I think the unpainted ball might offer slightly more grip. So when I lift the ball from the woods and throw it back onto the fairway, it should be much more accurate.
Thanks James. I’ve seen a lot of these “Straight” golf ball videos but it’s always on course with a good swinger. Your next video: 1. Choose a friend who typically slices/fades the ball regularly to hit. 2. Get on the Indoor simulator 3. Compare the spin rates with these vs Bridgestones e6 or e12 contact vs an illegal “straight” ball. -All mid-high handicappers will rejoice.
A sim might not pick it up very well because aero (dimple design) is part of how they do it. Rather than have a hack try it out, it would be better to have a pro hit big hook swings and big slice swings & compare balls. Or better yet, a robot. There definitely is something to this design because one of the things the USGA is considering to "roll back the ball" is limiting how perimeter weighted it can be.
@@razerfish correct but if we were talking about strictly being a straighter ball there no comparison between those 2. Any urethane ball won't be known for straight fall back
Needed to see more of Brett hitting it tbf. Varying the level of golfer on these videos is something you should do in every equipment test, just so we have a comparison in case you're hitting it particularly good/dodgy that day.
Was going to basically make this same comment. Its great to see James's content and expertise but sometimes we need to see average everyday or even HIGH handicap players using some of this equipment since it is aimed more at them anyways.
I have hit this in prototype and in the final production model. I know the science behind them. They are a tree piece 75 compression ball. All three layers have the same density for a perfect center of gravity. I own and operate Hunt Golf and have ordered a staggering 288 dozen for my spring order with Wilson. I know they will sell fast. I saw that they hit very straight. I will have to relearn yardage though because they go further than the Wilson Staff Model Ball and the DUO Professional Ball which they are replacing. Great review and keep up the good work. You should also try the Wilson Staff Model CB irons as well. They are the best set of irons that I have ever put in my bag.
How is the 75 compression? Does it have the wonderful Wilson softness off the irons? I love the slightly older Wilson Smart-Core (Blue) & like the Wilson Duo Optix. I have played endless balls. Titleist, TM, Cally, Srix & Vice. I now like Spalding Tour SD and SD X which are very straight but not as soft as the Wilsons. I will try this new Wilson Triad.
I finally found the new Triad golf balls and played my first round with them today. (1) hit more fairways - check (2) hit more greens - check (3) hole more puts...still to be determined...winter greens plus I am a crap putter. Verdict: found my new ball. Love everything about this new ball.
I see a lot of videos about different golf balls that say will go straight, like the Polara self correcting balls. In each one they test them with a person(usually a golf pro or instructor) that knows how to hit a ball consistently and for the most part straight. How about having a person that has a slice already, to test them with? See if they actually do what they say.
The way I understand it, Polaras will fly straight in the sense that it will go the direction that the face is angled when making contact. So if you make open face contact then it will go "straight" as if you were turned outside facing that direction, but won't continue to spin out like a normal slice. Polaras also don't go as far as other top tier balls.
I played the Staff Model Raw ball. It feels great, spins great, really good performance. If it's muddy the ball does stain quickly. The stain doesn't affect performance but I walked past it more than a few times. Visibility goes way down. I'd buy them again though. Will try these.
Thinking exactly this myself. Played Bridgestone e6 and it was straight. BUT for me the higher MOI also to meant less spin imparted, and for the way I play had too much run out on the green.
I've read (mygolfspy) that the Triad competitors are AVX, Tour Speed, Bridgestone RX, Q star tour, etc. -- i.e., softer urethane non-tour balls. (Price in US is $40).
Curious as to how these balls compare to the Maxfli Straightfli ball ...I believe they have a similar dimple design to the Polara although the Maxfli is legal....
The answer is simple if you don't have a good swing it it the ball is not going to go straight and if you have a good swing at it is going to go straight simple as that
I generally use the Wilson Staff Model ball, suffer a little distance loss off the tee but gain so much around the greens, Stops instantly and/or spins back. Their Duo Professional is the other ball I use when not hitting driver well. Good ball, just less spin around greens.
According to Wilson, the three part construction uses materials that each has the same density, so that imperfections in the layering will not adversely affect MOI, allowing the ball to travel truly in response to whatever strike you put on it. No wobblies. Put a good strike on the ball, it goes according to plan. Put a slice or a hook on it, it's still going to react because of the side spin though. Most golf balls are made with materials that have differing density (grams/cm3), and when adding the covers over the core, it the layering is unequal, or if the core migrates toward the outside (making one side of the inner layer thick and the other thin), then the ball will be unstable because of the mass imbalance. If all of the layers have the same density, then off-center cores don't contribute to the mass imbalance that gives some balls erratic flight characteristics, or as I like to call it, the wobblies.
I can’t believe a new ball is released and it’s not a “Talking Balls” video with Chris Dennis (PGA Professional and short game expert ™️). I don’t fancy the raw finish. This might be psychological, but I feel that a matt ball is “rougher” and gets more affected by wind and comes up a club or two shorter than expected.
Years ago Wilson made a ball and the hype was the inside material an the cover material was the very same weight per oz or whatever. So that there was no way the ball could have lop side weight to it. I played it for several year and remembering it was okay, so they are at it again, I would purchase a dozen just for the heck of it.
Bought a box of these. They aren’t any straighter than any other ball. Either you put a good swing on it or not. They do feel really good on all shots and seem to be a good ball. They spin more than advertised , IMO. I’ll stick to my BRX or AVX for low spin performance.
Raw finish golf balls tend to scuff and discolor much faster than painted balls, plus there is a spin issue when they get some moisture on them as well. As far as the straightness claims…I’m sure the proper swing can send them into the woods lol. Although concentricity issues in golf ball manufacturing is a real problem and can make a good swing yield a very bad result.
No mention of feel or spin around the greens on short shots? Some distance balls have a harder feel with and go straighter because of less spin, how about this one?
I've been playing this ball for a few weeks and it is straighter than my previous Chrome Soft. I like the feel and the distances and spin appears to be similar to my CS. I prefer to give Wilson my money than Callaway. My only complaints are cosmetic. This ball is boring AF and it looks like they didn't even try. Give me a yellow option and put some red and grey in that iconic W/S shield. The ball does return to a repeatable spin axis in my Check Go Pro so they aren't perfectly balanced but just as good as every premium ball I've tested. I haven't had one jump on the Check Go Pro yet which is the indicator that you've got one with an off center core or something.

What did we learn? A pint of Stones beer at Wooley Park helps your golf. Is that why James does more videos at Wooley Park then at Huddersfield these days. One has Stones bitter in the bar. On the other hand, maybe what we learned was that some golf balls have defects and Triads have less. But even that does not fit my game, unless all the balls I buy have exactly the same defect that sees the ball heading for the woods on many shots. Great video James!!!! Per the other golf balls that are straight, you need to line the ball with the line pointed to where you want it to go the same as when you are putting. Use the same line on the ball at the Tee lined up to the flag and try it again 🙂and see if that makes it any straighter yet.
