I have been a cabinet maker for over 45 years and installed store bought units but i seen just about every short cut other contractors have done. I check for code violations and advise customers before i even start. I refused some jobs because of this unless they are fixed. I never had a come back because i cared just like Mike. I watch all his shows. Great job Mike and your crew.
She trusts everyone, except her husband that she knows, over a stranger
Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was thinking.
@ this is very familiar at my house as well.
to be fair he's a landscaper and allowed other landscapers to destroy his property and cause his family stress... strange man in my world
I think the husband needs to control all the finances, giving her no access to spend money.
Yeah, and she's the one crying and whining. She so annoying
I usually don't say anything if my Better Half wants something, but...... the Odd time, in our 40+ years together, I'd say NOPE, it's NOPE. I'd rather face her disappointment and anger than lose that kinda money. After a while, she sees why I said Nope.
Beautiful!!! Martin & Frank are two of my favorite guys! Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
her reaction when mike touched the faucet and she didn't see what he did was awesome she was just like "wait what?" lol
I'm glad to see Mike back to his roots again. He always do things the right way. I know he went down a bumpy road last few years putting his faith in others. But he's over came that and I'm glad to see him back and making videos again. I'm a electrician by trade and I do see what he is doing is the correct way to do things. Glad your back Mike. Mike Davison Lower Sackville NS 👍
this was filmed in 2012
"It's amazing what you can do when you have no choice" is now my go-to motivator.
MIKE, your bach! You were the best show on TV back when there were only three.keep making videos, the bad contractors are mostly to blame but the house owners must take some responsibility as well. When a viedo can bring tears to the home owner, you have done something RIGHT. TKS again MH and all the workers God bless you and your family, us have earned it.
I love Mike and his crew, and all the professionals that he brings in "To make it right". Too bad we don't have a program for homeowners to educate them before they sign contracts. A program that teachs the owners what to look out for, what to ask for, and know that this is an ongoing dialogue and negotiation before the first bit of demolition is ever done. Lots of homework needs to be done before saying yes to any project.
I keep saying, bring Home Economics back. Teach how to do basic investing like a 401K plan. How to budget meal money to last a week. How to invest in a home, and how to pick that home right. It's more important than ever now that's it's so much more than cooking and sewing, and yet they don't teach it at all in most schools. Even basic stock investing skills could help a lot of families put away for college.
@arudanel5542 I don't disagree, but college has been pushed too hard for too long. I know multiple people that were sold a bill of goods that in reality, meant nothing to them. Including myself. The market is FLOODED with degreed people, some who are still dumber than a box of rocks, that can't find employment in the degrees they have. Bring back all the trade jobs. Those jobs have integrity and professionalism as well. Those jobs are the ones that actually make America function. From electricians to plumbers, to hvac, to sanitation workers, to truck drivers, welders and the mechanics that fix all kinds of things. Without these men and women, we will grind to a halt. Providing money for advanced education isn't necessarily a good thing. Some struggle is necessary. Without it, we don't grow. But learning to live within one's means, saving for retirement, those skills are beneficial to people.
I worked as a housekeeper for a family with a faucet like the one they have. The family had a disabled child and that was SUCH an easy change to the faucet to make the CNA, and the nurses caring for the child more efficient
My house caught fire back in august 24 and had to be completely gutted down to the studs. That's when I learned why it was so difficult to heat and cool this 1985 house. There was ZERO insulation in the outside walls. How that passed code in 1985 is beyond me. Now I'm fully insulated, garage included and have 15 inches of blown in insulation in the attic.
Frank and Martin should have their own comedy show.
My wife and I built our own kitchen, but we have 40 years of experience. We would never hire somebody we did not know. We hired a friend to upgrade our bathroom for a no curb shower. Our new kitchen cost 4 grand and our new shower cost 4 grand. We didn't need permits for any of this work because there were no changes to the utilities. We did add a half bath, and we got permits for a full bath just in case. If you don't know how to do it yourself, ask 100 people. There are a lot of crooks out there. I wouldn't recommend going to a big box store and choosing someone on their list. I would go to a plumbing store, a tile store, a cabinet store, a lightingf store, little stores and ask for trusted contractors. Mike doesn't live near you.
