    Having grown up in the West I really don't identify with this idea of liberal hegemony. I always thought we were meant to respect other peoples, and the way their societies and countries operate. So, personally I've never had a problem with other countries being whatever they want to be. To me, it's Karen levels of control to think you know the RIGHT way to do things, and then using force or deceit to coence others into being the same. As an individualist, it seems wrong to believe countries can't also be individual in their laws and customs.

    • @Steve-pq7cb
      @Steve-pq7cb 54 хвилини тому +2

      Perhaps Americans are taught to respect fellow Americans (assume race is not an issue, which is itself a big assumption). But when it comes to other countries, USA loves to tell others what to do and use force if they don't listen. That's hegemony.

    If Liberal Democracy was the goal of America for countries around the world to have, then why has it consistently, and continuously, undermined countries that had democratically elected leaders with a different political philosophy to capitalism? I'm not falling for American foreign policy being all about spreading democracy. NO WAY!

    John you said that liberal democracy is the best form of government in for the worlld. I disagrre a civil meritocracy government like China is far superior to liberalism where a clown or comedian or an actor can become president. Goverment must be run by a meritocatic career civil workforce. China has already proven that this is the way for an orderly society. liberalism is just a license to have a disorderly society if the population decides to. Democracy is a slippery slope to anything goes, exhibit a the usa.

    Whatever the philosophy, foreign policy ultimately has to live in the world of regular people and government. There is such a thing as real world interest, such as trade and military bases.
    The problem with the United States is that the people in Washington DC do not seem to be able to adjust to reality. As soon as the war in Afghanistan was over, they started a new war in Ukraine. When it was clear that the trade war against China was lost, they continued. Maybe even more disturbing, they did not seem to care about what they were dealing with. I did not heard any report about them conducting in depth study of issues before they launched the fights. To sum it up, recklessness seems to rule Washington DC. And they are incapable of changing course.

    As described by the prof., liberal hegemony is well-intentioned: to bring democracy (albeit American-style), peace and prosperity to other nation states. I wonder if the prof. is aware of the connotation of the word "hegemony" in most people's mind. In my mind, at least, hegemony means imposing one's own wills upon others. If liberalism is what it is as described by the prof., it can not be well-intentioned because liberalism is predicated on safeguarding selfish interests. If "liberal hegemony" is as benign as the prof. wants us to believe, the advocates of "liberal hegemony" should set a good example for the world by bringing democracy, peace and prosperity to its domestic audience first. Unfortunately, the world knows what the reality is: blacks and first nations are treated badly; since the heydays of liberal hegemony, the middle-class has shrunk; and political division and extremism has reached a new level.

    Mearsheimer takes it as given that "Americans are Americans", "Russians are Russians", "Chinese are Chinese," etc.. This is a rather old school, dare I say "rac*st", way of looking at the prospects for humaniity. "Race", as simple reading of Wikipedia will inform you, is a social construct. As is "culture". Race is an assortment of individual traits (hair type, eye shape, etc.) that, in aggregate combined with culture, _appears_ to be evidence of "race". Culture is similar. The USS Enterprise of Star Trek will not have a Russian, a Japanese, a Scott, etc.. It's going to have _individuals_ with no discernible modern day "racial" background. Let's work on that. Invite Chinese to America and hope they stay and start a family with Americans. And similarly for Americans looking for something new in China, and in Europe, and in Africa, etc.. Travel and communication make this inevitable. The sooner we can help it along, the less bloodshed and misery we will have to endure getting there.

      @workingTchr Годину тому +1

      @@willarddu This is a _choice_ you are making as I am presuming either a 1st or 2nd generation person from China. For your children and even more so their children there will be no such choice to make. They won't _choose_ to embody this American aspect or that Chinese aspect. They will simply _be_ this or that Chinese or American aspect. Which aspects from which culture survive the "generational cut" remains to be seen. Nature usually makes the right decision. As someone whose ancestors were Irish and Portuguese, I can attest that I don't identify with either of them.
