  • Most collectibles have paint on them to make them look like the source material as much as possible. Others try to get by with nothing more than molded plastic. Will the lack of paint be enough to dissuade people from buying this one?

    You’re absolutely right.I’ve been getting more and more disillusioned with Legends lately and the main reason is the lack of paint.I think the biggest (literally) let down,for me,was the sentinel.When I got that thing in hand and saw how little it was detailed I just thought WTF am I doing giving this company my money? They’re just getting lazier and lazier and it’s depressing.

  • @JLS_

    You should do some black series reviews the articulation usually isn’t the best but the detail an paint is great almost every time

  • @mkl4466
    @mkl4466 2 роки тому +6

    I don't expect 100% of the surface area to be painted. In some cases, get the color of the plastic right and that's all you need. Washes and dry brushing are certainly nice to bring out the details, but large areas and joints should be molded in the proper color so they aren't dependent on paint. The exception for me to that is when there is visible marbling that detracts from the overall feel of the character, such as the streaks on your figure's torso. That's no good.
    I don't have any attachment to this character. I mostly know the version of the H E that was the antagonist in Spider-Man Unlimited, which is a completely different look. I wasn't going to pick this one up, but I got it used loose in a package deal and so I played around a little with it. What I discovered is that I do like the hands and they work really well with some energy effects, like molding a fire ball. This is a fun body for head swaps and creating cybernetic/armored versions of other characters. Pop a Spidey or Iron Man head on this body and it takes on an entirely new life.

    The paint thing does bug me, I often find myself adding paint, which is unacceptable even if you have the knowhow, especially considering the price hike.
    What bothers me more personally, and is something you mention in every review without fail, is the proportions, particularly the weirdly placed and totally undersized shoulders. That one thing is my dealbreaker and totally puts me off certain figures.

      Same for me, some are very good like the big four on their 80th anniversary versions, Armored Daredevil, Wolverine but they miss more than hit imo, I'll keep getting some releases though, wish I could get a Cyclops Jim Lee style from the three pack or Warlock wave, the ones available are really rough

    Ok, second comment that is completely unrelated to my first.
    An 8 out of 10!? I don't disagree with whatever you decide to score, but I'm shocked that you rated it so highly after all of the issues you were pointing out.
    I swear, people need to actually watch these reviews. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it that "Anthony is a hater" and "he way too harsh, only talks negative, takes the fun out of collecting, yada yada," and all sorts of other nonsense. Which is ridiculous because he's the best. Nobody else is going to point out all of these faults and then still give it a fair and honest score. I swear, these critics just can't tolerate anybody pointing out any problems with their coveted and treasured toy line.
    Anthony gives you all of the info you need, and then leaves it up to you to decide if you want to buy it. I love that.

    Without paint, many of these new Marvel Legends look like up-scaled kiddy toys. 6" and an adult price point does not make it an "adult collectible", IMO. It needs to have something extra and lately ML has been giving the bare minimum. There is not a lot on the ML horizon that I plan on buying.

    • @satch4684
      @satch4684 2 роки тому +1

      I disagree, even though they do have many faults. Basically I think that is exactly what they are, scaled up kiddy toys, so that they have appeal to both markets. In comparison to pure collectors marvel figures, like Mafex, I don't think they are nearly worth the price.

    • @AnthonysCustoms
      @AnthonysCustoms  2 роки тому +6

      there is definitely a market for lower end collectibles from domestic companies. these arent meant to be kiddy toys. the variety of characters and baf parts tell us that. it doesnt really matter anyway because the product doesnt match the price. if theyre meant to be kiddie toys, the price needs to come down. if the price is staying where it is, the product needs to be better.

    • @satch4684
      @satch4684 2 роки тому

      @@AnthonysCustoms yeah I get what you are saying I feel like they are simply trying to corner both markets and sell to children/older kids as well as adult collectors like us. But there is no price range that for the most part looks like the characters right out of the comics marvel universe with such wide variety so I like them for that. Selects are the wrong scale and look too stylized/realistic as opposed to an animated/comic style

    I'm mixed with paint cause I hate it scraping off. Maybe I'm in the minority that doesn't treat them like display statues. Then again the older figures I have with paint that isn't just caked on and chalky have lasted fine. I feel like I'd prefer no paint instead of crappy and splotchy application.