I love how you do so much public awareness training. I love how you have such compassion for the homeowners. I love your show.
I see a lot of back and forth about should you remove the outlet covers before painting. I know how to cut in, and I get a ziplock bag to put the covers in per room, I put the screws back in the fixture so they don’t get lost. Though a large group agrees with how I do it, there’s another group that absolutely doesn’t. I saw you guys removed them, which I was glad to see. Maybe if you could do a short take on addressing this? You may never change the minds of some, but I think this is the best way, you don’t see the difference in brush strokes, the plate doesn’t stick and peel paint when removing. If you keep the plates and screws organized instead of just dropping them on the floor where they came from. It has nothing to do with how to cut in with a brush.
I had one of those touch faucets in my previous home. We loved it. So I put one in my new home. It used a light sensor in the inside curve of the hoop instead of touch. I hated it, when it worked. It failed often right out of the box. My curious cat would trigger it while watching me use the sink. The rim of the pot I was filling would falsely trigger it.
So I switched to the touch again and love it.
Thank You for sharing this new excellent episode! Always love watching a Holmes Makes It Right project come together.
The blue light is the water temperature. Blue cold red hot. Love it in our kitchen.
Happy wife happy life... Lmao. Greg sitting there like I told her butt this was some bs...
She trusts everybody…but her husband.
Sadly this is a divorce waiting to happen. This situation will happen again. The fact she trusts strangers over her husband is a terrible sign.
The contract should be in 3 installments. never pay more then 30% on start - when they do the demo. make sure all permits will be pulled and a engineer looks over the plans. That way if you have to make changes he can address them. make sure the electrician is licensed and permits pulled and inspected before closing up any walls. When I did the kitchen remodel, the licensed electrician had to fix a bunch of stuff that wasn't up to code, and some was illegally done(never inspected).
i am in the us and see those flyers all the time and just laugh at them especially after watching this show for a long time i just know what they advertise is simply not possible.
Mike is a wonderful contractor and knows what he is doing. Mike will do it right or he will not do the work at all. 😊
I'm glad you came there at the right place at the right time can you does a beautiful job I don't know why people they come up with some lame idea to best of these people houses and I just know I just don't get no understanding they want more money but they don't do the job right but these people right here you got the right man❤❤❤😊😊😊
I don’t comment on the shows very often, but when your husband says no, he doesn’t wanna do it and you’re adamant and almost to the point of breaking up your whole different kind of special look at the mess you got yourself into in the future to your husband
How naive can these homeowners can be? Come on Laura. How in the world?
I'm sorry, I shouldn't be laughing, but dudes face at 3:07 when she was talking about how she downplayed his bad gut feelings about the contractor just got me lmao.
He was trying so hard not to lose his shit.
Her husband kept telling her he didn't trust it and he didn't want to. But she said it would work out and she admitted her not getting her way put strain on the relationship. So, one he should have done research to find a good company to do the kitchen right and her attitude needs to listen. And she let that company separate her and him.
Mike is right. The only way to do a kitchen remodel on the "cheap" is by yourself if you have the talent. It cost me 18k to completely redo my kitchen. Saving money on ikea cabnets allowed me to buy Italian porcelain tile for the countertops and backsplash. Large format 24" x48" Still was 1,000 bucks. LVP flooring. Bosh induction range. Only thing i contracted out was the plumber to move the sink stack. I did the electrical. (my county allows homeowners to do so as long as its permitted.)
the job came out nice, I know you're Canadian so I don't know how prices compare, but I can tell you as someone that owns a custom cabinet shop I would do that kitchen out of plywood with dovetail boxes for about the same price not out of melamine, the issue with people is they fall for the cheap price and end up getting ripped off. I tell people right from the start a kitchen remodel will start at $50k
Wonderful brilliant and I hope the thieves got jailed and stripped of all their assets.
