Royal Enfield Classic 350, Speedo Problems. Do I need another Bike?

  • Hello,
    Thanks for joining me.
On the way home from the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride my Speedo started to play up.
It was reading far too high and then when switched off the needle settled at 20 mph.
Classic symptoms of a knackered Speedo that many other owners seem to have experienced.
The problem was I self serviced my bike which apparently could invalidate my warranty.
What to do? I ask the question.
Have a look to see the response.
    Thoughts turn to,
Do I need or want a second bike?

Mate, the dealer is bluffing about the warranty! You are protected under your British consumer rights law. He gave you that speedo because he had to by law, he wasn't doing you a favour, he was doing his job! Stuart Fillingham has made an excellent video explaining much better than I can why dealers can't do that. Seriously mate know your rights. I mean no disrespect, sorry if I sound pushy, I just get really cross when dealers bullshit to good people like yourself.

I watched a video by “Riding with Warro” - he fixed the speedo by spraying some contact cleaner in the connector assembly, worked like a charm. When my Classic 350 speedo went wonky I did the same thing, worked like charm. No need for warranty or replacement, or dealerships. Easy 10 minute fix

Hi John, that's interesting as I don't think mine is suffering from the warped backing plate issue.
It's working OK as we speak but if it " goes again" my first port of call will be as you suggest.

I own a Classic 350 and my speedo is absolutely spot on.
Whilst I do acknowledge certain failings in the Classic such as a lack of power and poor quality wheel spokes the accuracy of the speedo is definitely not a problem.

I had three speedos replaced under warranty. The problem with mine was the face of the gauge bulges and contacts the needle. As you found out wherever it sticks is the “new zero”. Changing the speedo takes almost ten minutes to do. The speedo is a sealed unit so there’s no fixing it without cutting it apart. Glad they treated you right!

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels  Місяць тому

      Thanks For that.
3 speedos is beyond a joke is it not.
It would surely be cheaper for them to just do a redesign and swipe them out.
You would imagine that Royal Enfield themselves would have a claim against the Speedo manufacturer.
They sorted me out OK, but it's disappointing to hear these tales!

I fancied a classic seventies bike, a trip back to my teens and all that. Then I thought, since I’ve had the meteor I’ve twice had the abs kick in…. Then there’s maintenance and parts to think about, these days I just want to get on and enjoy the ride.

Keith, I know exactly where you're coming from with your 2nd bike wishes. My Himalayan's taken me around Scotland and Spain on a regular basis, but last Sunday my oldest lad turned up on a '07 Transalp so I took it around the block (a long block!) .... I’ve just inherited an Enfield meteor from an old friend who passed away, lovely man, it’s two years old with 400 miles on it, I ride a Kawasaki gtr 1400, so it’s a huge drop in power but I just love it, it’s comfortable, it’s cheap to run, it’s ideal for traffic, and it looks and sounds wonderful, thank you Dave, I really appreciate you leaving me this little gem.

I think the lower powered Enfields make a great second bike. I have the 411 Himalayan and it's great when I want to potter around the lanes in either the Peak District or North Wales. If I need to either get somewhere quickly or need to use faster roads then I do have a much more powerful bike which is a lot more relaxing than thrashing the 411.

Great news on the warranty issue, I was hoping they would treat you right if the need ever presented itself! Sorry that it did though. Test rides are dangerous😂, just like watching videos of these little Classics. That is what hooked me seeing the Classic design and hearing the sounds and comments. Absolutely no regrets with Lil' Darlin", but I do like having a few options in the stable for different riding situations and moods (although I am considering cutting back to three, I'm not sure that I need 2 "big bikes" anymore getting hard to balance road time for them all). The little Classic has brought back simple riding enjoyment often overlooked on the big powerful machines. You have room, life is short, enjoy a little self indulgence, keep the beautiful little Classic and add a mate for it that you find suits you best! You have no doubt worked hard and now it's time to enjoy life a little! Stay safe and may the blessings continue for you!

