- Dave and Ana hired a contractor to put an addition on their kitchen and renovate their house. After a year and a half and over $100,000 paid out, the house is in ruins and the contractor has disappeared. General contractor Mike Holmes takes on the disaster and with many talented trades people, renovates their entire property and moves them back into their home.

I'm a Handyman/contractor and I see stuff like this all the time. I just don't understand why the government doesn't do something about it.
And upset their own in laws, buddies, brothers, families? Nah...
Yes they're doing something... laugh at you
They should be put in jail and not permitted to open another business
There are laws in place, but they are easy to work around. Where i live anyway. As long as the contractor comes back once in a while, the law sees that as he is trying to fix the problem even if he does nothing but show up and look.
I know in Texas this shit don't fly if you screw a homeowner over the judge always sides with the homeowner over the contractor
I’ve been a fan of Mike for decades a lot of fabulous work helping people.
it's held up with a car jack out rageous
Found a home inspector on facebook in among my friends of friends. He's posting pictures of what's wrong that he found with permission. His worst nightmare is making a big enough mistake that YOU have to show up to fix it.
i don't believe that facebook or kijiji are not the right place to look for contractors. look them up on google if they are a legit business they would be on google and google and yelp are more credible anyway
Mike Holmes you are what I would call A old fashion tradesman. you have pride in your work, My father always said to do it right the first time and don't cut corners. there are not very many true tradesmen out there now, People today want things done yesterday and pay as little as possible. You are the answer to cowboy builders' nightmares.
when you are in the trades and you do good work your reputation is enough to keep you more busy than you can handle.......I have an older brother that turns work away all the time
No I'm not. I'll just do it myself, using the web to find the way to do the thing via building code. Like I have done every single time I've ever had to fix anything ever.
@@michaelkendall662I had an upgraded HVAC system installed in my house a couple of years ago. All the permits had been issued and I was at home the day the township inspector came to sign off the work after the three workers, who had been in my basement all day, left. The inspector asked me who did the work; when I gave him the answer, he nodded his head, said ‘they do pretty good work,’ and signed off. I think he was in the basement for less than five minutes. Hearing from the inspector that I had made the right choice of HVAC contractor made me feel good. They were definitely not the least expensive, but the house was warm and cool. Getting the right people is important.
@@MeepChangelinghaha, been to plenty of nightmares where the customer had the same mentality
Mike Holmes, the real standard from which to measure everyone in the industry. Thanks be to God Mike Holmes is stored on the web. The voice of real general contractors that did not have a voice until now.
Maybe you should be thanking UA-cam for providing the free stuff to allow this to be on the web, and not thank god for allowing theses scumbags to operate freely in the first place.
She felt so much guilt! I am so glad Mike helped them. This is an older episode, I saw it when it originally aired, but it's a great one.
Watching this as a retired ceiling fixer and dry wall brings back memories
how many people did you take for a soaking?
Mike and his crew are great, they still want to help people. Thank you. As for the other contractor put the word put on facebook, etc. Telling people not to hire this contractor. Hopefully word of mouth will cause him enough trouble he will either do the job correctly or not be able to get another job. I don't usually do stuff like this but from my on out look I wouldn't be able to afford this kind of thing and we don't have a mike Holmes to fix it.
Mike Holmes you are just wonderful! What you did for that family is the ultimate gift of kindness ever! God Bless you! ❤
Mike and his crew did an amazing job
I will never forget how big an impact Holmes had on contractors his first year on TV. We suddenly had a whole lot of fly by night contractors with Ontario plates out here in BC😆😅😂🤣😂😅😁😆
Shawn is BEAUTIFUL and a good honest guy....
Once again Mike you saved another home owner from disaster no fault to their own. I agree it is a travesty when shorty contractors steal and get away with it. An you are also correct the day and age of contractors that care is falling by the wayside. Its a sad world we live in , when the thieves run free.
Mike Holmes the most trusted man in Canada. He has saved so many lives so many dreams the guy should be running the country
That was ridiculous. I get that someone could get away with a few thousand dollars, but over 50K is horrible.
When the courts look the other way you had better have a friend that can twist some arms and break some knee caps. These predators only exist because good men in America have become gutless sheep.
They do it all the time and the laws can't touch them. CHANGE THE LAWS!!!
@@stephenbrinckerhoff3510people just need to learn if the whole house needs to be renavated don't buy the house
@MultiTurbospeed But if you hire a bogus inspector, how do you know? That's a MAJOR cause. They're supposed to be "professionals" too.
My father always told me to earn my dollar.
