That intro is just so hauntingly beautiful.
Eddie at his most melodic, like Eric Clapton Badge live melodic!
Especially now!
Man, is it ever.
Fair Warning was a dark album --- but deliciously dark
the lights of ''VH'' while eddie plays the intro its just legendery
One of their best weapons was Michael Anthony's backing vocals...
@Greased Lightning Mike was right where he was supposed to be, otherwise Ed would get lost. That being said, Daves band tore this band a new one musically.
@Greased Lightning Just saying that Daves band with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan set a new standard.
@Greased Lightning Mike is an awesome bassist! What's up with that?
@Greased Lightning And you're a bass player? Look, I always say if you can't do it yourself whether it's music or sports, you shouldn't criticize. Learn the craft and be YOUR best. Mike has a number of deals with companies who put out MA edition instruments. He must be that good.
He could wail ... you might not realize it , but a lot of times those surly high notes Roth hit were shadowed by Michael Anthony , bad ass band , Roth gave them flair & magic , Haggar was good , but the Original is always the Best !!
You will never see anything like this ever again,,, Epic,,!!
I said the exact same thing
best band in the world at this point
fuck the word
i love you ojeint to all
One of the most overlooked and underrated VH songs. Great riff and vocals, wicked groove, and killer solo.
^^^@HinjuRock .. Ah Only Heard this Tune the Other Day, I Just Don't Know Y I've Never Heard it B4, and I've Been Playin' it Ever Since .. U R Right Man :D] .v ..
Great Tune !
Definitely a top-10 all-time..best song on Fair Warning imo adding similar to "In A Simple Rhyme"
Everything is "underrated."
Not to me..this and simple rhyme are my favorites.
One of the best stage moves of all time, when they all hop forward towards the front of the stage...
That is awesome. On the Mean Street video (Italian TV) mike and Ed go opposite of DLR intentionally then they go syncopated. That’s the best stage stuff I’ve ever seen
Copied by many a hair band that would follow. Often imitated, but never duplicated! Van Halen was unstoppable in this era. 🤘🏻
Not a big fan really of that shit, but that was pretty Cool......... Cause it was them. 😜

Try watching PRIEST in their prime..
Yes,
IT WAS GREAT
Van Halen in their prime, hitting on all cylinders. The song sounds as great as it did on vinyl, possibly even better...Ed's guitar, DLR's voice...all crystal clear. M Anthony's bass thumpin' and harmonies clear as ever....and Alex's drums snappin' like a firecracker.
110% agreed! My Personal Favorite VH Tuna Of All Time. It Has EVERYTHING about The Band That Was Great & Then Some. How This Didn't Go # 1 Is Beyond Me 🤔👍
0:34 to 0:40 It's priceless, superb, amazing. We'll only see this in another incarnation, on the other side.
Yepp happy Sunday but last 10 years rewind Eddie messed Michael & on & forgiveness of Eddie a drug client wtf American dream is blindness
Yawn
Exactly
Van Halen at their absolute best!
this is the best van halen EVER!!!!!!!!!1981 things were so much better than now!!if you werent there then you dont know!!!!!!!!!
This is what it means to be a rock star.
Despite their personal issues...THEY MADE ABSOLUTE MAJIC! Legendary songs!
I'm so very grateful that my generation had grown up, enjoying the shows and jams to our beloved Van Halen. We were so lucky and it was the greatest of times.
AMEN or LIKEWISE!
If I had a time machine it would be set to go back to this show
there's definitely a lightning in a bottle phenomenon happening here. wow
yeah, forget about killing Hitler. I wanna see this live
Me too our luck we would end up at a wham concert by miscalculated dials on our machine 😖
I would try to find the lovely at 0:52 if I was able to travel back to this show.
^^@ .. Ha ha, I Like Yo Style Dude :D] .v ..
Quite possibly the most perfect moment in rock history
THAN MY FIRST CONCERT WAS A GOOD ONE LOL
My first was the Diver Down tour when I was a Freshman- I wish I could have seen this tour because by Diver Down they had dropped a lot of the Fair Warning songs--Fair Warning is my absolute favorite VH album!
Demonic Sweaters I completely agree.
My very first concert.I was Fn' blown away.Reunion Arena in Texas.Alot of kick ass rockers there.
It’s so good I can’t stop watching it!
It’s 2021 now, and to say that this performance was nearly 40 years ago (1981) is crazy and shocking. This song will never get old and will always feel legendary. Long live the mighty Van Halen. And to Eddie Van Halen Himself. Rock on in heaven GOAT. R.I.P. 🐐🔥🎸1955-2020
🙏
Its fantastic that we lived when they lived.
Saw VH in '78 as an unamed opening act. Wow!!!!! My friends left soon after Black Sabbath playing. All time pleasure.
@@steveogee7458 my Brothers band "Autograph" toured with Van Halen in 1984, which helped thier
first album go Gold before the tour was over. and hit song "Turn Up the Radio" later made Platinum
How lucky we were to grow up during this time!!! I remember when Van Halen first came out, I was in high school and Eddie's playing was pure magic!
I was in 7the grade when 1st album came out, but saw them on this tour in Fresno.