I have been looking at other, bigger stuff and not just ' dropped on one" yet.
I'm sure I will, something will pop up and it's like many things, everything will align, and I will jump in. Probably.
You're right, I have a vid coming on Sunday where I continue the muttering and musings of weather to or not.

      around New England.
Maybe it's not too late to do it again.
We had a TV program on recently where teams were racing across Canada, that looked wonderful too.
So many places and the clocks ticking, I do think also that as you get a bit older you start to lose your mojo, lose the energy and desire to do trips like that.
      maybe.🤔

The speedo issue has me feeling down. I knew of it when I was first interested in the classic. There was internet rumor that RE was going to have it fixed from the ‘23’s onward. Sadly we all know that’s not the case. It makes me feel regretful about choosing the classic even though I really like it. I find myself questioning if I will keep it long term. If you have one for many years, you could have to potentially change multiple speedos out.

Morning Keith, Ive not had this problem with my Classic 350, I've done 5,750 miles so far .
But I did have the speedo issue with my Interceptor and it was sorted no question and I'd done all the servicing myself. On my bike it was the speedo sensor wire and it was intermittent, fine one day then up the wall the next! 😆
Glad you got sorted without any problems.
I think some dealers are unnecessarily unhelpful because they've not had any money from buyers for servicing.
As for another bike, yeah you can never have enough if them, but if you're going for a bit more grunt get something more modern from the last twenty years or so , still cheap but will be reliable ,

I had the problem with the speedo last year, took it out, (a few minutes, dead easy), sprayed the connector and it seemed to fix it but it came back and eventually was replaced under warranty. They did it in under 10 minutes, outside the dealership and have had no problems since (almost 2,000 miles on new speedo) They gave me a signed document, showing original mileage of old speedo, which was 3,300 miles.

There seems to be (so far) two possible problems you can have with the speedo. One, as some have mentioned,, seems to be a problem with too much grease in the electrical connectors which can be fixed by cleaning. The other, which Tiger Ness @tigerness5555 explains on his channel, is that the dial lifts and traps the needle. That one doesn't seem fixable, so new speedo required.

I'm sorry, the dealership suggested you take them some biscuits when they supply a part that failed under warranty but refuse to fit it?! If the aren't playing ball because Enfield are tight when it comes to warranty rates that's not your, the customers, fault. If they don't like the way Enfield work they shouldn't sell them rather than short change the customer because they're being short changed by the importer. Thanks for calling out the dealer.

I agree, but To be absolutely honest the dealer is aware that I am happy to do the work myself so the actual question of fitting the part wasn't for me at least an issue.
They may well have offered to fit it, especially as I have been told in these comments that it is a quick and easy job. The Truth is that fitting wasn't mentioned by me. I don't think that would have been a problem.

RE should do a recall urgently on the sticking speedo issues as this poses a real risk to your licence with so many speed cameras both fixed and mobile in use today. Wales would be especially bad with the 20mph zones, going from a 50mph straight into a 20mph, even Leek has a few fixed cameras placed to catch you out. Do you think RE would provide legal representation to fight the case?😂😂😂😂😂

    All my own servicing .
2 years now and a little condensation occasionally in the speedo.
Ebay 85 quid for a new speedo but its main display is Kph with secondary in mph.
Perfectly legal to use these in the UK
Still way way cheaper than paying the silly servicing prices
If I have to I'll buy one of those.
As you rightly say checking the valves and an oil change has nothing to do with the speedo not working.
Cleaning the plug couplers with WD40s switch cleaner may well help.
They put way too much lithium grease in all the connectors on their bikes and high resistance is also well known.

The speedo issue, no it doesn't affect the Meteor and is unique to the Classic. The original issue was caused by heat/sunlight on the glass allowing the glass to distort and trap the needle at its pivot point. As a temporary fix put a corn plaster over the glass at its pivot point which tends to help as sunlight is kept directly away from the glass.
The modified Speedo has a different glass fitted to it which is supposedto alleviate the issue. I've had 3 Classics (Halcyon Grey/Signals Green/Halcyon Black currently) and each one has had the problem. I'm also hearing of owners who are still having the problem after a new Speedo head has been fitted, they are of chinese manufacture by the way. Good luck with fitting it, from what I understand it's a bit of a ball ache to fit and certainly takes a lot lot longer than 10minutes to fit. I waited 1 1/2 hours at my dealers to fit mine. Make sure you note the mileage too, it will be at zero on the replacement as the ECU doesn't store the information.🙂👍

Personally speaking, me myself and I, would keep the 350 and fit the Performance cam'. If that's still not enough power increase, why not have an Interceptor 650? Cost is the reasoning behind my thinking. I can't immediately think of another manufacturer giving such value for money, unless you look at Chinese bikes which people say are much improved nowadays.
    Cheers Keith

Thanks for commenting, I don't think the performance cam is, personally, my answer.
It won't increase, top end, wind protection, luggage carrying ability, or space.
Again I know the Interceptor but I feel it's just a bigger classic 350, not knocking it at all just my thoughts.
If I'm going to do it I don't want to get it wrong and feel maybe go for a bigger adventure bike, Triumph Tiger sport 660?

