Here's some more information on how this series came to be: I read Console Wars by Blake J Harris in late 2018 and fell in love with his storytelling ability as well as the characters of the Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis era. As I thought about it more and more, I wanted to do my own take on the conflict. Originally I planned on tackling this back in early 2019. After the Final Fantasy XV video, I sat down and started writing the script, only to stop about a paragraph into the second episode. I didn't work on videos again for over a year after that due to various reasons. When I finally got back into the swing of things with the DS series and some other games, I felt ready to tackle this subject once again. Instead I ended up making the Wii U series at the end of the summer last year. My plan was to then work on this series in the fall and winter of 2020, but the birth of my son ended up sucking away all my creative energy. It wasn't until 2021 that I felt like I had the skills to make this. I'm super proud of this video and my next goal is to make a series that's even better than this. I don't know when that video will come, but until then, enjoy my favorite series on the channel: The Great Console War: The Story of Sega vs. Nintendo. Fun Fact: "The Great Console War" is a riff on the youtube channel "The Great War". I originally conceived an idea of covering the series in a more militaristic tone before I really had a strong idea of what my style was. There was even going to be a prologue and epilogue like it was some sort of long forgotten story.
Some things have to be done, but maaan keep up de great work seriously awesome it brings back so many memories this is already great but take your time with the next project

