Van Halen is one of few bands that can sound so much like the record live, yet still make it a unique performance, if that makes sense...both eras were amazing
Obviously some backtrack vocals here(that's what aerosmith did too), but they were tight and cool at the same time, fo sure, and this riff is my favorite from this era of them (update: backing vocals, not backtrack, sry)
@@banditdarval9401E.g. in the first refrain from around 1' min, the held note vocal is suspiciously too perfect for live performance. @@zebulondudora I've played guitar in local bands for 25 years as well as running sound. No backtrack. Sammy was just much better back then. Maybe it was cleaned up after the fact, MAYBE.

christopher perry I got to see them in 1993 at Merryweather Post in Maryland. I was 13 and it was the best concert I ever went to by a long shot! I went to decades of concerts there after and none was as intense as Van Halen. They opened with Poundcake! I didn’t know it then but it was a once in a lifetime experience I will never in my life forget! My dad let me stay home from school the next day because my ears were still ringing it was so loud! Amazing!!
When I was a little kid in the 80's, that was the one thing I paid attention to whenever I heard VH. I remember it being a very distinctive sound in a sea of 80's pop not knowing where it came from.
I don't care what anyone says he looks great in those yellow tights. Sammy will always be the man, He has the best voice in Rock today,Comparing him to Dave Roth is a joke Dave the entainer and Sammy all voice and he rocks love him forever
I love both incarnations of Van Halen, but I was a Sammy fan before he joined the band. His voice gives me chills. In a very good way that only a few rock vocalists can do for me (Paul Rogers is another one). This song is my hands-down favorite Van Halen tune. The lyrics, the groove, & of course Eddie's phenomenal guitar work blend with Sammy's voice to create magic for my ears. Love it!!
Roth vs Hagar is an irrelevant argument, two different bands, both awesome. I'll say this much though: if I'm going to put on a VH record, it's almost always Roth-era. But if I want to watch live video, it's pretty much exclusively Hagar. It blows my mind how this guy can run all over and sing like that, absolutely top-notch performer and vocalist. Hagar studio albums sound so damn watered-down compared to the live show. Performers are firing on all cylinders, and seriously, Mike's backup vocals are the icing on the cake.
The Roth songs are better but Hagar is a better singer. I've seen Roth twice, once with Van Halen and another time solo and he sounded HORRIBLE. He can't sing.
The same with me. House party drinking shooting the breeze always have the Roth era of VH on. Going to a concert to hear a real singing voice, Hagar's era of VH. Saw them 88' JFK at the Monsters of Rock. VH and the Scorpions kicked ass that day.
So refreshing to get a reply from someone that agrees with me. The majority of replies say that Hagar sucks and that DLR is better. I disagree. And you're right, The Red Rocker is still ROCKING!! I've loved Hagar since his Montrose days. And I love Chickenfoot!! And he is still a sexy man to me. He does'nt look his age, that's for sure. He's still got so much energy. I'm a die-hard Hagar fan and always will be. At least we know an awesome musician when we hear and see it, dont we? :)))
Wow, only 58,279 hits on this killer song!! Hard to believe. When Hagar and Anthony were in VH, that's when they were at their best!! Hagar brought energy and passion, and of course talent to a band that really needed it! Eddie and Alex screwed up when they let The Red Rocker go! Shame on the VH brothers for letting their egos and alot of other BS get in the way of continuing to put out more bad-ass songs!! LOVE VANHAGAR!!!
Eddie's solo here is better than the record. And Black n' blue is one of my fav solos. I notice at the end if Sammy takes the mic out of his tights, it won't work for a sec.
I can't disagree with you but if you would have seen them with Dave in 78 when they first hit the scene with their first album in that era completely live raw and Macho you just can't compare
Eddie was the only guitarist live where in ever solo the crowd would cheer, then when so silent hearing him you could hear a pin drop. Nobody will ever have that honor.
What a great song. On yesterday, 2/13/21, I again heard this gem after maybe 25 years. How I missed this song. Also, RIP, Eddie. You're missed. Richard
...and also the main reason I won't go to see Van Halen again. Michael was such an integral part of their dynamic, it was something I realized back when they started. Totally unique harmonies and monster bass playing. Who else has that?
Huge sound. I miss Mike's background vocals on the new stuff. The sound was awesome on this tour. Al's drums sound full and of course Ed's guitar sounds amazing as always...
Had a chance to see Chickenfoot, but had to work, UGH!! I wanted to go soooo bad, but I had a great paying job, so of course I wasn't going to lose my job. I do hope I will get to see Hagar before he hangs up the mike. I've been to a lot of big name concerts, but he is one that I REALLY want to see. Hopefully, I'll remember it, LOL!! I'm sure you catch my drift. Glad you got to see them in Tokyo, but I am jealous, LOL
I kick in this tune all the time! I watch and listen to it most especially for Mike. His bass and harmonies are te rocket booster this band always thrived on.
I saw Van Halen numerous times with both of them and Sammy wins hands down. The Van Halen records with DLR may have a harder rock edge to them but when it came to live shows DLR plain sucked, the worst being that disaster at the US Festival in 1983. The band was tighter sounding with Sammy and a far better show.
I wish they had more clear quality performances with DLR. The DLR era live videos typically were not mic’d per instrument like this and clear. I wish they hadn’t broken up before making a live album of the first 6 albums with Dave.
Dude you hit the nail on the head! Could not agree more! The Roth era records have more edge and I personally like Roth's lyrics better, but it's obvious that they are way better live with Hagar, but it's all still Van Halen and any of their lineups are still my favorite band ever!