One thing we should remember: Bike manufacturers would be taking a big risk if they simply said, "Go ahead, its ok, you can all service your own bikes, and we will still give full warranty benefits on your bike, regardless". While many bikers are fully competent mechanics, we should be mindful that vast numbers are actually clueless. With 'how to' videos on UA-cam often times telling us all that servicing is a doddle, plenty of folk are minded to have a go, when they definitely shouldn't! A surprisingly large number of riders don't even know how to tension a drive chain. I know of one chap who burned out a clutch on a honda in no time because he didn't understand the need to have 10mm of free play at the lever. So he wound all the free play out of the cable because the lever was wobbly! The first he knew there was a problem, was when the bike refused to pull away. And I know of plenty of people who have significantly overfilled their engines with oil because they checked the level with the bike on its side stand. People with this level of skill should not be allowed to retain warranty benefits after working on their own bikes. And there is no way for Royal Enfield or any other manufacturer to know if you fall into the perfectly capable or perfectly clueless category. We we all have to be treated with caution. And people shouldn't blame the dealers. The manufacturers define the terms and conditions, not the dealers. A dealer can't authorise a warranty claim. They can only view, report and register the claim. It has to be authorised by Royal Enfield (or whoever). As for certain people i know being allowed to have a go at adjusting their own valve clearances, I wouldn't let some of them fetch me a bag of chips! They would probably forget the salt and vinegar. 😂

      Very well put.
I do remember an old acquaintance of mine who changed some front brake disc pads on a bike for another lad.
Can't remember the bike in question.
But I do remember him riding down the road only to find the brake didn't work and was screeching horrendously.
The fellow in question had put them in 100% backwards.
From them on we all nicknamed him "Ferodo".
But you put it much more eloquently than I ever could

    • @Trev350

And another one for you ...a bloke I used to ride with about 20 years ago had a CBR650R. One November he put his bike away for winter and he was concerned that his brakes might go rusty over the winter. So, he liberally sprayed, both brake discs and calipers with WD40🤪. Come spring he got his bike out and rode to the end of his street and put his brakes on. Nothing happened. He ended up stopping by dragging his boots on the road. That guy is now a member of The Institute of Project Managers. He should have known better than that; but he didn't. And that's why we are expected to present our bikes for servicing by the dealer. We shouldn't blame the dealers for this situation; it's not their fault.

Anyway, when the GN250 came here in 1987 for £1900 (like seven grand in 2024 money) it was expensive cause it was a real made in Japan solid motorbike. I have one now and it beats these cheap REs hands down.

That's correct, firstly, strictly speaking we are not under EU law. We left!
But ,and to be fair we did adopt the regulations that we were under when we were in the EU.
As trev350 says motorcycles were never under the same block exemption regs that cars were.
That is why motorcycle manufacturers can insist that they or the authorized service centers service the bike. Having said all that, if you change your oil and you're engine seizes it's probably your problem.
If something packs up that should last the life of the bike, eg, a Speedo then surely they should sort it.
And they did , without quibble.

My speedometer cluster failed. After getting the "run around" from the dealership I called royal enfield north America corporate headquarters. After a few weeks of going around and around with some bad communications they said that they would warranty claim my issue. The service dealership did a poor job installing the new speedometer cluster. It was loose and rattled all the way home. The dealership already proved to me that they are incapable of taking care of their customers. I fixed my speedometer. I now have a bike for sale for really cheap. Not the motorcycles fault. I want to think that I am lucky to get away from royal enfield for proving to me that they don't have the essential knowledge, passion, or skills to represent the royal enfield brand in North America.

At the end of the day it is down to Royal Enfield, they choose who represents them from in the market.
The Speedo issue should be a recall to sort it out once and for all.
