As a life long Van Halen fan who fell in love with the debut in 1978, I loved the Sammy years and I think Balance was a near masterpiece.
Very underrated ablum. It's tied for first place for my fave.
So right you are the live songs from this tour are played flawlessly with perfection and tightness.Balance is a excellent creation.
It might’ve been their most metal album, for a band that was lazily lumped in with the genre early on.
Balance is such an incredible album. I was so confused the first time I heard people saying it wasn't great.
Balance is an epic Van Halen album--easily one of their best efforts. It arrived at a point when the band was, musically speaking, at its absolute apex. Unfortunately, it marked the last time Van Halen was a real musical force. And it will always be associated with Sammy's unfortunate, untimely departure that resulted in what was, in a very real sense, the end of the band. What little music that came after Balance was sorely lacking in nearly every aspect.
In this video you can really see how much Michael Anthony is the sound of Van Halen. He IS the backing vocals of Van Halen. Talk about not being appreciated. Missing these guys!
What if Michel sing just one for himself?!!!
Pretty sure he sang lead on a couple of the old hits when they were on tour with Cherone.@@leandromarichal999 There's got to be some video of it on here somewhere. I have a friend who used to play in a band that opened for them during one leg of the world tour with Cherone. I remember him coming home from tour at the time and telling me how Mike's voice still sounded amazing. During Van Halen's set, he and the guitarist of his band would go hang out in this tent Mike had set up under the stage. He said Mike would come down and hang with them during Ed's solo and on this one particular night, they asked him how he still managed to hit those high notes after all the years, to which he responded by taking a huge pull off a bottle of Jack Daniels he had and then saying, "Clean living boys.... clean living".
Michael Anthony amazing backup vocals 😳guy's a monster 👏👏
yes but the backup vocals here are pre-recorded / fake.
@@lizhollatz7052 incorrect. 1992-1995 they used some pre-recorded backing vocals. Ed said too.
You can hear him singing 2 different melodies at once. Per recorded. But still Mike is an awesome singer
Always
Michael Anthony has the single most underrated voice in rock n roll. Love that man's voice!
too bad Eddie and Alex did not think highly of him and ended up firing him from the band. HUGE mistakes but when you are under the influence of drugs & booze, common sense goes out the window.
Eddie and Alex ruined the legacy of VH with large egos and poor choices
that and he's a very underrated bass player, he;s like tuned a full step down at least from eddie and just drones the root note and it just makes such a heavy sound.
He's amazing!
Anthony has one of the best harmony voices ever!I don't get why he's so underrated???
@@5818fa1 was talking as a vocalist..His harms are AMAZING!!Killer bassist as welllll.....
Best song they ever did, One of the most underrated rock songs of all time.
agreed my brother
The whole album was one of the best and the most underrated hardrock albums of the 90’s..
Hell yeah! I was sold as soon as I heard the first five seconds. I think we had basic internet at my dorm but no way. Bike. Record shop. Asap. I bought three singles. One for me, one for a nephew, one for the local bar.
Yeah I gotta agree. This one and Unchained are unparalleled.
Totally, my favourite VH song!!! It's simply amazing...
What a shame this came to an end. The chemistry involving the music was so great. And Sammy out front was perfect.
*_THIS IS FUCKING GAY_*
@@dr.gigitegeschantelledelpi7588 Hey its you again! I just responded to a post of yours in a video last night. Hope all is well Doc. Glad to see you are watching some VH.
its all in the past now...
It’s funny because this song is one of the reasons it ended. If grunge hadn’t exploded, they would still be together. Ed started wanting darker lyrics. Sammy wanted this song to say “Well, I want to tell you what love can do” and Ed wanted “And, I don’t want to hear what love can do”. Ed says he got sober and started paying more attention to lyrics, but I think he was influenced by grunge. Then, once again, creative differences lead to them breaking up (it was keyboards that led to Dave’s exit when you think about it). I honestly don’t mind Ed working with different singers. I just wish he would change the name of the band with each singer.
Dr. Gigi Teges Chantelle Delpierre be sure never go to your office. Then again in your field of work you have to be insane anyways already
R.I.P. Eddie...you were and are the pinnacle of guitar. Sammy's vocals here are incredible!