For those of us who have been gaming since the 80's, there were no losers in this war. The real winners were all of us who got the chance to enjoy games from every console/handheld.
And growing up while the console war was raging meant some of the most awesome Christmas mornings waiting for THAT console to be unwrapped! A truly awesome era.
@@Johnny2Feathers Boooooo! 👎😂 Joking aside, I'd maybe just edge it to the sega mega drive overall. But the best game is on the snes, and that's TMNT 4 turtles in time. Both consoles are truly awesome though. 👍
To me this war was way more intense than Sony vs Microsoft. Young people would never understand how great the war was between these two systems. They both came out during the same times and both had very marketable mascots that catapulted into stardom. They actually still have battles to this day but with other means including TV shows.
This took me back man. Jus seeing these random game clips and background music took me to a good time in my life. Especially Super Mario Bros. 3 and sonic the hedgehog
Wow. Those games are so different. I never played SMB because it looks awful. I tried it later and I was so wrong. It's beyond unplayable to the point I raged in frustration at the design of it. Pure trash game design. It manages to be both infuriating and tedious at the same time. Only Nintendo can do that.
This was great. The 16 bit era was when I came to be a gamer. I have countless photos from Christmas’s gone past holding relics of those times. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more from this channel like it.
Same here I got a sega in 91 christmas and got a snes in 1993. And I absolutely will never forget that epic era of gaming renting games and even before that with the nes I was enthralled by all the system releases anything Nintendo still to this day
@@joshuamackey2326 I didn't get a genesis till round 95, much later than most other kids. I know that was the year because I remember playing MK2 in the living room of my Dad's apartment, and then later watching Speed and The Lion King on VHS (which both came out in 94) lol Before that my only experience with the console was going over to my older cousin's house a few times a year, and he had one with Sonic 1 and Street Fighter 2. Those weekends were some of the best times of my life.
Excellent round-up , thanks !! During my childhood i grew up spending countless hours playing games with my Sega MegaDrive/Genesis , and as a SEGA-child i witnessed both the massive success of the MegaDrive followed by the shocking failure of the SEGA Saturn. Once we were the proud owners of a strong console and in only 1 generation everything unexpectedly collapsed. The story of SEGA was both ,sweet and bitter ,and always brings me some level of sadness even today. Thanks for the memories !!
This was an incredibly well put together film! Damn, nearly two hours of content! This had to have taken you months to put together! That is an enormous amount of data to research! Nice job! I have also subbed. 👍
This video was really well done man. I lived through the console wars. I'm 45 years old. I've been playing video games most of my life. At an hour and and 40? You really nailed a lot of shit dude. Many a great detail, often left unknown, presented in high-quality. I'm not so much of a gamer now,..but more of a Bushcraft man. But I do come back to my games now and then.... I grew up with Pong, the Atari 2600....the NES and SNES of course...Etc. I have watched the entire franchise evolve into what it is today. Many repetitive and UNfun games,..... but that's just me. You reinvigorated my love for the entire franchise. You earned a like and a subscription from my old ass! Continue with the good work sir. 🤘
Incredible work. Really appreciate the time and energy and quality. Those two hours flew by (even with frequent rewinding to take in all the information and visuals. A+
Just got recommended for the first time as well and subbed. Hopefully this little algorithm bump helps him grow his channel to the level it should be. Nice work my friend.
Living through the Great Console War was a pretty rad experience, I feel bad for the kids that never had that chance. It was passionate and it was amazing.
I had the Genesis, I was around during that era and my older brother was definitely a part of it, but I myself and my group of friends were more into the gameboy and pokemon fever than what the consoles were doing. I only got into Nintendo and its properties with Super Smash Bros 64. Honestly that game did more to help Nintendo franchises than people realize.
I've watched this presentation in its entirety. It brought back so many memories. Lines were really drawn in the sand on courtyards over the sega genesis versus the super nintendo lol.
Really well detailed documentary. I'm sure tons of us have seen plenty of videos on this topic but this really puts everything together with a nice, nearly complete timeline. High production values here.
My parents bought whatever was cheapest. That was all they cared about. Thank you so much for such an in depth documentary on the history of all these consoles - I learned so much tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it🙂👍
I was a Sega kid got a Genesis in 1993 at 5 years old, I loved mine. I had it all the way up until 1997 then I got a PS1. The 90's were a great time to be a kid from video games to movies, toys, all that fun times.
I owned a Genesis by Feb 1992. I owned an SNES by Apr 1994. I rooted for Genesis for most of their war. But looking back, SNES was much better. A top 3 all-time console for me.
I agree, the SNES was way better. Mostly down to the controllers for me as the directional pad on the Mega Drive felt slippery and difficult. Loved the feel of the SNES shoulder buttons. Sega didn't have Mario Bros. or Zelda. Also, I noticed how a lot of Sega owners would tell me Nintendo was for kids, even though at the time we were all actually kids. Because buying into marketing makes you look so mature. lol.
I had both, SNES was superior to Genesis! If you look at Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter back then on both systems, the graphics and sound quality was way better on SNES.
