I think, how did the guy get there, and why is that beautiful dog following him? He's a bad guy stole the car. It's definitely an emotional affair, for him. He got dragged to the shore in a suit. I think it's a story of us all to basically be nice and don't do anything wrong. He's a vampire and stay away from those fuckers. Treat people the way you want to be treated, and if they don't, stay away and fuck them up if you have to.

The "turn me on, turn me down" line always hits me; the way I interpret it is like this; turning on a car radio, then turning down the music. Keeping it on as background noise; as company, but not something you necessarily want to listen to. This relates to toxic relationships; keeping someone with you just so you're not alone, while not really appreciating or loving them anymore.

Interpretation (This explanation may be a bit incoherent, I never claimed to actually be smart hehe): This song is about an unhealthy relationship where one person (namely Phoebe) is giving too much to try to help the other person, so much that this "help" is actively harming her. This video is just an extension of that idea. The man in the video is a person who takes advantage of others and their kindness, seen through how he takes advantage of the man who tries to lend a hand and give him a ride and gets promptly deserted on the side of the road. He also is a manipulator and uses his wounds (be it physical or emotional) to lure people in, but we later see that he is faking even that. The dog, however, is drawn to this man and even after seeing this behavior over and over again continues to stay. It's important to note that the motif of dogs is used throughout Punisher, Phoebe comparing herself to "a dog with a bird" on multiple occasions, so it's safe to assume the dog could be a metaphor for Phoebe herself. The man keeps pushing the dog, Phoebe, away but she somehow always ends up right back by his side. Still, by the end of the video, we see Phoebe and the dog sitting in identical outfits (further solidfying the idea that they are one in the same) having stolen what the man has taken from them and others, finally away from him and all the pain he brings. That's just my take though, and it's still pretty muddy! Feel free to add, I'd love to hear other opinions :)

My interpretation is that the “savior complex” part is obvious, It’s about someone who is attracted to broken people. Thinking somehow they’ll be the one to fix them. What the video shows takes it one step further... that the person trying to do the saving is just the same, if not worse. More sly and coy about their motives and levels of manipulation. That’s why you see at the end that she was the bigger con artist all along. Trying to save others from their problems, but neglecting the biggest problem of all which is herself.

I've never had a music video hit me on this level. This is my perception :
The Chihuahua represents Phoebe and her Savior Complex, the need to save someone/ fix their problems.
The man introduced in the video is clearly damaged, manipulative and takes advantage of others without guilt. Narcissistic even, the lack of empathy, lack of conscience and cruel actions to what appears to be many victims (including Phoebe) by the amount of personal items and cash he took from people. Not to mention playing fake victim.
It shows that no matter where he goes, Phoebe is there with him. Though he knows she keeps showing up, he doesnt actually care that she is there and keeps doing his destructive behavior. To me, it feels like when real Phoebe shows up at the door with the water & dog bone, it's like she is trying to get him to acknowledge her. To me it represented the effort someone puts in for someone they are in an unhealthy narcissistic relationship with but it goes unnoticed and he closes the door on her like she meant nothing to him. The scene where he looks to the window to see the dog innocently looking back at him, he laughs at her. Almost mockingly. It looks like the dog is tearing up and actually looks quite sad and disappointed and again, he laughs at her.
When you see Phoebe walking away it represents her finally leaving him behind and letting him go. Accepting that it hurts more be there for someone who doesnt care. And that some people can't be saved.
When he dreams of laying with the dog, I think it represents a moment of clarity toxic people have sometimes when they realize for a moment when they arent being destructive that someone was there for them/loving them. But it was too late. He wakes up and the dog is gone.
And finally, when Phoebe and the Dog are together (as one) it feels like they are there for eachother ( or her being there for herself instead).
He wakes up, the dog & everything was gone. To me, it feels like someone who continues to be so toxic will eventually lose the people who care about them and will end up with nothing in the end.
One can only hope

The ending of this song is haunting. The fact that there is no resolution--either lyrically or musically (with a return to the tonic note)--is both maddening and brilliant at the same time. I want to hear that last line one more time, but leaving it out is so incredibly effective.

My interpretation: The man has a poor sense of morality, as he is a manipulator and takes advantage of others. Pheobe, who owns the dog and has a savior complex, decides to take on the duty of fixing him and making him a better person. Pheobe makes sure the dog follows the man everywhere, until the man feels like the savior. As soon as the man begins to feel love for the dog, it is ripped away from him. Pheobe saves the dog from him and his kindness was taken advantage of, which is exactly how he made others feel. With this pain, his sense of morality was restored and Pheobe saved him as well.

i love how the official video displays the meaning of the song so well. the dog following after the needy man describes the song so perfectly. savior complex is my favorite of punisher but it wasn’t until i actually listened to the lyrics that i realized how similar it is to my own life/situation. i honestly believe that’s why i was drawn to it. phoebe is a fucking lyrical genius.

*an interpretation after watching this like 500 times or so lmao and i'm sleep-deprived and definitely thought about this too much so if you read this, man, you're the bomb*
it's so dream like on purpose, black and white to make it seem like it's a memory, or another time separate from the one we're in (i think we always associate B&W with something outdated because of how tv and film starting out that way before colour film was introduced in the 60s). at the beginning, when you see phoebe in the tractor, i think that's referencing the lyric in chinese satellite where she says a 'tractor beam
coming to take me to where i'm from' and clock the one-handed driving from the lyrics of the song itself. the whole video you see her observing paul mescal with the chihuahua until you see her and the chihuahua at the end wearing matching capes as if they were always the same entity. perhaps phoebe is the one dreaming? in which she is watching herself as a chihuahua, a small dog chosen purposefully here to make us think that the she is quite helpless in the situation despite pitying this terrible man anyway because of her, well, saviour complex? chihuahua's also have these large beady eyes which make it so easy for us to project our own feelings onto, because that is how the dog appears, or is their ~nature~, which i think is another good reason it was a chihuahua chosen here. they want us to think that maybe the chihuahua is quite helpless to the man, but is in fact helpless to their feelings towards him instead. we look at those beady eyes and we think the dog is taking pity on him. i think at 3:20 you see a dream where the chihuahua and him are happy, but he wakes up to her leaving, and i think this is just a nod towards how these relationships tie people together through fantasy (he's a mess, and she's a fixer-upper, so we're happy--but it's dysfunctional). tie all of that with the finale, where you see the phoebe and the chihuahua seated at the beach, with the line 'all the bad dreams that you hide, show me yours...' and she doesn't finish with the usual chorus ending 'and i'll show you mine', where she instead looks at the chihuahua, because this IS her nightmare. being trapped with someone she wants to save because she feels like she can, because it's in her nature.

This song is so hard for me. I have savior complex syndrome. My best friend is going through a tough time and she doesn't want my help. Whenever I ask her, she says she doesn't want to share. But I keep on insisting because I wanna help her. I just can't see her sad. She gets frustrated whenever I insist her to tell me what's going on, I just wanna help.
if this is okay, i want to tell you that acting accordingly is wise. you should take care of yourself as well, which means directing your mind somewhere else when your friend does not want you in for the mess. they might want to do it on their own and not want any involvement for personal reasons.