This band was so good, unstoppable in my opion!!But great things never last, sad!!
😢🥺
I challenge any vocalist to attempt to properly sing this song live. Sammy could belt it out like no other, in my opinion.
@@yourbeardispatchyaf David Lee Roth couldn't sing this song to save his life.
Amen so true.rip eddie :(
...and Michael Anthony's backing vocals really helped out both Dave and Sammy live...his contributions should never be underestimated....
Sammy was 48 years old here and to hit notes like this at his age is awesome .I love this song !!!
Great voice #Sammy👍
@Xenyan Selfyan *_THIS IS FUCKING GAY_*
Fucking amazing tour saw it at 12 years old 36 now best concert I've ever seen and I've been to plenty of concerts great memories!
Sammy's a monster no doubt...Hes a killer singer without a doubt, but damn, they were good together !Diamond who..Lmao,Sammy can smoke Roth on his his worst night,or day,FACT!!!
Sammy Is awesome puts DLR to shame
I know the band was bursting at the seams when this was recorded, but dammit, it's good!
I remember listening to Balance over and over again when it came out. It's one of VH's most underrated albums.
And the news just broke about Eddie's passing. I will miss him and his music so much. R.I.P Eddie!
My fave album BY FAR.
Sad sad day EVH will always be remembered and put on a pedestal high above the rest. Love the music ED!!!
In all honesty it’s the only VH album I’ve bought. I mean I always liked their stuff but this song got me man. Had to have it at the ready.
@@debschannel6838 Same here. I don't care about any other album of theirs.
Great album it is underrated one of there best with sammy
Probably one of my favorite underrated Van Halen songs ever.
Can’t believe this was 25 years ago. Long live Van Halen
and just like that it is now 27 years ago. GO SEE THE LIVE MUSIC, ALL OF THE BEST ONES ARE GETTING UP THERE IN AGE. NOTHING GUARENTEED. DON'T REGRET MISSING CONCERTS
As a former drummer. That´s how you nail it. So well done Alex.
Amen to that brother. 50-year-old drummer who did it professionally for over 20. Met Al a few times and he's very nice. I actually got to stand behind him during this tour for my birthday. He was wearing the neck brace and all. And his drum sound amazing as you think they would. I was right there man. That snare drum just crushes
We are NEVER "former" drummers... just drummers \m/ ;-)
Man this is dam dam good...
Michael Anthony is the soul of both bands...
I wasn't a VH fan until Sammy joined. I'm 50. Love and respect to all of them.
michael anthony's singing is so good that he sounds like 10 people at once.
Sammy says hes the best back up ever!!!!!@@
Yes,he's great at harmonies for sure, killer bassist as well
Sounds like some sort of harmonizer effect
Lol they're using tapes. It's the bv's from the record synced to a click track. They did it on a few tracks live like When it's love.
@@loveiseternity It seems like they were using them at least since the late 80's.
In my opinion, Eddie's tone in this era was perfect. That MM guitar and 5150 amp was smoking hot and perfectly on the edge of insanity for Eddie to control.
Agree dude. The guitar tone om this album may be my favorite of all timr
Nope...The Plexi Marshall with his Stratocaster creation was THE tone. Eddie was using too much chorus effect in his later years.
Sammy brought Van Halen to another level musically speaking
Yes sir
ACROSS THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM!! PERIOD.
Middle of the road stadion rock. Yuk.
A few songs like this one, David Lee Roth was the best with Van Halen. Eddie was a little baby.
wham bam...
I skipped school to buy this record the day it came out and it was incredible. A year or so later I saw them play live and they were stupid good. I don’t care what anyone thinks but Sammy was the best VH frontman . His live vocals and stage presence were unreal. Listen to him song any of the old David Lee Roth Van Halen tunes live and call me a liar. His range and stage performance blow it away
Mark Thomas I totally agree Sammy Hagar is ALOT BETTER than David Lee Roth
I’ve always said Sammy could sing all the Dave songs but there’s no way Dave could sing the Sammy songs. Dave isn’t good live, never has been. Just listen to both live albums VH released. Right Here Right Now is amazing with Sammy and I can barely comprehend Dave on Live in Tokyo. Regardless I love Van Halen in both incarnations
@@justinwillis1856 you weren't at the Forum in June of 1981 for the Fair Warning Tour. No one could touch the power and stage presence of the Mighty Van Halen between the years 1978 to 1984. Van Halen ruled the rock world at that time! Van Hagar had some great songs during their time with Sammy. But they were not the cultural musicical phenomenon that they were up to 1984! I am forever grateful that I got to experience Van Halen at their creative peak in 81 and 83!