  • @onilpatel
    @onilpatel 2 роки тому +1

    In most cases, I can get by without painted shading if it's a pre-90s design. May even prefer no paint over bad paint (like on Beast). Especially if it means getting a great new sculpt.

  • @fortressmattimus3984
    @fortressmattimus3984 2 роки тому +7

    I skipped this figure, and I have been skipping more Legends than I ever used to because of paint and other reasons. Hasbro really needs to fix several key issues:
    1. Paint
    2. Accessories - hands and heads are not enough. Also, the packaging doesn't count; don't make that an excuse.
    3. Unique sculpting - painting another bucky cap (or vulcan) and putting a new head isn't enough to feel unique or interesting. It's tiring.
    4. Gummy joints
    Until Hasbro addresses this, I will keep reducing my Legends purchases. I have my core characters that I want and I'm happy with them, but these less-known characters are not done well enough for me to want to buy them. Hasbro keeps increasing their price and they're getting quite close to other companies, but they can't compete with the value of other products at this similar price point. I am much happier giving my money for a superior product from other companies that aren't preaching to me or vilifying me. I'm willing to overlook that for a good product, but this ain't it.

  • @krisWolverine
    @krisWolverine 2 роки тому

    I agree with that, I've been thinking about it lately with figures like Kang, Psycho-Man and this one, the sculp is amazing but the lack of paint make them look cheap and more like a toy than a collectible. I believe that the budget goes in the sculpt rather than the paint, still no justification for the price. That's now $25

  • @AlphaProto
    @AlphaProto 2 роки тому

    I don't mind lack of paint as long as it is applied well, and hit with a good flat, or gloss coat.
    In most cases, I think I would rather have a glossy finish over metal plastic.
    Those metal plastics get marble swirls. They may also get brittle as over the years, like clear plastic.

    A huge problem with Hasbro Marvel Legends is that they've made so few innovations in 10+ entire years of pumping out the same five bodies over and over again. There is no excuse for them to continue pumping out that abused buckey cap mold. Make the double ball pegs correctly, fix the proportions by making a few new molds, and give the bare minimum of a paint wash and they might be worth 25 dollars. It is astounding how Diamond Select can continue to outclass any marvel legends figure in almost every way besides articulation (which has actually been getting better) but are in the wrong scale. If Neca can make almost perfect replicas of movies made 20 years ago, why can't hasbro? Maybe even hire some sculptures who have EVER SEEN A MUSCULAR HUMAN BODY BEFORE! Seriously, coming from personal experience with drawing and sculpting, it really is not overly complicated to make the figures have heroic proportions! What they need is an intervention where they think about the easily remedied problems with the line, and if what causes that is us voting with our wallets, then so be it. It's depressing seeing them bait consumers with nostalgia by continuing to make anniversary lines celebrating superior figures from decades ago because THEY KNOW how good the line used to be, what drew fans in from the beginning. Putting effort into figures is what makes them desirable, not inexcusable re releases of a stagnant line.

    I don't hate this ML but I'm forced to agree with your critics and I'm also tired of the same mistakes over and over. I can't understand why they won't rectify simple things that would easily and without having to invest any more money solve all of those issues. If they wanted to solve them for good they would have to invest some money because they needed almost all new molds and more paint but they could at least solve those issues from now on with the new molds and paint can be added any time they want. Hasbro is already charging as if they painted their figures, that's for sure.
    OFC action figures should be painted, there may be some cases were a bit of molded unpainted plastic would do the trick, in some very specific cases even a lot of molded unpainted plastic would do it but in most cases it wont so action figures should be painted. McFarlane Toys action figures have their issues (normally I don't like them that much) but they're painted and less expensive so it can be done for a low retail price.
    Thanks for the review Anthony.