Mike seems more exhausted at the end of this one than he usually is. What a big job!
There is no better feeling than finding someone who desperately needs help, and having the time and ability to help. Charity is the only cause that serves the heart.
I love the way you go in and make it right. My wife and I watch you when ever we can. Thank you for what you and your team and family do for the family’s that have been screwed over by crooks.
Easy when you have a blank check…walk into any older house and to “do it right” you need money
He’s constantly been called out for scamming other contractors and not paying his team properly some still a horrible person aswell
I cried too - I’m sure seeing WAY more than you expected was absolutely knee-weakening!! ❤ Mike is THE MAN!! ❤❤
Tears of JOY! Like me😂
Not much makes me cry anymore but seeing this woman’s reaction brought tears. What a beautiful home you’ve created for her and her family.
This has got to be one of the early episodes from over 20 years ago. Mike seems young and still new on TV, nice disagreement with the HVAC contractor.
it feels like one of his first episodes, also you dont see his kids or the person he brings in to go over things, also he was far more hands on.
Wow you guys should be on CSI
@@tylersmith9868 we used CSI's image enhancement to figure it out
@@jjjacer I think it's because in the early season the budget was small. From what I could find the show basically started off with Mike volunteering his time and experience and working with contractors to get discounts for the home owners. Later on his entire crew was paid for by the TV station, as in him and his regular family with crew on their back. Many contractors he called in would also give discounts or donate their time for good publicity. On top of all that a Holmes foundation was set up to help with cost eventually to the point it was listed home owners paid about 10-20% of the bill for the work done.
But as I said I am fairly sure the money was tighter before the show became one of the highest watched shows on Canadian Television.
the number in the title of 113 means season 1, episode 13. it's part of the original season of when he was started out on tv.
The quote “a jack of all trades but master of none…”??
Is actually only a partial of the original.
The entire quote goes as such:
“A jack of all trades but master of none is always better than a master of one”.
Actually, the longer phrase was a later development. It started off as a jack of all trades, being simply the title you gave to the local handyman, and was a compliment. That's the guy who knows lots of basic skills, he can probably get you the basic stuff sorted and knows one or two skilled guys to call in.
Which was then brought into the derogatory term of 'jack of all trades, master on none' during the Tudor period. during this time, it was seen as wasting potential to spend all your effort on a hundred skills when you could become a skilled master of one or two, such as becoming an apprentice Smith, or Mason, etc.
Then, we get the full phrase, showing up about a century or two ago, where being able to do many jobs in an industrializing society, was seen as good.
Never ever think that a contractor is top notch because of an ad, website etc. My career was in advertising & marketing. We are paid to make toilet water look good. Always always do in depth research before signing a contract. Not just calling a few ppl or reading a few reviews but contacting your city's inspection office etc. Take your time and plan way in advance b4 you actually need the work to begin.
One way I'd check out a contractor besides references, would be to check local lawsuits files by customers. It's all publicaly available.
Fabulous! Yes, you do it right. I hope the owners are able to publish the name of the thief contractor and the government finds a way to put him in jail.
I agree!!
I cried right along with her. God bless you Mike
All's well that ends well. The crew did a fantastic job and the family is back in their house. There's no way the original contractor isn't liable for this, unless work was done without a contract or the contract the homeowner's signed was a disaster.
Yes of course, but you assume the contractor has the asserts/insurance to cover any damages they might win, plus the up front legal fees.
Right thing done right, unfortunately not the first time.
I am amazed seeing probably the original version of series I found by accident at HGTV in my country last year. I smiled a bit.
Thank you for being one of the good guys Mike and your team.
You're so right about there not being any good workers. When I was a girl a man took pride in his work because it told you what kind of man he was.
Sooo great!! Love Mike’s ethics!
I want to cry over what that contractor did to them. Thank you Mike Holmes for making it right
I have never seen a person like Mike he is a very special and what other people he comes in and he is and you can tell that lady in her family sure did appreciate she was crying and you can tell that she really appreciate everything Mike done God bless you Mike Holmes for and I know one of these days you are going to be blessed God bless you and the people that works for God bless you Mike
Mike and all did amazing miraculous work to be able to put this house back together. Best of luck to this family as they get all settled in their beautiful, properly put together home.
Wow that's a Hell of a job, can't say nothing ,but you pull out a Miracle Mike,GOD BLESS YOU AND STAFF MEMBERS WORKER.
Great job as always. Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
watching Mike motivates me to produce the best finished product possible.
