I was in the Pitt Band. We had an awesome drum line. 😊 We had a blast staying at Daytona Beach. Long 20+ hour bus ride down and back. Hugh Ricky and the boys pummeled George Rodger. They had him crying at the end of the game. 😅 This brings back memories 😊
Sorry to be off-topic. I am looking for videos of the Pitt Panthers Football games from 1980 WITH commercials. as I was in one (well, my hands were). Please contact me if you have copies of the games with commercials intact.
Pitt really, really screwed this year. Should have been working over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Instead, a chump ND team went to help fill the building.
I think it was Marino who made the comment they could have beaten Georgia in the morning then Notre Dame in the afternoon or something like that. Pretty sure the bowl bids were announced before the Penn State game after Thanksgiving and they didn't want a 2 loss Pitt team playing Georgia so went instead with Notre Dame who I think did not have a loss but a tie.
No. Pitt lost to Florida State in regular season. With one week left in football, polls were 1) Geo Bulldogs, 2) Notre Dame had a tie 3) Florida State 4) Pitt 5) Oaklohoma ND got the Sugar Bowl invite with 1 game left against USC. ND lost to USC. If the BCS was here that year, things would have been different. Would have had GEO vs FSU. FSU beat Pitt, Nebraska that year. GEO beat ND, Sooners defeated FSU and Mich won against WASH to win Rose Bowl for BO I remember that back then Read 50 years of College Football. Available on Amazon
Yep. Sherrill even said he thought of passing on the A&M job and gambling he’d get the Bama job in 1983. Jackie knew he was going to have another big year with Pitt in 1982.
@@g.t.richardson6311 Marino was good in college except he got injured halfway thru 1980 and had a lousy game against Penn state his junior year in 81. Marino had a terrible senior year with a new OC and head coach.
@@christophernash1846 all good points, he was a good player in college but also had the benefit of many longtime nfl players and future hall of famers around him. How many college qbs ever had tackles like covert, may, fralic, not to mention Grimm, and a couple others. He was very good, not great in college. I’ve been to hundreds of Pitt games , still season ticket holder.
What everyone else has said, plus he was kind of a tweener...too small for NFL D line but not really a pro style linebacker. College game suited him better.
He started off that way. Played really well early. All Rookie and Pro Bowl years. But then some injuries and then a car accident really affected his play after that. Still solid after but not the playmaker he had been prior.

Most dominant defensive player I've ever seen in college football, for his whole career, hands down!!! He should've won the Heismen trophy!!!!!!
Props to Ricky Jackson! NFL HOF and Saint Legend
Interesting...George Rogers had a decent, solid but by no means spectacular NFL career, 7 years. All you could hope for.
Russ Grimm and Mark May. Hogs.
Pitt is the real 1980 national championship
Georgia had best record. Not best team. BYU 1984 was nadir of old system
@@nathaniellathy6559 You did not just compare this Pitt team to BYU
@@nathaniellathy6559 BY who?
incredible rip-off that Hugh Green didn't win the Heismen and Larry Fitzgerald as well!
Quit crying Dorsett won

@@thedivomeister6308 very fair explanation
Pitt should have beaten Florida State that year and plus they were more talented than Florida State
What is it with Parseghian and what might have been a tricky tack pass interference call?
pitt ranked #3 is absolute sham they were #1 and should be national titles
Hugh green on one side Ricky Jackson on the other!goodcluck.lol
Thank you
If Jackie Sherrell had waited, he may have been the coach at Alabama, 1983.
Jackie should have stayed one more year in 1982 and win the NC

Russ Grimm went from 212lbs to 270lbs. 'Roids.
He grew , and filled out , not unusual for a 17/18 year old and by this game he is 21/22 ,
It was 1980. More likely PBR and Iron City Beer.
Why no Marino?