So beautiful this contractor is helping this family out. I hope they throw the book at those fake contractors, take all their money and prison time. Sad to say he is right, you have to check out these people before you give them any money. The old saying goes, you get what you pay for. If it seems to good to be true it is. A good kitchen can easily cost anywhere from 30 to 60 thousand. Thank God I don't have a house anymore, too much trouble. I'm now in senior apartment complex in nice studio apartment from my city.
36:34 Loose blade socket - I was in a hotel in Salt Lake City, where an outlet in my room was so worn out, that the AC cord for my laptop, would not stay in place - just fell out it a gust of wind from opening the door should strike it.
Love the kitchen - you can keep the paint colour though. Wish we knew the outcome of the trial.
I personally think the blue is very neat; i'd have a wall or two that color. Love in particular the backsplash!
Well, it's largely subjective but at some point the two are, I agree, nice, but... should not be in sight of each other. Two completely different palattes
that right there at 16:09 is the problem. ' I will do whatever you tell me' right or wrong if you are paying I will do it!
Her husband just got himself a lifetime supply of "I told you so" towards his wife.
Laura was very naive. She must be very trusting and honest, and unfortunately she believes other people are too. Sadly, scum takes advantage of people like Laura. A lot of people that end up calling for Mike have been through this.
@@SandraNelson063 , she was more than trusting. She was absolutely naïve and stupid to not check with other people who maybe remodeled their kitchens or bothered to look up “what is the average kitchen remodel cost and what does that include?,” before hiring those scammers. I have now done two whole house renovations, complete with installing new kitchens and baths. I don’t know anything about building or construction, which is why I googled everything. In other words, how much does the average bathroom renovation cost? How much does the average kitchen renovation cost? And what is included in that cost? I also googled how to properly do most of the trades, so I would have an idea of what was required. Even with all that it’s still might not be possible to spare yourself from poor workmanship if your contractor hired unqualified people. You need to monitor the job or better yet, hire an independent inspector at each critical stage of a major project.
These kinds of stories make it difficult for me to trust a contractor when it comes to renovating my kitchen. I've watched a lot of these videos, and it seems like it's a gamble whether you'll find a reliable contractor to work on your home.
"I want to agree with you but I can't, you're a plumber" No truer words were said from a electrician.
my only thing is I do not and have never liked particle board anything. I would rather have plywood boxes for my cabinets would last a lot longer, yes cost more but last a lot longer
5:23 - "Anybody" can work in construction, even Mike Holmes can do cabinets. But a cabinet maker would have years of experience making the installation far better. Meaning, a landscaper can do tile - but not as well as someone who just do tiles.
I tell everyone they must vet anyone they hire for any function .
Unbelievable!
Guy shows up in a beat up truck and ripped jeans. Sounds like when the crew showed up in the movie The Money Pit.
They're in that situation because the wife allowed her dream's to disregard her husband 😢 The whole time, he's saying no, she's saying go. I'm sure that's not the first time she's done this. Because his response was, "You're going to have to learn the hard way. He didn't say those words, but his actions spoke volumes .
I absolutely loved this episode. It’s heartwarming to see the family get the safe and beautiful home they deserve! I’m not totally sold on the blue walls in the family and dining area against the brown kitchen tiles, but hey, it’s still a massive improvement! I hope the family feels more settled and can finally relax without all that extra stress.
I’m seriously impressed by the touch tap and that clever bottom corner cabinet, it’s such an innovative use of space! But I have to say, the HVAC systems in the US always leave me scratching my head. Here in the UK, we don’t really have them, and I’m amazed by how poorly they seem to be installed at first compared to how easily Mike and the team bring them up to code.
Out of curiosity (because I genuinely don’t know), do you have building inspectors or someone similar who needs to approve these systems before they’re covered? Or can they just be installed? Do you need a test certificate like our one for gas and electrical work here? We mainly use gas for heating with radiators, so the whole setup fascinates me!
Always make sure you do a background check on the people you hire to remodel your house
The part that concerns me with this couple is that the husband knew something was wrong, but the wife was so for it that it created animosity in their relationship. That is a word that doesn't point to them having a good relationship. He should have gone with his instincts. As usual, Mike and his crew did an amazing job, but the couple has more issues than a messed up kitchen.