Don’t think back. Your house is gonna be beautiful and forget about everything else with the other contractor. Just enjoy your beautiful house and be happy.
Mr. Holmes you are such an amazing man for everything you do and making it right for contractors messes up thank you so much for what you do for other you are such an amazing person loving and caring how people feel thank you again watching your videos I just love them and I really do appreciate what you do for people we need more people like you that cares for other God bless you mr. Holmes hope you have a joyful and a blessed life and I know God's going to richly bless you for what you do God bless you sweetie
Was anything ever done about the thieves that took their money? The house beautiful!!!
I cried with her.
Mike understands. All you really have is your reputation. What you do, how you treat people, matters.
Yes but if you hide behind company names you can prevent a bad rep from following you.
Mike you and your team are awesome! I really enjoy your professionalism not just from you but all the trades involved. Keep it up Mike.
OMG! All the trades, rescured this Family ❤❤❤ Tears of JOY ROLLIN DOWN MY FACE😂
WOW Great Job !!!!!!
One of my all time favorite episodes.
Sherlock Holmes, I LOVE THAT GUY!!😂
These owners are truly thankful for the excellent job you guys did. Thank you 🇳🇦💌
Love this show, I’ve learned so much
We NEED Mike Holmes on LONG ISLAND!!😊
great job Mike....you made them happy...that's what counts.
mike is a man of honor, if i was to ever get a house i want it checked by him
One word 'AMAZING'
Mike Holmes installing tile straight onto plywood, now you know this is an old old episode 😂
Whats wrong with that?
@@seane6616you need to put down membrane or at least do some kind of waterproofing. Otherwise your tile will crack
@@1packatak How will water proofing stop it from cracking?
The days before he was able to work with a limitless network budget & materials donated by the manufactures in exchange for product exposure on the show.
The homeowners still paid for the work being done.
I've never seen him installing tile over a membrane outside of a bathroom, however I'm surprised he didn't laydown durarock first.
I use to work with a Independent General Contractor, he did good work, he was just a bastard at times & when he talk BAD about his customers after we got back to the Van at the end of the day LOL!. And he goes off about it & at times I didn't know why or understand, what a waste of energy. I use to cut his tile as he laid it. Well after 2yrs I had to move on, wouldn't give out a raise. Had my own truck with tools and the jobs kept getting further away, costs go up, Turn Pike. For some reason he was getting cheap. Funny thing he beg me to stay & said, show me the money$ Good contractors are hard to find anymore even to work with. Big developer I work for only 4 months, I had enough, they were cutting so many corners. They were taking quantity over quality. And they said I was taking to long to do the job. And I said, this is crown molding & your new construction of these new ceilings are not level! @#@&^%$$ I said! LOL! PS# I have a dream, if I hit the BIG lottery, I would set up a scholarship funds for Trade Schools. AI is coming! Trade Schools is the way to go...
The plaster and strapping: So correct about difference between true and level. My house is a hundred years old and fixed several walls. One part had a new wall due to changes for new foundation and stairs. The rest I saved and restored the plaster and lathe.
The old walls are true. But you really can still see the different to sheet drywall.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing Your passion and adventures from Toronto Ontario Canada 😎👍❤️🇨🇦✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️💯💯💯💯💯✨️✨️
Mike is one BIG angel & he hates being late!!! I used the same Junk guys in FL & TX who have been great. I feel so bad for these people that had so much done wrong & so much had to be taken down. They lost all their money they paid the POS contractor. The contractor should be in prison. That was a lot of money!!! If anyone else took someone else's money, they would go to prison. WTH is the difference? Why is the law always for the person who did wrong or can't do anything about anything?
Mike, You and your crew are awesome
Mr. Mike Holmes you are a man that is a contractor and can make a difference by educating contractor's home buyer's
all to make a lasting difference in the home's today and in the future. I have seen a Legacy in the future in home's. It is the Legacy of Mr. Mike Holmes housing, is it to late too make a difference, NEVER.
I miss this show I wish HGTV would still air this
You know this episode is old when you see a BlockBuster Store at 24:19 lol
I'm surprised that Mike didn't demolish the entire addition and start over. This is an unusual episode.
We need Mike here in the USA!👍
I wish you would put the date on these so we can watch them in order
I love that they took the time to film b roll of someone flipping the yellow pages.
Mike to the rescue, again. Inspectors should be able to pull licenses for these so-called contractors. Luckily there are people in this world like Mike Holmes.