@@mbankslje0nk That's true. Even though Sammy is a more talented singer and a great person, the sound of David Lee Roth's voice in his prime, the songs, and Edward's guitar riffs put together in 1978 to 1984 are unmatched. Once that that went into the psyche, it became impossible to have another singer come in. Then again, given the circumstances, Sammy was the best choice to replace what could not be replaced.
Dave loses any battle of vocal abilities. He had his own genius about him. The biggest flaw of VH was Eddie, Dave and Alex, mainly, not appreciating what all their band mates brought to the band.
Still not over losing Eddie rip thanks!!!!
This is just another example of the genius of EVH. The GOAT.
You have peace now all the demons from cancer are done, May you Rest in PEACE Eddie Van Hallen. Great father, husband, showman innovator, the bach of my lifetime.
100% with you there 🤟✨👍
Im a little out of the van halen demographic, but when I was a kid, Balance was one of the only CDs that I would play on repeat. I was practically raised on Van Halen with Sammy.
Blake Morris my dad played this album on repeat a lot when I was a kid too. I was raised on this and a lot of people don’t understand why I like Sammy with the band.
One of the greatest ever rock vocals -- Sammy Hagar proves (in this concert alone, let alone his myriad of great performances) he's one of rock's greatest.
They should got a grammy for this song.
You have to appreciate what must be in a person's heart when they put those type of feelings into a song! Very inspiring Sammy thanks buddy!
Can't believe I was only 29 when I saw this tour, 54 now. How the years start flying by. One of the best shows I ever seen and the best tour I seen VH on.
This was just by far the best VH line up.
Sure the fuck was!!!
Sammy was the best vocalist Van Halen ever had. period.
Comma however DLR was great too
David Lee Roth was better
Thats taste and opinion..... none of this cheesy 'period' bullshit. Dave deserves much more respect than that. Dave has gone down in rock history as one of the greatest front men in any band..... he was the ideal vocalist for Eddie Van Halen guitar player... a duo like no other, and unlike you.. I wont go cheesy with this, period! crap... Peace.
😂
@@bobabooey4537Absolutely!
The material with David Lee Roth was iconic and innovative.
Masters of rock!!! Sammy's incredible vocals, Eddie's crazy riffs, the bass and the backing vocals by Mikey, and the heavy drumming by Alex ... what a combination!!
I remember hearing this opening riff and thought holy shit I need to figure out how he's doing that... And of course EVH with his big bag of tricks again doing something subtle that no body else was doing.
Rip to the king!!
Yes!!!! So do I!!!🤩
The man could use every inch of those strings... amazing. I dont think I've ever seen anyone pull a song out of a guitar at the saddle.
You can't beat a voice like that, it's made for rock💪🤘
I never knew how Eddie played and picked the opening notes and riff tapping the pick on the back bridge pickup coils. So creative and innovative
I always guessed it was palm muted but then watching this blew my mind.
Michael Anthony took care of the back up chorus and vocals all by his self WOW!
They used pre-recorded backing vocals to sing along with on the FUCK, RHRN, Balance, III and 07-08 tours.
@@thefonzkiss They used tracking Vocals at the US Festival too.
This is by far the best Van Halen lineup!
michaels harmonies just flow extra smooth
There will never be a group of talented guys that can ever come close to being anything that VANHALEN was and is forever in our memories be.
Pinnacle of rock music. This is the best it got and it never got better.
You can keep all of the Dave dancing and acting a fool. Sammy is a singer and front man for me. Truly knocks your socks off.
Fine. Just don’t call it Van Halen. Fair enough if false advertising isn’t involved
@Whaddayamean13 ha, well, the main song writer's last name is indeed Van Halen.
Eddie's tone sounds absolutely enormous on the outro, he always sounded great whatever he used. The GOAT.
Best vocal ever!!! Sammy is the best!!!!