Genesis had better sports games and better sound. SNES had sharper graphics and sometimes smoother gameplay. Most arcade adaptions we're better on SNES than Genesis (like Mortal Kombat games, Sunset Riders, etc).
8:45 What music did you use there? In the early days I would say these MD games also stood out: Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Thunder Force 2-3, Phantasy Star II, Castle of Illusion, Gaiares, MUSHA, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Quackshot, Warsong/Langrisser, Starflight, Spider-Man vs Kingpin, King's Bounty The good MCD games were generally not FMV-based, I'd recommend checking out games like Lunar 1-2, Snatcher, Bari Arm and SoulStar. 1:02:00 Good music choice lol
SEGA!!! This was very well done, good job. My childhood gaming was defined in this era. Sega flamed out late but the Genesis was an all time great system.
words can't describe how much i thoroughly enjoyed this video. Just feels like diving into a different time that I had peripheral knowledge of, but seeing it presented like this is really stimulating for me. Excellent job!
I miss those console war discussions with friends who owned different consoles. We could spend hours bickering about who's console was the best but that was just as much fun as actually playing on those consoles.
For me, the Sega Genesis, much like the Playstation, was cemented as my chosen console based solely on an exclusive title of a game belonging to each console. For Sega, it was Sonic and for Playstation, it was Metal Gear. I was a diehard fan of both series and it was those exclusive titles that kept me glued and loyal to these consoles, regardless whether the graphics/gameplay was superior or inferior to rival consoles. It's amazing how much a character or game series can be adored to a point of loyal and unconditional love. When Sega and Sony lost the exclusivity of those titles, my console preference became completely flexible. Now that they don't make Sonic games anymore (like they used to) and Metal Gear is dead (due to Kojima's departure), I am completely lost with games. Aside from God of War, no exclusive title has won my heart like the one's in the past.
@@48hourrecordsteam45 sorta the same with me and the PS3 but they saved me last minute from getting rid of it. When I bought the PS3, I did so strictly for bragging rights. It was still scarce and I actually got it through a 3rd party. There was absolutely Nothing to play for it lol. If it wasn't for Elder Scrolls Oblivion to keep me occupied, I think I would have sold it for an Xbox because Metal Gear Guns of the Patriots Took. For. EVER. I mean like. For freakin' Ever. Luckily, they eventually rolled out a shit ton of exclusive titles like God of War and Infamous. Even after replaying Metal Gear for the 90th time, Skyrim came out and I fell into a hole lol. PS3 managed to hold on to me until the release of the PS4.
For me it was different. I have over 100 games for my PS3 alone. And of course all my PS1 titles too. XBOX was never anything i cared for, not the games and i dislike the controller.
Retro gamer, collector and lifelong Sega fan here. My games room has a Mega Drive, Mega CD, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and, for the last two years, a SNES. Love the fact that games truly were different back then depending on the port. The different rosters in WWF Super Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble, depending on whether you owned the SNES or Mega Drive/Genesis port, springs to mind.
Unlike consoles today, which seem no different to one another, the 16 bit era had two consoles with extreme differences between them. You will not see this ever again in console eras.
My 3rd to 6th gen Sega and Nintendo systems are: SC-3000, Master System 1, "consolised" Game Gear, Mega Drive 1, Mega Drive 2 (with Mega CD 2 and 32X), Saturn, Dreamcast, handheld Game Gear and Nomad, and I want to get a Pico :P Famicom AV, Super Famicom (with Super Game Boy 1 & 2), Nintendo 64 and GameCube (with Game Boy Player), two original Game Boys, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, GBA SP AGS-001, GBA SP AGS-101 and Game Boy micro 😄
Megadrive and SNES were my childhood, the first consoles that my parents bought us. Castle of Illusion, Smash TV and Alex Kidd were just some of my faves on the Megadrive.
These videos obviously bring back happy thoughts of childhood but they are also such a high quality source of info and presented in a way that I would have expected these to show up on something like the history channel. Thank you for the love and dedication you out into these. Clearly people are noticing and falling back in love with their systems. I was someone who never ever got rid of anything. I have every system and every game from my first atari up to my PS5. I did lose an nes with like 10 games and an N64 with a few games to friends who disappeared lol. But the rest is all here.
Great vid. I miss the 16bit days. I just picked up an "Arcade-One" earlier this year for $965 and is worth every penny. I have 70,000 including every SEGA game from the Master System to the Dreamcast and NES to the Wii-U. It also has every Neo Geo, OG Xbox, Turbo/Super/CD Grafx Philips CD-i, PC games and Every handheld game in history. Plus it has every arcade game ever released from the beginning of gaming until 2010. It's pure insanity. I'm 47 and will probably die before I play them all. Owning every single game in the 16bit war is everything.
this must have taken you a long time to put your gaming knowledge into this long video and gathering old video footage. amazing work! even though i already knew a majority of this, and i definitely learned alot of new stuff. i always enjoy hearing others on their version of gaming history and i have to say.... this is probably one of the best I've seen/herd. very well put together! you definitely got my attention my like my subscription and my whatch time. looking forward to checking out more of your work. i already watched this video twice.
I was a Survivor from that generation Super Nintendo vs. Sega Genesis I have both consoles but yeah I remember that Donkey Kong Country exposed VHS tape and at the end of it it showed a preview of Killer Instinct Arcade being played made and tested