Great kitchen only downfall is the particle board cabinets again
I Agree about the particle board cabinets; I bought a manufactured home and the kitchen cabinets were - of course; made of particle board and were laminated with a wood veneer. Well after about 12 years of light use they tarted to degrade; I ripped them out and replaced them with semi-custom cherry cabinets, and I made sure plywood was used when I ordered them from Shenandoah Cabinetry. YES - - - - - there was an up-charge of around 15 to 20 percent for the plywood construction...
Mike's going alittle overboard about the fabulous cabinet construction on this episode.
She trusts everyone but her mate sounds like a definite break up in the near future
I love the underlying message, hard to notice, that no matter the race/ gender/ background if taught right anyone can do it right and with pride.
My opinion on the kitchen, is that the top of the cabinets should have been filled with wood to the ceiling. All that gap does is collect dust and will be a challenge to clean! The wall color blue would have looked better if it was just a couple shades lighter. A hint of color and not in your face color. Plus a lighter shade would make the room look larger.
Agree, I hate that space between the top of the cupboards and the ceiling! In my last place I insisted that they went to the ceiling, unfortunately in this house they’re not…..
And round stickers to cover the screw holes? So every time you wipe down the cupboards that’s going to come off. Nope
@Bozemanboss WHAT?
mike is a good person
These are the same type of people that probably paid 100% upfront too.
Wait, the contractor gets to pick who the references are? I have an idea. An Escrow company, once a contractor has a proposal the home owner pays the final total to the escrow company. The company sets up a schedule of milestones with the contractor. Milestones will include getting permits and passing the inspections. This includes inspections from the escrow company as well. The schedule would also mandate that the final payment would be 1/2 the total and would not be available until after the home owner signs off. No deviation from the work contracted is allowed, by either the contractor or the homeowner. The plan is frozen before work can begin. The contractor cannot ask the homeowner for any money, they only get paid by the escrow company.
That would be punishing all of the good contractors. How about the legal system does their job and punishes these criminals.
@@princenaz23 The legal system shields contractors both the good ones and the bad ones.
@@ronaldhudson169 makes sense, the department that overseas this legal system probably answers to politicians who are in a racket with some type of contactors union so they all make money off of things like this. I'd even go as far to say that good contractors get punished while the bad ones get rewarded
Bro needed a divorce lawyer not a kitchen.
@@robsp32 , bro needs to do his own due diligence.
Love you Mike Holmes!!
Knowing that this program is like 20 years old, can you imagine what the cost of this renovation would be in 2024 dollars?
My friend was able to renovate his kitchen for 19k all in, in 2022. Kept all utilities in the same place. New cabinets and appliances (except fridge). Hired a local contractor.
The "Holmes Makes It Right" series started in 2012, so 12 years ago. Your point is still valid, though.
It's really cool seeing the girls work and learn this industry. I think the blue is a bit much on the amount of walls, maybe as an accent would be better
@@niveknospmoht8743 I was thinking the same thing.
Mike, there should be a supervisor system in place that inspects all aspects of the contract down to paying the contractor, thats bonded.
They can walk into a job at anytime to make sure the jobs being done right. They can also refuse to pay the contractor until the works done right and the company who supplying materials nor the contractor can place a lean on your home. The home has way more value then most renovations cost.
The home owner makes a contract with the insurance business who oversees the job, the contractor also does his contract with them.
This keeps some fly by night contractor from screwing people.
(My first basement ever)
I've been remodeling for 44yrs now Mike and his guys are awesome. I get calls often about people getting taking of advantage of really inragges me ,hopefully they prosecute that company.
I’m surprised that more homeowners don’t take the law into their own hands and extract some _vigilante justice_ and ensure that contractors like that can never _physically_ work in this type of business ever again. 🤛👊🤜
What a heroe,exelente work..!
