This watch is hovering on my shopping list. Tim, a question, is 904L steel really more "scratch resistant" as you say at 3:26? It's more corrosion resistant at the limit, and maybe polishable, but I've never even heard Rolex claim it's more scratch resistant. It's not a harder steel. Just trying to separate fact from fiction.
I've found that it's more scratch resistant in practice, but that might be a product of how Rolex heat-treats the steel and forges (rather than machines) the cases. 904L as used by Rolex does, in practice, resist scratches better, but as you note, it's not a harder alloy. There are other factors that contribute to Rolex steel's performance, but I tend to roll them into a single statement that describes the outcome: tougher finish. Best, Tim
Sir, the last two watches I owned before the last two Rolex watches I owned were made by Omega. My first Rolex I only owned for a few months, but my current Rolex I have owned and worn every day for more than two years now. In my experience the steel used by Rolex is definitely more scratch resistant than 316L. I have the dreaded 'polished center links' on my GMT Master II and yet I have fewer scratches on my clasp over a two year span than I did on my last Omega in a few months. I mean let's be real. You're going to get scratches no matter what. But I genuinely feel that not only does the Rolex steel hold up better over time, but it has a superior luster to it that does look different if you hold it next to watches made in regular steel. Some say that it is just marketing hype. Those people tend to be stupid, and probably have never lived long term with a modern Rolex. Or they are expecting a ridiculous and unrealistic difference between the two metals. I was a long term Rolex skeptic, but they won me over big time, and it was by the quality of their product, not some hype. I'll also vouch for the accuracy too. If mine gains at all it is no more than 0.2s+ a day. That 'green seal' that was introduced in 2015 made a big difference. I've tried on a couple of LV watches, one on the day I got my GMT and another in the last few months. In retrospect given the crazy demand for them these days I should have bought the last one just to flip it! In any case, it is a great watch. For me the need for GMT complication won out over the need to dive to 300m.
Nice video! I must say as a person who lives in an even more wintery climate than Philadelphia, I can't imagine putting my watch over a winter coat under any circumstances, but to each his own.
I did it in New Hampshire with a Bond Seamaster during my college years. That was my high school graduation watch, an SMP 2531 with the fold-out extension. The Rolex Glidelock is better than that, but the effect is the same if you spend a ton of time outdoors with your watch in cold weather. Best, Tim
Agree. That would be way too dorky. Plus, you'd risk scraping the watch against something or having it fall off and losing it entirely. And if it's really that cold, you could freeze your watch and mess up the lubricants. Bad idea.
We do, and we might even have two if my memory of this morning's visit to the safe serves me well. josht@thewatchbox.com can help you with any inquiries about our watches even if the inventory hasn't been listed yet. Best, Tim
Dr Tim is amazing , his pitches are unmatched, he could sell me a luxury pre-owned watch that was still in the stores new, for twice price , and Id be grateful, id be like honey isnt that salesman soo nice he really knows his product and soo proffessional as well, shed be like dear i think you paid too much, id be like , mind your own bussiness what about those 200 pairs of designer shoes you never wear? its okay he deserves the extra commission .
yes. for steel rolex it is worth it. and i don't lose money. No, i didn't get on a wait list. i happened to buy from a duty free airport in singapore... just luck.
Bought this watch last year and totally regret it. Dont really know what is so special about this watch.. that green dial makes me wanna puke whenever i look at it..
Such an amazing watch, what a shame that after years of waiting to be able to finally afford to buy one at an authorised official Rolex dealer, I can no longer find one, or be prepared to pay £2000 over list price in order to buy one. I can’t help but think they are missing a trick here. It only takes a brief Google to see that sales of Swiss luxury watches are way down on previous years. Surely it is in their interest to enable people like myself to be able to buy these at full retail? I refuse to pay so much over retail for a Rolex, regardless of how much I want one...... I’m having to purchase other brands to satisfy my hobby but at the end of the day, I’m left still wanting this and other Rolex’s (which I’d be happy to pay full retail for) because there aren’t any available (other than grey market). It’s complete madness. Whoever thought that if you had £6000 available to buy a watch that you would not be able to buy one...... Insanity..............
Rolex sales aren't way down compared to any previous years. This isn't Baume & Mercier or Zenith, it's Rolex, and they command their market, dealers, and price points. Best, Tim
WatchBox Reviews Thanks for the answer Tim. I did think it’s a weird thing for a brand to do to themselves. I’ll keep hunting and looking for my grail watches! One day I’ll find one 🤞
Marvel Comic tie in cheapens it ,"THE HULK" who was the genius that coined that one? Better if it were nicknamed the" Arnold Palmer " or the " Jimmy Connors" (Green) or even the" Rolex Wimbeldon" Rolex is the official time keeper could have launched it that way., given it to the winners . Tacked another 5k on list too.or even the the " Rolex Master's" or "Pinehurst edition" or all three' just write that garbage on the caseback respectivily., or however you spell it. whatever , yall have a good day.
Ok in this days!! All technology andd the time on the iPhone give u all world time why I bought watch retail price is 9500 and in market double,, or patek or Richard over price all time in phone give me reasonto buying watch.. all this marketing to take money from people

i mean how many emo / goth/ cosplay people are really gonna buy it , thats the supermanwatch / apple watch crowd anyways. Too busy wasting money vtg comics and dolls ,oh excuse me action figures
Do some homework guy... There already is a Wimbledon. And there is no Marvel tie in, just as there is no Pepsi tie in or Coke-a-Cola tie in. These are nicknames the community gives the watches. You clearly don’t know much about Rolex. I’ve got news...you don’t look smart or sophisticated...you just look like a poser.
I bought this watch in 2014 less than retail price, I didn't think it was a big deal...feel super lucky now!
You chose wisely ;-) Congratulations on a wonderful watch.
Best,
Tim
fantastic watch, got to be one of the most desireable Rolexes because of the colour. I imagine this watch will be gone by the end of the day.
Possibly, but at the beginning of the day, we did have two of them.
Best,
Tim
Great review as usual Tim. Do you know How many hulks subs are manufactured in ratio with the black subs?
Probably 3:1, 3 black subs per 1 hulk
Hype or no hype, this is a SUPERB watch and will ALWAYS be totally desirable
2:26 - what are you eating? Holy moly that's a nice watch and a good review :-)

NICE ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL SUBMARINER GREEN HULK WATCHES !!!!
904L is not more scratch resistant than 316 (even softer) but more resilient against corrosion.
What a MASTERPIECE.
Not a big Rolex guy (although I’ve given several of them as gifts). But I’d definitely consider the hulk.
Couldn’t find it on the website..must be sold already
It's Pat Yup... Everyone wants the Hulk. I’m on a waiting list at a local AD ..I don’t mind waiting it’s not like I “need” it
I'll get to use it.

We do, and we might even have two if my memory of this morning's visit to the safe serves me well. josht@thewatchbox.com can help you with any inquiries about our watches even if the inventory hasn't been listed yet.

Any news if Rolex will start shipping these soon in decent numbers to the ADs ? The supply virtually dried up from mid 2017. Love your content btw.
I bought mine in 2015 and got 10% off, I paid 5700 EUR
where can i get it for that price
How do I gain access to the list of used dealers who are waiting to purchase this unique time piece? I have one ,authentic, I’m interested in selling.
We know the best place to sell it to ;-)

904L steel - corrosion resistant? yes. More scratch resistant than 316L? Likely not as it's softer.

Introduced in 2010 and it’s still very much sought after. I bought this in 2016 paying retail
Retail is a very fair price to pay these days! It was worth your while to get on a waitlist and purchase the watch new.
Best,
Tim
