is the best car I have ever owned I bought mine for 2,000 and just had to fix a coolant leak. It's a pretty quick car really comfortable and a decent head turner in smaller towns. I never thought I would be a part of the Jaguar Coventry but I have to say it's an honor.
I always thought these jags were underrated and great looking little car.
I thought it was a good blend of classic jaguar styling ques with modern (for the time) curves and proportions.

You could buy aftermarket tuned x types though, Arden made a 3.3L stroker model
I wanted an X type when the came out but couldn’t afford one then. It being Ford owned was one of the reasons I looked into them thinking reliability would be improved and parts would be cheaper since they were shared with other cars and more availability.
I don't get it, what is wrong on Jaguar being runned by Ford?
Ford is cheap and mainstream, nothing compared to Jaguar at the time.
The ownership by Ford not only saved the company, the procurement and production process increased significantly. They just should not have told so much about how smart they were to share parts and plattforms. Who cares today about the plattform of the E-Pace? ;-)

I love the X-Type Wagon because it is not only long and practical, but it has the rare feature to open the rear boot glass.
I have a x-type wagon and agree that it is a “neat” feature. However, I have never actually used it, probably because I like to keep the cargo cover extended to keep items out of view!

We had a 2.5 X Type. In many ways a good car, and ours was reliable. Couple of rear suspension links, and it ate headlight bulbs. 2 minor odd problems (brake lights coming on when you pressed the clutch - fixed by shimming a brake switch; central locking played up which turned out to be the tiny flap over the ignition switch key slot sticking, and the central locking thinking the key was still in the ignition). Very comfy seats, decent size boot and the 4wd was good.
Down sides was that the chassis was very much for a cruiser and not sporty which didn’t suit me. Being a hefty 4wd saloon it was heavy and drank fuel (28mpg was about the average, short journeys would give about 20mpg, best of 40mpg sitting at 56mph on a long journey). The gear change was way too heavy and slow. It felt like there was a mismatch between the engine that wanted to be revved and the gearbox and heavy flywheel that were ponderous.
Would have been a far better car with a bit of weight saving (including a lot of weight off the flywheel - and make it a normal rather than dual mass flywheel).
It was replaced with a BMW 3 series (E46). The Jaguar was a better built car and more reliable than the BMW (which was a very average car at a premium price).
Honestly, this is one of my favorite Jaguar designs.
As a kid, I visited the Halewood factory when these were first launched, I always thought they looked great. It was partly based on the Mondeo, yes, but that wasn't really a bad thing as it was well-regarded at the time.
Funny enough i bought an x type 2.1 v6 SE auto no too long ago, love the car honestly (was my fave car as a kid growing up in the 2000s), big issue with them is sill rust, so most get rid of the them rather than get them welded due to cost, shame but i guess its nice to drive something thats only gonna be rarer as the years go on.
I had a friend who owned a Jag and he said " the only way to own a Jaguar is under warranty". I used to want one but not anymore. Thanks' Pat for another great video.

We had a Diamanté in the late nineties. It was like a BMW but had too many gizmos that were costly to maintain/repair.

But the XE wasn't a Jag, the x type was so much closer interior was to the s type, xk, and xj
@@porsche928s4 The Jaguar XE was based on a shorter version of the XF platform. Therefore, it's a true Jaguar. The X-Type was basically an upscale AWD Ford Mondeo. It's not a true Jaguar.

Although I always thought of the X-Type as the “Cadillac Cimarron” of Jaguars, I was still enamored by its intended allure of a compact sports sedan, as an accompaniment to the S-Type, and the rest of the model lineup. Overall the transition from historically traditional aesthetic to a lineup of modernity with hints of the past made those a great set of years for Jag imo. Great video as always!
Of course the Cimarron was very different. Start with an Opel, which themselves are basically an experiment in seeing how cost reduced and poor quality a car can be and still have non-car enthusiasts buy it, and then tack on every wagon-queen family truckster style american grandma attractant... awful.
But the Mondeo was a great leap forward for ford of europe, and by the time the X Type came about had gone through a decade of intensive improvement. So it's the difference between starting from an awful car and an excellent one.
Just discovered this channel. I will definitely be exploring some more of its content, as I currently own a Jaguar X-Type, previously owned an Audi 200 (successor of the 5000 turbo), and drove a relative's Ford Festiva for a while. One of my favorite old cars I would love some content about is the Mazda Protege5.