That was so cool
That contractor isn't going to mess with the right person and he will regret ever messing over anyone
I know that they did the best that they could - but I hate that it was so rushed. Had I been the owner, and had to live in a tent, I'd still rather give them a little extra time to get things done perfectly, and the paint dried, and everything ready to move in with no reservations.
watching these videos makes me feel young
Wow! The moving van that pulled up at the end looked like it said Tippet Richardson on the side, my uncle Russell Naylor was the owner and President of the company many years ago! I knew they had transitioned into a lot of warehousing and document storage and was kind a few weeks and my summers of hoping they were still in the moving business and it appears they are! Fond memories of spending a few weeks in the summers at their house in Toronto and the cabin in Penatanguishine! Thanks Mike Holmes for a truly amazing episode!
LOL! Tip It and Rip It movers. One morning my friend went to check out a truck for a move. The brakes barely worked, the shocks were non-existent and it was a wrestling match to shift gears. He asked the guy in charge of the yard if all the trucks were like that. The guy answered, "No, the rest of the trucks are shot.".
BTW, I worked for Scarborough Movers. :D
@@surferdude4487 lol...my uncle's time was back in the 50's...
@@capicolaspicy That may have been when those trucks were new.
@@surferdude4487 it was also back in the time before greed and profit took over almost everything. A time when giving excellent service actually meant something!
God bless you mr Holmes and bless all those who help you to get people back into their homes safely
🤣😂😅 Mike make lough at the intro of this video .
I had once worked for a drilling contractor that drilled piers for new house construction, sign post holes and front porch piers. There was one contractor that built a house 13" out of level. The home owner had to tear it down and start over. I can understand 1" or 2" out of level, shims will suffice to fix that, but 13", that is insane. They put a tennis ball on the floor and it looked like it was circling a drain!!!
Who's the guy that questions you about taping up the furnace? He's not somebody I would like to hire it shows laziness! Can you please tell what company he works for?
That detective said it wasn't a criminal offense!? The contractor took their money and left, that's fraud!
In the United States we have this thing called Angie's list.
It's a website where people can go and check out a contractor or businesses
Customers can sign into them, leave complaints or compliments!
Bless you for giving this family through life back. ❤
When he was putting drywall on the ceiling joists 17:20 i would have put un a little expanding foam to control tenp variations and noise.
This contracting business seeeeems preeeetty lucrative!! Get the money and run!
Just think, this happens to thousands of families all over world, every single day!!
My Dad was in charge of a construction company when I was growing up. He also had a construction company with his brother and he did it right. Now days that care isn't there.
How are the cinder blocks unlevel? The lines are even, when they meet at the corner.
Do you ever make it to California
I'm a single mom who needs you
Mike 🙏🏼
Mike didn't back butter his tile, i would to show him this video lol.
When I started my business, I just said to myself if you do a good job, the work will come and it has. I own a painting and carpentry business. I go the extra mile for my customers.
LOL, I can't imagine there is much truth to that statement.... you're a women !
Thanks for making me smile though, I needed that.
...God bless you Mike Holmes...
Makes you wonder how many missing persons that were contractors did shit like this to the wrong person.
I would be the same way. If Mike Holmes showed up and said he would make it right, and then called me and said he needed a little more time, I would have said the same. Take your time big boy. I trust you.
The YELLOW PAGES!!!
I remember watching this series way back when ir first aired... must have been HGTV. Canada was a different place back then, so much has changed.
15:20 Problem with Natural Gas. It is just an Added Expense you have to Pay. No One Needs More Bills. Just go with Electric, it is even Safer then Gas anyway, Plus, No need for Another Bill to worry about.
Mr. Holmes, maybe you should add ZOO Keeper to your list of qualification's on your bigger job's.
Mike this is the most work I've ever seen you do where is your normal Crew?
The man
i’m an engineer, but admire the trades and wish i was a craftsman/carpenter. this kindof slop just irritates me. i’m not always completely satisfied with code minimums either.
wow, 20 years old this episode
It's shocking at 21:56 where the lady claims She Left her Husband and her Daughters because she Needed some Time to Herself. Again at 26:26 she admits she left them as she couldn't cope with them. So She's the Victim here? Not the Family?
The electrical boxes aren’t sealed up like Mike says there’s a whole bunch of holes in the Boxes with wiring running through so plenty of water vapor getting trapped behind all that plastic
Amen bro
These scam artists will get theirs eventually.
Mike Holmes , you and your Tradesman are wonderful 😊
Hearing a government official basically saying "It is what it is" and then victim blaming. Not good enough. He needs to go and the law needs to be improved to protect homeowners from unscrupulous tradesmen.
I hope they sued that contractor's ass!