The Sega nomad was by far the best handheld I ever owned, right up until I got a PSP and then a PS Vita Seriously, it was amazing being able to play genesis games on the go, especially since I could bring a controller and have fully functional multiplayer Battery life was atrocious though, even with expensive batteries
it's a shame white LEDs weren't a thing back then, as the battery life doubles in Nomads and Game Gears with LED backlights / LED-backlit screens swapped in (until 1998, it was most cost effective to use the sort of colour screens that had to be backlit with miniature fluorescent lamps and their associated circuitry that converted battery power to high voltage)
Had SEGA gone in halfsies with SONY for the PlayStation (which would've netter the former about $7-10 billion), the arcade giant could've put money into marketing and game development for the Sega CD and Nomad, greatly expanding the already successful Genesis/Mega Drive platform, which finally reached about 40 million consoles sold. The Nomad would then have had enough games to last into the early Aughties, perhaps even as long as the PS1 in 2006.
Amazing video - this took me back through my childhood. I saw myself as primarily being a Nintendo guy, as I had a Gameboy, SNES and N64. But I also got a 2nd hand Game Gear and Mega Drive a few years down the line. The Mega Drive was a bit of a stopgap between the SNES and N64 and I got to go back and play the classics I'd missed when I was focused on the SNES
There's a song playing in the video which sounds a whole lot like Janet Jackson's 'everywhere i go'. I wonder if some producer heard some kid playing a gameboy and thought : "no one will notice if i steal this"
Great video but the only thing that I dont remember to live that at all was the arcade been drying by the late 80s and early 90s. I remember the arcade places full of people, playing every games like Double Dragon, TMNT, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Street Fighter, Narc and many mores. Yes by 91 or 92 once Street Fighter II released it changed the arcades to fighting games everwhere, SF, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, after that you wont see a new beatem up, everything was fighting games, racing and light guns games. Arcade rooms started to dry by early 2000s.
Personally, I think Nintendo deserved the success they had with the NES in North America. They took a big chance releasing it just after the video game crash and were very clever with the way it was marketed as an 'entertainment system' rather than a 'video game' system. At the same time, with their predatory anti-competitive licensing scheme and the horrific reliability of the NES front loader they also deserved being curb stomped by Sega after being blind sided by the Genesis / Mega Drive. They got too arrogant and needed to be brought down to size for their own good.
Nintendo saved the home console industry in the US, but they did what they did to make money, and money they made plenty of. Now Nintendo of today, don't much care for them at all.
Street Fighter 2 World Warrior being released on SNES was a game changer. That set the standard for arcade to home ports. Few lived up to that bar (Turtles in Time, MK2 and MK3, KI), everything else was an inferior port.
12:40 It's crazy hearing about Yuji Naka nowadays, he left and made Balan Wonderworld, and as much as I tried to like that game I couldn't get into it at all and it's going to be a commercial failure.
Oh totally dude! I ended up working at my local rental store for a while back home. However after moving to Japan, where renting games is illegal because of Nintendo, gamer peeps I get chatting with are shocked that we could rent games overseas. Despite people here being able to rent comics and cds, even after ripping became common with iTunes. But what really blew my mind is right next to the rental cds they would sell blank cds. 😂😂😂😂 But renting games is a big no no. Those kind of contradictions are everywhere.
This was awesome. I started off with my Genesis, being a huge sports fan. But as time went on I grew to love the snes as well. I still mourn the death of the Dreamcast. I purchased it at midnight day one. Now I'm a Playstation guy, but I own and appreciate the xbox and 360 as well.
The launch of the snes was actually amazing by Christmas and i remember genesis’s first holiday was also amazing. Today holiday launches have 1 good game if you’re lucky, it was so much better quality back then
This video is awesome…it wasn’t until I almost got to the end that I realized I wasn’t a subscriber to your channel. I quickly corrected that…new subscriber!!!
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Haven’t finished the whole video yet but wanted to comment. Lived through these years. Kirby on gameboy was huge back then.
as a kid i owned and preferred genesis. now that im an adult i prefer snes. just cause im a huge rpg fan now though. shining force and phantasy star just cant compete with ff6 chrono trigger and mario rpg
I was lucky i have a big brother who's 10 years older than me so we had both the Snes and Genesis in my house but i absolutely loved the Genesis seeing that Aladdin game really brought back memories i was 5 or 6 when that came out and remember playing it for hours
@@rgm4646 The PC Engine did pretty good in Japan, it's just the US where it hit a snag, and really wasn't advertised properly. I rarely saw TG-16 commercials on TV.
I remember the legendary wars of my childhood! What a great time in the 90's for entertainment that would shape the soul of our country and the world! You had the Console wars ( Sega vs Super Nintendo), The Monday Night Wars of wrestling ( WCW vs WWF), The Hip Hop wars ( West coast vs East Coast), The Late Night wars ( Leno vs Letterman), The boy band wars ( Backstreet Boys vs N'Sync), The Burger wars ( McDonald's vs Burger King), The Desktop Wars (Microsoft vs Apple), The Comic Book wars ( DC vs Marvel), Soda wars ( Coke vs Pepsi). So many hard fought wars that were fought in the prime of my childhood that defined the 90's and a generation. While some had clear winners, and others had clear losers, we all ended up winning a defining