I've owned 4 X-types since 2002 and still love to drive it.
Its ride and handling is so satisfying me and the car stereo and auto-climate control are too.
Although I'm not a mechanic, I'm trying to share my experiences and how I fixed the issues of my X-types in my blog( in Korean).
IMO, the X-type could be described as rather reliable because most of their problems can be defined as 'common' .
When Ford was developing their world car program, the biggest cost was the underpinnings. So yes that part of the cars, Volvo, Mazda, Land Rover, Ford, Mercury, Ford of Europe, and Jaguars X and S had similar suspension, brake, etc. but most every other part of the cars were different. The underpinnings was the costly part of the cars. Much Success.

I recently sold my X-type Sportwagon. The interior was very much like Jags of old with lovely wood and leather. One of the best styled wagons ever; people always commented on it. I only sold it because bearings in the transfer case were starting to go, it's Achilles heel.

That's why I wanted a Skoda Superb 3.6: Great design, nice V6, an ACTUALLY practical stationwagon and AWD... on that note, if you'd buy an X-type for the estate in the illusion it'll be spacey...or practical...best buy somewhere else.
I had one ... loved it. 3.0 sport 5-spd. Loved it... fun car. Except the check engine light coming on every other week...

Had a 2.5 awd manual trans we bought of my uncle for 500$, we fixed it and drove it everywhere. That car was amazing and would absolutely love to have another. Also you should totally do the Suzuki Forenza. Super cool car that was briefly featured in the Suzuki episode. There was a full track version of the lacetti raced by Chevy, and every production models of the W4 or whatever it was called sold to, it was sold as a estate, sedan and hatchback from brands like Buick,Holden,Chevy,and Suzuki, plus a couple more. Very cool cars and if you wanted any info i have tons on them just ask! Pictures aswell

She was finicky, but that awd saved my ass a few times in the winter. In 2012 these were the cheapest awd cars you could find in the midwest where I'm at. Got me through 4 winters before she gave up. And typical Jag fashion, tons of ford parts were compatible. Honestly it was one of the best sub-$4k used cars I've ever owned
Edit: I should mention, the great ownership of that used car convinced me to buy a newer XJL. (2013). I'm on year 3, with zero issues.. Ford based 5.0, rear wheel drive. What a proper "saloon". I seriously recommend the 2011-2019 XJLs. These are fantastic used cars.

Well in my opinion the X-type was more left field choice like Saab, than it's main rivals. But hey it's Jaaaaag. One guy that I knew had one. It was decent car. And much better choice than E46 BMW.

I would argue that it was better than e46. And I’m 100% positive that e90 was much superior car than x-type.

I really liked these when they came out, the style and body coloured chrome looked great. I was 14 when these came out, my first year in high school in 2001and it ended my second year of college in 2009 at 23.
Had the X-Type Estate 2.5 AWD and it was wonderful.
Looking forward to it! A family friend once had a 2004 X-Type for a few years until their son totaled it. Also, my great aunt had a 2007 X-Type wagon for a few years.

I bought a Mondeo wagon with 2.5l V6 few weeks ago and I really like it. Yesterday I saw a X type wagon for sale and thought: I completely forgot these were a thing. I maybe could have bought a Jag. And up until a few minutes ago I as many thought these were just Mondeo with a different body. Out of those 19% of shared parts I think engines are the main thing (even though I think my Mondeo 2.5 has around 30HP less than the one in X type). And the supercharged version actually surprised me and I'll probably have a little look at it.
Well done. I liked the design of the X-type, and how it looked like a smaller XJ, but I may be a a bit of an old soul even though I was in my early 20s when it came out. I never got the issue with it sharing Mondeo parts, as it was quite different from the Mondeo, 2.5L and 3.0L engines in the North American market were well done for their time, had all wheel drive, and the 2.5L version could be had with a manual transmission which was cool. The interior may not have been up to XJ and S-type standard, but it was considerably cheaper than those cars, and it was pretty nice compared to a Mondeo, Contour, or Fusion. The internet sometimes forgets you can't compare cars from completely different price classes and expect the same thing.

I've probably owned thirty cars--Corvettes, Lincolns, etc. and my 2003 X-Type 2.5L was my favorite daily driver.

I used to drive a dark blue 3.0 V6 AWD saloon with black wheels and red sports calipers - It was considerably faster than my black BMW Z3 that I also loved (In the summer!) A superb winter cruising car for the hills of Scotland loved it, loved it, loved it! Now in my seventies I think of it to the tune of "Days like these." Now I'm maxed out in a small diesel hatch - SIGH?

I had the Mondeo this was "based on" and it was a great car. Even if the X type was a rebadged ford that's not a bad thing
I've driven the Mondeo from this era and currently own the X-type, they don't drive or feel the same at all, the X-Type setup is just so much tighter and it eats up long journeys compared to the Mondeo. The Mondeo was reliable enough and cheap enough, but the two cars a leap years apart in terms of driving experience.