Eddie at his peak; Fair Warning= Eddie's greatest work and the finest record by VH hands down.
R S well said!
Yeah, the guitar playing on Fair Warning is just astounding, even by his standard. Love the dark vibe of the whole album too. Kinda futuristic and grimy at the same time, almost kind of Blade Runner
I love Fair Warning. That dark gloomy feel was different from their other albums.
Dirty Movies is my all time favorite VH song
It was dark, intense, whole, experimental, aggressive!
The "Dave era" made them the best band EVER. Just 4 guys putting out full kick ass sound.
Good time R & R.
SO TRUE !!!!!!!!!!
BEST BAND EVER???? GIVE ME A BREAK......
@@adamfox9245 Which band do you prefer? Beatles or Zeppelin? Hahaha overrated guy
I love both!I don't believe there is a BEST and I have a slew of favorites from the Beatles to Judas Priest, BOC etc.....

The best of the very best.....David Lee and the boys!!!!!!
That moment when you’re the best rock n roll band in the world
I was an intern for MTV, in the studio (Unitel Studios, where the VJs and Director of On-Air Talent worked out of), in 1987. No pay but the best perk was dubbing all the videos you wanted from MTV's vast archive. I remember recording this video (among many), still with time stamp, on a VHS tape and taking it back to college. Then I watched it with some friends and couldn't believe what I was seeing: the perfect Van Halen moment -- one that I hadn't seen live on MTV. They are fighting trim, ferocious and hungry, in perfect synchronicity. The power and the glory. So glad this is available on UA-cam whenever I need a dose of adrenaline and dopamine.
What a totally awesome review, Mark! Thanks!
This is the show I would go back in time to see
No one will ever touch that original four. Ever. My heart is 50% happy and 50% broken when I watch this. Oh, man, do I ever wish every American kid had the chance to fall in love with a band this insanely talented and entertaining. Great artists will come and go, but the original VH was a once-in-a-lifetime collection of talent.
So well said. I absolutely agree ..this was the genesis and iconic Van Halen...when this band fractured, it was the end. Yes ..VH going further more mainstream success with Sammy, but to the fans of those first 4 records? The new VH was a completely different type of band. DLR and Edward were the Lennon and McCartney of this genre of rock. Dave's personality literally spills off the records. His gritty dirty delivery, those brilliant ad libs.."one break ..coming uuuuuup'...genius. And EVH ..he just seemed more inspired working with Dave. I'm glad that DLR and Al and Ed ultimately did drift sweetly back together...and a friendship survived. To bad Micheal Anthony was somewhat...ok alot ostracized..but I totally understand EVH wanting to have his son on stage. I'm glad he didn't wait till he was older, because it may not have happened at all.
Peace 🕊️🕊️