Mike is such an incredible vocalist in his own right. A perfect complement to Hagar.
I hate to say it but this is my favorite VAN HALEN line up ED AL MIKE SAM. this film proves how Awesome they really are together.
christopher perry Damn RIGHT!! Van Halen at its absolute BEST!

Van Hagar
christopher perry This is by far the best version of this band!
Still to this day I get chills up my spine from this song it's so good weather live version or studio.
Believe you mean whether, not weather.
Hearing this song always puts me in a better mood
Sad day in rock music today one of the greatest guitarists and musicians passed away R.I.P Eddie here's to ya🍻🍺🍺 🤘😢
Listen to those background vocals. Too awesome.
One of my favorites from OU812. The whole thing is a great album.
Underrated album. One of the most experimental, yet a great mixture of old VH and Van Hagar. Love it.

Sammy is severely underrated.
Eddie Van Halen Always Loved, Never Forgotten, Forever Miissed.
i love this song, has alot of Blues in it.
This is one of my favs by Van Halen
I miss you Ed! You were always my go to guitarist and will be forever! ❤️❤️
this song is a masterpiece!!!
True dat, the riff and then the middle guitar solo.
the middle part of this song might be the best part of the whole OU812 album.. great stuff!
Man, they sounded great! Michael’s harmonies are on point and cool to see him rocking a Spector!
WOW Michael Anthonys voice is awesome. Just piercing
When I was a little kid in the 80's, that was the one thing I paid attention to whenever I heard VH. I remember it being a very distinctive sound in a sea of 80's pop not knowing where it came from.
Mike and sams voices compliment eachothers like no others. So happy to see them still together
R.I.P. Eddie. You changed everything...
Sammy is the best voice in rock.
I bet that tour was one hell of a party. I bet it was a lot of fun!

I don't care what anyone says he looks great in those yellow tights. Sammy will always be the man, He has the best voice in Rock today,Comparing him to Dave Roth is a joke Dave the entainer and Sammy all voice and he rocks love him forever
Yeah I like the yellow pants too, it shows his package. He was pretty hot, and still is for a nearly 68 year old.
lets agree to disagree
VAN HALEN ROCKS BE IT SAMMY OR DAVID!!!!! IT'S ALL GOOD!!.
Goddamnnit 1988, you kicked ass all year long. 🤘🏼
He always had an amazing voice.

Just as good as the original. Awesome. Hagar had some awesome songs with Van Halen.
I’d rather hear Sammy’s voice than watch the theatrics of DLR
I can't disagree with you but if you would have seen them with Dave in 78 when they first hit the scene with their first album in that era completely live raw and Macho you just can't compare
some people say Sammy tries to hard...... I disagree! I love him.
Dave’s the try hard😂
My Rock Star Fantasy
Robert Christgau and his kind are not music fans, end of story. Their opinions are of no significance.
He desperately tries hard to have charisma and fails. He doesn’t try when it comes to writing lyrics, and he fails at that, too.
Bands of bands!!!!!!!... Edward Van Halen master of masters¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
I loved this song when it came out. Was really surprised it didn’t get up the charts further
Great video, great solo
RIP Eddie thanks for all the great music & phenomenal guitar playing. You WILL be missed.
E-P-I-C.