Everyone was your friend when you passed fatalitys arround and then home, triing it out before a whole group of kids, and if it worked? As if your in a soccer stadium everyone screeems
That fatality of liu kang mortal kombat 3 where he sets you on fire. Forwward 2 times down 2 times lowkick (button c it was on the megadrive and butten a it was on the super nintendo. All the versions played from the first 3 mortal kombat games even the game boy variants. And we all know what happened with the portable console wars nintendo wins that as well because when the psp released, the game boy advance was already bowed down for the nintendo ds i mean, look what happens with the psvita it was when the 3ds was out discontinued. And yes now is the 3ds also discontinued but at the end, a console or thing is dead when you dont have fun with it anymore even after its life. The game boy was around from 1989 all the way up to 2003 it slams the game gear away kaboom like a basebal bat hahahahahahaha
I am 36 and 90s was the best ara for video game rivalry, i had a snes loved Mario world Mario paint gradius 3 my favorite game is still super ghouls n ghost, was Introduced into sega when visiting my step dads family in New york I got to try outrun and sonic 2 and Mortal kombat 2 loved the game play the music the way the announcer voice commands Fight! The blood the fatalitys blew my mind as a kid I can't remember what else I played but my brother and I wanted one, we got one for Christmas a model 2 around the time sonic spinball was out, so we got eternal champions, sonic spinball, the jungle book, and asterix and the great rescue , and NBA jam TE, loved the genesis and buddy down the street would bring over golden axe 2 alisia dragoon road rash 2 shadow dancer, he had a lot of great games it showed me how great the system was, I still remember going to a game store game x change and getting ghouls n ghost still one of my favorite games. at some point I got sonic 2 mortal kombat 1 the 3 and sonic 3 primal rage and altered beast, the Lion King that tmnt fighters, street fighter 2 te, Mick and mac, sadly I stole money from my parents and got vector man and shinobi 3 lol but the genesis will always be one if my favorite classic consoles. I can't just say I like one cause snes n64 nes PlayStation ps2 dreamcast I still play these today and I'm glad I got to grow up in the 90s.
The biggest issue with Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive was the garbled audio. The SNES version was far better. Mortal Kombat 1 was closer to the arcade on SNES than on Genesis but the blood issue killed it. However, Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES was a monumental success. It was such a brilliant port as opposed to the woeful version on Genesis.
Being an 85er these two consoles are both absolute Goats but as a kid the SNES was always my favorite and it remains that way to this day but there's no denying the Genesis gave me some of my greatest memories in video gaming and holds some of my all time favorite games..damn i wish i had a time machine but at least i can play all my favorites on my phone for free.. something i could've never imagined would happen back when games cost up to $70(like $130-140 in today's money) and me being pretty poor as a kid going to Toys R Us or mom and pop stores seeing games wishing i had em and now I can play em anytime anywhere...these 2 consoles will always be in my top 10 ...thanx for the video and memories bruh
As an old man grew up in the early 90s I'm grateful for having lived through this great console war. Super Nintendo will be my all time favourite but I enjoyed hanging around my friend's house because he had the Mega Drive. I used to be a diehard Nintendo fanboy but I learned a lesson when Sega quit making consoles. Now I hope both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S do well because this means good future for the console gaming industry.
This was a great documentary. As a 90s kid, I was fortunate to have the best of both worlds. I was a Sega boy while my neighbor friends had SNES, so we were constantly trading off to try each other's games.
I wouldn't say easily. The mega drive had some truly awesome games. Golden axe, double dragon, NBA jam, Michael Jackson's moonwalker, pit fighter, streets of rage. The list goes on and on. And the games the two consoles shared almost always looked better on the sega. But Imo the greatest game of all was on the snes. Tmnt 4 turtles in time.
@@Bloodreign1 Just because it sells more does not mean that it's the better console, it being better completely depends on someone's opinion to be honest.
I had both SNES and a Genesis as a child, up until my adulthood I always told people that the Genesis was worthless and that without the Shining Force games there would literally be no reason to own one. I downloaded the Sega Genesis Classics Collection on XBOX and am now finding more games that made system worth it.
Worthless?! Lol you obviously never played the other games the genesis had like streets of rage, all the shinobi games robocop vs terminator, Aladdin and shadow dancer just to name a few. The shoot ‘em ups were good too
Great Doc!!! Thank You!! I Really Enjoyed it! I had starting in 1982 or 83 the TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI99/4A with Many Games ,NES in 1987, then GENESIS, SEGA CD, 32X then PLAYSTATION, DREAMCAST, PS2, Finally the PS4 I currently have. Still got them all including Robbie the Robot for original NES. Keep up the Great Work!! Peace and Love
I own both consoles, like the both of them, but yeah ther last few years all of a sudden people have turned on the SNES, despite how much of a beast it truly is. People like to discredit the games for using custom chips, but Nintendo did that on purpose, and that in turn allowed the console to have a longer lifespan than it would've had otherwise. By the time it died in Japan, the PS2 had already come along.
I don't think Sega ever made a great controller. Not with the Genesis, Saturn, or Dreamcast. While SNES is top 3 for me. Dreamcast was my 2nd all-time favorite console. GameCube surpassed it.
@@DanBlabbers Uh dude, I was a teenager & hard core NES and SNES gamer during the SNES and Genesis battle, and it was NEVER sounded out as a word by gamers but as letter-by-letter acronym. To the contrary my young friend who was born after the SNES existed, the only people who would pronounce “SNES” as a word were those that weren’t gamers such as news anchors on TV. Your friend being a collector of retro games is irrelevant, that doesn’t mean your friend knows what he’s talking about. Your friend was clearly not alive during that era in gaming and as such is pronouncing “SNES” the way someone would who had no exposure to the timeframe that the SNES was on the market. Nothing against your friend, he’s just saying the system’s name wrong.
@@DanBlabbersdefinitely not a casual thing. I honestly didn’t start hearing it called as a word until youtube. Everyone and their grandmothers referred to it by the letters whether they were a hardcore gamer or a casual.
You’re right, I honestly was annoyed when I first started hearing it a couple years ago but I guess I just learned to accept that’s just the way some people want to call it now. I still refer to that and the nes by the letters though