the best live performance ever captured of Van Halen was this concert.
batz capo Yes. When these Oakland vids came on MTV in the 80's, hardcore Van Halen fans would live for this to see.
I saw this concert/tour in Toronto. I'd been playing guitar for about 3 years and Eddie melted my brain. Incredible band.
Aussie total VH obsessives like me,haven't been able to see these UNTIL NOW on UA-cam,Australian TV/Radio programmers have NEVER had even the slightest clue,as to whats cool generation after generation-I'm 52 now it defies description how Radio is SO BAD-They ONLY play a bands "Hit Single" NOTHING else, and Triple j [ Edit 12-2020-Triple JJJ actually saved us all down here when I think about it properly] supposedly the hip station "Rock" is almost BANNED,the ONLY time they even slightly hinted at playing something Rock was the first few times they played A.I.C. "would?" Not any of Dirt's album tracks, just would? Van Halen absolutely without fail JUMP. NOTHING ELSE It makes me so frustrated and still I'm shocked,at this"No Album Tracks"ever! Still!
Robert Sattler Wow What a treat for you! This is Van Halen to the bone. Kick Ass Van Halen!
David Lee was my boyfriend for years until he could not comitt I been married 15 yrs my first son named David and I still love him forever
THE MIGHTY VH AT THEIR PEAK!
No other band could touch them, in my opinion.
***** In the 80s......def right.....but Zep is the all time.
Tom Miller You should listen to How The West Was Won or Royal Albert Hall. Plant at his peak could sing like no one I have ever heard. VH is awesome...but they were always more Eddie than the others.
Maiden.
+SvenTviking Maiden can't touch VH
never
I cannot name another band that had more energy onstage than these boys. And I've seen many, many *truly great* bands over the past 50 years. Viva Van Halen.
So true. I'm so happy to have gotten to see them. Incredible.
Best rock performance of All TIME. BAR NONE
Old Van Halen is something to behold. Nothing will ever come close.
R.I.P. EVH - you were Massive. The Ultimate Rock Star.
I love the way Alex does that little hop on his seat at the very end.

Lmao and true

THE BEST BAND EVERRRRR!!!!!!! YEAAAAAAA!!!! Nothing today even comes close.
I agree...GREATEST ROCK N ROLL BAND EVER!!!!!
You got that right
@Christopher Norris that's a hollow reply.
Do you think that anyone in attendance that night had any idea that so many people 39 years later would be wishing they were there that night in Oakland. lol. One of the greatest rock bands of all time at the their height.
I was there! We( my friends and i) saw Valerie Bertinelli walking down towards the sound check area on the arena floor before the band came on... accompanied by two security guards. It by far the best of the many VH concerts i've been to. The arena workers/vendors were standing in the aisles watching the show. Everything about the show was absolutely perfect. I'm so lucky to have been there. I was a senior in high school at the time. They opened the show with Romeos Delight...great song to open up with. Actually, they always opened with Romeos Delight for a couple years.

Greatest rock band of all time. Rest Eddy.
David Lee Roth is a perfect example of it doesn't take a perfect voice to be successful.. unless we're talking about his incredible screams that sound like a cat just had it's tail ran over by a rocking chair lol Groove and soul and charisma is all Dave needed to prove his point.. not to mention what a colorful personality he was, one of the greatest frontman of all time, Diamond Dave!
What do you mean not perfect voice?
His voice is perfect for this! 👍😉
@@oneshothunter9877 I agree….. Dave sounds awesome!
Nah his best screams are his hawk screeches like the ones on atomic punk and on fire are badass!
DLR was perfect for the era 1978-1984 .........

Alex's best kit. Love that snare. You can hear It echo thru the stadium.
BadRonald1 that snare was brutal and perfect.
In 2012 I was in a VH tribute act as M. Anthony where the drummer had the "Fair Warning" drums with the black and white stripes with every rack tom and four bass drums present. When he played "Hot for Teacher" on it well...let's just say it was really loud. We did a killer version of this song too. Any VH tribute act that skips "Hear 'Bout it Later" is a fraud pure and simple.
That’s the “Brown Sound.”
In 82 I painted my drums the same way...

