ATEM Mini: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly - Did BlackMagic Make Capture Cards Obsolete?

  • BlackMagic Design's new ATEM Mini is (by far) the most affordable ATEM on the market, and one of the cheapest way to get FOUR 1080p60 capture sources and two audio sources mixed at once. For just under $300 USD, the ATEM Mini is one of the most accessible video and audio mixers to get a live event up and running. That doesn't mean it's perfect, though - I have some serious complaints. But hey, that's kind of the point - they want you to have a clear upgrade path through the ATEM product family.

    Thanks for the shout-out! I agree with you about the HDMI out on the 4K & 6K. I wish they were UHD instead of 1080p. I still stream with them, but it's definitely a soft 1080p. It's obviously only intended for monitoring and not capture. I love the cameras, but wish they had a better HDMI out.

    So I use an A7S II In Log mode for my face cam, and it's beautiful for green screen work. I can even wear different shades of green (Like a dark military camo) because the output is so clean. As for getting good skintones, I've found that cheaper LED lights have poor CRI ratings (even worse than they actually report when you measure them) and it makes it very difficult to pull out a nice looking skintone. I'm still using Tungsten and Arri CCFLs for lighting even though it get's real hot. A good test to see if it's the camera or your lighting is to go outside on a sunny day and see if you can pull a good skintone from it. If you can, then it's likely your lights.
    Keep in mind the Sony Cameras are not in Rec.709 color space and don't have the same white point, so when you try to grade without shaping it with a LUT you'll find the color skew towards green, which they get knocked on in camera reviews constantly. It's not a fault of the camera, but a fault of sony wanting to maximize the color space at the expense of gradeability on rec.709 displays. They created a .cine profile to get around this which has the same white point and chromacities as rec.709 meaning you can just manually create a lut and colors look mostly right.

    If they had made it 4K60 compatible upstream and given better picture in picture controls, you could theoretically just send your PC a multiview of your 1080p sources and then use them in OBS at full quality, basically combining four 1080p images into one 4K image and then splitting it back over software. That'd increase the cost since it'd have to be TB3 instead of just USB-C, but then it'd actually be viable as a mini quad capture card all on its own which would be incredibly valuable to a lot of people.

Please tell what you do to sweeten that mic. Also, where do I find that pop screen? How do you make your GoPro show up on the ATEM? Now, for my ATEM Mini Pro questions: How do you bring in your computer screen? What I've figured out is to plug the HDMI output of my Apple TV into a port on the ATEM and set my display to 'throw' to the Apple TV. While it works, is there a better way? You have your GoPro showing up, apparently, on one of the ATEM inputs. Despite setting my GoPro to 1080, All I get is black from my GoPro 5. Thank you. @@schnasenbasen I don't understand how that will fix the problem if you're using the USB-C output to the laptop ? Whenever I'm using the ATEM with Skype/Zoom or anything else than OBS, the video is crunched as hell as seen on EposVox's video.

    • @schnasenbasen
      @schnasenbasen 3 роки тому

      @@josh_aidan Sorry, perhaps I expressed myself incorrectly. Our setup was like this: 2-4 Macbooks via HDMI on the ATEM Mini Pro. The ATEM Mini Pro streamed directly to UA-cam. Without the UpDownCross Converter, we had the problem that the input from the Macbooks already had the wrong colour space or video range. Contrasts and colours were shifted unfavourably and could not be corrected with the colour calibration of the Macbook. We therefore connected the converters between the Macbook HDMI Out and the ATEM HDMI In.

    I was the guy asking about the 4-camera/cap-card rig on Twitter yesterday - I'm so happy to see this video today, as I was strongly considering this item. I currently run 3 decklink mini 3g recorders in my PC, and I'm at the point where I need to upgrade to ... something. I was looking at the ATEM Studio rack-mounted solution, but $$$$$. Of course, this item and and the Roland competitor. The only reason I really want to keep my cap-card based solution is because I have a custom stinger transition between each camera angle, and this item doesn't allow for that. I also often use 2 cams in a split-screen setup; which this until doesn't appear to support. Even with those limitations, I'm still very tempted, just because I can use this as a source for up to 4 cams, then still add some capture cards to my rig allowing for up to 7 potential cameras available. Talking out loud ... if I grouped the cameras together for a single table into this item where a stinger wouldn't be necessary between shots ... then I could still keep my table-based transition when swapping between different tables, and be able to show different angles of the table without stingers. Then I could have one of these for each table and multiple angles for the tables, and just one capture card per table/Atem Mini. I'm liking this idea more and more. This is all assuming that I can drop multiple units onto the same LAN without issue for remote control from a single machine.