Sonic were the only games that appealed to me on the Genesis. And I played QuackShot, Cool Spot, Aladdin, and have the Sega classics pack with Shinobi, Ristar, Vectorman, and Streets of Rage.
It was for fast games, schumps, beat em ups, racing etc extra speed for fighting games brought speed to a genre before it was the direction of the industry.
its always annoying to hear the 32X was a failure when SEGA simply dropped it. failure and stopping support are two different things. while it was supported by SEGA it was doing fine with happy customers.
I agree I was one of those happy Customers. virtua fighter was amazing the graphics were crisp and next generation it was an example of what could have been had Sega not discontinued it and boy that sucked a big fat One
This is such an INCREDIBLE video, so in depth and full of video footage of games. I was lucky enough the have the Genesis and the SNES, but I was more of a Sega fan, as I had the Sega CD as well as the 32x, and then the Saturn and Dreamcast. Fun Fact: "The Great Console War" is a riff on the youtube channel "The Great War". I originally conceived an idea of covering the series in a more militaristic tone before I really had a strong idea of what my style was. There was even going to be a prologue and epilogue like it was some sort of long forgotten story.

No one gives a shit.
To me this war was way more intense than Sony vs Microsoft. Young people would never understand how great the war was between these two systems. They both came out during the same times and both had very marketable mascots that catapulted into stardom. They actually still have battles to this day but with other means including TV shows.
Agreed, there were literally playground wars here in the uk but with the Amiga vs the St.
Back then l would SMACK an SNES owner if l saw one. Genesis was KING in my hood 😅
Mortal Kombat was better on the Sega Genesis but Super Street Fighter 2 was better on Super Nes. Shinobi was a Sega exclusive though.
@@KoolKeithProductions man wtf?!