Cool!!!! 👍
So ridiculously good.
Growingup In This era was great! So many good bands to go see in concert!
R.I.P Eddie. You rock!!!!
They remind me of what was fun in the 80's. Going to a party with VH playing in the background. This is a moment in time that will never be replaced, I don't think there's been a rock band nearly as good. Fair Warning was my first VH record and I must've played it 1000 times. Way under rated by the critics, I think the whole band sounded amazing! I'm getting the remastered on cd.
paych GeRonimo my fave too and I even learned how to play unchained, wish I still had the 8 track
+Tom Miller Tom, I think we share the same attitude. Saw the MIGHTY Van Halen several times. 2015 tour most recent.
Few albums do that to me but fair warning can!
Oh, those parties...Arden Ave, I think? God Bless VH & Pasadena. California!
Alex's drums sound great, love that beat, unique!
My favorite VH song. Godspeed Edward, I love you 💔💔💔💙
NO Band in the late Seventies / Eighties was even - barely - comparable to VAN HALEN ! FOUR ROCK GODS at the peak of their talent !
It was a lifestyle.
Well, selling more albums or records doesn't mean shit even if you are right. look at people like drake or cardi b. sells tons of records and they are complete dogshit.
AC/DC is a great rock n roll band, but its simple and easy to get into and they had the same formula for their whole career that worked but wasn't interesting.
Van Halen was the better band, they were innovators and showed you how it's done and blew everyone away. Van Halen changed the formula and the music scene, AC/DC was just another band that sold records. That is also facts.
I think Powerage is AC/DC's best album but it's not commercialized like back in black.
Van Halen wasn't a commercialized band until they released 1984. Then when sammy joined the band they hit number 1 on billboard everytime even when sammy's songs are not as good as when Roth were in VH.
@@lucasberglund2620 yup, exactly what you said.
Was thinking about how I might counter that statement. So I thought, "Hmmm...at that same period of time what were Y&T, Triumph, Rush, Judas Priest, and Night Ranger doing?" But...nope...you're right.

Great song, awesome album. A guitar player's fav.
I love this, Dave sings it straight for once (more or less) and the scream at 4:06 is killer, backing vocals right on...
As Ed once said..'Alex is the rock and I'm the roll' ......so darn true. They lock in a groove & never stop.
AT the time there was none better than these men! Thanks for all the memories when America is awesome, we are all awesome together.
That big Lighted "VH" was at the END of ths show, it was the light rig over the stage durring the concert, and was dropped, or fell down, and then lit up. it was bright and it was HOT. Great Memories of the greatest damn band on earth. The Mighty Van Halen.
Danniel Amyx i saw them in Montreal during this tour. The front of the light rig pivoted down all lit up, and you could feel a lot of heat once it hit you. Freakin good times!
@@TheProducers That had to have been great times. One of my biggest questions is how could Eddie have tolerated Dave as long as he did, the band always sounded so killer, Dave such a"whatever" .
This era of Halen I was only around 11 maybe, so I didn't get see them till a bit later. Always wondered what it would be like when
Van Halen " for lack of a better way to put it" pretty much owned rock. If I'd only come along a few years earlier. Thank God for Michael Anthony, without him it might have been a great guitar show and, maybe a karate clown dancing act on the side, maybe, I don't know what to make of Dave.✌️

