MATE! I Have been playing Wilson Staff 50 elite balls for this very reason since 2016! Highly recommended (it helps that the balls are incredibly affordable too)
Hey, I have always loved the Titleist Balata golf balls that were around when I first started playing. Looking forward to trying these new Wilson balls
They should make the Model R the cheaper alternative to the regular Staff Model balls. Looks like they are same price which doesn’t make sense as manufacturing costs have to be lower for the Raw version
@Timo Snwld Wilson has made quality products for years. They kinda got behind the 8 ball in golf when they seemed to go away a number of years ago. When they really came back to golf, their products did not seem to be made for better players. That gradually changed to where we are today.
They make good equipment, just don't have much advertising so you don't hear about it. That and they usually have a lower price point than the really big guys, which puts the thought of "lower price, must be worse" into some people's minds.
Wilson balls like their clubs are often overlooked. I play with Wilson balls now and find them very good. Raw wouldn’t bother me being dirty, just give them a clean after every hole. But as you have noted there isn’t any tangible advantage so I would go the painted😁 Thanks Rick for the great review 👍
I bought some Vice golf balls that looked exactly like those Wilsons (I think they might have been Pro Soft). My only complaint about them was how dirty they got after only one hit. I almost bought these Wilsons, but I couldn't justify the price. After seeing this video, I probably won't go after them. Thank you :)
I have a gadget that spins up a golf ball, sort of like a centrifuge. The unit allows you to mark a line around the golf ball identifying it's optimal spin direction. A light turns green when the unit believes the ball is ready to be marked up. If you then align this line with the direction of your hit, knowing that golf balls spin perfectly backwards when perfect contact is made, the ball should fly straighter. If all golf balls were perfectly round, and perfectly weighted , then this unit would not be able to settle with what it considers to be the best position for the line....interestingly, some balls settle very quickly meaning that the centrifuge has identified the weight issues quickly. Some balls, like the ProV price range, take longer but eventually do settle at a spin position. The subsequent line also helps with additional alignment too. Food for thought? Oh it's also worth noting that once I put a used ball (say 9 holes) on the spinner, it finds its balance really quickly which suggests that once the ball is struck, a little scuff here or there, and this all goes out the window !!! Anyway at least the first shot is arrow straight !!
I don't think they are trying to fly straight on every shot. They are saying that it flies true. There are no imperfections to make it spin one way and turn even if you hit straight. No error on the golf balls part
@@austinlogan4247 they are saying that painted ball don’t always fly true because if there is more paint on them me side of the ball it will create drag and curve like a wiffel ball basically

I loved the video you did on the ups and downs of Nike Golf, and think that a similar video about Wilson would be awesome! Wilson has been around in golf and other sports for a long time. My first set was a Wilson box set, but m not Wilson Staff. What’s the difference between Wilson and Wilson Staff? Why do they have two brands? I feel like they want to be affordable for the new golfer, but also have a tour presence. Nice video Rick, I think your conclusion was pretty solid: you just can't tell if there's really a difference. For the common golfers, it just comes down to getting your swing down rather than trying to find gear that will do it for you.

I like the idea - the lack of paint on a ball would save the company money. I've played the Wilson FG Tour ball for a few seasons back in 2013-14, and I really enjoyed the performance around the greens, as well as the fact it was roughly AU$25-30 cheaper a dozen than a Pro V1.

