  • Sophisticated Online Crime Exposed and Explained
I've been an eBay seller since 1999, maintaining exceptional customer ratings. Recently, I fell victim to an online scam not once but three times. Determined to uncover its workings, I spent months investigating and finally uncovered the mechanics behind this scheme. I've created a comprehensive UA-cam video detailing how this scam operates, potentially saving thousands of sellers who might have suffered losses.
In brief, here's how the scam works:
    1. The scammer identifies a popular product on platforms like eBay, Amazon, or Walmart.
    2. They create a duplicate listing of the item on eBay, Amazon, or their own website.
    3. When a buyer purchases from the scammer, they buy the same item from a legitimate seller on eBay or Amazon who offers free returns, using a newly created fake account.
    4. The scammer inputs their buyer's address as the shipping address.
    5. The legitimate seller ships the item to the scammer's customer.
    6. The unsuspecting buyer leaves positive feedback for the scammer on eBay or Amazon.
    7. After securing positive feedback, the scammer initiates a free return claim with the legitimate seller, obtains a prepaid return label, and sends back an empty envelope.
    8. eBay or Amazon verifies the return delivery via the tracking number and issues a full refund to the scammer.
    9. The legitimate seller, upon receiving an empty envelope, reports the scam to eBay or Amazon, but by then, the scammer has often already disappeared with the funds, leaving the legitimate seller at a loss, including the cost of the return label.

Well done I dearly hope this garbage is exposed and promptly addressed by Ebay. Ive sold and Ive bought with 100%good faith and this mind of thing really wrecks it for everyone. There simply must be a reasonable solution here. It may mean all documenting all package openings on both sides of a transaction with phone video perhaps.. its unfortunate but what else can be done? Ugh

I’m not familiar with eBay returns, but this seems to imply that anyone could just buy something then return it but put nothing in the return box. Is there really no recourse for the seller in this situation?

Not really. Ebay won't do anything as long as they get their pound of flesh off the top. Not quite the same as this, but I sold a vintage toy awhile back (a Transformer) and the person bought it, broke it while trying to play with it, then returned it for being broken. Nothing you can do...

That's a good point, but in that case, the guy's account will be flagged, and he can only do that once or twice. In my case, every time the buyer used a different fake account, his real identity was blocked by both myself and eBay. He/she could open hundreds of fake accounts and do this over and over without facing the consequences.

@@vectorwolf I am sorry to hear that. Make sure to block that buyer, and in the future, take a photo of the item next to the printed copy of the eBay order.

This is not possible. Buyer accounts on ebay have ratings aswell.

It is very possible, it happened to me 3 times in 2024 alone.