I saw VH on this tour in Houston. They put on a fantastic show and were pretty much at their peak. Fair Warning is my favorite VH album and Eddie's guitar work on this song is his best. In the later reunions of VH, Michael Anthony is sorely missed, because he was the reason for VH's unique quality on backing vocals.
I agree and this might be an unpopular opinion but I think everything Van Halen after their 1984 album and Roth’s departure is mediocre in comparison, sammy hagar couldn’t do it and neither could an old tired david lee roth.
Dave actually sings his ass off here, one of the best VH songs ever, definitely my favorite album. RIP Ed..
Always the most amazing ultimate live band, I saw every tour,
Eddies clean tone is so spiritual
Although he is undeniably one of the greatest guitar players of all time, Eddie held his own with his back up vocals.
Eddie and Michael probably have some of the best backup vocals especially Michael in tracks like On Fire and Dirty Movies
Great song from I think their best album with Roth,,, RIP Eddie 🎸
You just had to see them live in the early 80s...Ill never forget it!
That guitar tone is UNREAL!!Otherworldly

The double bass outro by Alex is insane. The drum is so rock n roll . There will never be another band like them ever. I'm so glad I got to see them play. This never gets old.
The dance hop at :34 seconds is the stuff of legends. That is how you start a show.

Wow. What an awesome performance
OMG what a performance. Eddie was so crisp playing this difficult song while jumping around on stage. Impossible for anyone but him. I still have a hard time accepting he is no longer with us.
I saw them on every U.S. tour they did with Roth from July ‘79 to July ‘84, and I can objectively say that this tour (and album) was where they peaked, both as a live act and as songwriters. Fair Warning, both the album and the tour, is a big standout in my memory. This Oakland footage definitely captures them at a time when they were on top of their game.
Man I remember being 8 years old tryna play this song perfectly on my guitar. While other kids my age were playing outside, I was inside playing this intro over and over again... I can’t listen to this anymore without tearing up! RIP to my idol 😔🙏

This was the peak of this band, few bands ever had energy like this and Eddie moving around and picking without a flaw just shows how happy they were and wanted to entertain. I've seen them maybe 10 times and the fair warning, women & children, diver tours were just like this. I was leaning on the stage at all of those tour, EVH gave me one on his schlitz malt liquor beers while Michael was doing his bass solo then intro to running with the devil. And later met the band at the Hyatt pool on the 3rd floor Dallas, Valerie Bertinelli was there before Eddie and her were married. Those were the days, I wish this version of the band would have continued forever. We got robbed of some incredible albums that never happened. This was the mighty fucking Van Halen.
Kickass story and kickass times! Thanks for sharing. 🤘🏻

They killed it on their live album in the Tokyo Dome, back in 2015 and Hear about it Later was on their set list. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This is the Grand Finale of all Rock'n' 'Roll songs. What Chuck Berry started with the story of the aspiring guitar player "Jonny B.Goode" came to a crescendo end with Eddy Van Halen & his phonomal gang, that besides the guitar god Ed comprised of the high-energy master entertainer David Lee Roth, the Frank Sinatra of Big Rock & High Energy Rock'n'Roll, Ed's absolutely unique and sound-shaping drummer-brother Alex Van Halen, and high-pitch chorus singer / driving bass player Michael Anthony. Unheard of until this day!

It was. I gotta go this night in Oakland. If you have no experience in this arena. It was sound proofed, for no reverb, and bouncing audio. None. It was all just like you see it. Watch DLR. not perfectly done, but the screams are on target. Eddie. Just about as clean as the studio. The entire two hours were special too watch. I saw them 6 times after this indoor show. They never were this good. I was at the US Festival in San Bernardino 1983. Eddie was on all night. DLR was just a bit drunk I think.....!
A perfect Van Halen song- it has it all. Light up the Sky is like that, too.
I always loved that goosestep to the front of the stage!
One of Eddie's best solos, and this version is even better than the album, which was already legendary. Next level playing.
Pure genius. The pacing/tempo of the song is so slow so as to show off the beautiful tone Ed created.
It"s like "here is what I can do, can you best this?"...and I think he knew no one could.
One of the greatest bands ever to take the stage. I saw them for the first time in 81 and I was so impressed. Total professional. We were all blessed to have seen EVH play. There was no one else that could make a guitar 🎸 sound like that. He was always smiling. R.I.P