They worked out at @£16-£17 per dozen, much cheaper than the Wilson’s however they don’t appear to make them in this finish anymore just in the shiny finish but the price has gone up considerably.
Hi Rick. I can understand the marketing angle from Wilson as every company wants to try and differentiate themselves from the competition and trade golfers up to a more expensive ball. However, I'm a great fan of Wilson balls and have been using them for approx 5 years now but come across very few other golfers using them. I won't be switching to them as there are so many variables to consider when striking a golf ball that affects it's flight / direction. It also seems counter-productive for professionals who always shape the ball so I'd be surprised if they would switch. Thanks for your honest test and opinion
Hi Rick, great video. My concern is that unpainted will be harder to see because they’re less bright. Did you notice that? I already have trouble seeing the ball in some light conditions
Nice work Rick... maybe an idea for another Wilson ball video would be to get some old Staff Ultra's to compare the new ones against? But for me, i think i'll stick to my Cally's for now
I own an industrial / aerospace paint company. Now I don't know specifics on whats used to paint golf balls. But, I can say that its funny they don't say anything about the Wilson logo and lineup line still being on the ball. Paint goes on about 1 to 1.5 mils thick, obviously depends on the material they're using. I do know with pretty relative certainty that they pad print the logo on golf balls, its the same process they use to put someone's name on the ball, a company logo, etc. Pad print ink is at least as thick as that, in most cases its about 2 mils and usually very thick stuff (if its too viscous it won't print onto a substrate properly). So yeah its unpainted, but its still got logo print on it. Except now, the logo printing is not even close to uniformly applied the whole ball, its in spots all over it. So wouldn't that bit of thickness de-stabilize the ball even more? Idk kinda feel its a gimmick
Id like to see a video of you hitting scuffed balls vs brand new ones so we can see the spin, length, accuracy, etc of each. I'm sure there's lots of us that use balls that have bounced off a tree or cart path. I know for me it's always a great game if I can finish with the same ball I started with, even if it has some road rash.
If the point was to determine if painting or not painting makes a difference, perhaps comparing the painted versus non painted versions of the same ball (Model R vs Model) would have been interesting.
Great review as always Rick! Have you ever done any videos on how to overcome a bad shot or a bad hole? Tiger had a 10 this weekend at the Masters and then finished the rest of his round with 6 birdies or something like that. A video on how to master your emotions would be interesting and helpful. Cheers from Mexico!
I don't know about across the pond, but we have ball washers every other hole in the states for when our golf ball gets dirty so not sure that would be a big deal.
I use a Sharpie and template to draw three lines on my golf balls (similar to the look of Callaway's Triple Track). I am wondering if this has an affect on the flight of the golf balls. I know that a spec of mud on a golf ball will throw it offline. Any ideas/theories out there?
Been a while since your latest ball review. There are new Golf Balls on the market, the Pinetree balls, could you possibly test those? Allegedly Pro V1/V1X performance.
I buy Wilson regularly (perhaps too regularly) as a beginner, just think they seem fairly priced. I even hit one of my best shots yet with an ancient Wilson harmonised Sand wedge that I bought from ebay.
used to play the DX2 and DX3 soft several years ago and they were a good ball at a good price and I think they were the only ball at the time to have flat dimples, would love to try these out, like the look of the course that you were testing on.
Think I'll stick with my Duo Professionals! I have hit the Vice matt finished pro balls and seems like these raw balls have the same issue of looking old after only a few holes.
Hi Rick, great video - thanks a lot! It would be interesting to know which golf ball has the fewest flaws under UV light. Could you make a video about it?

Thanks for the video Rick! Also really enjoyed the new Wilson irons review. Exciting to see some new things from Wilson!
Nice work Rick... maybe an idea for another Wilson ball video would be to get some old Staff Ultra's to compare the new ones against? But for me, i think i'll stick to my Cally's for now
whats the compression on it? I've tried the Dual + that has 26/29 compression?
Nice test.
Must give them a try
9:31 there is a strange green creature on the screen. Or green thing? Anyone seeing this?
Does gc quad give accurate distances in winter conditions,
Id like to see a video of you hitting scuffed balls vs brand new ones so we can see the spin, length, accuracy, etc of each. I'm sure there's lots of us that use balls that have bounced off a tree or cart path. I know for me it's always a great game if I can finish with the same ball I started with, even if it has some road rash.
It is an interesting concept. How is the visibility when looking for your ball? Does it stand out?
If the point was to determine if painting or not painting makes a difference, perhaps comparing the painted versus non painted versions of the same ball (Model R vs Model) would have been interesting.
Good content as per usual. Cheers Rick, any tips for a lanky lefty?
Hi rick would the atmosphere damp and moist not help your decision on the ball
Like the look of Wrexham GC, great to see other courses in the videos.
Been a while since your latest ball review. There are new Golf Balls on the market, the Pinetree balls, could you possibly test those? Allegedly Pro V1/V1X performance.
I buy Wilson regularly (perhaps too regularly) as a beginner, just think they seem fairly priced. I even hit one of my best shots yet with an ancient Wilson harmonised Sand wedge that I bought from ebay.
should of tested with the swingless club clubs vs pro v1s back to back shots
used to play the DX2 and DX3 soft several years ago and they were a good ball at a good price and I think they were the only ball at the time to have flat dimples, would love to try these out, like the look of the course that you were testing on.
Always appreciate your view on all things golf! Ty Rick
I found an unpainted Titleist on my home course, and I noticed i was playing REALLY well with it for some reason. For 2-3 rounds or so then i think i lost it, but there was a noticeable improvement