They really kick ass here and Eddie please bring sammy and mike back !!!
Donald Busby there's no way they are going back. They both played at the same band with the best guitarist in the world JOE SATRIANI
One of the few that actually took care of his money maker
Sammy is my favorite van halen singer
And you are?
@@fgk9397 And you are?
Sammy is my favorite Van HAGAR singer. Dave is my favorite Van HALEN singer.
Concordo plenamente contigo só não se esqueça de Edie Van Halen ok abraços
The best time to be alive !
All of Van Halen!
Dave , Sammy, Michael Anthony, Alex, and the one and only Eddie Van Halen!
These shoes will never be filled , ever!
This Is Rock..!! Best version of V/H
I saw Van Halen 5 times between 1988 and this Tour. Every show was just Amazing.
Eddie’s heart and sole passed through his instruments. His intense abilities come straight from his core! Bravo!!!
HEART AND SOUL :THAT WAS EDDIE
VAN HALEN' S ALL ABOUT
Howgood do they sound! underrated song. Sammy at his best
This song has always been legendary. It deserves more recognition. The solo by EVH 🎸 is unstoppable. Longs live Mr. Van Halen !!!
Eddie is truly a gift from God himself.
I'm not a fan of Van Hagar but, this song is top song on so many levels. I guess when I grew up ,a generation got used to a (79-84), crossing over the line super destroyer band, and it was hard transitioning from that band to this. Looking back now , I can see they were both great and both had pros and cons. Over all ,they were magnificent.
Michael Anthony absolutely kills it
I love the guitar riffs in this song!
I love how into it Eddie is at 0:59. Sammy's voice kills it here too.
Eddie sounds otherworldly on Balance.
Are you kidding me??People talk bout VH with David,Not even Close...Sammy smokes that dude then and now, true story!!!Sammy rocks!!!Eddie even thot this was VH's best record!
DLR is an entertainer, Sammy is a singer
I totally agree with you, 100%. I have always been a Sammy...or Van Hagar guy. Sure, the Roth stuff is great and definitely an audio-party if there ever has been one. But the albums with Sammy were masterpieces. I know that a reunion of this lineup was never going to happen...but now we know that it truly will never happen...as it can't. We lost a good one yesterday. Eddie was THE dude who is responsible for how us guitar players look at the guitar today. Hendrix showed what was possible...but it was Eddie that applied it. Eddie set the template for lead playing in rock guitar.
@@robpaxson4455 I couldn't agree better
Great singer. Shit lyrics.
@@sunnibird Are you Finnish?
Last tme I got the 'chills' from a Van Halen track....can't believe it's so long ago!
same....time flies man. 👍
David Lee who, Sammy's the one that made VH what they are today and forever. To Edward Van Halen, you rocked from the day you were born. Thank you for your gift of music 🎶
Listen on Fire, atomic punk, light up the Sky
Rest in peace Eddie. You'll be missed. Thank you for the music.
🙏😢
Dayum....Mike's backing vox on this are lethal. Better than the studio version.
yes phenomenal
ortizmo yeah, I wonder how Mike got his voice to sing in harmony with itself. So talented.
It's great how he can make himself sound like 3 people, yeh?
Van Halen had a history of fixing live performances in the studio. As good as Mike is, those harmonies are doctored somehow. Especially since Eddie doesn't appear to be singing.
He is using a harmonizer, its a vocal effect that layers your voice a lot of live bands use it. Why wouldnt you wanna hear his kick ass voice twice?! Haha!
Amazing how much Eddie elevated Sammy's art.
Amen to that! Vanhalen just isn't the same without these two amazing voices, and the harmony is right on point!
i love EDDIE VAN HALEN!! I am still in shock he has passed away, Music will never be the same!! Losing EDDIE< CHRIS CORNELL, CHESTER, LAYNE, SCOTT WEILAND,RONNIE JAMES DIO AND MANY OTHERS SEEMS LIKE HARD ROCK IS TAKING A BEATING!! RIP TO ALL THESE LEGENDS :(
I love him so very much too💘
RIP, Eddie .. miss you so much!!🎶🎸😔💔
Very underrated song!
F cool song
@@diamondgelo3843 He's a Debbie Gibson fansboy. No wonder.