      HI Johnny101- just curious if you would consider uncompressed Decklink Quad HDMI recorder - 4 inputs independent HDMI to 4K60P plus some computer formats. It works with OBS, Xsplit, Wirecast @$545USD

    • @stljohnny101
      @stljohnny101 4 роки тому

      @@hoapuka I have also considered that item, but haven't fully researched it. If I can use multiple inputs at the same time inside OBS/Wirecast it's a very reasonable option - and I'll get to keep my stingers. :) Although, I am learning more towards the ATEM Mini just for portability - as we are thinking of having a travel-based rig which the Mini will play nicely with a {beefy} laptop on location. But, it sounds like you have good experience with that Quad recorder, which is good to hear. The reviews I find online are spotty at best usually.

    Solid review. You asked all the hard questions. I want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. I also look at price/performance level and what the tool is used for in streaming. Price/performance for the ATEM Mini is excellent for what it is designed to address 1080P is for many small groups max. Having studied 4k and higher resolutions I can tell you most people don't even notice. Facebook for non-gamers is still limited to the 720p. For gamers and those who need higher resolutions, you need more expensive gear at this point. for $295 this is a solid basic streaming solution.

    Probably the number one comment on why this is such an awesome product. If you switch between platforms, (I use a PC for personal use, a Mac for Work, and a Linux box for some experimentation) this box can just go on the KVM and work on any of the three platforms. Imagine what it would be like having to get capture cards for EACH platform, or three separate external devices.

    EposVox, the three real limitations for the Mini's DVE are lack of scaling above 100% for cropped image, rotation of video is disabled, and you cannot simultaneously use DVE and Chroma.
    As for the Pocket 6k and the color issues. I've been testing the Mini for live-to-tape videos with the Pocket 4k and a LUT passed through the hdmi. It is not great for gaming, but using the Mini's hdmi output with a Ninja Inferno gives you a close to final video and higher quality than the usb provides.

    regarding 4k compatibility... it's amazing that the ATEM mini has a really high quality scaler on each input. 4k processing would probably bring the price way up. It was smart for them to do really good scaling and process at HD. honestly, this feature as a really clean switcher (and one of the best chroma keyers in the business) is well worth the whole price. this box is doing what normally costs a whole helluva lot of money in the pro world. one more thing.. you mentioned multiview several times, that's available on the ATEM mini pro.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 роки тому

      The Pro didn't exist at time of review, and IMO it was still silly not to include here.
      I'd agree on the scaler point if it accepted 4k inputs and scaled down. In 2020 the vast vast majority of broadcasters are at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p by not - if not 4k already - so there isn't much work that needs done there. Accepting 4k and scaling down would've made it a must buy

    "Video Lag / Video Latency ISSUE!" (Not audio lag) When using the ATEM Mini Switcher?
    When using the different cameras plugged into the switcher through HDMI its about 1-2 second delay from when I say something until the movement of my lips appears on the screen.
    For reference: I'm using a 2013 Mac book Pro Retina which has the normal USB 3.0 ports, 16GB of Ram 2.7 GHz Quad- Core Intel Core i7.
    When I use my MYPIN, similar to a CAM Link (HDMI to USB converter) it works just fine! I'm thinking it might be because I don't have USBC ports on my computer (I'm using USBC to USB), so maybe its not fast enough? But not sure....
    The problem occurs even when i'm just viewing in OBS and not actually live as well,
    Does anyone else have this problem? And/or Know how to fix it?

    Thanks so much for the super informative video! I’m getting excessive delay (compared to U-TAP) with atem mini pro. Someone mentioned i should match my camera output to that of Atem Mini Pro so the scalers won’t be at work & that will reduce delay. Scalers apparently help convert the resolution for atem mini, as I’m sure you know...
    Do you know what camera output would be ideal to avoid scalers?

    Q: I am concerned about lag between audio and video. Is it noticeable when you run audio through a mixer instead of directly from a HDMI source on the ATEM Mini? Does this work only with the ATEM Min's video channel 1 input?
    In my research, the $900+ Roland ATEM has delay controls for all HDMI inputs.
    I am a retired TV engineer and I want to avoid using crap audio consumer sources (camera microphone inputs) going into my HDMI-outputting camera. I want audio through my good mikes and mixer without lipsync problems.

      If you need reliability, I'd get from a reputable brand - not AliExpress. If you need only one camera I'd recommend the Mars 400s by Hollyland. Relatively low latency, decent range, and nice features. For my setup, I plan to have multiple cameras hardwired and one wireless. For that, I'm going for the Cosmo 600 as it has almost no latency. I've heard that the ATEM Mini will rescale all inputs to whatever you set in the switcher software. I have the ATEM Mini and am outputting 4k/24 from my Sony a6500 with 1080/24 going out from the ATEM. Is there any benefit to doing this when it comes to picture quality? For example, will a 4k output downscaled to 1080 result in a better quality video in this scenario, vs outputting 1080 on the a6500 and the ATEM?

      Ryan Hafey scaling is the selling point of this switcher... as long as you're OK with HD output. All other ATEMs do not scale - their input signals must all match.
      A guess is that this BM Mini switcher was made for the audiovisual presentation world where multiple laptops are common sources. And 4K projection isn't practical or otherwise perceivable.
