Yesterday I struck with strange writing question in Cambridge IETLS 4:
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of three of following as media for communiting information. State which you consider to be the most effective.
*Comics
*Books
*Radio
*Television
*Film
*Theatre
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
It was really difficult to answer and if I had struck with such a writing question in real IELTS exam, I definitely wouldn't have known what to do whatsoever!
Specially, I wouldn't have known how to paraphrase the question in introduction 🤷♂️

Hi, Chris! On your website, it is written that we should explain why we disagree and why we agree with viewpoints. But you said in your video that we should write just why we agree with the viewpoint that we defend. Could you please clarify?
It is sometimes concurred that freedom of speech is a basic human right that should not be regulated because expression is a part of checks and balances. However, I agree that censorship is needed because allowing unlimited speech to all can create hate speech.
On the one hand, it is argued that every human should be free to announce any opinion because it will contribute to check and balances of the community and government. In a sense, the moral compass of what is right and wrong can’t be decided by one view and people should be allowed their opinion to open a further discussion. For example, slavery was once seen as a standard practice without allowing the opinions of the opposed. Further advocacy allowed the government’s moral compass to act more reasonably and started to consider to opinions of the enslaved. In certain issues, the right to freedom of speech can be seen as vital.
On the other hand, censorship can be perceived as necessary to avoid discriminating and inappropriate language. When we allow full freedom of speech, we are also allowing racism, discrimination, and hateful words. This would cause the most harm for certain minority groups because the speech of one racist can create an army and even can escalate to physical attacks. In the 21st century, our general government’s moral compass is assumed to be more logical. Thus, I fully agree that some censorship is needed to regulate people freedom of speech in order to avoid hate crimes.
To conclude, although freedom of speech is a basic need to keep everyone’s morality in check-regulating hurtful topics that target minority groups through discrimination is needed to hinder any terrorist actions. I believe that enforcing a level of censorship to people’s speech is for the greater good.

You may state your opinion in a separate paragraph, and this paragraph is optional.
This is simple and straight forward, but is it alright to conclude every paragraph e.g putting a conclusion on introduction and the rest of the paragraphs?

As a 38-year-old, I really can't see what is so difficult about following the plan you lay out here naturally, without being walked through it. I mean, the task clearly and concisely says "Discuss both views and give your opinion". Well, discuss view #1, discuss view #2, then give your opinion, it's plain as day.
One thing I've also noticed is that students will replace the thing the task requires them to write about with an idea that's close but not the same. For instance, for your topic, they must think of why free speech is good and why censorship is good; but students might write why free speech is good and why it's bad, which isn't exactly the same.
Chris, I have one question for you. In the MBP 2, after writing view 1, explanation, example and you said that we should write ''I agree with this view''.
So do we just need to write just 1 sentence ''i agree with this view'' to end the MBP 2 or the sentence ''I agree with this view'' means that we need to explain more? Since you don not have a sample essay, I do not really understand that.

hi Chris) first of all thank you for you videos they really help. but i cant join ielts advatage web site, it is not allowed in my location so access is denied 😭 but i want to give some ques to clarify one thing. i always been given suggestion to write 2 ideas for MBP each: 2 ideas with supportive statement and example to MBP1 and the same to MBP2. but you always in your videos say one idea with good explanation in enough for one MBP. so i am confused what guidance and tactic i should follow to get 7< in ielts writing?

Hi i just have one doubt, lets say i have the following task -
"The idea of having a single career has become an old fashioned one. Multiple careers are in demand because of increasing growth opportunities and higher earning prospects. Discuss both views and give your opinion.". Here, it looks like it's a discuss and give your opinion type question. But, it feels like the second sentence is like giving the back up or answering the sentence 1. Can you help me understand this. I am confused about the agree/disagree when I want to partially agree or give a balanced opinion.
I understand that I need to state both sides when I write this. But should I still emphasize on one side?
For example
Thesis: "Although, I think ~~(disagree), I fundementally believe that ~~(agree)" So here, I emphasized that I agree but also stated other side.
Body 1 : disagree and why
Body 2 : agree and why
Conclusion: "In conclusion, although ~~(disagree), I am in favour of ~~(agree)" Here again, I emphasized on the agreement while I also mentioned the other side.
Is this a correct way to write? Or can I just write the partially agree essay without emphasizing on one side? (I need band 7+)
Has a positive/negative development essay to be written in the same way as the agree/disagree essay like above?

I have a question on the opinion essay that states, " xxx should limit A and do B instead."
Is it okay if my opinion is about (I agree with the statement, let's say) :
1. what happens if we do not limit A
2. The benefit of doing B
Or the specific question is addressed to the benefit of B, so I should write two benefits of B?