I Love This Song WOW...Sammy Hagar Your'e Amazing The Best ♥
WOW! They sounded just absolutely incredible here this night in history.
Fave .very underated song .rip EVH xx
totally kicks ass great song!
the best van halen era!!!!!
HANDS DOWN
Sammy sounds fantastic in this concert footage. Either he really sounded like this or it was enhanced for taping. I've heard other live concerts from him and it was nearly just as good. Sammy sounded good in his 30's, 40's and 50's. He does even now which is his 60's but you can heard the years in his voice now though. Still won't take anything away from him bc he is a true professional.
I couldn't agree more. Still enjoying this music
I'm outta breath watching him sing this. He holds that high range for so long, lol I find myself holding my breath!😱😆
Sammy with just absolute power house vocals!
Wow, ive been doggin' Van Hagar lately but this was a badass performance to this song!!!!!!
Sammy did write it, soooo
This performance eclipses the LP version for me. Their other live performances no
I'm a fan from the 70's and to me , Don't Tell Me is VH's heaviest song. It just oozes and oozes weight! 🤘 R.I.P. Edward.
Eddie Van Halen the greatest guitar hero ever
Great performance but how good are Mike's vocals. They sound like a synth, pitch perfect - incredible to pull that off live.
Their overall sound as a band would never have as recognized without him. Case closed !!!!!
Another evidence why Sammy is the best vocalist for VH.
I'm a Sammy fan and a Dave fan too. Dave era music was great! Dave was a great charismatic act and frontman. Sammy was also a good frontman but a better vocal talent. Also, two guitars was an awesome twist at a time that VH needed a new direction. (Just a Gigalo? California Girls? C'mon, Dave, give me a break.) Interestingly, THIS song sounded like a response to "grunge' when it came out, but now when I listen to it it sounds like it could easily have gone on Fair Warning. Balance is underrated.
Part of the reason you wanted to see VH live was to see Roth too, as well as the rest of the band. What Roth brought to VH and rock in general is beyond compare (in my humble opinion).
Ant
Maybe, but not vocally
absolutly
Michael Anthony was the best vocalist in the band.
Best VH album of Hagar era IMO. Up against grunge, rap and country music's of that time still multi platinum!!!
This performance is so freaking good. Sammy and Eddie are zoned in here.
2:27-3:03.....Eddie playing with so much feeling...same expression on his face when Jimi would play back in the 70's....Alex grooving along is EPIC Van Halen...
they were so tight during this time...what killer memories....
REST IN PIECE EDDIE VAN HALEN
RIP EVH!!!!. True genius. The world changed musically because of you..
Michael effing Anthony from 3:39 to like 4:13...Van Halen will NEVER be the same....
perhaps the best 34 seconds you'll hear👍
Pipes on Sammy, hell yeah. Crazy pitch to sustain throughout and total f'n all around badass jam. One of the best!
Great song! Great band! Great frontman!
I saw Van Halen twice in the 90s in Detroit. Once was the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour and the other was the Balance tour. I'm very thankful I saw both of those.
1995, the year I got sober! I remember I was in rehab when this album came out. My friend brought it to me one weekend. Must of been a cassette, cuz i listened to it on headphones. That album got me through a very difficult time
Whole band was amazing. Alex especially here, the way he uses syncopation and space.
Mike Anthony is Very impressive, he can play bass and sing with magnificent voice.
Jimmy Bugle, that’s a backing track of multiple voices. You couldn’t tell that there are harmonies?
one of the best Sammy Halen Songs ever
Sammy rulessssss
Got to see this incarnation twice and I am super thankful!!
My favorite VH's song, so powerful and so underrated
Ahhhh, the continual fight for balance. Definitely my favorite Van Haggar disc... I am blessed enough to enjoy both lead singers for different reasons. Sammy brought the passion like few others. R. I. P. EVH. 😢
i saw every tour sammy did with vanhalen, they were flawless!
I love Van Halen! Icon! Sammy Hager, wonderful combination! Which they would do some concerts again!
what a monster of a human being. RIP legend
pra mim essa sempre sera a melhor musica deles! obrigado van halen por fazer parte da historia do bom e velho rock n roll
R.I.P. Eddie .... you playing guitar and Sammy vocals freaking awesome