Incredible work. Really appreciate the time and energy and quality. Those two hours flew by (even with frequent rewinding to take in all the information and visuals. A+

Retro gaming has been done to death on YT. People who are interested in retro gaming have already seen videos of their retro gaming interests.
Cause he cant say Ro-sen...its not Ros-sin!
@@revolvingworld2676 Nintendo is a parallel game universe. The Pokemon games are not so much game.
Same here I was a Sega dude, but enjoyed playing SNES over friends and cousins house.
Early 93 of February I got mine and Sonic 1 came with it. Although I first played one the summer of 91 and blew my mind.
I owned a Genesis by Feb 1992. I owned an SNES by Apr 1994. I rooted for Genesis for most of their war. But looking back, SNES was much better. A top 3 all-time console for me.
Disagree. I had both n imo, they were tied. One wasnt better than the other. Each had stellar exclusives, the other didnt.
Because buying into marketing makes you look so mature. lol.
I rooted for Sega too...but they both have their charm. Even the TG16 was pretty good despite being destroyed ^_^
Dude... I LOVE watching your stuff. We gotta get you into the algorithm somehow
He's there now, this was in my recommendations today
Yup, I’m normie as fuck, and this was recommended. This channel is bout to blow up.
This is exactly the kind of content I watch but it was recommended to me too. I think that's mission accomplished.
Yes we should

8:45 What music did you use there?
In the early days I would say these MD games also stood out: Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Thunder Force 2-3, Phantasy Star II, Castle of Illusion, Gaiares, MUSHA, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Quackshot, Warsong/Langrisser, Starflight, Spider-Man vs Kingpin, King's Bounty
The good MCD games were generally not FMV-based, I'd recommend checking out games like Lunar 1-2, Snatcher, Bari Arm and SoulStar.
1:02:00 Good music choice lol
This was so well done. Thank you for such a great video, you've got a talent for this!
We need more comments to get this guy into the algorithm.
I didnt even grow up with sega but i still have love for it! Both consoles are awesome in their own right
SEGA!!! This was very well done, good job. My childhood gaming was defined in this era. Sega flamed out late but the Genesis was an all time great system.
This is a wonderfully thorough look at the 4th Generation and it’s Console Wars. Well done.
words can't describe how much i thoroughly enjoyed this video.
The dying of nfl2k5 destroyed gaming for me.

Was the only games i played in the ps3 era consistently
My 3rd to 6th gen Sega and Nintendo systems are:
SC-3000, Master System 1, "consolised" Game Gear, Mega Drive 1, Mega Drive 2 (with Mega CD 2 and 32X), Saturn, Dreamcast, handheld Game Gear and Nomad, and I want to get a Pico :P
Famicom AV, Super Famicom (with Super Game Boy 1 & 2), Nintendo 64 and GameCube (with Game Boy Player), two original Game Boys, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, GBA SP AGS-001, GBA SP AGS-101 and Game Boy micro 😄
Always comfy videos. Thanks for the great work you do.
This was awesome. I lived this era of early video game rivalry, and this vid brought back so many fun memories of my childhood. Great job.
That, was brilliant. Hats off to you for creating that.
Megadrive and SNES were my childhood, the first consoles that my parents bought us. Castle of Illusion, Smash TV and Alex Kidd were just some of my faves on the Megadrive.
Already watched whole series.
Great video.
I DEFINITELY APPRECIATE THIS... THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD

Owning every single game in the 16bit war is everything.
this comment gives me vibes of that mario 64 speedrun from 2004 that was proven to be fake because the guy who did it boasted in a youtube comment
I'd rather have real hardware but yeah
Excellent video, well-researched, informative and entertaining enough to keep me interested for 100 minutes!

"Tetris went on to become the best selling Gameboy game of all time"
uh what lol
Bundled does not mean free
You bought it as part of a bundle, it was sold. End of story.
It's weird it feels like the history repeat it self about boosting load times, graphics, power etc.