I've driven X and S types as loan cars when my XF has been in for garage work. Obviously the XF is a completely different feel but both the X and the S are good cars.
Driven a few, and had much fun with the top model AWD. I admired it very much.
I had the x202 s type with 3.0v6 and 6spd auto. It was a great car loved it despite the constant electrical issues. Mechanically it was a solid car and never let me down. I find dumb thoes people who are keep parroting false informations like it’s a mondeo and all kind of things. Although i never had the x type i have always find them good and beautiful cars. They just way nicer then a bmw or an audi.

I've got the 2.2D model from 2009/10 and I really like it. It's like a mixture of classic and modern, and the fact that it's like a tamed down version of the XJ means a lot of people aren't quite sure what to think of it.
The hardcore classic Jagheads will hand-wave it away, whereas the non-car people think "omg, a JAG!", while the people that own one just sit in the middle, happy with a pretty decent car that didn't break the bank.
Appreciate the dedication at the end. 🇬🇧 The Queen, it's been said, tinkered with Rovers as a learning experience in her younger days.

Love the JAG quality paint job and leather seats wood trim. I have a champagne gold 2003. Spent a few grand on repairing this and that but is a pleasure to drive
I remember reading those spiced-up big Jags from the 90's (like the '98 XJR) with the large wheels and fat Pirelli tires being described as Margaret Thatcher on Reeboks. Absolutely brilliant description. 🤣

Please Please do a review of the Acura Integra, my parents first new vehicle as a married couple was a first gen 3 door 5spd red 1989 Integra, with the updated blacktop engine. Years later I would be brought home from the hospital in this amazing vehicle. I still have a lot of fond memories of it. Thanks for the great clips!

Still would love to see a video on the c-body GPS. I had a 82 Buick Electra. So many boxy, cool cars were on that platform.
We bought a British racing green X type when they came out - loved the car so much we added a 2003 Red X-Type wagon. I think they got a bum rap.. they weren't sporty cars, but they were comfortable cars and we didn't have any major problems with either. The wagon got all the attention since it was such an unusual thing to see! After about 6 years of ownership - the navigation systems were looking pretty old and tired compared to newer technology. Still miss the cars though!
I currently own a 84 Monte Carlo ss and would love to see a version about the Monte carlos. Yes the 80’s are somewhat common though I hardly see the 70s or even the 2000s versions anymore

I only mention theis because I have worked on a number of X-Types and it's interesting to see how Ford used the platform commonality but massaged it into somethig so completely different.
In fact, any re-engineered (not badge-engftineered) cars you want to do would ne fantastic.

Nice balanced vid 🙂 My own take on the design was that the bonnet/hood was far too fussy and would have been improved by deleting a pair of contour lines. Similar on the S-Type; I reckon it would have looked much better without the crease-filled-with-trim along the whole side, and much closer to a spiritual successor to the “real” S-Type. Still, all these years later I find myself hankering for an X-Type 3.0 AWD wagon in anything but gold/beige. Familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt 🙂
For those interested in Jag reliability in 2009 jaguar won the JD power reliability award which is the 5 years prior to 09, my own Jag s type has nearing 200k miles. For those interested in the jaguar x type avoid 2001/2002 for 03 the improved the wiring harnesses
These started at just under 30k and I thought of getting one at the time, but I heard too many complaints about reliability to spend that kinda cash with a short warranty period. I bought a VW with a 100k mile powertrain warranty instead. But in terms of features and comfort it was a good value compared to BMW and Audi at the time
I LOVE your channel. I have an '04 X-Type 3.0. They are cheap to buy now. It is an incredible car. It is more fun to drive than my 2016 Golf sport wagon. -I think you said Jag didn't offer a diesel. The 2.5L was diesel. I don't believe there ever was a 2.1L gas engine available.
Wasn't the diesel a 2.2 and not available with 4wd
The engine options varied based on where they were sold. In the USA it was awd only with 3.0 or 2.5 and only the 2.5 was offered with manual. I believe the european markets also had a 2.0 and 2.2 diesel plus a 2.1, 4 cylinder gas.

The sport versions makes everything else that released around that time look ancient. Especially the interior with the full nav screen. This includes the is300 c class a4 330! And it had more 225 hp. I laugh at how people whine about it’s reliability considering of the issues of all the German cars have
The press never took too kindly to platform sharing when it comes to niche brand. It was exactly the same with Saab and GM. Although the re engineered car held much of the same design and values of the pre take over models
At least there was some engineering and design put into the x-type to set it apart from it's Ford base. GM would have changed some trim and slapped a Jaguar emblem on it.
Have to especially appreciate it being a contribution to the stark range of AWD saloons & estates.