I hate how the wife keeps crying throughout the whole episode. Barely holds herself accountable. Tries to play the victim when her husband told her it wasn't a good idea.
the fact she cried about making her kids miserable is good to have on the episode, if there's a divorce and custody battle, they can admit that into evidence as her not acting in the best interest of the children.
I know these are reruns but it would be nice if they listed the original air date in the description.
On court day live feed should have been broadcast to the court room for the judge and jury to see.
mike always has good looking and smart as heck ladies working for him!
I really dislike the cabinets above the stove. That would have been a great place for a decorative range hood.
Where was the inspectors
Mike, you left something out. You should also have their insurance company send a certificate of insurance directly from the insurance company to the homeowner name them in the insurance certificate. The homeowner if they don’t follow the proper protocols will fall into the trap.
I’ve owned several homes over the years. I’ve had contractors do work and I’ve never had a problem.
Wine racks in kitchens:- A very BAD idea, as wine needs a cool environment, hence the traditional "Wine Cellars" that were so popular - and still are with everyone who knows about wine. If you have a underfloor cellar, reserve some space there for your wine racks. Wine should be stored in cool, dark areas, free from temperature fluctuations, movement and vibrations.
Damon's a little nervous a little nervous, lol
Mike, the color is called "Periwinkle".
41:30 He likes it 😂
I think 'Holmes' has always done a good job
Admittedly, I am not quite 60 yet, but in my lifetime I have never seen anything close to a "dream kitchen" for 19 grand.
This place I'm in at is the same so much wrong but if you catch them in the act or point out way to many people saying what they are doing is wrong like I did we are the bad guy make it worse instead of making it right and harass and bully and bad mouth and try to force me out so I 100% agree with Mike.
Nichole, she is a keeper!
9:25 Talk about melodramatic ...."Oh the children have been traumatized!"
Yeah, the mother is a very naive person, i would question if she is even capable or mature enough to even do her job as a parent correctly, not that the father is any better for that matter.
What about what she’s done to her kids through her own ignorance and fairy tale dreams?
That kitchen Ad was so obviously a ridiculous price. Then they offer a bonus deck too? The cost of materials was more than the price they offered.
There was nothing wrong with that wood floor just needed to be refinished
Particle board is garbage regardless no need to waste money on that skip it go solid wood
Does Canada celebrate Thanksgiving the same day that America does? Love watching holmes on homes also.
Yes, but it's the 2nd Monday in October and differs from ours (US) where theirs is based on the old harvest festivals of Europe.
Oddly enough the blue actually flows well
Yeah I’m staying single forever after watching this. Only nightcaps from now on.
Contractors always use the hostility escape clause as a way to get out.
That's Money Saver Magazine again for you, check time stamp at 3;09
I have done kitchens for 30+ years if you think you’re gonna get a kitchen for $19,000 you deserve exactly what you got the kitchen. I’m just finishing now is $97,000. There is no kitchen that can be done for $19,000 and then here comes Mike lambasting everybody except the homeowners
never trust anyone. Always do your due diligence
Exactly why you don't rush into thing, have faith in humanity and swing your trust door around like a flag
Is this going to pay off all the lawsuits against him for all the scams he pulled?
That blue.....😱😖
As a feature wall, maybe. Bit it doesn't seem to work as a full room. It could be a little better I person however.
We always payed 33% to start
Another 33% during & 33% after completion to our satisfaction
let me guess, after all was said and done, the wife probably said it's thanks to her that the kitchen got this amazing renovation from Mike
That is a great idea to use the title of money for nothing by dieer straits in the beginning of the video
Dire straits
@terencemerritt thanks for the correct spelling of the name of the band that did the song money for nothing 👍😁
No on the blue!!
Set a budget be realistic with yourself and always expect everything to cost a little bit extra or DIY
One material I absolutely cannot stand is pressed wood/particle wood and that sort of materials.
If your going to invest in cabinets..get real wood materials..not this glued wood particle garbage.
Yes it is more expensive for real wood.. but the quality is worth the money you pay.
The customer will get what they want .,but I remind customers that they are getting the quality they are paying for.
