My God, those bone dry vocals are so refreshing. I can hear every characteristic of her voice. The melody is amazing and that break down section is haunting.
This characteristic had me hooked from the opening line. It’s like she’s singing directly into your ear

This song is such a kick in the gut. I could go on and on and on about how perfectly it captures those emotions, the atmosphere, the helpless sadness and anger at someone else’s actions…but instead I’ll just go listen to it again and enjoy how it makes me feel all the feels all over again.

I guess same+a bit more, I have the near exact story where pancakes for dinner was "our song" and Doomsday could very possibly be our ending song. she came out as lesbian on Halloween, broke up with me right after our Halloween party and I was throwing up my guts in a church because I didn't know how to take it lol, and it's funny because I was so eager to plan our future together and stuff but when it ended it was like damn there goes that

It's highly possible that my interpretation of this is entirely not what these creators intended, but there's clearly so much thought and effort and passion put into this project that I want to explain what I got out of a few elements of the video:
The moment when she puts the mask on (3:42) could be when she decides to put on a face/persona to convince him to feel bad for her (which doesn't work enough to make him stay because he thinks she's faking it and/or because he's a jerk). Through the process of trying to express to him how hurt she is and trying to convince herself to not let him get under her skin (or to get him out from under her skin, I guess, because he already has gotten under her skin), she "dies" like their relationship -- that's why she's still a skeleton when the mask comes off.
I LOVE the part with her stabbing the pomegranate (2:34) and how that connects to Persephone and Hades -- the motifs of death, betrayal, heartbreak, etc.
The lighting, OH MY GOD, the lighting -- the dark hallway with a light at the beginning rather than the end, the blinding light through the windows, the fluorescent dullness of the classroom, the sunset alone on the bleachers, the sunrise with him on the bleachers, the soft glow of the church, the dusty brightness of the funeral, the clarity of the field that fades to black, the spotlight on the stage in front of an empty theater -- it all expresses her feelings so well and (despite, or perhaps because of the variety in the intensity of the lighting) ties the whole story together visually.
There's so much specificity that communicates such clear emotion, both lyrically, instrumentally, and visually -- I could go on and on about how well this is crafted.
Every choice in this song and music video (and in all my ghosts, which is one of my new favorite songs) is so brilliant. The fact that music like this exists restores my faith in humanity; I can't wait for the album!

i think the death mask and her face painted is her coming to terms, he's left her and she's wallowing in self-pity in the ending of their relationship. she's like a walking skeleton, feeling empty.

My interpretation of this song is that she's going through grief, and she's not the one dying. The boyfriend who was always there for her is going to die soon, maybe because of suicide or illness. She doesn't want him to go, and there's some much pain. She's angry because he wouldn't stay for her, but he would stay forevermore for him. She wants everyone to celebrate him and say goodbye to his life, but he doesn't seem to notice her efforts. When she sings, "I don't get a choice in the matter, it's only the death of me," she means it metaphorically. Sure, she's not dying, but he is. Then, he's gone. She wants to hang on and make sure he doesn't get a bad name, but it's hard when he left her alone. She doesn't have a choice when he dies, ultimately hurting her with a wave of grief like death. If he would've stayed, she would've married him, but once he's gone, she feels free. It hurts, and there's no way to recover from it, but there's comfort and freedom beyond it. It hurts that the preacher says he's going to hell. It aches how he died on a holiday. Grief is wounding, and it can cause so much despair that it feels like death.
But, I don't know. That's just how I saw it.
that's actually a pretty interesting take, I like it. I think though she wrote it more about just the despair of loving someone who is completely selfish, and their final act (cheating, leaving, etc) causes such pain and then numbness it feels like dying.
I think it was my 9'th or 10th playthrough that I realized the priest is also the custodian.
I can't stop listening to this.

There was a moment in the 90s when the depth and talent for women singer-songwriter alt-rockers were phenomenal. Liz Phair, Juliana Hatfield, PJ Harvey, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple... many others. It was such an incredible period of themes and power and intelligent lyrics, as well as astonishing melody and music. I say this only because since then I've very rarely felt that in discovering a new artist. Definitely feels like you'd fit right amongst that illustrious pantheon.