The Sega nomad was by far the best handheld I ever owned, right up until I got a PSP and then a PS Vita
Seriously, it was amazing being able to play genesis games on the go, especially since I could bring a controller and have fully functional multiplayer
Battery life was atrocious though, even with expensive batteries
it's a shame white LEDs weren't a thing back then, as the battery life doubles in Nomads and Game Gears with LED backlights / LED-backlit screens swapped in (until 1998, it was most cost effective to use the sort of colour screens that had to be backlit with miniature fluorescent lamps and their associated circuitry that converted battery power to high voltage)
Been waiting for this 👏👏👏
Just Wanna Say Tank You For Making These Videos 🙏💯💯💯🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
really fantastic work. appreciate it.
There's a song playing in the video which sounds a whole lot like Janet Jackson's 'everywhere i go'. I wonder if some producer heard some kid playing a gameboy and thought : "no one will notice if i steal this"
It's always sad to see videos about SEGA's demise as a console maker. They sabotaged themselves though.
Great overview! Music background choices were great 👍 👊
Thanks for another trip down memory lane dude. Love the video.
12:40 It's crazy hearing about Yuji Naka nowadays, he left and made Balan Wonderworld, and as much as I tried to like that game I couldn't get into it at all and it's going to be a commercial failure.
BAI GAMING: Yuji Naka's career declined significantly. Meanwhile the creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto gained legendary status
I've watched this video multiple times and will watch multiple more times and still learn and find it interesting. Well done sir!
The best thing about this home console war was you could rent all of these systems and not actually have to buy them
That’s cool!! I grew up in the 2000s so we only had blockbuster to rent games and moves from really
Let me guess you only returned them after court orders
Oh totally dude! I ended up working at my local rental store for a while back home.
However after moving to Japan, where renting games is illegal because of Nintendo, gamer peeps I get chatting with are shocked that we could rent games overseas.
Despite people here being able to rent comics and cds, even after ripping became common with iTunes. But what really blew my mind is right next to the rental cds they would sell blank cds. 😂😂😂😂
But renting games is a big no no.

I have a Sega Genesis as my only retro console and while I like the system I still don't think it holds a candle to the SNES.
@@Bloodreign1 when my friend lent me DKC in 1994, I knew the console war was as good as over. I lent him Mario all stars in turn.

I don't think Sega ever made a great controller. Not with the Genesis, Saturn, or Dreamcast. While SNES is top 3 for me. Dreamcast was my 2nd all-time favorite console. GameCube surpassed it.
The Sega three button was comfortable in big hands but the lack of six buttons hurt it alot.
The Saturn pad was alright, enough so that it was remade for the PS2, and is quite costly to buy one today.
Man, This is damn good video. Great work
The SNES wasn't pronounced sounding it out as a regular word, it was pronounced by saying the actual letters, like "FBI" or "CIA".
Uh dude, my friend is a collector of the rarest SNES games and he says it as a word. Only casuals say S N E S
We did as kids back in the 90s. It was just easier to say.
Amazing and truly fantastic video!!!! My god... My time just flew by and all the wonderful memories, I'm glad that my passion still burns and I'm fortunate, to be able to have everything I have and everything I never could as a child🔥🔥🔥 ty for this fantastic video
Nintendo was amazing and is the godfather of all game systems!! But Sega took games to a whole new level that is still felt to this day 👨🏫👌
Sonic were the only games that appealed to me on the Genesis.
Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion are also a couple cool games for the Genesis. Hell I find them far better than Quackshot.
Genesis > SNES
SNES>Genesis

Mortal Kombat Sega genesis won that battle
Some hiccups in the research, but the final result shows hours of work and care, I’m glad to have watched.
its always annoying to hear the 32X was a failure when SEGA simply dropped it. failure and stopping support are two different things. while it was supported by SEGA it was doing fine with happy customers.
I agree I was one of those happy
Customers. virtua fighter was amazing the graphics were crisp and next generation it was an example of what could have been had Sega not discontinued it and boy that sucked a big fat

This is such an INCREDIBLE video, so in depth and full of video footage of games. I was lucky enough the have the Genesis and the SNES, but I was more of a Sega fan, as I had the Sega CD as well as the 32x, and then the Saturn and Dreamcast. My next Nintendo Console I owned was 25 years or so later, the Nintendo Switch.
