    It's crazy how this man would have two bass players,3/4 drummers, possibly up to 3 guitar players, keyboard players, percussion and horn sections and would utilize everybody!! 😂

    Fantastic . I have noticed how much he changed his show from 1972-3. More musicality - less screams .I wish this great telecast will come out commercially or on UA-cam, in its entirety . At age 23, I watched it in awe.

    John Jab'o Starks is to me the most memorable drummer he ever had Clyde Stubelfield really close second.

    • @jamesgraham3116
      @jamesgraham3116 3 роки тому

      That's a matter of preference. I myself preferred Jabo, but Clyde was Clyde. I think they both had a significant impact during their time with Brown. I have to give the edge to Clyde for his early beats. Funky Drummer was the most sampled beat of all.

    A little factoid: During this period, JB often wore these solid-colored jumpsuits with either "GFOS" or the word "SEX" in rhinestones on the front. This jumpsuit had "SEX" on it. ABC television wouldn't allow the word "SEX" by itself just being shown on a man's waistline, thus you'll notice JB has tape on his jumpsuit covering the word. My, how times have changed. Nowadays, the networks would probably DEMAND that you exploit sex in some type of way.

    • @javonteburris3954

      Wow i watched this a thousand times knew he had the sex jump suits, but didn't know tape was on here lol

    This was the time when Ali beat Foreman to regain the heavyweight title. This particular group was in Zaire with James. I saw them in Portland Or in the summer of 1974 at the Memorial Coliseum. In Concert, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, The Midnight Special were all television shows back then. James Brown and the JB'S were pretty busy in 1974.

    JB was doing things in the 60's and 70's that MJ couldn't do in the 80's.If you think i'm wrong this concert is an perfect example.

    I think that JB had a perfect stage performance at this time. In 1970 and 1971 with the afro his screams sounded different this year in 1974. Also he did a craaaaaaazy front split and i sill can' believe it Wooooooow.

    You can check out the photos from this concert on getty images. Fantastic concert photos especially the different outfits he wore. To me in my opinion this was like his last bang or whatever like how he reinvented himself with every different album. The whole look of the Payback is my personal favorite. He had the amazing SEX machine and GFOS jumpsuits and the hair was a different look from the Natural he'd been wearing since '69. James grew in the mustache that fit the look too. His dancing was the best during this period as well. The big band was amazing as always as well as his dancers (Lola Love was fine as can be!) I don't know the other female dancer here. If anybody knows her name? Never hear about her. I can see he really mastered his dancing by this point not that it was bad before, but dancers like him evolve to a point where their ish is damn PERFECT usually after years of dancing. After the Payback it kinda died down due to disco music coming in but it was still great.

    Saw a JB cover band a while back and made me appreciate just how funky JB is/was-took it for granted. Funk is a razor's edge, you get it wrong and it's just bland four to the floor rubbish. His payback here is unbelievably funky-dang!

    This looks like it was at a black college . During homecoming or something like that ! Can you imagine being on your college campus . Working with the black student union . For causes to liberate your people . And then to have SOUL BROTHA number #1 . To come to your college and perform at homecoming ❓️ I mean the energy from this is just ELECTRIC ⚡️☄️‼️

    I totally get what u mean. either he's forgetting the words or something was off when he started the song. to the average casual fan, u wouldn't notice that, but for diehards that know the song backwards will know something wasn't right with the way he sang it. the performances of "Payback" on other TV shows were lyrically tighter : Soul Train, Midnight Special etc.
